$136/year for SSL is hardly a deal. For example, Comodo charges less. Or you can self-sign for free with the EFF tool.

None of those are EV with a green bar…..

      • Are you trolling?

        $99
        PER YEAR
        EV SSL Certificate
The green address bar is widely recognized as assurance that a site is safe to do business with. Enjoy the high degree of trust!

Self-signing is not extended validation (EV) but it's free. It's free so just renew your certs. The address bar isn't green but the padlock and "Secure" shows up.

        • Not at all - you're comparing a free product against a premium product which offers the green bar.
Yes the protection is exactly the same, however it's about marketing and the EV cert is poised as the premium product on the market to yo green bar

Edit: reread your post sorry - didn't notice that comodo is ev too.

        • @jomojomo: You're right, I also mentioned that you can get virtually the same product for free, and there are cost reasons that Let's Encrypt cannot produce EV certs. The free certs don't make it not a deal because they are different.

I was trying to say that US$99 seems to be standard pricing for the product, so it doesn't seem like a deal, especially when we can find Comodo EV cert resellers offering less than standard pricing. I saw around US$84/year for two year Comodo EV SSL certificates.

        • @twocsies:

Many people do not like to deal with Comodo, and they are cheaper yes, but you don't get as good service compared to dealing with GeoTrust . We often deal with customers that end up cancelling their Comodo EV SSL to get a GeoTrust EV SSL.
If you want a comodo EV SSL you are more then welcome to get one: https://www.ssltrust.com.au/comodo-ssl/ev-ssl

@PixelPaul: On the plus side, ssltrust does seem to have the cheapest GeoTrust EV certificates, so I guess someone very keen on that specific product could find a deal here.

        • @twocsies: By the way, I don't think most browsers show the green bar anymore. Geotrust's page on this is outdated, doesn't even show Edge browser. https://www.geotrust.com/ssl/extended-validation-ssl/

This is ad, not a deal, can find cheaper elsewhere, one example is comodo above.

    • This is a deal. because MANY people do not like to deal with Comodo. We often deal with customers that end up cancelling their Comodo EV SSL to get a GeoTrust EV SSL as GeoTrust are a much nicer company to deal with and also offer a better service.
