Fiji Airways Peak Season Fares Sydney to San Francisco/Los Angeles to Sydney - $1599/Adult, $1299/Child via Bluepowder

103

just got some very inexpensive flights to USA mainland from a snow tour operator, but just bought flights, no other purchase was necessary.

Speak to Michael

Cost was only $1599 for each adult & $1299 for each child.

We're flying to San Francisco from Sydney direct on December 29, back from LA, night of January 22 to Sydney direct.

So we get home, just before school starts back.

Flying Fiji Airways, so we get Qantas frequent flyer points.

The only extra was to pay by credit card (paid with American Express & cost 2.6%)

We just got the actual tickets. They said they had a dozen more & others leaving January 5, coming home January 21.

They said deal is only if pay by next Thursday December 1 now, while they lasted.

    Hello. Is your name Michael?

    • +1

Surely not, it says 'they said'… ;)

      • There are 2 Michaels? Nice. That must get confusing.

is that what we need to transport to get such a cheap price?

  • +5

$1600 return to the states? Deal? There have been a half dozen deals recently for literally half the price.

    • +3

The price was about $800-$1000 cheaper per adult, than anything else out there, in peak season. We have to go in school holidays, no option, as kids have to be back at school on time.

      • +1

This is something I don't get.
Your kids missing a week or two of school will literally save your family thousands of dollars.
Your kids must be learning a hell of a lot more at school than mine…

        • +3

Just to play devil's advocate:- kids get ~12 weeks holidays a year, whereas most employed people get 4 weeks annual leave a year. With two working parents (which I believe is the norm), that already leaves a 4 week hole where you have to rely on family or holiday care or whatever just to look after them.

Wanting to take holidays outside of school holidays means you likely have to take annual leave to look after kids on school holidays, and then again when you want to actually go on holiday.

        • @djkelly69:
Your kids don't forage in the wilderness alone when you have to work and it is school holidays?
I guess some parents just can't step up to the OzBargain lifestyle!

        • @mskeggs: They do, but don't tell anyone…

    • +2

To be fair booking for peak tourist time this close to leaving it's not bad but yeah if you go outside peak you'll save.

  • Website has an online chat service - perhaps Michael is there to answer your questions.

  • no bargains here move along…..

    • +2

nah, do a search online for U.S. mainland & nothing, even via China, comes up under about $2200 for an adult (we don't want to go long way via China/Asia or Middle East)

      • +1

Its all a matter of timing late November/early jan fares were up for grabs as little as a month ago. $870

        • +4

Think you might have meant departing late November, coming home early January.

Have been looking at fares everyday now for months.

There were some $1500 fares departing early January, but we missed them, as weren't quick enough.

we have to go school holidays & preferably after Christmas, so think we did very well, but would like to hear of any better deal around on nonstop or direct flights.

We're flying San Fran to Las Vegas on Southwest for $29 U.S. (about $39 Au) including 2 checked bags, which is very cheap for probably the best airline over there.

  • +2

It's not bad for this close to takeoff in peak season (about 600 dollars or so cheaper than best I can see for exact dates and route) but if you booked further out you could probably get a far better ticket.

Fiji Aiways iirc have shocking layovers - what is the total travel time?

I can see Asiana to LAX return same time as yours (~24hrs each way) for about the same price and IIRC you can get frequent fliers with Qantas through them. Far better airline too.

    • +1

Asiana is Korean, recently crashed at San Francisco. Our flights are 17 hours going over & 19 hours coming home. We have 2 hours to kill on way over & 3 on way back, but have flown them before & that's fine.

By time you get off, you get back on same aircraft in less time that that, plus they have brand new jets.

    • they told us Fiji Airways, which Qantas owns 1/2,have better safety record than Qantas.

      • Of course they do, and more than Asiana cause they don't fly as much (heck their fleet size is 9 vs 82).

I haven't flown Fiji but have Asiana.

        http://www.worldairlineawards.com/awards/world_airline_ratin…
This metric takes many things into account including Safety. Asiana ranks #16 - no issue with that.

        • -2

Asiana killed a few people, when they landed short at San Fran recently, plus long extra time to get there if 24 hours is correct.

  • Rip off. There have been multiple deals for flights under $900 return to LA. Maybe it is OK for peak but I wouldn't go at that time for that price.. not worth it..

    • +1

We looked at Qantas, Virgin, American, Delta, all the nonstop options plus Air New Zealand & most were around $2500.

