X-Rite i1Display Pro

Most highly regarded prosumer display calibrator.

This is a historic low price by $10USD and $20-30USD below typical sale price. B&H (who are extremely dodgy) once had it cheaper by $10AUD. Here, Amazon is the seller. So buy buy buy!

Now the only question is what will I do with this when I upgrade my screen to a curved one? :/

  • FYI there are cheaper options available. Generally the hardware is the same if it's in the same series and by the same manufacturer. Hardware varies between manufacturers.

For example, there are plenty of people using colormunki with ArgyllCMS https://displaycal.net/ - but keep in mind the i1Display Pro is only $34USD more.
Also, the Spyder5's - all the Spyder 5's have the same hardware (but different to X-rite's) however the manufacturer software is gimped on the cheaper versions. You'll need at least the pro unless using ArgyllCMS.

Spyder5 Pro's can be a lot cheaper (as low as $134AUD recently) but be aware that they are considered the lesser sibling compared to X-Rite.

+ve for the price/product, intrigued by the BH comment, in my experience BH has been pretty good

    • Yeah, same. I've never bought anything from them personally but I've only ever heard good things.

    • B&H are fine until you have a warranty problem, according to Google iirc.

Or in my case, until you need the serial number on the invoice to match the serial number on the goods.

      • Have to admit tha I have never dealt with warranties with BH goods….I have a bit of a policy of assuming no warranty on stuff I import.

    • Same. I've bought HD's, a couple lenses and SD cards over many years. Never had a need to test the warranty side of things, though.

  • Got one last time bh had them on sale. Good little unit. I upgraded from the spyder3.

    • Why would you need to upgrade? I would have thought these things get purchased, used a couple of times, and then spend the rest of the time on a shelf collecting dust.

I calibrate at least once a month if not more. The software on the spyder hadnt been upgraded in years.

If you want true output then you recalibrate often an monitors will get worse overtime.

        • Seriously? LED monitors degrade that much that recal'ing monthly is desirable?

        • Surely you don't re calibrate the same screens on a monthly basis?

What displays need calibrating every month? Genuinely curious

  • Does this colorimeter calibrate TVs or does it only do monitors?

    • Any screen you can connect a computer to. (Projectors, not really)
