Dam shame about coil whine in these xps range.

    • Didn't know they had such a problem.

      • Type in coil whine xps in google. Many many reports regarding this persistent issue especially with XPS. It's even on these ones so DELL don't give a rats about it to retify the issue.

        • I thought the 9550 models had the charger brick issue and were provided new chargers to buyers.

        • @bargain crazy: Coil whine on charger bricks when xps machines are doing intense workload for all their xps chargers too; not only 9550 models.
The coil whine i'm on about are near top left corner around keyboard when browsing or general usage.
I would say 99% of all xps have them. Some say its motherboard and some say design flaw.

        • +5

          @dingdong3000:

Considering how many people own one of these, I wouldn't say it's a problem. Seems like a few people experience it, but most get use to it. It's pretty silent from my experience.

          http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/…

        • +5

@dingdong3000: More like 99% of XPS owners who complain about coil whine on the internet have it.

We have two in the family (9350 series) and either it's inaudible or entirely absent.

        • @niner: I'm not that bothered as long as i'm not in a quiet room/area to which its very noticeable. It's still annoying to say the least.

        • +1

@branko: You must be in that lucky 1% ;)

Seriously i've had 2 replacements and still occurs. Apparently DELL are doing a new motherboard revision to fix coil whine at the end of this month but i won't hold my breath to it.

        • +1

@dingdong3000: This is the first i am hearing about it. Have been using one for more than a year. My brother has one too.

        • @carlJack: Some don't notice it at all but its there.

        • @dingdong3000: If that's the case I might hold off until next month and try to get a newer revision. I'm sure this 20% off deal will happen again. It seems endless.

        • never had the problem with mine.

        • +1

@lostn: someone asked dell support regarding coil whine last month. this was their response..
          https://imgur.com/gallery/nJlKT
so i guess by the end of this year

          credit to raibbl

        • @dingdong3000:

If you buy it now, will Dell replace yours with a brand new unit that has a new motherboard when it releases?

        • @lostn: I don't think they'll give you brand new unit. They will replace the motherboard on your existing XPS.

        • @dingdong3000: I'll wait then.

      • Coil whine can happen in a number of place. For the XPS the common ones are:
        1) Power adaptor
        2) Top left near charging port when plugged in and charging - high pitch buzzing noise
        3) Intel graphics chip. Whine is a lower pitch buzzing sound on screen activity which sounds more similar to an old HDD read/write

Dell has acknowledged issues 1 and 2 to an extent and attempt part replacements for those units. Issue 3 is actually the biggest one with the most complaints and there is no fix. Dell do not acknowledge this is a problem and will probably tell you they cant hear anything out of the ordinary. It happens on both the 6th gen and 7th gen.

This is probably the only community thread which got an actual response. Plenty of other threads from other users complaining about the new 9360 as well:

    • +3

Rolling out a large batch of these, no whine noticeable in the 5 or 6 I've given out so far.
Must have been fixed in the 7th gen systems.

      • Nah, a few of the Kaby Lake XPS laptops have this too.

      • Mine didn't have them at all until after couple weeks or so. This review http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-13-9360-QHD-i5-7200U-N… has pointed out coil whine in system noise section

      • Block at work received his XPS 13 last week.

Immediately discovered the coil whine problem is evident.

On the phone with Dell and organised a refund.

      • +1

We've got 4 of the 2015 models here at work, no whine at all and the machines do video editing so they definitely draw the max power

    • Still occurs

    • +1

This was supposedly a problem with the ones two years ago that I bought. No coil whine on my machine for the last two years….

    • +1

It's like you think your reading of one article where people had coil whine on these notebooks means you can make a blanket statement about the entire range

  • +2

Looks like it doesn't have a touch panel though. Shame.

    • +1

the QHD touch is nice, each to their own, i prefer battery life over the screen tho i've had one next to me whilst at work from about 930 till leaving doing imaging and software installs all day and battery was still good maybe about 20-25% left

      • The QHD isn't really worth the fuss, I have it and personally would give it up without a hesitation

    • +1

For $1600? Spend some money cheapo

      • It's not $1600 is it? It is a $2200 laptop, with $200 discount and then a 20% discount.

