OK OzBargain. Let's Talk Toilet Paper.

Whenever I purchase toilet paper, I feel that there must be a brand or product that everyone else knows about, but me. I often find that the toilet paper I buy (e.g. Quilton) doesn't seem to measure up to expectations (which leaves me feeling pretty browned off, I don't mind saying).

So, what brand do you buy, OzBargain?

I recommend the Neo 120 (the model I've purchased) https://www.amazon.com/Bidet-Neo-120-Non-Electric-Mechanical… or if you want something a little nicer, the Neo 185.

I've only ever heard good things about this brand, and the savings on TP mean it will pay for itself within a year!

        • Thanks! uncanny the 120 was the one I was checking out too.

        • +1

Thanks, ordered the 120 too. Came to just under $72 total shipped.

        • Interested to know if you got yours yet and was it easy to install or did you have to get converters for the pipe connections? I held off to see if it would drop in price and it is currently $33.28US on Amazon so pulled the trigger.

        • @doublezero1: Mine arrived quite quickly, but haven't installed it yet. Looks like a quality product though - just hoping the attachments fit

        • @railspider: Yeah Amazon said 2 weeks for mine so I've also got my fingers crossed that the attachments fit.

  • +3

    Bidet spray gun.

    • That is the best way, but still you will need paper to wipe or dry.
Also these guns cannot be used in new houses where they dont have a water connection nearby as most of flush water is rain water.

    Who gives a crap.

I hate how TP isn't all double length by default. Get as much TP onto a roll as possible I say.

Not cheap, questionable carbon footprint (made in China I believe), but fairly good on the bum and comes in fully recyclable paper wrapping in a box. I guess bidet would make more sense from an environment perspective.

    • +5

      Double-ply yes, Double-length no.

I bought some of those double-length ones… and the rolls were so thick, they didn't fit into the Roll Holder.
Had to reach over every time like a peasant :(

      • We've got an open style roller holder so all good

    • +4

toilet paper used to be standard 300 sheets per roll, slowly it went down to now the standard 140-180 sheets.
it even varies per pack, you might find 180 per roll in a 4 pack but the 10 pack might be 160 per roll.

      • +2

And standard was 125mm (5inch) width
        Now it is 90-110mm

      • +1

It's kind of like how Cadbury's used to have 250g blocks… I guess they think we will shit less as we're consuming smaller blocks of chocolate?

      • +1

And of course you know why…..they count on people not noticing 20 sheets less. Same price but smaller size and quantity. So they can say "hand on heart"….. "still good value for money - look we haven't put the price up for 10 years". This is the same for cans - less food content, more fluid making up the weight and smaller size can from say 8-10 years ago. Consumers aren't that stupid though are they?

        • exactly.

unfortunately I really think a lot of consumers are stupid/dont careand thats why companies get away with it.

    • +3

      @bargdebarg

      Who gives a crap.

That's a brand of toilet paper. Give it a try!
      https://au.whogivesacrap.org/

    • You need the kirkland one pal, the rolls are massive.

    • +1 whoGivesACrap.org

Actually very good TP, I hate recycled TP but this is the best recycled I've ever used. Plus you get the warm fuzzies, for whatever that's worth. And you don't have to cart the crap back from the store which is a huge bonus.

      • Neat wrapping paper and giant box with the word crap everywhere too

  • Once you wash, you'll never go back to skiddies.

    I mean, it's 2016 ffs, don't people wash their junk? Disgusting crap…

  • +5

    Water is the best

  • +8

Don't bother with toilet paper…use wet tissues.

Test: wipe 20 times with toilet paper, then once with a wet tissue. You'd be surprised how much brown you'll find on that wet tissue…

    • +2

      I agree.

    • +5

      But…. my…. poor hand…

      • -1

Think of the poor wet tissue…

    • -2

      Not to mention disgusted…

      • +1

        Grow up!

    • -2

      Way Too descriptive.

  • -4

Go to nearest public toilet and take all the toilet paper. Free.

  • +5

    Try who gives a crap.

    https://au.whogivesacrap.org/

    • What's it like? Thinking of giving it a go.

