GVA 42" FHD LED LCD TV $238.40 (Was $399) @ The Good Guys eBay (Click 'n Collect)

CGOOD20

A number of TVs from '20% off The Good Guys eBay' deal have been posted on OzBargain in last few days, but this gem was missing (such a big miss for budget buyers like me). $238.40 is a great price for any brand new 40"+ TV with one year warranty in my opinion. Any positive or negative reviews are welcome but irrespective of it, I believe that the TV must be well worth this price at the least, if not more.

Features highlights: PVR Recording via USB. 3 x HDMI & 1 USB Inputs. 1920 x 1080 Full High Definition.

And, to my surprise, the screen 1" bigger drastically becomes $100 dearer, not sure why. Check 43" model. It makes this deal even more lucrative and convincing.

Don't forget to claim Cash rewards on eBay purchase

If you have any valid $25 voucher from this deal, use it to buy an extended replacement warranty for 3 years costing $68 (i.e. $43 after using voucher), when you go for pick up. Please note that the warranty comes with $180 of TGG vouchers ($20 every 4 months to be used within 4 days with no min purchase limit). It's worth it even if you end up using only some of these vouchers! - Unfortunately I got this info only when I went for pick up, so I couldn't add it here earlier. However, I have tried to update everyone in reply whoever has mentioned comments that they ordered the TV. I hope it helps some! I apologize if this reply/message to several people appears like a spam. I assure it's not - it's mere an effort to pass on this useful info to mates before deal ends or pick up happens. :)

Also, credit to Elijah who posted it here along with other TGG deals but looks like it went unnoticed.

  • Hi guys.. This is my first tv at the new place. Can someone suggest as to where to buy a cheap TV cable from which connects tv to round shaped socket in the wall? Sorry, I don't know the exact technical term used for it, probably antenna cable?

    • +1

They are usually called tv coax cable or tv antenna cable. You need to check your connections at either end whether they are male or female & order the opposite. Here is a link to Selby, they deliver in a 2-3 days.
Ignore the F-type, I'm pretty sure that's not what you need. Maybe have a look on eBay as well.

    • +2

Cheapest would be Reject Shop et al., closely followed by Kmart & Daiso IME…they're all pretty much the same, so price is the best metric. :)

      • Thanks. Ended up buying from Jaycar. MSY didn't have it. Pretty reasonable price. Approx. $8 for a 3m cable.

Went to Chirnside Park VIC store to have a look. The picture quality is a bit of the warm side, similar to a Pana on display, but much warmer than Sumsang and Sony. The good guy was trying to sell me a $52 additional warranty. So for 3 years, it is a replacement warranty. For the 3 years, we will receive $20 voucher 3 times. So, if we do not calculate opportunity cost, financial costs, and all of all the other bits and pieces, basically to keep it simple, I can have the TV at $238 (take away a few dollars for cash rewards), add $52, then take away $180 ($2033), then I actually have the TV at about $110.

Wife mentioned that the $20 stuff they sell in TGG is probably over priced anyways, but even that, it sounds pretty good.

Should I take the $52 additional warranty then?

    • +1

No, it was originally $399 according to the title, so under Aus consumer law it would be expected to last 3 years so you are already covered.
      Extended warranties or care packages.

      • errr, additional unrelated info, it will be used by my father in law, he watches like 10hours a day average. So the Australia consumer law covers it?

      • So the additional warranty in Australia is a scam then? :) thanks for letting me know. Then it becomes $52 secures a $2033 voucher. Lol

      • I often wonder about this RRP argument. I'm all for it, but say the tv was discounted to $100 from $399, I think there need to be a consideration to the sold price vs the RRP when it comes to reasonableness of longevity.

      • Well, the price currently mentioned on their website is $298 though. What's the cap for this law?

      • No, it was originally $399 according to the title, so under Aus consumer law it would be expected to last 3 years so you are already covered.

        TOTALLY WRONG

Show us a proper link about this alleged "3 year warranty" (that doesn't exist)

    • Didn't understand the calculation of $180. Can you pls clarify?

      • +1

For the 3 years additional warranty period, TGG sends a $20 voucher via SMS 3 times a year, so it is $20 voucher * 3 times a year * 3 years, it becomes $180.

        • Do vouchers have limited validity?

        • +1

@virhlpool: No min spend, but valid for 4 days only.

        • +1

Why do they send you a voucher for warranty? Isn't that basically paying you to take a product so they can meet their KPI's?

        • +1

@serpserpserp: I found that interesting too. It is part of their so called gold service extras (concierge service and support). They give me a flyer in store. Here is the link https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/concierge/gold-service-extras, it says "$20 store credit sent to you three times each year via SMS"

        • @jingsu6688: oops!

