I think it is not illegal but potentially inviting trouble for the site.

      • Do you work there?

        • +2

Nop and my negative opinion here is not even driven by morality like most other guys, but purely pragmatism.

        • @truetypezk: fine mate each to their own.

  • +2

I wonder why none of the mods have commented so far?

    • +1

Probably discussing amongst themselves before they comment.

      • +3

or they are trying to lock the price themselves, lol..

    • A mod has revised the post effectively allowing post like this to be considered deals.

  • I can't get it work on Android 7

  • -5

    Fraudulent

  • i didn't know Watanobbi is a real place!

  • -6

I don't agree with this either. Its too close to stealing for me.

    • +7

Tbh, petrol companies are bigger thieves than robbers. Just recently, the price of crude was halved, but the prices remained large, only dropping by a fraction.

      • So are you saying that it is alright to shoplift to "hurt" the corporate giants? I am sure coles and wws will just have their profit margin cut by a tiny fraction if you "forget" to scan something at the self checkout every time.
Another analogy. You will up 10L and pay for it, then go out the door and fill up another 2L and drive away. How is that different?
So yeah it is still wrong to steal from thieves.

        • +2

No, two wrongs don't make a right in this case.
Im just pointing out that they shouldn't be so expensive in the first place.

        • @ATangk: http://imgur.com/3qFdZiu

Might be racist. But its part of Aus history prior to the end of the White Aus Policy, a politician actually said it. No offence meant.

        • @truetypezk Do you dl movies, TV, music, any of it? Have you ever?

        • @Tuba:
I do. As I have mentioned earlier I am against this purely due to the possible legal repercussions but not moral values.
That said, I also believe downloading pirated content and doing what OP states here is morally wrong, but I don't like to impose my moral values on other people.

        • @truetypezk: Take music for example. We are captive audiences. We can of course not go, or listen, or watch etc. But its not realistic in the scheme of things and the makers of such make huge amounts of money as a result. Market sets the price is not entirely true, or reliable as a setter of proper price.

Torrents for example, have forced them to come up with new ways to market, and price. Its somewhat unlocking the cage of a captive audience.

Sadly, this effects 7 11 more than others but it could force fuel companies to lower prices to compete. I dont know of a single poor fuel company. Franchisees is different but my understanding is they dont make money off the fuel, they make it from the store and fuel makes people stop. 7 11 corporate itself is responsible for the fuel aspect of the business. Not sure how true this is.

    • +2

This idea for matching fuel price was given by their app itself so how is it stealing?

    • I assume the votes system on comments works the way it does to avoid trolling and untrue information. But it seams unfair that my opinion (negative vote) no longer counts because too many people don't agree with a comment which was only stating my personal opinion.

No Negative votes for this deal survive this system, therefor the positive vs negative votes for a deal are useless.

  • -6

Pretty sure its theft. Its not even a loop hole in the app, you are actually trying to break it with other tools/apps. That's intentional theft.

    • -3

Seriously, yes to a degree it is theft, people have a short memory though, how many 1000's of staff members did 7-11 rip off by under paying them??.. now that was intentional theft

      • +5

haha.. and you are going to pay them by saving on fuel here?
Are we being the Robinhood here?
Whatever they did, it's no reason for us to behave like thieves here.

Am sure concerned authorities have been dealing with them on this or any other frauds they have committed.

        • I am just pointing out the fact that everyone cries foul here that its theft - which I do not disagree with you - it is theft. Just pointing out that 7-11 aren't innocent and themselves have ripped off 1000's of its own staff by underpaying them. In my opinion this is karma, just biting them back in the ass.

        • +1

@DanielR: OzBargainers haven't condone their thefts either, and many have boycotted them, even their $1 Coffees and $2 Sandwiches

      • You sir, need to understand the meaning of rule of law. It is not your job to punish the villains here.

  • +15

Could we compare this to VPN? Where you bypass region blocks by pretending to be in a region to get cheaper/better value products -eg. games/Netflix.

