AmEx Statement Credit: Spend $20 on Android Pay, Get $10 Credit (AmEx Issued Cards)

2970

They did it for Apple Pay, they did it for Samsung Pay, now it's Android Pay's turn! Just found it in my AMEX app. If you can't find it/don't want to install the app, the link I've provided has an enrol button.

If you are getting this message:
"Unfortunately this campaign is by invitation only. Please visit http://www.amexconnect.com.au for other fabulous offers"
Then you are attempting to add a bank-issued AMEX and thus cannot take advantage of this deal (thanks to various commenters below but Turd in particular for his detailed reasoning) for noting this. It has to be an AMEX-issued card.

Also if your Android phone is rooted, you can't use Android Pay. Might be able to get around it if you search for solutions?

Copied and pasted:

  • Save the offer to your eligible Card and tap to pay with Android Pay spending $20 or more on that Card, in one or more transactions, in store by 20/10/16 to receive one $10 credit. Limited to the first 10,000 Cards to save the offer.
  • Only American Express issued Cards are eligible for this offer.
  • You must have a compatible Android Device and your Card must be enrolled in Android Pay. More information about Android Pay, including how to add your Card, is available here.
  • Offer is limited to one credit per registered Card. Only spend on the Card you register counts towards the Offer.
  • Card Members can spend using Android Pay in store at any merchant in Australia that accepts American Express contactless payments. Examples of stores which accept contactless transactions from American Express are available here.
  • Excludes online purchases. Offer valid at Australian locations only.
  • Credit is not redeemable for cash or other payment forms.
  • Credit should appear on your billing statement within 5 business days from qualifying spend but may take up to 90 days from offer end date.
  • Credit will not be applied to your Account if it has been suspended or cancelled.
  • Credit may be reversed if your qualifying purchase is refunded or cancelled

      1. It's valid from now until October 20.
      2. Yes
  • What's a cheap Android phone that I can use for this?

  • Sorry to ask, can i use it on any paypass device or it need a Android pay sticker to use?

    • android pay sticker, coles, myer, 7/11, all have it

      • No such thing

        • i mean android logo

        • @Turd: A logo. They meant the stickers where you just stick a NFC chip on the back of your phone like with Commbank

        • @kerfuffle: ahhh right….. it's just the NFC logo/sticker. My Sony Z had one

        • +2

@kerfuffle: I don't think that's what they meant. I think they meant does the payment terminal need to have an android pay sticker/logo for it to work.
Answer: no it works on most terminals that accept tap and pay for Amex.

        • @NigelTufnel:

          Thank you for your answer

    • You need an Android phone with minimum 4.4 installed and a NFC chip, the Android Pay app and an AMEX-issued card to take advantage of this offer.

Didn't Apple Pay and Samsung Pay get spend 3x? How come Android Pay only gets spend 1x? :-(

    • Yea that was technically a better offer ratio wise (spend $5+ x3 get $15) but this is I guess more straightforward?

Here's a link for eligible cards if you're curious:
    https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/android-pay/eligi…

  • whats the maximum number of cards you can add to the app? anyone else experience getting a different card number and name when scanning their cards and told to call amex to add? its a bit of a worry in security. i think ill be deleting cards as soon as i get cash back

    • This is to protect fraud

  • +2

Nice one OP. Shop small, Samsung Pay credit and now Android Pay credit - got to love Amex!

    • Yeah I've only had amex for a few months but they've given me like $80 worth of credit on everyday stuff.
      So good.

      • I am in the same boat , i only had amex for three months i got around 90$ credit for general stuff i buy, i have now applied a supliment card for my partner hopefully double the credits from now

  • Cool! Android Pay actually adds functionality to my Amex as I can't tap it at most locations (have to insert it and use my PIN)

    • Then you still won't be able to tap it.
I'm finding more and more places are upgrading their machines for NFC though.

      • Or maybe they meant that the chip that allows them to use ExpressPay is broken?

        • Nah I meant that the chip on the Amex cards seems to be different to the chips on the mastercards and visas and so I need to swipe or insert the Amex most of the time

        • @woodpipe: Then like McFly said, either it's the terminal or your card hasn't been upgraded to tap and go yet

        • @kerfuffle: it's usually the terminal they have to have american tap and pay as well. Thats why mastercard paypass terminals for example won't accept it even if they do accept amex as a company/business

    • it's annoying as hell but so often you tap and go visa it's fine, or mastercard, but amex then gets you to insert it into the chip reader, and most of time doesn't work, but you have to go through the motions before it asks you for the old swipe the magnetic label… :S

"Offer is limited to one credit per registered Card"

So can only get $10 max per card?

    • +2

Well… that's what it says.. right..?

  • Did anyone get a confirmation email from Amex after enrolment?
When I follow the enrol link in Chrome, it warns of a privacy error (connection not private).

  • $2 pre-charge appeared, and the offer appeared in the offers section.
Still no email confirmation though (unlike other offers where we get email confirmation).

  • Does HTC M8 and LG G2 support Android Pay?

    • Why don't you try and install the app and see for yourself …

      • -1

I will borough one of the phone that works. I use iPhone.