You can get the last generation model from Microsoft Store for the same price. Slower CPU, but touch screen with 3000x1800 resolution.

        • +1

I bought the QHD version. Trust me, get this one instead. Battery life is about 4.5 hours max. This version is about double that. And at 13.3 inch screen size, 1080p is more than enough. And don't hold your breath on getting the QHD @ 1600. I paid $2123. Lowest I've seen them is the 2k mark.

        • @snagseb:

Isn't there a model with touch and full HD?

        • @nushydude:

Unfortunately not. I think the U.S may have one, but not in Aus.

  • OP, did you actually buy this with the discount? I'm trying, and every time I enter the code I get "We removed any vouchers you already applied. You can try using them on a future purchase." - AFAIK, I have never bought anything with this code before. :/

    • +1

You need to select the payment method first and then add the code. It should work then. Some strange issue in ebay.

      • Thank you. After some messing around with verifications with PayPal, etc, finally got it to work. Finicky bloody interface, lol :)

  • +1

Good deal - but I would rather this if portability isn't everything. Still a 7th Gen i7 and 512gb SSD is a bit nicer..

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-7000-2-in-1-7th-…

    • +1

Thanks mate. Liking this one a lot more so pulled the trigger.

Better stats for less money plus touch screen

      • No worries! Hope you enjoy it.

I'm waiting for some good deals on the XPS 15 for myself.

    • Was about to pull the trigger at the 15% discount on the Dell website right now - thanks for saving me about $140 :)

Should say that model also has the QHD touchscreen… Brings the battery life down to a meagre 13 hours. Don't know how I'll handle that… I hope i'll be OK! ;)

  • This, or a Thinkpad Carbon when next on sale? Scotty? TA?

    • +6

I went from the Thinkpad Carbon X1 (the one with the touch strip, i7-4500U i think?) to the previous gen (i7-5500U) Dell xps 13. Both were maxed out specs with touchscreens. So, here is a little comparison from my experience:
Keyboard: Lenovo wins. Dell XPS isn't bad, but the response and the feel to the Lenovo keys just feel so much better.
Screen: Dell wins, the main reason I bought it was for the infinity screen.
Battery Life: 4-5 hours for both? I didn't really notice and increase in battery life from the 5th gen Intel processor.
Other: Lenovo has a fingerprint reader (it is so useful, totally miss it on my current dell) & also 4G connectivity , though I never used this function).
Currently, I favor the Lenovo thinkpad series over the Dell XPS. Trying to sell my XPS and go back to Thinkpad. This deal is not good for me as it reduces my XPS value more ><

  • Thanks OP, was waiting for a deal on this or the MBP line.

    • +4

Save the money. Go on a holiday. Stuff crApple.

    • +1

Get this/Latitude models or refurbished last gen macbook line.
Punish Apple, say no to adapters!

      • They messed up the MBP line. Sure it's great but the price performance ratio is WAY too big. I have no idea who their customer segment is now if not the rich Chinese market. That being said, it is a nice notebook of the future but they really screwed it up if they're expecting users to buy all the adapters needed to fix the peripherals on such as iPhone cables and apple watch cables. What's the joke about the 3.5mm headset/lightning earphones anyway. Apple product line looks fragmented and difficult to synchronize between phone/MBP/iPod

        • it is a nice notebook of the future

They put a really crappy keyboard on what is supposed to be a 'pro' machine, I would hate to have to type on this all day at work.

  • +2

I personally think if you're not going for the QHD+ screen, you may as well get i5 and save some money and battery power.

EDIT: Only Windows 10 Home. :/

I have a lot of grievances with W10 that Pro at least somewhat mitigates. You can't use gpedit with Home as far as I know. Not even sure if you can reschedule update installs either.

  • If you want a good Dell laptop that is light (1.8kg), NO COIL whine, has amazing build quality and good battery life then go for a Dell Latitude 14 7000. These are built to withstand all forms of abuse.

    • Do you know how widespread the coil whine is on XPS?

