FYI. These are not the latest model. The latest model is the iPad Air 2.
iPad Air was released in November 2013.

    • iPad air 2 is also not the fastest or latest. IPad pro 9.7 is…. if you consider pro 12.9 as different category.

      • The smaller Pro is replacing the standard iPad line. Meanwhile the Air 2 will probably be around for a few years, like the iPad 2 was.

    • iPad Pro 9.7 replaced the "iPad" line. The Air 2 is probably going to stick around like the iPad 2 did.

    • And even the Air 2 is getting pretty old, although Apple really smashed it out of the park with the Air 2 so there's been no need to refresh it.

  • Thanks OP, just picked mine up =)

  • +1

Relatively ancient tech with little storage. Not a bad buy if you just want an apple product but don't want to spend 700+ on the newer cellular models

  • +5

16gb though. Can't imagine how painful that would be.

    • At least Telstra have free Apple Music streaming.

  • +1

    always wanted to try ipad.
is there a big difference between air and air 2?

    • +7

      2

    • +3

RAM probably would be the biggest difference. That said performance difference isn't something to laugh at either. So I'd grab Air 2.

    • +2

The price obviously, but mainly air 2 has faster CPU, better graphics processor and more ram also the display seems to be better too.

    • +1

Air 2 and newer would allow you to run 2 apps side by side, the first gen Air can't do that due to RAM constraint.

  • +1

This or the Air 2 wifi for $398 @ HN (Amex)?

    • Air 2

      • Performance improvement while losing cellular capabilities is worth the $50?

        • Depends if you use the cellular feature or not.

        • I have used both cellular and wifi only, cellular very handy but requires a data plan instead now I use the wifi model and just use my phone as a wifi hotspot and link my phone to the iPad.

    • -2

      Amex excludes Apple Products

      • they have no way of knowing what you buy. Also excludes gift cards, but have bought those and works

  • +6

Sorry but the A7 chip paired with 1gb RAM is a dud.

    • Doesnt it work? My iPad 4 still works.

      • +3

The iPad 4 is fine because it's 32bit. The A7 was the first 64bit CPU and apps generally use more RAM. You'll find it struggling to keep more than 2-3 Safari tabs open in the background.

The Air 2 on the other hand is a completely different beast. I recommend getting that instead.

        • The only big killer here is that the 64-bit devices need support for the 32-bit architecture. This means you lose an extra 1 GB of space to the dyld cache. I don't see why the 64-bit devices need more RAM. 64-bit is capable of addressing more RAM but doesn't necessitate more as a rule of thumb.

  • +10

Just be aware, iPad Air is now pretty old and comparatively slow with new tech so weigh up the costs/benefits before buying. I'm used to my iPad pro, and when i pick up my wifes Air it drives me up the wall as it's so slow to do anything. Air2 has twice the RAM and faster cpu and would be the min spec i'd consider these days.

  • +1

$350 for a slow 4 year old tablet? lol.

    • +1

You have to understand that by apple pricing standards it's bargain of the year.

  • Was thinking meh til I realised it was cellular; great price.

  • I brought this AND the Air 2 from HVN. Guess I will give one to my folks, and my old one to my kids.

  • my girlfriend got one of these from Officeworks Underwood yesterday. They were saying it was an unwanted return

    • They told me Apple wanted to clear old stock and raise their share Price without permanently reducing iPad prices.

  • What's the best place to buy an ipad mini 4 cellular? Possibly 32-64 gb.

    • I'd probably wait 3 months time to see whether Apple release new iPad mini model (which in my opinion is more than likely).
That'd probably drag the price down heaps.

If you need it now, second hand? I do think Mini 4 is overpriced right now, their spec don't warrant their price. They are expensive because iPad mini didn't have a new model this year.

      • Apple refurbished product. These usually come in a plain box, so not so good from a present perspective. Do not get the 16 Gb version, you will fill it up in no time.
        http://www.apple.com/au/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad/i…

They are a really good devices, I have a 128 Gb version and the screen is crisp, the finger print reader is actually useful and they are fast. I do agree they are a tad OTT price wise, but I use it many times a day so it is good bang for buck for me.

        • +1

Frankly I personally see Air 2 as a better bang for the buck model. Air 2 would perform better (A8X vs A8) and they are cheaper. I personally think Air 2's price is low because of iPad Pro 9.7. That's why I don't see Mini 4 warrant its price. Not saying it's a bad model, it's price point is bit high, even for an iPad (see Air 2).

So I'd recommend waiting for Mini 5 to be released so that Mini 4 becomes cheaper if you need a Mini line. It's likely to be released on March next year, as Mini 4 is over one years old already (September 2015 was its release date).

