Similar to the Optus deal listed here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/259574

Vodafone are doing 15gb SIM only plans for $50 per month.

Another option they have is 13gb with included International Calls also for $50 a month.

For anyone considering the iPhone 7, it actually works out cheaper to buy the iPhone outright and then go on one of these plans. For example the iPhone 7 Plus 128gb is $1419 outright, adding in $1200 totals $2619 for 15gb data. For a standard Vodafone iPhone 7 Plus 128gb with 16gb totals $2856.

Additionally students can also get 10% off if signing up instore.

  • Time value for money?
10% Student or second service discount?
Ability to upgrade at 21st or 22nd month?
Please consider your own circumstances and holistic picture.. if thinking about buying outright iPhone or any Phone and considering SIM only plans..

    • Yerp.

You can buy an iPhone from Apple with 6 months 0% finance if it helped, although for the just under $10 a month over 2 years I'd just do it through the phone company for convenience and lower out of pocket upfront expense.

  • +1

Exactly the same quota as Optus's $50/mo BYO plan, also has 10% of students. Optus also throws in unmetered streaming for Spotify and a few others.

    • Is this a little better for international if you go with the less data and international calls? Just wondering, my next plan needs good international calling and roaming.

    • Yeah, but Optus reception is mediocre where I live but Vodafone is much better.

It quite commonly is cheaper to buy outright. What you're getting on a plan is a payment plan. A $1400 device would be around $2800 on an interest-free payment plan at radio rentals/elsewhere.

  • About to head off but can anyone let me know if I can just upgrade my current sim only plan (with voda) to this plan? Currently on the old $45 a month 7GB sim only plan.

    • I am on 10gb and unlimited intl calls. Thinking how to upgrade to this one?

  • with OPTUS, u getting 15gb and 500 mins intl call but this voda plan u cant have both mmmhhh…

    • Yeah it seems Voda is going backwards with the value included in their plans (Especially Vodas Month to Month plans). Optus also includes free Spotify streaming etc in their plans.

However with the options listed here you can opt to get 2GB less and more international minutes than what Optus is offering.

I've also had my wife phone plan switched to my name and were pooling our data with Vodafone. Because it was my second sim only contract they gave me 20% off so $90 for 2 plans.

    • nice work, were you out of contract? or on month to month?

  • +2

For roaming overseas you can only use 9GB or 7GB out of the 15GB or 13GB included. More than enough for overseas roaming under the $5 like its home.

    • How do you know it's not the full 15? Doesn't make sense….

      • Looks at the break down for Data and you see the words "6GB/mth total bonus data (4GB + 2GB) for use in Oz". The words (for use in Oz) being the biggest points. So the base Data you can use overseas, the bonus data is only to be used in Australia and is not part of your overseas Roam Like Its Home.

        • Oh ok. I used the additional gb on roaming and was fine. Perhaps i got lucky or things have changed. I did that 4 months ago.

        • @scheps:

Good to know as a data point.

  • +1

How is this 15 gb similar to optus? This one doesn't have 500 international minutes and free music streaming right.

    • +1

No but the 13GB Voda option has potentially more international minutes 300/1000 at the same price. YMMV.

      • Ah thanks Spizz.

  • With Vodaphone data sharing, you also share unlimited calls with the second mobile but Optus you only share data, based on what I see on their website? Is this correct?

    • yes, however international calls are no longer shared. I suspect eventually text and local calls would be phased out as well? unless all plans become unlimited by default.

    • Maybe a student is using this as their internet connection for home as well? You'd go through 15GB a month downloading course materials and doing research for assignments easily.

      • +1

Use the free wifi or Uni PC and copy it to USB.

        • -2

You're right. Students shouldn't have internet access anywhere except uni.

        • -2

          @itsMartin:

nah its just it needs to be 1.5tb or nothing.

      • -5

So get an internet connection at home? If you're a student on this plan, you're really making poor decisions.