If you didn't mind as bad connection in Auckland was a bit cheaper.

We can't go in low season, like most families with kids at school.

      • How long is the 'bad' connection?

Air New Zealand is a top trans-pacific carrier.

        • can't remember exactly, but it was like 8 or 9 hours. Apparently, the kiwis do this, offer a cheaper fare with bad connections & then try to upsell you to better connections.

Air New Zealand have terrible safety record. Was watching air crash investigations not long ago. They lost an airbus into Med, on a test flight, coming off lease from some European Airline. That was only a few years ago.

  • I did this flight last year. The new Air Fiji planes are pretty good but we got an old plane on the return leg NAN-SYD due to emergency maintenance and it was horrendous. It's about on par with the Air NZ stopover in AKL but ideally you'd get a direct flight if the pricing is the same.

    • +1

checked the Fiji Air website & all their long haul aircraft are new A330-200's or A330-300 & read somewhere the average age was a year. We flew on the old Singapore Airlines 747's a few years back (the ex Ansett ones) & they were very tired, but all gone to the desert now.

      • They still fly old 737s but the regular service SYD <> NAN is an A330.

        • +1

          737-700 & -800 & they are about same age as Qantas/Virgin.

We looked at stopping in Fiji on way home for a day or 2. The A330's fly LA/Fiji/Sydney daily & depart Fiji about 9am everyday, which would have meant getting up very early. They also have a daily flight at 6.30pm, which we were thinking of getting. It's a 737. But, the financial controller(wy wife) said no, kids needs to settle down at home for a day or 2 before school.

We also looked at stopping on way over, but that was going to increase airfares quite a bit. Some days they have 3 nonstop flights Sydney to Nadi. One a 6.30am everyday is a 737, one some days at 10.30am is a 737 & the one at 12.45pm is an A330. They also have a few extra flights Sydney to Fiji during school holidays. They have an extra flight on Monday December 26 at 5pm, which gets into fiji about 11pm local time.

Curiously Fiji has recently changed their departure tax to $200 Fijian for an adult with is about $130 Au, but only if you spend more than 72 hours in Fiji. Thought they wanted you to spend as much time as possible in Fiji, as think their economy relies heavily on tourism.

        • They are in pretty bad condition though. In urgent need of a refurb.

  • +1

    Please change the title!
Whilst this is actually a good deal for the peak season it is pretty ordinary price for any other time.
People are confused as it is not specifically mentioned in your description - and I bet you would get many more +ve should you put "in Peak season" in the title.
Not going to use this deal, but up-voted the deal as some people may actually benefit from it.

    • ok done

  • The main point here is you left it too late. If you planned ahead, there were better deals, one or two months back. Sure, it's a great price for tickets 1 month away in peak season, but not cheap imho.

    • +1

yes but not much cheaper at $1500.

We try to do this trip every year or every 2nd year & every time, except 2016, we try to book early when fares are cheapest like in March, but this year, a few things came up & we couldn't commit earlier.

      • your yardstick is different to mine, I'm comparing it to sub $1K prices.

        • +1

there are never $1000 fares around Xmas, except at start of GFC in about 2007-8.

  • BTW

www.southwest.com seem to be having one big rolling sale for most of January & February. We got $29 u.s. fares San Fran to Vegas & Denver, back to LAX for $40 u.s.

Are they affiliated with KISS Travel by any chance?

  • Despite this sounding a bit dodgy, the travel time and prices are pretty good for peak season.

    • +1

nothing dodgy about it. Can't believe anyone would give it a -ve.

It's very cheap & good airline & don't think it has ever been cheaper in past 10 years, except at start of GFC.

  • our free gloves arrived today. Think I forgot to mention in original post, that you get a free pair of top end ski gloves with every air ticket purchased. We got a Ripcurl pair with RRP$99 on them, a Kombi pair $149 & 2 Scott USA $129 each. Apparently they are last seasons, but gloves don't change much year to year.

I did ask, if we can have anything off if we didn't take the gloves. It seems they did a deal on the gloves & they didn't cost them anything like RRP, but who cares. Always handy to have a spare pair of gloves when skiing.

  • just saw this on ebay – $1399 is ridiculously low.

RED HOT airfare to USA west coast-depart from 29Dec to 5Jan, back 21Jan OR later

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RED-HOT-airfare-to-USA-west-coast…

Paid $1599 last week, for same thing & thought that was fantastic.

Contacted them this morning & they only have 1 fare at $1399, more at $1499.