        • @Oversimplified: It depends on what you are after. The Mini 4 suits me better than the Air 2 as it fits nicely in my bumbag, so I can easily take it with me. As you have indicated the Mini 5 is overdue, but it will be interesting to see when/if it is released as there has been considerable discussion on the future of the iPads. The rumour is a March release date for all the new iPads, so it depends on if you want to wait to see what is around. BTW the Air 2s release date was October 22, 2014.

This is a good site to do a comparison.

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad

        • @try2bhelpful: iPad Air 2 has a very decent chip in it though. A8X is more comparable to A9 for performance, whereas A8 is A8. A8X is something that is made for tablets, and therefore they took advantages of the leeways for heat dissipation and battery size.

I do own an iPad Mini 4 myself and I do agree it's a decent model. It's pricey for what it is though.

I do agree that I am comparing different category tablets as size difference can be a big factor in your purchase. That said, you have a 10 inch model that will perform better than the 8 inch model, and it's also cheaper. I don't think I am being unfair here when I say the value offered by 8 inch model is not that great.

Air 2's price is driven down by the fact that they've released a new model (Apple reduces price of their older devices), they are likely going to release a new model for iPad mini. Therefore I think waiting is better.

You are talking about refurbished unit from Apple, but those get subjected to similiar price adjustments from Apple if my memory serves me correctly.

        • @Oversimplified: Don't necessarily disagree on your bang for buck analysis, just pointing out why I chose the Mini4, over the Air 2 and would probably still make the same choice as the smaller size suits me better. However, if I was going to buy a 10 inch I would go the whole hog and buy the Pro. The ios will support it longer and it is a significant step up.

        • @try2bhelpful: Eh probably. As I said, I do own an iPad mini 4 despite all that, since I made similiar decisions on size.

Pro 9.7 vs Air 2… I don't know what Apple will do with Air 2. I honestly don't is my answer. iPad Air 2 has 2GB RAM as well, which in my opinion seperates a lot of old devices from the new, i.e. 6s, Mini 4, Air 2 from older devices. I can't imagine what'd seperate Air 2 and Pro 9.7 other than raw performance.

        • @Oversimplified: I only tend to buy when I see a signifcant step up in what I want which is why I still have my iPhone 6 plus (up from an iPhone 4) and went from a mini2 to a mini4; prior to that I had an iPad 2. I'm not a fan girl as such, I was intending to get an Android phone this year to try it out - you guessed it I hang out waiting for a Note7.

        • @try2bhelpful: I didn't think you were one? I probably am being too nerdy with the analysis a little. That tech nerd in me looks at the chip and gawks at different chips for what they are. The chances are, Apple will do whatever they want to do with the updates.

        • @try2bhelpful:

Was the step up from mini 2 to mini 4 worth it? I'm contemplating upgrading from the mini 2 which has been pretty great

        • @Oversimplified: Only real differences on the Pro is the smart connector, true tone screen, updated camera with flash (so those iPad photogs can do their thing at night), support for Apple Pencil and the additional speakers.

Only features of interest IMO are pencil support and speakers, the speakers are great. The smart connector is okay – keyboard case is not worth it, Logitech's one is a bit better. The true tone display doesn't really seem impressive, seems like something that could be achieved by altering gamma and getting the environmental lighting from the front camera. Not sure why they opted for an additional light sensor for a feature that isn't anything special. Probably so they could add another "new feature", which should have been on other devices.

        • @no not me: I'd assume the additional sensor stuff is probably for the battery life, it I think updated very frequently (not sure whether it was real time or not). I do think it's a cool feature. The camera stuff is kinda mixed bag imo (not because it's not impressive, but because they made it pertrude outward). One of my friend didn't like that decision much because he doesn't like using cases.

I personally think they should've used 4GB RAM on iPad Pro 9.7 to set Pro lines far from other lines, but I'd be digressing a little there.

I don't know, I do think A9X is very impressive. I guess the problem with just that is, better performance is kinda expected of the next gen devices.

        • @Oversimplified: I picked up an iPad Pro 128GB about a month and a half ago from Costco, I think it was about $40 less than Apple's education pricing.

The protruding camera sucks, worse they reversed the polarity on the magnets so iPad Air 2 cases don't magnetise, thus don't lock/unlock the device. Also, there is no longer "smart cases" there is now smart covers (front, magnetic) and silicone cases (back). Each are pricey as usual. What really irks me is the smart keyboard is also magnetic. It sucks because if you buy the smart cover, install it and pickup the device from the cover, it may detach in mid-air, sending the iPad plummeting to the ground.