        • +1

It's borrow. Also a bit of an effort to save $10 …

As I said in the previous page:

"You need an Android phone with minimum 4.4 installed and a NFC chip, the Android Pay app and an AMEX-issued card to take advantage of this offer."

  • +1

Thanks OP! Part of the reason I bit the bullet on amex was so I can use android pay!

    • I was so excited when it went live two months ago! I was all YAAAASSSS DON'T HAVE TO CARRY MY AMEX AROUND AT WORK ANY MORE (I work at DJs)

      • +1

that's pretty great haha! I went to america and had android pay there! a few weeks later it had launched back here. What a shame in america tap & pay is still pretty much nonexistent.

  • I want to use at muji, has anyone tried it there?

  • +1

Just used Android pay at Coles. was super easy! No need to carry wallet!

    Just need electronic flybys.

Haven't got email about cash back yet but will check in a few days

    • I got the email to confirm that will get cashback

    • You can add your FlyBuys in Android Pay

      • +1

        Really?? WOWOWOWOW!

        • Yeah. I've added my Flybuys, my dad's Woolies card, Myer One, IKEA, Priceline, Dymocks, etc.

        • @kerfuffle: It doesnt scan my cards!! Cant enter it manually. sigh Sony Z here

        • @Turd: Probably time to get a new phone …

        • @kerfuffle: No. Why? I dont understand how people can afford or want to upgrade.

        • @Turd: Slow phone, battery dies at 29% instead of 0%, broke phone, etc.

        • @kerfuffle: Nope, fine with mine! LOL

        • @Turd: Except your cards don't scan? Camera problems, perhaps? :P

        • @Turd:

          Nope, fine with mine! LOL

Then I guess that means there's nothing wrong with your phone and the problem lies with you :o
So even if you get a new phone, you'll still get the same problem. Solution is to get a new turd…or become a new turd?

        • +1

          @Turd:

@Turd and @kerfuffle - i've just used 'stocard'. it stores my RAC (coles fuel discount uses it) card, library card, anything where you can enter the barcodes number. I think flybuys and woolworths are built in too. guess android pay is similar, but yeahhh i use stocard for now.

        • @SaberX: ooo thanks will try that

  • Used mine at Beautiful Pages tonight (great art and design shop in Darlinghurst) and got the qualifying e-mail

  • Slightly off topic: Do AMEX purchases via Android pay also count in Shop Small promotions? It could be a sneaky way to avoid the surcharges associated with AMEX.

    • +6

I have found that using the phone at united service staions, JB Hi Fi and others lets you avoid the surcharges that come with amex. From what I can work out it has to be added manually so by the time you paywave you are done! I do it all the time. As a result you get the shop small benefits plus the generous points structure.

  • So assuming I have three cards and I purchased a gift card at Coles for $60 on the self service checkout with split transactions im guessing I get half back?

    • Yep sounds right..! Keep in mind you need 3 registered cards for that.

  • +1

Hey nice first post OP! Don't think anyone else has said this yet! Maybe no one has noticed.. lol

  • If you added 3 registered AMEX cards to Android pay app, when you pay, I assume that if you don't manually selected a different card as default, the payment would automatically come out of the original/first default card?

    • +1

True, you need to swap them manually as one will always be your default. That said its as easy as opening the app and clicking on the you you need.

  • Anyone manage to get it to work at Maccas? It's supposedly supported but failed for me tonight, 2 different phones with 2 different cards.

    • +1

I didn't think AMEX with Android Pay worked at Maccas

      • It should work. Maccas is on the list.

        Amex standard works at maccas.

        Gonna try it tomorw night

        • says "coming soon" on the list of supported retailers.

        • @oswade: oh yeah damm, well Oporto have it, I saw the Android pay logo on the machines

    • edit

  • +1

once you have done the Android pay can you delete the card from the app and still qualify for the cash back? or do you need to leave the card on the app until the credit hits your account?

    • How would Amex know if you've deleted the app? Go right ahead, I say.

  • +6

Tried Android Pay for the first time today. Yay! :-)

Puzzled why it did not work at first. As it turned out, in addition to turning on the NFC, there is also the "Tap and Pay" setting within, which has to be set to "Android Pay". Unbeknownst to me, it was set to the Commonwealth Bank. Probably a setting added when I installed the Commonwealth Bank app way before. This cause Android Pay not to work, until it was changed back. In case someone has the same issue.

  • +1

Amex is just getting better and better.
    Thanks for sharing,OP.

  • +1

Does Android pay work if you have a case around your phone?

    • +2

Yes. Unless your case is RFID-protected …

  • Having issues using it on my other two amex cards. Got all 3 set up with amex pay and all 3 enrolled with the offer. My first card worked fine and my other two refuse to work with pay wave and comes up with some error saying unavailable at this time.

  • Failed to work at coles, says insert

    • Never had a problem using it at Coles. Unlike Woolies

    • My second card worked today at Coles. Maybe takes a while to register.

    • +1

Do you have a opal card stick at the back of your phone?

    • When this happens, most likely you can cancel, and try again. A similar thing happened to me in Woolworths (device printed the prompt to insert card). So I cancelled, tried again, and it succeeded.

  • +1

Got my cash back from amex for using android pay at coles!

    • So did I. Except it was for a different store :S

  • Does it need to be connected to the internet when paying?
