Received this offer on Telstra my account, look's like the code is not unique and can be used multiple times.

Just a heads up too, you can now watch Foxtel Play on any Telstra TV device and stream it in HD.

T&C:

  • New residential customers only. Just connect your compatible device to the internet. Shows only available if they’re in your pack, some shows/channels not available. Data charges may apply. Ongoing monthly fees apply after the free trial unless you cancel. Telstra TV offer ends 22nd February, 2017. Not to be used in conjunction with any other offer. During the trial you have access to all packs. Your ongoing fees will be based on whatever packs you select before the end of the free trial. Telstra TV device will also stream HD channels.

    • Totally forgot about that; Added to OP. Thanks!

    • What the hell. I don't know whether to be stoked that they actually know what HD streaming is (and run off to buy a Telstra TV), or pissed off that they don't offer it through the other streaming clients I've been using all this time. Because the Windows app is one of the worst streaming experiences on the planet.

This should apply to Foxtel Go as well as Play shouldn't it?

      • +1

Not too sure. But I read somewhere that HD streaming will be available on other devices early in 2017. So if that's true and you can wait, I'd just hold out for that.

Although I haven't tried foxtel go app or the foxtel play computer program so I'm not sure how the interfaces compare, but the app on the telstra TV box is actually really good.

I've convinced my parents to cancel their austar and get this. It'll work out cheaper for them as my mum only watches one station and my dad only watches the news. It'll cost them $10 a month, save a bunch.

        • Good stuff, thanks for the info.

  • Can confirm I received the same code and was able to sign up for the free month a few days ago.

Be aware you can only use one trial per device.

  • Even when it's a random alphanumeric code, it's not unique.
    Telstra & Foxtel never learn… :-p

  • we cant cast it to TV using Chromecast?

    • Nope and that sux can't cast Foxtel go either

    • -1

I can cast it using Windows on my laptop to my Sony Blu-Ray player then to the tv.

    • +1

Pretty much the sole reason I got rid of Foxtel Go.

That plus being forced to sit through adverts while paying $80 a month.

I honestly dont understand their business model - its almost designed to piss of the next generation of their customers.

  • Whats a telstra device ?

    • +1

It's a streaming box. Netflix, bigpond movies, Stan, presto which is being replaced by Foxtel Go

  • +14

Free is still too expensive for that quantity and quality of ads.

    • +1

      Ads ads and more ads

  • Thanks, I just bought a Telstra TV to give this a try.I was watching the cricket on 501 and it's a very decent picture, just a delay of 30 seconds or so. I'm considering ditching foxtel for play.

  • Using it now. Must say such a nice UI compared to what you get with the IQ boxes. Did notice that on my Samsung TV there is zero buffer yet on the telstra box there maybe 2sec worth. Not supported on LG 2016 TV's which is a shame. There anytime option is quite nice too. If the price was more reasonable Netflix will have a serious competitor

  • Thanks, signed up had the iq2 for free for three months and find Foxtel play on Telstra tv much better, more content and higher resolution.

May sign up for the $10 kids pack during the holidays. Pricing is improved and no contracts!!

    • Did you not have the HD add-on on the IQ2? The quality is terrible on IQ2 without it.

      • Yes had the hd add-on, however most of the on-demand shows were not in hd and generally feel the content looks better.

        • Thanks. Good to hear that Foxtel Play in HD is up to scratch.

    Ps4 compatible, right?

  • How do I watch in my browser?

    • +1

There's no browser version - the closest to that is a PC/Mac program

      • Cheers

  • Says code is invalid. Is it just me?

    • Try again. It said invalid the first time I tried but on the second time it worked.

  • Nice, works for me. Any way to deactivate in advance (but retain the month), or will I just have to kill the account at the end of the 1 Mo?

    • +2

You can deactivate right away and you will still have 1 months access.

Existing Go/Play users, can anyone comment on the stream quality difference when switching to HD on the Telstra TV?

Looks like I could cancel my sat box, get Play and a Telstra box, and get my F1 in HD for $20 less per month…

[edit] Missed this comment. More feedback welcome. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285023#comment-4316442

    • How do you get it for less than $20? One base pack + sports pack is $10 + $29 = $39 (although there's a tiny discount to $35 until end of January). Total rip-off.

      • +1

He's probably sharing it with a mate, $19.5 each.

        • Sneaky! And a good idea ;)

      • +2

How do you get it for less than $20?

He is talking about getting it for $20 less than his current satellite service:

"Looks like I could cancel my sat box, get Play and a Telstra box, and get my F1 in HD for $20 less per month…"

        • Good catch Kirt. My bad. Although I think he'd easily be able to negotiate base + sport for $40 on Foxtel if he's out of contract. That's pretty standard.

Still I'm glad I misread his statement as I hadn't considered the sharing option myself.

        • Correct :)

  • +1

Thanks OP, will get me through the NFL playoffs

  • Used my old credit card number with just a current date and it still worked, so it will get declined and I wont get charged after the one month.

  • Where do you actually enter this code ?

  • Sorry!
Hey there, it looks like this promotional code is invalid. You will not be able to sign up with this code.

    Any suggestions?

    • +1

It still works fine for me. Are you on Mobile or Desktop?

      • Finally I got it working…

It seems you need to fill in details as soon as we can. Otherwise I will get that message….

Also it's a shame that it won't accept Coles Reloadable Card - the website keeps saying it's a overseas CC…

        Thanks OP!

  • Can you cancel your subscription straight away so you don't get charged (if you forget)?

  • first time didn't accept code, did it again and went through :D

  • Whats the data usage like ?

Thinking about cancelling the current foxtel with 2 boxes, and upping the NBN plan.

  • GRRRHHH!!

So frustrating - I cancelled after trying it out.
My feedback on cancelling was "No Chromecast support. Desktop app crashes. Pricing model is crap."

    Deactivation Date:30 January, 2017

At least it gives you full trial even if you cancel early.

  • It's stupid you need to get another package before you can get the sports package. I'll stick to other online streams.

  • Do telstra charge for mobile data? Or is it unmetered like the AFL app?

  • It seems the content is not in Full HD…

I am using XBOX One S and my TPG ADSL could get ~11Mbps so I don't think it's an internet issue….

    • Live programmes are hd only on telstra tv at the moment.

      • Telstra TV seems working only under Telstra service…it's not a real deal for HD content I am afraid…

Can't afford the Telstra line as my Telstra DSLAM is congested at the moment…

        • The TTV works on any ISP…you can buy one brand new for $50 on Gumtree.

        • @kirt:
You are correct only difference is that if you are a Telstra broadband customer Foxtel is unmetered.