I didn't consider the battery aspect, but you're probably right. People get up in arms about battery life. As a developer, it absolutely drives me crazy. Especially when it's totally untrue. Like, I will develop a DLL/dylib for jailbroken iOS and people will say "X causes battery drain". The reality is, it's a support library, it gets loaded once, provides a certain widget that is present in the Settings application and therefore can't cause battery drain. It's just impossible, especially when they aren't even saying it occurs in the Settings app.

2GB of RAM was the biggest disappointment for me. If it had 4GB, the device would be pretty future proof, still, I can run a lot of stuff with 2GB. I actually ran a test using SpriteKit and had the show physics body option enabled (it causes bad memory leaks). I was able to pull 1.5GB of RAM before the app was terminated, so the OS + some apps only needed 500MB, which is damn well impressive.

The speakers are great though, better than most laptops. Apple Pencil also is pretty good, if you're into art and note taking, which I do a bit of (with a lot of the latter). It's great being able to annotate all my PDFs for uni instead of dropping up to $10 a week on printing – which I don't do because of cost and the inconvenience of carrying tonnes of papers and storing them. Summarising notes in Word also makes reviewing more difficult. Notability and OneNote are great for this. Notability allows recording lecture while writing, so you can replay and listen and watch your notes appear, it's pretty great. The pencil is also a capable tool for shading and digital art, where the Surface lacks since it's really just a stylus with pressure and doesn't offer shading angles and whatnot. Cintiq isn't really viable for notes – cost and battery life and weight. I know the Apple Pencil gets a lot of crap but its pretty impressive and saves me money.

          Sorry about the longwinded reply.

        • @no not me: Eh I do longwinded replies all the time.

Yeah, I don't like the smart covers that much as well. I did buy one because when I bought the iPad, I also got a silicon case as well (both second hand). They are expensive and you can't use most of other cases with them (like silicon jelly case that covers the body). Though, when I kinda want that portability, just having the cover without the case is very nice.

2GB RAM doesn't bother me that much, but the fact that it's their "Pro" line irks me. Same amount of RAM for a device you advertise as "Pro" line, I dunno. I think they should've stuck with 4GB for Pro line, because it's "Pro" line that supposedly can replace your laptop (according to Apple at least). At least, I think they should've made it a shrunk down version of iPad Pro 12.9. The device is better with some things (like the true tone display) but not in others (RAM, USB 2 vs 3 speed etc).

As with stylus and tablet, I do have Surface Pro 3, so I kinda agree with the benefits a lot. I was thinking of replacing Surface Pro 3 with something lighter, with better pen and something with longer battery life, but… I frankly didn't like any of the options available in the market. Felt like I am circling around or not getting enough to justify the price I will have to pay. Not saying Apple Pencil is bad or anything like that of course, I do think it's nice. It's just that there are irks that puts me off the Apple Pencil.

To be honest, the best pen experience I had was with Surface Pro 1 despite its flaws (before MS replaced it with Surface Pro 3 for me, because mine had hardware issues and they ran out of SP1 to refurbish it with).

        • +1

@Advv: I got more memory and it is faster. The clincher for me was the fingerprint reader. Much nicer than having to put the code in all the time to open it. The man ended up with my old Mini2 - which had 64 GB and his old Mini1 went to my nephew. The beauty of Apple stuff is they are still worth passing on, even when they have gone out of date. If I wasn't passing it on I might've contemplated keeping the Mini2 and waiting for next March to see what is released then.

        • @try2bhelpful:

Thanks think I'll pick up a 4 instead

      • Unfortunately I need it now… well within 2 weeks

        • There there. I'd probably look into second hand market more if I were you/look into 20% eBay kinda things.

As I said, I don't see them to be a bad model, it's just that timing isn't that great right now (newest model not exactly newest spect).

        • @Oversimplified:

thanks mate. Does ebay normally offer 20% off at, or straight after Boxing day?
          cheers!

        • @Oversimplified: You always have to be careful with 2nd hand Apple goods. If you look at Whirlpool forums people have been stung where the iPad is not cleaned out properly by the person selling it, either 'cause it is stolen, they are going for insurance scam, etc and it is bricked. I would also be a little wary of eBay as they are probably grey market imports - you will get the 1 year warranty but probably not the 2 year statutory warranty. it is still worth looking at the refurbished as they are discounted and they are from Apple.

        • @try2bhelpful: Yeah, you can check if a device is iCloud locked online. Buying from Apple is good when there is a good price, they'll usually cover for even longer than 2 years if you've bought it from them directly. I had a MacBook break down after life 26 months and they replaced it free of charge (also gave me 2 year logic board warranty, so I'm covered for more than 4 years total on the main components in the MacBook). Really great support.
