god i want this but really have no need for it since i have two working gaming pcs

$740 just for the base unit, you still need to provide the ram and the m2 ssds… and of course kbd mouse lcd etc.

a thunderbolt external gpu box with a decent video card would be pretty damn sweet

    • +1

Wouldn't having an external GPU box kind of defeat the purpose of it being a small form factor PC?

  • from what i read as a stand alone it is not really great for "gaming" and that you really need the external graphics component. I cant really remember what was said about noise ect

but yes it is quite tempting nuc

    • +3

Are you quite really really really sure that you don't really want to buy this NUC?

  • +1

Come on release more new generations so I can buy older i3 gen 4 at $200

  • Thinking of buying a nuc pc Nuc pc and a shield as a media player with kodi.

Will this nuc be enough to serve both purposes. Is there anything that the shield is better in handling ?

    • +1

Own both and find the remote and plex / kodi on the shield was more friendly than a PC. Admittedly its up to you if you want a keyboard/mouse/diy remote solution on the PC. Love the shield (esp with an nvidia card in the gaming pc) for streaming. That and the shield is about half this price when on special.

Its personal preference though and everything you can do on the shield can be emulated in some way on the PC.

If you're wanting a small PC purely to act as a Kodi player, I would recommend using a RPi instead.

  • Thanks. In that case I will wait for a good deal on the Shield. Maybe around Black Friday/Monday sales.

I need a NUC for photo editing (raw files) in lightroom. Would the NUC6i3SYH be enough for that or should I go with the i5. There is the 20% deal on ebay for futu online. i3 + 8gb RAM comes to around 435$.

    Thanks in advance !!

    • I would go with the i5 just to be on the safe side, but can't really comment on the particular needs of photo editing applications.

Just FYI there are a number of people (self included) that have suffered a number of issues with the Skull Canyon NUC.
One of the issues is freezing (crash so hard it can't even display a bluescreen).
This particular issue was worse for those driving larger numbers of pixels in their display for some reason.

Wanted to love this little beast but it didn't work out for me.
Store ended up giving a full refund.

Also be very very gentle with the screws that hold it together, they're made from a very soft metal.
Was almost unable to retrieve my m.2 SSD when i returned it.

    • Thanks for the info. After the infamous Skylake NUC WHEA issue, one would have thought Intel would have done a better job before releasing these Skull Canyon NUCs. Really would like to have one… but after the Skylake NUC issue, and your feedback, I think I will pass on this one. Quite expensive after adding a m2 SSD and RAM. Normal SATA SSD is not an option on these.

    • I must have been lucky with my NUC. I ended up making it a beast and added a 512gb M2 Samsung and a spare 256gb M2 as well as 32mb (16mb x 2) of Ram. No issues so far. Right now in Qualia (Hamilton Island) with it plugged into the tv here so I can play WOW when the wife is asleep. :-)

No issues so far. FYI got it for $839.20 at the first eBay 20% sale which had the NUCs.

  • Wish i had enough reason to upgrade from my alienware alpha R1…

    • Mine lives at a friends house as my gaming PC while I'm there :)

  • yep, heard a lot of issues with the 6th gen nucs.

if anyone is interested in micro sized desktops, I'd highly recommend the dell OptiPlex 7040 micro. these are of similar size to the nucs, and the i5 model can be purchased from dell outlet for around ~$600 (retails for well over $2k). the i5 model are also quad core desktop grade CPUS instead of the intel i5 nucs which are dual core.

    • Not trying to stir anything however, i don't think you could compare the two, the dell doesn't have a decent dedicated graphics card, while this on the other hand does, i mean it won't compare to a 750TI but the dell won't compare to this, you know.

  • Where do you get $851 for local stock? The link takes me to over $1k for these things. Which actually makes more sense as they are list priced from Intel for resellers for close to $900.

  • What can this be used for? Anyone have a link I can read?
