Yumi's Hommus Traditional Dip 1kg $7.00 at Woolworths

290

Looks like a price drop on this monster 1KG bucket of hommus/hummus = 0.70c/100gram compared to the smaller tubs you pay $2.00/100gram

@JV - yes, it looks to be the new regular "Low Price Always" but of course it wasn't *Always this low - it used to be $9.40, and its not available in Coles - so I think this is a bargain.

If 1kg is too much in one go (best in 5 days of opening) you can put in smaller container/s and freeze. (I top with some olive oil before freezing as suggested to help maintain it during freezing/thawing) - Still pretty good after it's thawed. (may need a stir if it separates)

don't even like hommus but +1 for sticking it to jv before posting

Don't like hummus!? Whats the matter with ya? One of the great foodstuffs the Lebanese, I mean Israeli's, I mean Syrians, Turks, et al, have brought into the country!

Actually, some hummus is pretty bad. This one is ok, but I prefer the Chris's one. I think both suffer due to Canola oil. I've kept one of these 1Kg tubs going for a week and it was fine. I reckon if you repotted it into smaller tubs it'd be ok without freezing, particularly covered with oil.

  • My local Coles has sold $7 1kg Yumi hommus tubs for at least the last 6 months.

The local Woolies, on the other hand, sells this generic "Willow Farm" brand 1kg tub for only $6
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/Search/Products?searchTer…

Having tried both I prefer Yumi's, but it's hard to beat $6 for a kilo of dip.

Ok cool. I've never seen it at my Coles, so apologies.
I've found it on Coles online at $9.39 - notwithstanding online and in store price can be different.

Haven't tried that Willow Farm 1KG for $6. Will look for it next time.

      • +1

Willow Farm 1KG isn't that great at all. Stick to Yumi's!

  • It is available at Coles, actually. I've seen it on sale too.

    Good idea with freezing it.

    • Good idea with freezing it.

freezing it will change the texture and it wont taste anywhere near as good…

Chris's is way better if you have to buy commercial.

    • +6

      Chris's is way better

tastes way better if you make your own…

      • Costs more to make your own, including time?

        • +3

Costs more to make your own

          No way…

          including time?

takes about 2-3 minutes in the blender vs 20-30 mins to go to Coles…

        • @jv: Thanks.

      • +2

Yes, home made is so much better. For a real killer hummus, roast the garlic before you put it in.

Aldi was selling 1kg hummus for $5 something a month ago.

Note that this product contains fish…

and its not available in Coles

    yes it is…

    • +1

      Ok thanks.

RE contains fish - I think that's a "may contain.. processed in same facility as…" warning. It's not an actual ingredient.

      • I think that's a "may contain..

Nope, it clearly says it contains fish. Read it…

        • +1

I'm looking at the actual product and it reads:

          Allergen Advice Contains Sesame seed
May be present Egg, Fish, and Tree nuts

Consume within 5 days of opening.

          Thank you and come again.

@jv: That's how Coles is reporting it. I'm looking at the actual pack, not a link to a supermarket who may or may not have it correct. It is NOT an ingredient, but allergen advice - it MAY be present.

        • -4

          @danyool:

That's how Coles is reporting it.

That's where I normally shop. I don't buy direct from the supplier.

        • +1

@jv: Great point, as usual. I'm sure Coles change the composition pre-sale, yeah.

        • @Mic Cullen:

I'm sure Coles change the composition pre-sale

You could always contact them, but since you are sure, I guess that's not needed.

    • +3

i suspect it does not actually contain fish per se but rather is made on the same production line / equipment as their fish products - they have to put that in their allergen section…

I stand to be corrected but I suspect that is the issue

When it comes to dips, I like to get hommusexual :)

  • I find Yumi hommus not so yummy.

  • +1

Ah good. I've been getting it at coles for a while now, but there is a woolies closer to me so I'll start going there now. The willow farm hommus is inferior.

    $6.39 at Costco (membership required).
Ignore the use within 5 days nonsense. A tub lasts six weeks in the fridge easily. There's nothing in it like dairy that will go off quickly.

  • +4

Honestly guys just make your own hummus. Its like 4 ingredients and it taste 100 times better then the best one you can buy.

    • +2

      ^ this…

    • taste 100 times better

That's a big call!! I do make my own sometimes, and it probably does taste better, but don't always have the time, esp clean up when you have to carefully scrape the sides of the blender so as not to waste any. :)

    • Agreed I make it sometimes but as a staple in the fridge you can't go past Yumi's!

    Jamie's Basic houmous recipe

    Serves 6-8 as a starter

2 x 400g cans of chickpeas (reserve the liquid and a few chickpeas for decoration)
    4 tsp tahini
    2 garlic cloves, crushed
    1 tsp crushed sea salt
6 tbsp quality extra virgin olive oil (plus extra for drizzling)
3½ tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
    Paprika (optional)
    Coriander or parsley leaves (optional)
Rinse the chickpeas in cold water and tip into the food processor. Add the tahini, crushed garlic, salt, lemon juice and seven tablespoons of the reserved liquid from the cans. Turn on the food processor and slowly pour in the oil while it runs.

When the mixture is fully combined and smooth, tip it into a serving dish. Drizzle with some more extra virgin olive oil and decorate with a few whole chickpeas. Sprinkle with paprika and finely chopped coriander or parsley leaves, for colour. Source: http://www.jamieoliver.com/news-and-features/features/best-b…

PSA. Yumis is one of the few brands that doesnt seem to add sugar to its hummus. A much lower carb content than pretty much all the other brands on the market.

Coles' hummus - best for texture, minimum oil and price.

  • I buy this every week at Woolworths. Family loves it. The price dropped a week or two ago.

Saw it at costco for $4-6 dollars a while ago(not sure if its still there at that price). was pissed off paying the WW price, but at least this price cut makes it a bit easier.

That being said, even at the old price it was still worth it.

    • When Woolworths first started stocking it, it was around $8 and I'd buy it occasionally, but then price went up, and I've never seen it on special, so thought this was a good price now.

  • It's been $7 at Coles. It's $6 at Costco. Woolworths put the price up recently to $9 then down to $7.
