Need to put a price in the title ($169.99 delivered).

Also there are only 8 available, the post might be removed for not having enough stock.

    • +1

there is lots of stock, the store has all types and sizes, not just the 5 litre you mentioned.
      I see a 1.5l one, its $60 plus $15 postage.

don't worry… looking at the Rep history, I don't think it will make a diff.

        • +3

hmm, I see that 1.5l one I mentioned is always 40% off at $60, and last post they said post is always free, now its $15.

True. 2 of the previous 3 posts were unpublished for sockpuppeting.

Check ebay they seem to be cheaper

  • What an odd thing to buy.

    • Depends on if you like port, or aging your own spirits. Definitely make sure it's not varnished, though.

      • I imagine these manufactured-from-scratch versions have an internal bladder, as opposed to one made by a cooper from previously used barrels, otherwise the fresh wood / adhesive / varnish will taint whatever you put in it.

        • +1

This barrel is manufactured from new oak wood not used barrel. Ideal for ageing to get full oak flavour. Does not contain wax, varnish or any adhesive and no bladder inside.

        • @microame: where does the oak wood originate from please.

        • This barrel is made out of European Oak. We do have barrels made out of French Oak as well.

Made out of European oak… we have french as well….

Not all European Oak is French.

        • @llama:

But all French oak is European

  • Offtopc but does anyone know where to get normal sized wine barrels? In Sydney just wanted to use them as tables at parties

Website indicates that barrels are made from new oak. You will end up with very oaked port/muscat/sherry which is not good. You are better off getting a barrel made from old wine/whisky barrels direct from a cooper.

The barrels made out of used barrels will get the flavour of sherry or port which was in the barrel before. The whole idea of the barrel is getting the oak flavour. If you need sherry flavour you can add some sherry straight to the bottle you don't need a barrel.

About getting very oaked, depends upon how long you keep the item in the barrel. Usually people drink from the barrel and don't store it for long.

  • This is a lovely deal dear!

  • Keep your barrel moist inside, all year.

    • -1

Yep - you must keep the barrel full at all times. Otherwise the wood shrinks and the staves leak.

For example if you were aging port, you would draw off (say) 5 litres and replace that immediately with 5 litres of lower grade port stock.

      • Sounds like an almighty f**k around just to keep booze in a barrel.

        • -1

          Not really.

You buy the cheapest topup you can find, for example 4 Litre Cask or 2 litre goonies of port. The barrel and aged stock turns the cheap crap into good stuff quite quickly.

You don't "drink from the barrel". You draw off whatever you plan to drink soon and bottle it.
