Part of Computer Alliance's Boxing Day sale. This ASUS Zenbook UX310UA has been reduced to $695 delivered (cheapest according to staticICE). Specification:

  • Core i3-6100U
  • 4GB RAM
  • 128GB SSD
  • 13.3" Full HD
  • 2x USB 2, 1x USB 3, 1x USB Type C
  • Windows 10
  • 1.45kg

CPU is obviously the weak point here however even with a Skylake i3 it should be fast enough for browsing & document editing work. 4GB RAM is soldered on the motherboard but there's an expansion slot that supports up to 16GB. SSD can also be upgraded with M.2 card. TrustedReviews.

  • Very tempted, however I think I will pass due to CPU.

    • I'd actually pass it for the 4GB un-upgradeable RAM

      • Says it has ram expansion slot that can take 16GB. Im with Yamai. Cpu is just too slow.

For me. That too and touch screen.

The m.2 slot is good though

I'm surprised about the RAM slot, I read that it can't be upgraded.. this being an Ultrabook the ram would be soldered I guess

The real world difference between the i3 and the i5 is miniscule when using the default edge browser.. if running demanding programs like Photoshop the difference may be discernible

          @kamban:

          As per scotty's comment.

4GB RAM is soldered on the motherboard but there's an expansion slot that supports up to 16GB.

The 4GB is soldered but there is an extra RAM slot. Granted a lot of ultrabooks has the RAM soldered. In the manufacturers quest to get thinner and thinner laptops.

@kamban: This is what I got from ASUS' own product specification page

          Memory
4 GB DDR4 2133MHz SDRAM Onboard Memory, 1 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion, up to 16 GB SDRAM

        • @scotty: thank you guys, this makes the machine much more interesting

        • @xoom: that's very sensible of Asus

        • Well, it's $695. Why judge it like it's a 1k+ unit. Silly.

OK for browsing and editing , ideal for those that don't have a PC and use mainly the phone …… load office 365 and you are ready for that resume, tax returns and new job.

I was surprised how many people only have a smart phone and no PC.

sort of same market as macbook air, mobile light but not for power users.

but yeah, 4GB non upgradeable RAM ….. still OK for non power users.

    • but yeah, 4GB non upgradeable RAM

The RAM is expandable, up to 16GB, check some other comments and the link to Asus specs ^^

    • "was surprised how many people only have a smart phone and no PC."

That's why Apple concentrates so much on its iPhone. They acknowledged years ago that a smartphone may be someone's only computer.

The times they are a changing…

    Wont recommend this laptop.

Its quality is a total crap.

There are so many cases of broken hinge due to their cheap plastic material.

I have this laptop and yes, mine also has that broken hinge problem and cost $700 on asus centre to fix it out of warranty - 1 year 3 months

    • Should have argued that the expected lifetime of the hinge is longer than 1 year. Such a claim would likely be endorsed by the ACCC, note that the one year warranty is a minimum, not a maximum.

  • Slower processor in theory means better battery life.

Can't imagine too many people using this for photoshop or gaming. But if you're wanting to lug a notebook around that doesn't weigh a lot and get some mileage out of, this might be it.

Unless of course those hinges break…
