At this point probably not worth it. I'm a former owner of multiple Lumias and loved them, but Microsoft are almost giving up on phones and developers are leaving like the dickens.

Windows 10 mobile just never had the functional polish that 8.1 had.

    Such a shame.

For me the breaking point was when youtube was removed in like 2013

      • +4

That was Google's fault for not approving the app that Microsoft wrote out of spite. Plenty of good third party apps for YouTube, even the website is good enough these days.

        • I have no troubles using the normal website. Youtube Red sub works fine too.

        • It wasn't Google's fault when M$ started the whole game first. M$ has been suing Google and Android OEM such as HTC for years and have been paid a hefty sum of money.

        • I agree, prefer the wp third party apps over the YouTube app on Android… Particularly mytube.

It's gets old when Google change something in the code and the third party apps don't work until the dev updates the app.

      • I have "explorer for you tube" app on my 950 xl. Love the live tile function.

Windows 8.1 had a more simplistic UI which is excellent for those that don't need all functions that come with a modern phone OS.

Such a shame that tiff between Google and MS hindered the app market.

I love still my 950XL. Don't need the 'social' apps and games that are on iOS and Android, so it works out well for me.

      • Has all of the social apps and many games! My L950 runs the apps like a charm!

    • yup have to agree with you there… id been using lumia's from v7 .. and the MS smartphones (O2 etc) since before smartphones existed hehehe there's no real point in wasting money on these since MS has given up on them.

    • developers are leaving like the dickens.

Most developers that are pulling their apps are only doing so because they are releasing a UWP/Win10 app though. They're just not getting any of the absent big developers to come across, which is the problem.

      • I'm not sure I agree with this.

Certainly this is the case for some apps….

Unfortunately by more or less killing windows phone Microsoft have also killed a major incentive for developers to make a UWP app.

I just have a feeling Microsoft have inadvertantly shot themselves in the foot.

    • I love my Lumia 950. Moved from iphone. There is plenty of support from MS, just is not the same as Androiod and IOS. Not a bad thing.

'Optus Outdated Combo' this should have been the name of this deal. An outdated phone (which you still pay $10-15 a month on the top of $40 plan) + outdated plan ($20 plan gives you better deal than this $40 plan…talking about Coles $20 plan which uses optus network), Optus gives only 1GB data on this $40 plan, most people would run out of 1GB & will end up paying more. The only plus is Xbox that comes with it. I don't play games so don't know if this Xbox is outdated or not.

This is an outdated comment. Lumia 950/950XL is still Microsoft current flagship model. You expect they just give it to you for free? Sure!

  • Lumia smartphones are coming to an end, Microsoft hints

It is well worth nothing that Lumia is hardware, Windows Phone 10 is software. Ending a hardware line does not mean in the slightest that Microsoft is throwing in the towel for the operating system.

The article linked does end up going on about the "Surface Phone". I'm not sure what was intended by posting that link.

Just an information for anyone considering buying a Lumia phone that "Lumia smartphones are coming to an end"
I would like to know something like that in this situation

its the software thats the problem ! only way windows phone is going to survive is if they make android apps run on them

        • Even then it probably wouldn't work….. See blackberry.

I think their only hope is business.

The new HP phone actually looks pretty great.

  • Just noticed that it is not free on the $40 plan. If you deselect the xbox option the handset repayments become $8, so the xbox costs $2/month for 24 months. All the other plans seem to be free. Just a minor detail :)

  • All 6 people with windows phones are still under contract though.

  • The phone is ok for those that don't use many apps. Reasonable hardware, great camera comparable to the best flagships, good support in terms of os updates and continuum could be useful for some. I personally find it hard to recommend flagship level windows phone, because for the people who use very few apps can get by with the sub $100 lumia phone. Especially when something like the Lumia 640 offers such good hardware for such little price.

  • I am a Windows phone tragic and would consider this if it was with the Xbox One S. I wonder how much original Xbox One stock Optus have? Or does MS just supply the hardware to Optus on signup?

what's more useless at this point? windows phone or old xbox one?

Microsoft will launch a new range of phone under their own branding. Just like how the nexus has been killed off by Google.

Don't buy this people….. Its a two horse race now, iOS or android….. Windows phone market share is below 1% WORLDWIDE…..

    http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/23/11743594/microsoft-windows…

    • +2

what market share has anything to do with people buying a phone they like at a price they can afford?

      • Everything if you need apps that developers don't bother porting to windows or they throw out hobbled versions. I tried a windows phone and loved it but had no choice but to dump it due to the app problem.

        • App market is windows weakness but lets not discount its strength too, Lumia 950 is Microsoft flagship, great solid phone with great camera. Their OS is superior than Android IMO and Cortana is by far the best voice assistant compare to Siri and Google.
But that's just my experience. I've owned 3 windows phone (820, 640xl, 1020). Currently using a budget Motorola because I couldn't afford the 950XL when it came out.
For the camera itself, its already worth it. Good luck if you're looking for a cheap android phone with good camera.

      • If price is an issue, there are LOTS of decent android phones out there. This is a $50/month phone plan.

No market share, means no app support. All apps are pretty average at best on WP compared to iOS/android.