        • -1

What if you can't afford multiple connections, because you're a student with a limited income?

I always had an internet connection at home but some people like to save money and consolidate.

        • -2

@itsMartin: Multiple connections? Where are the multiple connections coming in.

1GB on phone, internet at home and free high speed internet at University. Nothing lost, a lot gained.

What the (profanity) are you even talking about? My point is that you're wasting money on this plan, which you definitely are.

        • @StoneSin: Multiple connections: Home and mobile that you just mentioned above. What if you just want one? You can have a mobile connection that doubles as your home internet.

        • -2

@itsMartin: Two connections is cheaper than one in that instance. Or did you not get that point?

        • @StoneSin: No, I never got that point because you never gave some specific examples where it would be cheaper. I'm sure the students would love to see the alternative you've got in mind that could save them money.
My experience dictates that it would be more expensive having two, given the costs associated with a home internet connection will usually bring you pretty close to $50/month on its own, then you add your mobile on.

For example I see Dodo are a cheap ADSL provider and have a plan for $29.90/month (and so do TPG), but then you've got to have a phone line connection on top of that ($25.95/month minimum). You're already over. You'd maybe get in under $50 for home and mobile if you had access to the NBN and went with a $30-$40 plan from someone (like Dodo for $30, although it only gives 10GB or Exetel for $39) and a very cheap mobile plan, but again this could serve their needs better for a similar price. And you'd obviously need to be one of the lucky ones that have access to the NBN.

Edit: Spelling and a couple of details of providers of where I got the numbers from.

        • -2

          @itsMartin: All examples are cheaper.

        • Ah, the "I actually don't have facts to back up my opinion" response. Nice.

        • -1

@itsMartin: No, the facts are pretty obvious. It's the "I don't want to explain 1+1 to a 40 year old".

        • +1

@StoneSin: Are they obvious? As I said, I couldn't find them. What I did find I posted above… And I stopped looking when I couldn't see a way to get the internet under that price let alone a mobile.

I am 100% happy to be shown where you're able to find a home internet service and a mobile phone service that will give the user more than 15GB total data between them for under $50. In fact I'll drop the 15GB requirement and just find me an ADSL/mobile combo under $50.
I've got no issues with admitting that I'm wrong if I'm unaware of something. I always like learning something new, and I've asked you to share with not only me but everyone else here.
I showed you what I found and I simply can't see the pricing you seem to be aware of.

It would have taken you less time to just post the facts you're referring to rather than type all of these posts all afternoon/evening.

Edit: And I'm not 40, so feel free to explain 1+1 to me.

    • University student who needs to use internet while traveling on train/bus? Or Uni students who drives and using in-phone GPS/Car Play/Spotify?

Students who needs a life outside of school/uni/home?

      • -2

Equates to 1-2GB maximum a month.

        • Depends on the quality of life ;)

        • Students nowadays can easily burn 300MB-400MB per day for Facebook/Instagram/Assignments/Skype/Games/other social media. That equates to 9GB-12GB a month.

Your idea of 1GB-2GB per month is only limiting to email, WhatsApp, Line, WeChat, SMS perhaps.

        • -2

          @scheps: Incorrect.

        • -6

          @Schpeltor: No they can't. LOL

You seem to be oblivious. I am just going to assume home computers didn't exist when you went through university.

        • @StoneSin: I assume that some kind of fairy would be paying for this home internet in your argument? Because if a student didn't have internet at home this would be the perfect deal for them.

        • -1

          @BeauKilla: You would be wrong.

        • @StoneSin: I would be wrong if what?

  • Ovo 24$ plan plus 50gb plan on a dual phone would be hard to beat if ur looking for crazy data.

  • I heard that 10% student discount is not available for simo.