    • I'm not sure. It feels different, but I am not sure exactly why…something to do with the idea that IP is designed to work that way and its the corp who is misusing it as a geocode, but with this you are the one doing the misuse.

  • -6

Clearly violating terms & conditions to receive a discount is not a deal. This opens a whole can of worms.

    • +11

Heaps of deals posted here do precisely that.

      • VPN to another location when the Ts & Cs state you must be a resident of that location?
      • Pricing error?
      • Family and friends discount code posted here? (you even voted for this one and this one, I dunno maybe you were legit friends and family)
      • Opening a new account to get a signup bonus, when you already have an account?

the list goes on. This I see personally as a bit of a stretch and I wont be doing it, but I wont be +/- the deal either

    • +1

Agreed. Why not post a deal saying you can get cherries for the price of carrots at the Woolworths self check out? That's a hack too…

  • +5

How is it legal for 7-11 to have such huge variations in the fuel prices in one state ?
That should be reported to ACCC, not this hack

This hack just makes it easier to "standardize" the pricing.
Mr Robot are you watching ?

    • +5

I think that's called competition and free market.
You want a state-dictated price? Move to China please.
They vary price because different pumps are competing with each other until a point that they can't lower price further to stay in business.

      • exactly and their app goes a step further that authorizes even lower prices for fuel purchase.

  • +2

This is clearly a glitch in the 7-11 app where it's using a local cached location of the device rather than fetching a new location for the price before locking the price - they have implemented mock location protection which is good, would be great to see the quality of the the app go up and for this to be fixed.

Would hate to see use of this hurt the ozbargain community, I'd steer clear myself, in the interests of supporting the local franchisee, and, I'm sure not all of them are bad!

  • -6

    it's stealing guys

    • who is?

    • +2

The bigger problem is the fact admins of this site have chosen to keep this active for 3+ hours without acting to remove it.

I don't like 7-11 because of how they treat their employees will never shop from them, but keeping such a post active is wrong.

      • +2

and making things worse silently endorsing the "deal" by editing it.

        • And even worse again, all dissenting opinions are being quashed by the voting system so it looks like the deal only has positive votes.

    • +5

      it's stealing guys

      It's raining men

  • +16

For those who are complaining about the breach of T&C - how many Amex card do you have? Or rather, how many times you have purchased a gift card (unless the deal was specific to GC like Westfield GC) to utilise the Amex cash back offer?

    • +2

I know right. So ironic OzBargainers out of all people getting on their high horses 😂

      • +5

Watching Ozbargainer's take the moral high ground? "Priceless. There are some things in life money can't buy. For everything else, there's M̶a̶s̶t̶e̶r̶c̶a̶r̶d A̶m̶e̶x Ozbargain?"

  • +2

This is different than a bargain imo. I'm not downvoting but I don't agree either

  • +13

    I don't agree on the basis that is theft, as people are still paying for fuel just at a cheaper rate compared to a local store. If people are getting up in arms, heck we might aswell ban;

    • Clothing/electronic/other overseas online store posts where were told to switch to another currency to lower the price
    • VPN deals which allow you to circumvent geoblocked measures which allow you to purchase account passes
    • x % off, giftcard deals that reduce overall pricing
    • Wrong priced items
    • Fuel companies themselves having varied prices in fuel, but stores have a standardised price
    • etc
    • +1

multiple accounts or new accounts for discounts/trials are usually against terms and conditions too. I don't see GPS spoofing as worse. Irony is root Android users can't get into the app.

    • their own app approves and locks a lower price so it is technically not a theft.

Price beating another store should be classified as theft as well if this was a theft.

  • +13

Usually love a good hack. However this one, even if I love the delicious irony of 7/11 getting screwed, seems dodge to me personally. Such a grey line though, and I wouldn't presume to speak for anyone else. I wont be doing it, but i'm not going to +/- the deal either

On one hand, it's similar to using any other sneaky way around the Ts and Cs of an offer, much like a lot of other deals here. e.g. Opening multiple accounts to get a new user discount.