      • +1

We use this at home and I'm very satisfied with the quality. It's not super triple ply stuff, but personally I don't like anything that's too "luxe". Best way I can think to describe them is halfway between the cheap home brand stuff and the expensive luxe stuff. Strong enough and soft enough to get the job done, but not super white or super thick, and no fancy embossing or printing on the actual paper. That's perfect for me. I also like the colourful packaging - it looks good in our bathroom where we store the rolls in a basket beside the toilet. It actually brightens the place up. The rolls are double length I believe and last a fair while.

Best thing about it is that the boxes have heaps of rolls, so we find we don't order very often, and the last few rolls are packaged in bright red paper as a warning that you're getting low and need to re-order from them. Clever. The downside is storing it all - we have toilet paper rolls hidden all over the house!

It's not the cheapest, but it's for a good cause so I don't mind.

        • Thanks for the comprehensive review! :)

  • Cheap 1-ply rolls. They're like triple length rolls and soft enough for me. Cheapest per sheet too.

  • +3

Do not ever buy Kleenex, Quilton worse brands ever for toilet paper and paper towels. Quilton 3 ply doesn't justify it's quality, Kleenex simply too thin need to fold three times to use. Sorbent not much better

I go for homebrand two ply, they are actually good value for money not too thin or thick and priced ok. The only issue is when you first start the roll difficult to take out the first piece

  • +3

Is it weird that I only ever buy the cheap woolies/coles 2 ply?

    • +3

No they are the best. Just right and not too soft or hard and comfortable to use

      • +2

Phew - I felt like I'd missed the boat and that ozbargain had become ozsplurge all of a sudden!

  • +4

The woolies brand recycled paper is pretty good. I just buy whatever is cheapest and recycled. coles doesn't seem to stock recycled paper.

  • +3

Emporia flushable wipes. My ass deserves the best

  • +1

Sorben all the way but if too pricey then silken from bigw

    Quilton and Kleenex are crap

  • +3

I just use the standard Coles So Soft toilet rolls - $9 for 24 rolls. Perfect!

Who would have thought that I would ever be commenting on line about toilet rolls?

I really need to get a life :)

    • +3

Not really. I've often wondered of best toilet paper myself. It can make a big difference. The cheapest at woollies - 1ply is so thin you use 3 times as much. And thick soft toilet paper is just, well lovely, but not worth the billion dollars it usually costs. I'm surprised no one has mentioned cost per 100 sheets. I stick to around 25-30c per 100 sheets. It's a good way to figure out the cheapest. Most expensive is like 80c per 100 sheets which nearly 3 times as much.

      • Why stop there! Price per wipe, ie. 2 shhets a wipe thats .5 cents every time, now we all cut out going to the toilet once a day, that will save us $1.82 a year! Oh ma god. Lol :) why is quilton so shit btw people? Ive got some I have not used :/

    • +4

I've changed toilet roll products / brands a few times over the years simply because something better came along, as in better value.

What I've found works best in all situations for the past 2 years or so is the $9 Coles one for 24 rolls. There is nothing wrong with these, they are a perfect balance.

    • I just paid $9.90 for 24 4-ply Emporia rolls at Woolworths, but they were on special. I actually bought 2 packs (48).

  • +2

You should also consider the ply thickness gsm per ply. A lot of manufacturers has been reducing the gsm over the past years to cut cost.
The cheapest option is to get toilet paper which is imported from China.
I'd say 90% of the raw material used by Kimberley Clark, ABC, sca and Solaris is imported from Indonesia and China. The rest of the process is automated.

  • +4

Aldi's 3 ply TP is the best. $8.49 for 24 rolls. Really thick and softer than Coles' own brand version. WW's is a bit more expensive but not too bad.

    • I use those ones from Aldi too - highly recommended

    • I like Aldi's TP too.

      • They do with shopwings

  • "Who gives a crap", buy it online, gets delivered and I find the quality really good.

  • +1

Coles home brand (basic range) vs Aldi home brand (basic range) vs Woollies home brand (basic range) - Which one wins for 'value for money'?

    • The poo rating?

      • No, The pee rating. The pale yellow crown. :)

  • save yourselves $$$ on bidets and use one of these…does the trick! http://image.made-in-china.com/44f3j00LTEtmcIBqGrM/Plastic-G…

  • +5

200 grit sandpaper. I like it rough.

    • as a bonus the mother in-law, kids, family and friends all go before they come home rather than leeching of me.