        • @jingsu6688: sorry. Posted something that was already mentioned

    • To me, they charged $68. How come it was $52 for you for the same product? :)

  • So my thoughts after a few hours of viewing are that the sound is very poor. I'm noticing some slight bleeding around all the edges too, anyone else notice this?

Has anyone tweaked the picture settings? If so do you mind sharing.
    Cheers

    • Using external speakers might help.

    • +1

Aspect Ratio -> Just scan will fix bleeding around the edges issue.

  • Picked up the TV and bought an extended replacement warranty (3 yrs) using $25 voucher. Ended up paying $43 for warranty after voucher but got peace of mind for 3 yrs.

    • You can have peace of mind for 3 years without paying for it because we are already covered under Australian consumer law.

    • Where did you get the voucher?

      • +1

You subscribe for TGG newsletter and receive two vouchers, each of $25, at some time interval. You can use it for any purchase above $50. Warranty amount is $68 for this TV so I used one. Not sure if voucher offer is still on but I subscribed it a month back I guess.

        • +1

thanks for the info mate. Will give it a go.

        • @jingsu6688: You won't get the voucher right away though even if the offer is on. It takes a few days. You don't be able to use it for this purchase.

        • @jingsu6688: Please refer to this link for more details. 28Degrees mentioned above that you are covered for 3 years even if you don't buy a warranty though. If that's the case, you don't need to buy it.

  • +1

You do not necessarily have to get the extended warranty when buying the product.you can purchase extended warranty within 7 days of buying your product.

    • That's good. Then many people here can buy it even now even if they had already picked up their TV in last 2-3 days.

      • Why do you keep trying to promote the extended warranty, are you a rep?
Extended warranties are for people who don't know Australian consumer law.

        • Because I think it makes sense. :)

        • @virhlpool: But you think it makes sense because you haven't looked into the Australian consumer law which already covers you.

  • dumb question…is this classified as a "Smart TV"?

    • +1

      It's dumb

  • How does this TV go with USB playback, movies etc?

    • +2

Got this tv yesterday. Very light with thin bezel. Looks good. Had a decent picture quality but audio is very so so ..you want to pair with sound bar or speakers ..the USB function works very well as it plays mp4 mkv avi etc directly ..the remote..hmmm looks flimsy and imagine may not last too long so consider a harmony for when breaks..For 238 bucks this is a great buy overall guys!

  • +2

I had already posted it here… oh well

  • Is this ok to transport overseas on a plane?
I am planning to buy it for my brother. He is leaving next Thursday for VN

    • +1

Is this ok to transport overseas on a plane?

OK = what do you mean?

It will cost you heaps in excess baggage charges and will probably get damaged by uncaring baggage handlers.

He is leaving next Thursday for VN

Crazy… TVs are cheaper in Vietnam than they are here.

  • Ended up buying one because getting a 42" Full HD TV for under $240 is definitely a bargain and it will be a vast improvement on the current tube TV. Hopefully it will last for a few years. Thanks for posting.

    • +1

Cheers! You can go for warranty (3 yrs) if you think it's worth it. I bought it.

  • Picked up today. The picture is good. but the sound is so bad. Is it possible to return?

    • +2

got what you paid for. be happy.

    • I picked and set up the TV yesterday. Set up was very easy. Start up takes a few seconds. Going through the menu is fine once you get used to it. I am actually OK with the sound but the picture shows some colour saturation in general and "ghosting" in dark scenes. Watching Jacobs Ladder in SBS2 last night was very hard as at times it was difficult to even make up actors' faces but it could have been the film quality. Bu it seems the "ghosting" is in general an issue with programs having darker scenes whether they are films or TV series.
Viewing from an angle greater than 60 degrees becomes problematic as the picture becomes very washed out.
Picture quality of other programs (news, documentaries, programs with bright scenes, horse racing) was good overall though but I had to use User Defined Settings for Picture Mode and selected Mild in Picture Colour to balance picture quality.
Overall, the TV is good for the amount of money it cost and for the intended use as a back up TV.

    • Of course. Another solution - you can also buy external speakers when you get a chance.

  • +1

    Thanks again to the OP

    Another " didn't know I needed one but…."

This is working as an excellent monitor.

It's connected to an abandoned 27" iMac running Windows 7 which (surprise!!) lost it's display a while back.

  • +1

I wish I purchased two of them, very happy

  • This tv (at this price) deserved these upvotes and popularity long back. Cheers.

I would love to hear more reviews about this TV