Yet this one feels a lot more involved and sneaky. Like exploiting a weak checkout process for an online store. e.g. changing the scripting of your browser to inject your own price for an item. Then completing the transaction at the price you've specified and having the store honour it automatically. Something I'd see as theft and wouldn't do.

Then again, is it any different to using a VPN to change your location?!?!? That's something I'd do in a heartbeat.
What about faking a price-match to get a store to accept a lower price?
What about making up some bullshit story when trying to negotiate a better price with store staff? I may have embellished a story or two.

    Morals, odd creatures they are.

    • +3

      ^this!

    • What about making up some bullshit story when trying to negotiate a better price with store staff

Like when Dr Schultz offers a ridiculous price (for Eskimo Joe) so they (Calvin Candie) are forced to consider the offer? And politely asks to buy the horse (Broomhilda) as well?
Then just buys the horse without buying the house?

    • I dont quite agree with this part of your analogy:
exploiting a weak checkout process for an online store. e.g. changing the scripting of your browser to inject your own price for an item. Then completing the transaction at the price you've specified and having the store honour it automatically.

It would be like the online store offering you different prices based on your postcode, and instead of being honest, or letting it autodetect it, you are typing in a different postcode because you know it will be cheaper.

      • +3

Fair enough. There are holes in all analogies :)

The reason why I see it a little more complicated than simply charging more based on postcode. And trust me, it seriously irks me to be defending a horrible company like 7/11. It's not exactly the same as a VPN or geo-dodging because you could argue the costs of a sale are pretty much the same.

There are a number of factors that go into setting price, MANY of them 7/11 trying to screw us out of as much as possible. In-fact probably most of them. such as incomes, positioning of stores, availability of competitors etc. All factored in to extract the maximum amount possible from us customers.

But there are some quite legitimate reasons why it might be more expensive in certain areas.

        • Fuel transport costs
        • Staff costs vary greatly around the country (when and if they're ever paid by 7/11 or 7/11 franchises)
        • Store Rent
        • store fitout and automation
        • buyer behaviour (can they price the fuel lower because people in certain areas spend more on other crap?)
        • State regulations and the cost of compliance etc
        • insurance premiums
        • some state specific taxes, e.g. payroll
        • how much a store sells, fixed costs are less per litre if they're doing big volume. reverse is true for low volume remote stores.

So there are some legitimate reasons why 7-11 would price differently, outside of just trying to screw us (which they're mostly trying to do when they're not screwing their own staff).

  • +2

It's just price-matching what happens to be the best price available across all 7-11 stores nationwide. Far from stealing.

It's a lot better than the mad rush of people trying to snap a wrongly priced items online, like a $4 printer, or $1.90 iron - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/price+error. I didn't see the same uproar to have the deal removed, or accusations of stealing in any of those deals….

    • +1

But it's different, because they were benefitting from those deals and are too lazy to do this.

    • very true pat_mac, well said. At the very least 7-11 was very successful in creating a marketing stir on ozbargain today and they are hoping for shell and caltex to pull up their socks with 8 cents discount they offer per litre of fuel.

Just tried testing this Hack to see what the fuss is about. Doesn't work. Wasted 30 mins. - El Grande

      Lol this guy.

      • -1

I wanted to report it. Offer a screenshot as proof. I can't do it unless I can get it to work.

        • Why don't you walk to Wattanobbi like the rest of us?
          It's not that far mate.

  • +3

We should have a competition for who can come up with the best worst excuse to alleviate cognitive dissonance.

Here goes my entry: "The fuel app in its current state rewards people can afford the luxury of medium and long-distance travel. Executing this hack highlights the plight of those less mobile in society."

(Negatives of this excuse: 7-Eleven would just change the app's design so that location can only be changed once every 3 months or so per credit card-linked account).

    • not necessarily a luxury especially when considering longer commutes increases unhappiness, health risks, marital and family issues.

Clever quip though. Although the statement already applies sans ""hack"".

