IHG Points Purchase 100% Bonus - Hotel Booking for Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn (Max 60k Points + 60k Bonus)

140

Similar to the previous deal last month where the 80% bonus was available, this time with 100% bonus (maximum offed by IHG):

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262628

Maximum purchase is 60k points + 60k bonus for $690 USD.

As pointed out in the previous post, best use is for lower category hotels (Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza), and watch for quarterly point breaks when rooms go for 5000 points - e.g. last round in August included InterContinental Phnom Penh and InterContinental Mendoza. Points expire in 12 months, but normally easy to extend by doing a survey or buying a cheap item.

New to this IHG world but interesting indeed - I've read the previous posts and had a tinker of the map linked to previously and the IHG site… looks very good for some stays.

Looking at Abu Dhabi for example am I reading this right, the hotel/apartment is showing as ~US$1300/night or 25000 points (US$143.75 if I buy 60k using this promo)?

STAYBRIDGE SUITES ABU DHABI - YAS ISLAND - date Feb 27 - Feb 28 as an example.

Points/night do not appear to vary at the same hotel is that right? Can all "points" rooms sell out or if there is availability of the room type they will allow a points booking?

    • Yeap that's what it's showing me as well so seems correct.

    • Points per night doesn't change unless the category of the hotel changes (they review this once a year, normally at the beginning of the calendar year). Availability of point rooms can vary as properties only assign a certain portion of rooms as "award nights".

A bit surprised how expensive these rooms/apartments are, looks like a good use for the points!

  • this is hard to work out. any tips on stays in nyc, nj or washington dc first week of dec? can't find any. they are all only slightly less than published rates so can probably get a better deal at booking websites.

    • It really depends on which kind of proeprty (how much you want to pay), location and the duration of the stay. For example Even Hotel Time Square South:

      https://www.ihg.com/evenhotels/hotels/us/en/new-york/nyctt/h…

I tried Dec 5 to Dec 6, room rate is $452 USD incl. taxes per night. If you used points, this hotel costs you 40,000 points or $230 USD per night so makes this a good deal. Just be wary it may not be available on all dates (weekends are normally harder to get).

For Washington the Intercontinental is $316 USD by points, which is cheaper than the hotel rate of $461 USD.

Looks like the sweet spot for these US major city centres may be the slightly more up market hotels.

      • wow thanks for the detailed reply. Our budget is about $200 to $250 and you don't save much with the Holiday Inns. Will consider increasing budget but I really want to stay in East Villages will probably do Air BnB. Live in tiny 5 storey wall up like areal New Yorker. I used to live in East Village.

Th week we are there is apparently the busiest an dost expensive time of the year. Hotels are usually not that expensive.

  • I think in many instances it would still be cheaper paying cash rather than points, even with 100% bonus. I tried Intercontinental Bali.

Agreed, especially for popular properties like IC Bali where cash price is actually quite low, points definitely don't make sense.

But still useful for a couple of examples from the last thread and some listed here, and good with the points break rooms that will be released in Oct.

  • Interesting. Just wanted to reconfirm where you saw the 12 month expiry on these purchased points? IHG reward points earned dont generally expire and I havent seen anything specific in the T&Cs which make these purchased points different (i.e. to expire in only 12 months)?

      From:

      https://www.ihg.com/hotels/us/en/customer-care/faq

Do IHG® Rewards Club Points expire?
To reward our guests who choose to stay with us more often, we focus more programme benefits toward members who earn and redeem on a regular basis. All points will expire after 12 months if there's no account activity. But it's easy to maintain your points balance. Just earn or redeem once a year through any of our IHG hotels or partners.

You just need account activity. You can do Opinion Check-in surveys earning a few points just to keep the account active.

        • Thanks for confirming and letting me know about opinion checkin's - I hadn't realised!

  • Make sure to add your birthday to your profile to get 1000 points for free!
