Data Free Netflix, Presto, Stan, ABC/Kids iView (Mobile TV Streams) for Eligible Optus Customers On Select Plans

130

Just found this on the Whistle out website. Might be useful to some who like to catch up on their favorite shows while travelling to work

Optus' mobile data-free streaming offer now covers all of Australia's major services, thanks to today's addition of Stan. Customers on select post-paid and mobile broadband plans are able to pay an extra $10 a month to stream content through Netflix, Presto and Stan without using their monthly data allowance.

In addition, ABC's iview and Kids iview app are both all usable data-free through the offer. This applies to catch-up content as well as live-streaming of all ABC channels.

Unmetered streaming can be tacked onto any new or existing Optus post-paid mobile or mobile broadband plan for an additional $10 per month. Customers taking up 24 month contracts worth $100 or more per month get data-free streaming included in their plan.

Netflix says that watching an hour of standard content through its service can use as much 1GB of data. Optus bills excess data usage at $10 per gigabyte. As such, paying an extra $10 per month for data-free streaming is a reasonably attractive add-on for subscribers streaming more than an hour of video on the go in a month.

    Free data, great.
Stuttery, buffering, useless POS streaming service. You get what you pay for lol

I'm with amaysim (optus) and occasionally stream some shows when i have extra data at the end of the month. Have never had any of these problems you mentioned

      • I think the free streaming with this promo is limited to 1.5Mbit, which is probably why you would get the buffering.

Isn't a deal as it's standard now for a couple of months. Also includes multiple audio streaming services like Spotify I believe.
Haven't had any problems like @Neo. @Neo are you a current customer?

Isn't a deal as it's standard now for a couple of months.

according to whistle out, only since 31 October 2016

Maybe you are referring to an expired deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262469

I think this might be including all these services. I think abc/Stan might have been added since then as it's definitely had Netflix and a few others longer

Yeah as far as I've been aware its been a deal since at least I started with optus again.(February)

My motto is "Optus, never again"

    • You're probably thinking of their free music streaming that they've offered for a while - Spotify, Google Play Music etc.

This offer of video would use significantly more data. I'm pretty keen on it for that reason.

      • No Netflix and Presto or Stan came in at the same time, I've been using them with free data for a couple months

        • Cool. This is the first that I've heard of it. Congrats on the deal - turns out that I'm ineligible for some reason.

  • +1

for what it's worth, just confirming that the cost of your Netflix/Stan/Presto/etc subscription isn't included in this plan, just that the data to access these sites/services isn't metered.

    • Yeah thats right

Data free streaming for those with a decent commute or want to watch Netflix outside of home for $10 extra is a bargain.

    • Yep. If only I could figure out how to sign up!

      • I called up before to get data free music, so I'm assuming you'll need to give them a buzz too

        • I found the link on their site, and despite signing up for a new 12 month contract recently, it said that I wasn't eligible. Perhaps it's because I'm on a BYO phone (sim only) plan, and not a phone and sim plan.

  • This is on for few months now.

  • I wish it included Foxtel Go and Foxtel Play.