    • +2

How about this community is generously donating its premium skills towards free beta testing.
How about we put in a wage claim :-) i'd give you a chance to actially get it paid if you phrased it right with their current problem.

    • Circle of life.

What if my local 7-11 was on a desert island?

I didn't get to the top of the bargain chain to pay extra.

      Etc.

  • Not working on LG G4, mock location error keeps coming up no matter how many times I close both apps….

    • Finally got it to work on my LG G4 after many open closes of both apps. Not sure if there is a set sequence that works for all phones…seems random. Anyway, hoping they don't see a sudden spike of people "visiting" Watanobbi and ban us from the app!

      • What did you do to finally get it to work? I'm still encountering issues..

        • Just kept opening and closing both apps. But I noticed there was a 7-11 app update today so maybe they have closed the loophole? I haven't tried it since the update….

  • It's not much of a hack if at all. It's enabling a hidden setting on Android and using a legitimate alternative app to set another location.

711 know about the rather simple flaw and already try to prevent it ineffectively. Root access on the other hand is already blocked though. It's their own risk to offer the service either knowing the basic flaw is still there or having not even done simple testing to know about it. Acknowledging the issue they should either find a fix to prevent the flaw, withdraw the deal or use other preventative methods such as banning detected spoofing.

Well iOS requires jailbreaking so is a bit of a hack. But still it's pretty standard fare to expect an exploit if it's relatively simple and only breaks terms and conditions.

  • It's not that dodge, 7-11 can simply limit the voucher to only work in a specific postcode.

  • Just tried testing this Hack to see what the fuss is about. Doesn't work. Wasted 30 mins.

    • Need to be on Android 6.0 or above, and use the app linked here, not from Playstore. Then keep opening and closing both apps fully, it eventually worked for me after initial frustration ;)

  • +1

If you are reading this post, it means that you are a regular user of the 7/11 App and benefits from the discounted petrol. Why is there a need to cheat (Yes you are cheating) ? 7/11 was good enough to to give us discounts. If this cheating becomes widespread, they might stop this promo and even the honest users will suffer.

I request the OP to remove this post. Let us not take advantage of the generosity of 7/11 for this promo (even though I am sure it brings them more business).

    • Though I don't have an android device neither I use 7/11. But I don't see any generosity here. It's just looting with one hand and giving a little with the other.

      • loot franchisee' employees to.. give back to customers?

        • Yes, you got it right.

    • Generosity of an unethical multinational giant who has exploited Indian workers in thei franchised stores nationwide, turning a blind eye to shocking underpayment allegations

    • Sorry I don't agree. I reckon this is how the app should work all the time, that is give you the cheapest 7-11 price regardless of where you live. Why should I pay more for the same fuel than someone who lives in a different town?

  • +2

Essentially the same thing as using a VPN to get cheaper netflix or PC games.

But I can't figure out how to use the app on a rooted phone. I have the latest beta version of RootCloak and it still won't work. I have money on the app that I can't use.

    • I'm stuck in the same boat, I even have the system less root on my phone and it gets flagged because of xposed manager being present =/

  • Does this work with premium as well ?

    • Yes

  • Locked in my price on my iPhone, thanks to the OP and Wyong!

    • Are you Jailbroken? Did you use PMP?

    • more info please, anyway to use it on my non-jailbroken iPhone?

    • +1

      Jail broken and used LocationFaker.

      Did not use PMP.

      • Is that LocationFaker9 that costs $2.99?

        • Yes. But it's free via Bite-Your-Apple.

        • @pogichinoy: Is that a pirate repo?

        • @sween64:

Dunno, just found it on Google quite a long time ago.

  • +9

    thuglife

  • Hah. I never knew people filled up with petrol at 7-Eleven, the prices are always exaggerated and no discounts are ever given. They should take every single genuine AND FAKE tank-fill that comes their way courtesy of this post. As that means MORE people in their doors and potential for other miscellaneous sales.

  • +1

Costco sell 91 for 110 today while others selling for 124. save $8 per fill.