    • lolwut? http://www.dell.com/au/business/p/latitude-e7450-ultrabook/p…
This is the latitude 14 7000 that came up from a google search.
Over $4000 for a laptop with only 4GB RAM, only full HD screen and only integrated graphics… So your paying $3000 purely for build quality? I better be able to run over it with my tank… Were you suggesting a different model/price configuration? I agree latitudes are great laptop but $4k is crazy
Edit: The refurbished one above looks like a good price.

      • +2

Go to the Dell OUtlet and get an 'As New' or 'Refurbished' one. They range from $799 to $1400 (QHD screen, 16GB RAM, 512 GB SSD)

They're not really meant to be purchased by normal consumers from the online store at RRP. Most large businesses buy in bulk and pay like $1500 per laptop. The $4000 price tag is just to sway consumers away from the laptop. lol

  • +1

    ***********For those with coil whine*******************

Do you still get it while in the BIOS, before any windows drivers have loaded?

    • +1

Yeah its still there though very minimal in BIOS. It starts as soon as dell logo appear on startup. I heard previous sound/intel graphic drivers can minimize the whine.

  • Great deal… darn it just bought the Lenovo (for a bit over 1k on https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/271470 deal with the 256GB SSD) - but actually wanted this but could not justify paying 2x

  • Battery life on these with typical use wi-fi browsing etc ?

    • +1

      13 hours of netflix apparently

      • thank you

  • +3

I looked at the bigger brother: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-13-7th-Gen-Intel-Core-i7…

    • 3200 x 1800 touchscreen
    • 16GB RAM
    • 512GB SSD
    • extra 90 grams

    $2,990 - $600 (CHEERS20) - $272 (TRS) = $2,118.
So freaking close to getting under the magical $2k mark.

Aside from the screen quality, both of these machines put the new MBP 13.3" to shame (and 33% cheaper!)

    • Thats a fantastic deal

    • +3

      90 grams is super light!

      • +2

EXTRA 90 grams (for the touchscreen)
        Damnit :)

    • What's TRS?

      • +5

        Tourist Refund Scheme.
        https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour

Travel overseas within 2 months of making the purchase and you receive the GST back on the item (a little under 10%).
(Minimum purchase of $300, and is a little more legitimate when the item value is under $1,000. For anything over $1,000 you should declare it when you reenter the country, and re-pay the GST).

    • Wow, I am practically paying for this for 7370 m5 256 8gb touch. Its thinner and lighter, and I don't need the extra ram or ssd but the i7 might be nice if it doesn't eat too much more into the battery power

  • How does this compare to the inspiron 7000 with infinity display, looks much better in moneh

  • I got the 15 inch version for my gf last year for her birthday and its great!

    • +6

That's over twice the normal size. Poor girl.

      • Nah,the bigger the better :)

      • I'm sure she's had bigger

      • sigh i wish :( :)

  • Had mine for over a year now, nothing to big complain about. The down side of having a touch-screen (extra $500) is that your battery recommended time by Dell will pretty much be cut short, about 4hrs at most from a full charge

Google is a search engine, if you google "coil whine" you certain will find something there, there could be bad batches out there and ive also encountered loose touch-pad but with good customer service you should be able to get it exchange or refund if its not up to your expectation

apart from that everyone that along that owns an xps loves it and did get regret a single thing

  • Remember the cashback from cash rewards! 1.25%

  • Anyone knows if this has a touch display?

    • No, it doesn't have a touch display.

  • Does this have thunderbolt?

    • +2

      Yep 1 USB-C with thunderbolt 3 support

  • +1

Just bought this last week. Is there any way to get this deal retrospectively? No coil whine btw

  • anyone have any idea if GST included? paypal, ebay, have no mention of it. Paypal receipt says "GST: " but then its blank (normally would say 0% or 10%?).

    • +1

Wait for official invoice from dell in the box. I bought the i5 in the last deal. It includes gst

    • +2

Just received official Dell invoice - does state the GST ($190.82).

  • Anyone know how long before Dell eBay send you an order acknowledgement?
From Dell.com it usually takes 20 mins with a full breakdown of what you ordered.

    • i havent got anything, and ordered yesterday
