A Standard Equipment List of OzBargainer

After the meeting with Scott an hour ago, I came across a idea of standard equipment list of OzBargainer. The equipment does not have to be in physical. It can be an online account or something else.

Let me start first.

  • 28 Degrees credit card
  • Citibank Plus card, Cashrewards account
  • Multiple AMEX cards
  • eBay account

Why did you edit your comment? The reinforced F5 key was hilarious!

      • +14

Well, I figured everyone should have a mechanical keyboard by now.

        • +18

Are you sure that's enough? Most mechanicals are only rated to 50 million keystrokes….

        • +3

          @Diji1:

Depends on how many treasures Scotty releases into the wild.šŸ˜

        • +3

          @Diji1: per key?

        • +6

          @fruit:
You can buy a USB-connected key pad with only the "F5" button.
I saw it and it made me chuckle.

        • +1

@Kangal: oh nice do you still have the link?

        • +1

          @fruit:
          Unfortunately not.
I saw it whilst surfing one of those websites that sells plenty of novelty items.

I'm sure you might be able to Google for it, I mean, I can't be the only one that found it funny.

        • +3

My ordinary keyboard was $4 at Woolworths.

        • @PJC:

Ain't no $4 Woolies keyboard gonna survive no fitty million hits

        • +1

@mgowen: Fair enough. Nor will I.

        • @PJC: I hope you bought it using discounted egift cards to at least get it down to $3.80

        • @fruit:

You can use something like this, and install software to make the button map to F5.

          https://www.amazon.com/Dream-Cheeky-902-Electronic-Referenceā€¦

        • @newdad: No, I hardly ever go to Woolworths. And I have never purchased an Eneloop. I have many alkaline batteries to use up, though.

        • @Kangal: Something like this?

        • +1

          @rvsure:
          Similar.
It was just one giant square keyboard button and it wrote "F5" on it.

I might Google for it when I get back home. My search history definitely isn't going to help :(

EDR cards aren't as good as they once were

    • +23

Several email addresses to register multiple times.

Protip: you can recycle the one gmail address (like a spam address) by adding a period in any part of it, or adding "+anything" to the end, like this:

[email protected] = [email protected] = [email protected] = [email protected]

and so on. All goes to the one inbox, and you can see which one it went to in the "to" field of an email.

Saves the hassle of making new email addresses/keeping track, and you have it all in one place. It's also permanent unlike mailnator and won't be blocked signing up to places.

      • +2

interesting as I wasn't aware of this and I thought i was getting spammed as someone else is using a similar id…

e.g. if you have [email protected], would gmail allow you to create [email protected]?
if yes, then if i send an email to [email protected].. who will receive it..

While i was typing this, I thought of testing it out which i will do now… cheers..

        • +4

Use @googlemail.com instead of @gmail.com, redirects to the same account. Works on most sites - 2 emails from each account! :D

      • -1

        The dot will not work
I have two separate email addresses with and without dot

The + however works, see https://support.google.com/mail/answer/12096?hl=en

      • Can confirm the +banana trick works LOL

    • +1

      Don't forget the Xiaomi Powerbanks!!

    • +2

It's easier just to pay for your own domain, and make up email accounts on it. Most email servers let you set a "main account" that all email is forwarded to if it's destined for an account that doesn't exist. So you can have [email protected], and any email sent to [email protected] [email protected] will go to your account.

I've done it for years, so I can work out which companies sell / share my personal information.

      • How much are the yearly running costs of doing so, and the setup effort required?

        • The cost of domain registration is about $15 per year. Email can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be, based on whether you host it yourself. Personally I just host my email with Google and let them do all the work.

        • @Praeto: When you mean domain registration- is that also to setup a website or just email?

VERY important: mention the huge discount first before telling the paid price

      • +1

        haha, indeed!

Sometimes I go with, how much would you pay for this ?

This seems to be best suited to something that is beyond the realm of possibility of them buying - ie. clothes

Then when the amazing discount undercuts it, you're golden :-)

Large storage room for SSD's and eneloops.

    • understanding bank manager for credit card limit increases
  • +1

Why the 28 and the citibank out of curiosity?
I know one of them is an international fee less card right?

I've already got a bankwest platinum master myself so intl transactions are covered, but any other benefits?

I really need to get that second amex with the referral bonus and spend 500 thing if it's still going. One card ain't enough

    • Bankwest won't accept everyone like 28 Degrees does.

      • Can I get one with crap credit rating?

        • One way to find out…

          i'll loan you $100

        • +1

@BuyoTheCat: Sounds like you might be donating $100…

    • +1

28 degrees for all credit purchases for foreign currency and if you pay it off early the extra price protection ($10 drop only), you used to be able to top it over your limit and withdraw from atm without extra charge but they closed this loophole hence citibank for any cash withdrawals when overseas

    • +3

28 degrees price protection for me is a godsend. I dont have to wait for sales anymore, and if I want to buy console games, can claim the difference when the price drops within 6 months.

      • Does my Bankwest card offer that and does it cover PayPal transactions through eBay?
Surely there's a fee or some kind of excess?

        • sorry, dont have a bankwest account, but 28 degs does as long as you choose that credit card as a payment method at the checkout :)

        • Not sure about bank West, a lot of the banks have this but the price drop must be $50 or more, haven't tried ebay but assume it would if it was a retail store on ebay I. E the good guys, target, Bing Lee etc. There is a fee involved. 0.5% of your statement balance up to a max of $50 . However if you pay off your card before statement comes out then 0.5% of 0 is… 0!

      • Does 28 degrees price protection only apply for the price drop from the retailer you purchase from, or does it apply to whatever places with a cheaper price?

