I got this same deal exactly for free when I was in the US in September. Just googled Lyft vouchers :). I think they're a bit more expensive than Uber, but great deal for short rides!
I took a ride from Santa Monica to Irvine and it was a bit cheaper than Uber. But they're much of a muchness.
I had the $5 off deal (for free) and you're right, it was excellent for a short trip down to the shops or similar.
Couldn't use it when I was there in 2015. For some reason didn't accept non-us based credit cards
They did in Oct this year.