  • +2

Quilton would have to be the best quality and value toilet paper around. It is what makes Australia a first world country(among other things). It makes me proud to be an Australian. The world would be a much more peaceful place if everyone used Quilton.

    • I agree. I love seeing the Aussie owned and made Quilton kick (wipe) ass!

I get the feeling most people here can't see why that's important.

  • +2

why use toilet paper, do a poo before you shower. save on paper. all goes in the same drain pipe eventually.

    • Lolwut

    • +2

      Are you a waffle stomper?

      • Man have a +1, never heard that term before and laughed my ass off

    • cant believe some one would down vote this, everyone is on here to save money. you want to save money then eliminate a product from your life.

then use that money to buy a book on understanding humour

      • Thats the first time ive been taken back by a comment on here, I was like o.O.

Do you clean said shower before others use it? :s

        • My shower is just a hose pipe held up by a coat hanger

  • +1

Guys can we please talk about what price point is a bargain for regular supermarket brand TP?

  • +2

if you really wanna save cash, just do it at work

    • Slightly better shitty suggestion than the one given by another gentleman above - to do it just before shower.

      • +1

        you think he actually serious?

        • Most of them aren't serious here and he's among majority, I believe, but how does it matter?

        • +1

@virhlpool: both comments are mine, you havent noticed

    • I used to as I like the idea of getting paid for taking a dump but they kinda wrecked that with their paper choice. It's probably closer to cling wrap, you need 10 meters of it and still end up with crap everywhere.

    • +1

Can you control when to go? I never get the urge at work unless it's a stomache ache.

And I definitely don't want to be using public toilets.

Saving a tiny amount of money is not worth hygiene compromise.

      • 4:30 pm without fail

  • +1

Is it just me or the quilton quality has somewhat declined ? I remember it used to be softer. I have used quilton but was using the Coles premium brand since it launched now recently bought kleenex them quilton off the specials and am very disappointed, the Kleenex I knew to be inferior to quilton (and still is) but I remember quilton to be way better than the Coles premium brand… or is this just me?

    • +2

They have cut costs hence quality declined. Instead of putting price up, they cut quality. 3 ply Coles or Woolies is actually better than Quilton.

Quilton is not the same as a decade ago.

Kleenex is rubbish as usual. Even their tissue boxes are pretty crap

Sorbent slightly better than Kleenex. However their large and thick boxed tissue is very good. But expensive you wouldn't want to use that for your bum.

    • They're running out of old growth forest to log.

  • Aldi. The one that's the cheapest according to unit price.

  • -1

for the record, i dont poop in the shower.

i buy quinton, its is always 26c per 100 sheets, best i have seen is 22c.

    • Pretty sure the Aldi one is cheaper. "Confidence" $3.59, 12x pack, 2 ply. I think it's 19 cents.

      • +1

        2 ply only

You end up with half ur terd on ur finger

        • Everyone doubles over toilet paper due to the thin stuff. You can't break people's habits. So may as well save some money since they'll waste it anyway.

        • @GregMonarch: if your doubling it up your using it twice as quick thus spending more

  • Sorbent a big fail for how the seal the roll - takes too much effort to unseal like they have their spot welding settings up too high. Also I need the roll presentable for accommodation, so have to waste 4 or 5 mangled layers.

Quilton is sealed as it should be - just enough. I can unstick the first square and fold it neatly into an arrow.

    • I wondered about hotel folded arrowed toilet paper. It's right up there for token gestures that don't have scientific purpose.

    • Break it a sheet back from end then pull off first sheet…

      • Prob is their glue has soaked through a few layers

        • Oh my pack at home (used like 5 rolls in 4 months cos I work 6 days 11 hour days lol) none have been past first layer.

        • @Slippery Fish: Could have been a dud batch I got - I only ever bought them once.

        • @Janko: same, my brother uses aldi and they are pretty good and reasonably cheap…

  • +1

takes too much effort to unseal

Yeh, tearing through TP really difficult. I get a weightlifter to come in and mine.

  • The truth is never buy any toilet paper same brand as work does. They are most horrible. I don't even know if I've been wiping my bum clean or actually too thin run thru to my hands….the residue left over can cause irritation to your arse! Even if I fold four times, a slight rub goes thru the paper.

    It's beyond a joke!

  • And you call yourselves OzBargainers!
Public toilet for me… saving big bucks on on toilet paper.