        • +1

only from the retailer that you purchased from. $10 minimum drop after 6 months of purchase. But it can be any location Australia wide

        • @kza2610: Does it work if the discounted price is via coupon?

        • @lostn: hmm not sure sorry, havent tried. Think it has to be an advertised price?

      • +1

The coles MasterCard does exactly the same thing, except the price drop duration is 24 months instead of 6 months (can also claim for multiple price drops). Also if you damage something by accident in six months and get a repair quote, they'll pay for that too.

        • ooo hey pretty good. 28 deg does the damage one as well for 6 months. Coles is 1% but 28 is 0.5% premium. i might get the coles one for my partner for all console game purchases aha

        • +1

@kza2610: if you pay off the balance a few days before the statement is generated, then the shoppers protection insurance is $0.

    • The citibank is a debit card so you can use it as effectively a pre-paid transaction free card for overseas (doesn't 'lock in the rate' like the bank cards though).

    • It looks more like this:

      • 28 Degrees
      • Citibank Signature (after several free upgrades)
      • ING 5% cashback (think it's finished now)
    • +1

28 Degrees and Citibank are the recommended cards for overseas travel.
Use the Citibank for most but it's best to have a credit card for emergencies.

      • how about ANZ Reward Travel Adventure card? it provides complimentary travel insurance while 28 Degrees doesn't (I think).

        • Sure, but it also has an annual fee (offset by the complimentary flight), where as 28 Degrees is free.

        • +4

Bankwest Zero platinum provides insurance AND doesn't have a Bpay fee.

      • I'm thinking of closing my 28 degrees CC because I haven't used it in a year… Citibank plus does almost exactly the same thing, except from using it overseas for hotel authorisations and/or emergencies, for that I'll use a CC for those purposes.

The coles rewards MC also is free of intl tx fee (just jump back to the no annual fee card every year for a while to avoid the annual fee. It also has the best price drop insurance ever), so is the Macquarie debit card. And bankwest zero platinum. Just use the Citibank debit card to withdraw from overseas ATM.

      • Is Citibank's online banking still heinous?

  • +7

People seem to break or upgrade their headphones an awful lot. My first Ozbargain piece of advice is stop breaking your headphones. Savings.

    • +1

I usually buy an elcheapo pair from aliexpress and then Test them.if they are good then I buy a half dozen more. That said , I also tend to buy elcheapo headphones whether i need them or not. My current elcheapo test pair has lasted 2 years so far and there are another 6 pairs in a draw. (It's usually my kids who ruin them regularly)

      • +4

If it's for kids that's one thing, but more expensive earphones sound much better than the cheapos and have a removable cable (usually the source of issues) which can be replaced. I've had the same pair for about 4 years now, replaced the cable a number of times but they still work great, and I throw them around a lot.

        • What kind is that?

        • Would also be interested to hear the pair of earphones you own.

        • @kpm:

I don't know about RedSky, but all my headphones are Sennheiser, and I'm yet to have a pair die. My oldest pair are 17 years old, another is 16 or so. The only thing I've done to them is replace the ear pads a year back, and that was only because I was gifting the 16 year old pair to my dad.

          These are the 17 year old HD590s - http://imgur.com/GWlBw5K

        • @Hirolol:
          @kpm:

Triple Fi. 10s. Full disclosure, I do keep them in a carry box and the connector is getting a bit loose after so many years but they still sound great.

There would be much sturdier metal earphones with detachable cables now than those, they're plastic. They don't sell them anymore either.

If you're in the market for new earphones, recommend going down this list and choosing ones that are in your price range, sturdy and have detachable cables:

          http://theheadphonelist.com/headphone-list/

      • +1

Just keep in mind that sometimes buying the more expensive item that will last longer is just as Ozbargain as buying the cheap ones! I have a couple of pairs of Sennheiser headphones that are in the same shape now that they were 17 years ago when I first bought them.

        • Sennheiser tend to offer a whole host of replacement parts on many of their professional headphones. One of the reasons I used to have the HD600s and now have the Amperior. They do tend to charge somewhat extortionate prices for them though. Luckily there will often be third party alternatives for things like earpads / headband cushions.

Generally pretty happy with the build quality on the ones I've owned. Strictly you can do better with build quality (e.g. the Beyer DT-880s are build like a tank vs. the HD600 / 650s, and the V-Moda Crossfade are going to be more durable than the Amperior / HD25-1 IIs) but each choice comes with its own comprimises.

Still miles better than anything that the general plastickiness of Monster / Bose has to offer.

      • Can you share the weblink please? I would like to have a go.

    For smartphone apps and SIMs:

    • Entertainment card, preferably the digital version.
    • The stocard app, loaded with membership cards, or scans of discount barcodes (e.g. great for woolies 10% codes).
    • Multiple SIMs (either from discount starter packs, or free $2 packs), all registered for guzman y gomez free burrito, free $10 Optus cash (if on optus network), TGG $25 voucher, and messina $10 credit.
    • I'm finding the 7-eleven fuel app, loaded with $40 credit + in NSW a bookmark for the Fuel Check website on my phone ( https://www.fuelcheck.nsw.gov.au/app ) to be a very handy combo. Been using for the last 3 fuel cycles, and have locked in the lowest price of the fuel cycle each time, then have 7 days to fill up, so I wait until the tank is nearly empty, or the morning of the 7th day. Just look for all the BP or Coles Express servos hiking their prices, they usually hike about a day before 7-11 raise their prices.
    • What is free $10 optus cash?

      • It's this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/267475 … basically if you on the Optus network (Optus, Amaysim, Coles mobile, etc), then you can register with the "Cash by Optus" app, and it generates a credit card preloaded with $10. You can also get accessories and use it for paywave, and/or use the $10 credit card to register in the messina app, uber app, etc.