  • So could we put this on a share plan between 2 numbers? I have a number for me and a number for my wife. Could we split the data and total calls between 2 numbers?
    Thanks guys!
    Cheers OP

    • That's exactly what I've done, the only clause is that both plans go in to one persons name (they have a permission form to bring a number over to someone else's name that they need to sign). My wife came from Optus and we're both now on the $50 plan, 20% off on the second plan and the data is combined and when we check our usage we both share data national calls are unlimited and I don't make international calls so haven't tested that.

      • Yeah this is what i do at the moment but I'm wondering if rather than have the two $50 plans, whether i could get a single one of these plans and split it between 2 numbers. Probably not but would be great.

        • Can't see why any phone company would do that, everyone would buy one contract per family if you could.

        • @rekabkram:

Yeah I think you must be on a month to month 'plan' to share usage.
Would be great if we could share the $50 with a $2 sim lol.

  • Vodafone sucks since 2 years ago, 4g is slow now and 3G reminds me dial up period. Price is no less than Optus but the latter has free EPL. The only advantage of Vodafone is the $5 international roaming. But if u don't travel oversea a lot or buy local SIM card,u should leave Vodafone. Vodafone is losing its Australia market

    • +1

This is what I EXACTLY think.

I think they are giving TOO much data that is impossible under standard usage and their 4G is no much better than my home ADSL (of course it's for Downlink).

They are removing unlimited international calling and they insist charging streaming cost to all major service provider.

In Australia there is no single ISP is 'military grade', compared to some countries but in my opinion Vodafail should have given us a better deal!

    • +4

Vodafone was shit, but as someone who's been with them for 10 years, I can say they are WAY better now.
4G speeds are fantastic for me. Anyway, if you haven't been with them in the last 2 years how would you know if they are still shit?

      • I just moved to optus less than 3 months ago after 6 years with Vodafone. Vodafone 4g is slower than used to be and if there's no 4G covered, it means dead coz vodafone 3g australia is the worst in the world.
I am not saying optus 4g is better than vodafone, but not worse vice versa. But 3G is 100 times better than vodafone and you got free EPL.
Hence I said same price goes for optus is the wise choice.

    • It really depends on where you live, for my area Optus is even worse than voda

      • I am living in Sydney, 10km to the CBD. ALso I am working in the CBD

  • Voda used to have $50 plans that gave unlimited international minutes to their 10 countries.
Now Optus stopped theirs and Voda has followed suit. My uncle took it out on $45 pm for 12 months. Now looks like its gone! :)

    • My wife is currently on that plan, sim only $50 ($45 for student discount).
Got that plan March this year, it is not too bad since she calls overseas a lot, and with 6GB data

This might be good if you need more data, I was just wondering if I join my wife account will I get a discount for 2nd service? And also how does sharing call works?

      • Might wanna ask VF.
I was in the optus store today and saw prepaid, month to month, $40, 6GB and unlimited calls to 10 countries. That is good value!

        • Really? But unlimited international call is only valid till October. Not life of plan?

        • @lufee: that's correct. Went in store and checked today. What a colossal waste of time. I think Vodafone and optus did this on purpose. Back to amaysim now.

  • Just for consideration (I was looking at this plan but am now in 2 frames of mind.Vodafone has also introduced the equivalent of the New Phone Feel from 2/9/16 for 24 month contracts (like other service providers). Summary here:

    New Phone Every Year

Vodafone’s New Phone Every Year is automatically available to new and existing customers who've signed up to a new 24 month plan with a handset from 2nd September 2016. Here’s how to take up the offer:
1.Once you’ve completed 12 months of your plan, visit your nearest Vodafone store
2.Return your phone in Good Working Order and re-sign on a new 24 month plan of equal or greater value
3.A once-off fee of $149 will apply to your next bill

    Further details:
    http://vodafone.intelliresponse.com/index.jsp?requestType=No…

So really when it is stated that it is cheaper to buy phone upright and then get the 12 month plan it does not include the value of this option to upgrade after 12 months (i.e. not entirely like for like).

    • Such. A. Rip. Off. Not a bargain at all!
