  • Does this grow and harvest rice as well? What does a $170 rice cooker have over a $50 rice cooker?

    • +6

Can't comment on this particular model, but there is a difference in end result between rice cookers. You might be happy with the end result of a $30, even $50 one, and if so stick with it, but there is always room for improvement.

You're probably right - I'm no rice connoisseur. The rice from my $12 rice cooker is good enough for me.

    • Well it is a $300 dollar rice cooker RRP haha

Fuzzy logic etc heaps cook rice nicer.. details http://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/household/kitchen-appli…

Some rice cookers are sealed really well so they can hold the rice for longer without the rice drying out.
To the average person it doesn't really matter But if you eat rice regularly then it's worth spending the extra money

Shouldn't really be leaving rice in the cooker long enough for it to dry out (even in an open rice cooker). It goes all ganky pretty quickly in the sealed ones.

These will cook rice quicker then an open rice cooker. Girlfriend's Asian and says they all do the same thing. Can't say I've noticed the difference between these (we had one when in Thailand) and the open /cheaper one we have now. It all comes down to getting the right amount of water for the rice you have and that makes a huge difference..all rice aint' the same.

You can leave rice in there for 2-3 days and it's still edible.
We had a cheap rice cooker that would start going dry by the next morning if we made it for dinner.
We switched to a more expensive cookerr like this one and it would last nearly 4 days but usually we would freeze it if it didn't get eaten within 3.

We make perfect rice every time because we have a rice dispenser at home. So we have consistent water to rice ratio so its very easy for me to tell the difference with the rice cookers if we change.

          rice dispenser

          Care to elaborate more?

Ours is a different model but does the same thing.
Every time you get the same amount of rice.

      • in your logic, the people who "eat rice regularly" are NOT the average persons?

        • I would say not. We eat rice 5-6 days each week, that's what I would call regular.

        • +1

          Correct.
I don't know any Aussie mates that eat rice regularly but my mum who is Japanese eats rice every day.
Guess I should say the average Aussie haha.

    • +1

The people who would buy this, probably aren't cooking the $10 5kg bag crap in it.

      • +1

We use an earlier version and with decent rice, it's great. Well worth the cost up front.

      • Hahaha
        So true.
We buy the 20kg bags of rice

  • -3

does it have wifi or bluetooth? No? Then what use is it?

  • -4

does it come with a free Voss water?

edit - I read somewhere that the rice tastes really good, when you cook it in one of these panasonic cookers and use voss instead of regular tap water.

  • I have the white Panasonic SR-ZE105WSTM 1 litre model, got it for around $100, this is the stainless steel silver model and has 3 more cooking modes or functions.

Seems rather expensive for just being silver.

anyone know why the price difference?

    • I think 1.5mm pan vs 3/3.5mm is the main thing

      • thanks, that would add to the cost

  • About three years ago I bought one of the $12 jobs from Kmart to see if I would use a rice cooker much, before I bought a good one. It's still going strong and probably gets used twice a week.

    • +1

But compare to that households that consume rice daily, and it will probably fall apart pretty quick.

That said, for anyone with a cheap rice cooker, you can turn it into a steamer.

      • I'm sure it would. It was just one of those surprise cheap things that just wont break. Probably not recommended for serious rice eaters.

      • +1

The $12 one won't fall apart, but basically you are eating the Teflon after a few months.

  • How durable is the inner pan? Those $10 - $50 rice cookers pans teflon coating goes away in a couple of months.

  • Does anyone know if this rice cooker is made in Japan or elsewhere?

  • +1

Already have a TIGER rice cooker else I would buy this in a flash. Excellent price

  • Thanks, I'll give it a try.

  • 1 part rice, 2 parts water. In a saucepan. Cover with lid and bring to the boil. When boiling turn down to a simmer. Leave until water absorbed, then turn off heat.
