D-Link DHP-P309AV Mini Powerline Adapter (Buy 1 Kit ($97), Get 1 Kit Free)

240

Hi guys,

Haven't seen this posted so I thought it may help others.

I bought a set of these ($97 at MSY currently so price match at the usual suspects for a bigger discount). Just requires you to send in proof of purchase etc and do the registration through the link listed. This brings them down to less than $50 per set which is a good price from the research I have done. Do what you like with the second set!

They're very handy as they seem to be one of the only ones that angle up from the base rather than hanging below the powerpoint. There are other adapters that are cheaper, but this is quite a handy feature hence why I have made this post.
This is handy if you have floor mounted power points and live in a rental property as I do.
Also really helpful if NBNCo placed your modem in a strange or inconvenient place as you can move your router anywhere in the house with these (dependent on wiring quality of course) without having to run unsightly ethernet cables everywhere.

Go easy on me and enjoy!

  • Just a word of warning, if your house is older than say 15 years, the speeds you receive with a device like this might not be ideal and hinder the whole connection speed of your "NBN".

    • I wouldn't say 15 years is the rule of thumb as my apartment was built in the bong filled haze of the early 70s and still manages full speeds, however yes end results may vary!

      • Yeah, my friend tried a pair of these in their house which is about 10 years old and struggled to get above 30Mbps from side to the other. I think if you have things that make a lot of electrical noise it affects these a lot.

    • The LAN port is only up to 100Mbps to begin with, so consider your speed hindered for those on proper connections.
Surge-protecting powerboards also render it useless.

Yeah, admittedly I only have a 25/5 speed like most Australians!

        • 25/5 speed like most Australians!

Hahahaha nope. You've got above average internet. That upload!

    • Yeah, our house is rather old and has multiple electrical renovations, and these don't work between a lot of the sockets because they seem to be on different 'loops' or something.

  • 'Tell em the price son' (in the heading that is)

  • Thanks OP. Do you have a list of participating retailers?

    • No I don't but as the promotion is run by D-Link, it would be any of their authorised sellers. Thus as long as you avoid random eBay stores and Gumtree, you should be relatively safe.

I guess it would apply at all the main stores so MSY, Harvey Norman etc. MSY's price is pretty good for the purpose of price-matching other closer retailers.

    Important bits.

    • Limited to 3 per person and 3 per household.
    • Excludes E-Bay (unless store is Verified Partner), Unauthorised E-Tailers and/or Service Providers.
    • Applicable to Authorised Retailers only.
    • Cannot be combined with any other offers.
    • Contact [email protected] to verify.
    • You must print the final step of the online redemption form, sign and attach the original barcode cut-out with a copy of proof of purchase.
    • If the original barcode or any other documents are missing, your claim will be rejected.
    • Thanks, was just about to add this in!

  • FYI if you don't need pass through the model without is is almost half the price. But then I dunno why you wouldn't just buy a tp-link instead anyway. Come in a two unit kit ready to go, and d-link make some horrid user interfaces for their network gear. TP-Link interface is basic, but at least what you need is there.

    • Oh I agree although these are auto connecting so no need to deal with the user interface.

Main reason I had for this particular type was that the NBN box sits above a single floor mounted powerpoint, and all other types like the TP-Link are oriented the wrong way to fit.

  • These things have 100Mbit LAN ports, so what is the point of the supposed 500Mbps speed between the units?
And having two of these is a bit pointless, because I am pretty sure that if you run two sets of them, they will interfere with one another and degrade the speed.

      1. Point is to bring network outlet without running cables
      2. AV500 is a protocol between the units, even most connections running NBN do fine, I get 96mbit / 39mbit on my AV200 version of these
      3. Running 2 sets doesn't cause interference, it adds additional outlets, its a homeplug network, you can add other brands if they are compliant
      4. I bought these for half the price recently, massive price hike on these
5 These offer power passthrough, good for limited power areas
500mbit means the combined throughput of the devices, I seem to get full NBN speeds on my units.

Very happy with the performance even in a house built in the 60's

      thank me later

      • Thanks mate,

I'm surprised about the speed on the AV200.

A lot of the material online is very confusing but it seems like most networking stuff, the theoretical speeds are just theoretically speaking, marketing.

    • Ethernet over UTP is much more efficient than Ethernet over Powerline. AV500 matches well with 100Mb/s Ethernet. See for example, http://www.trustedreviews.com/best-powerline-adapters_round-…

we expected this kit to deliver the ~10MB/s of other AV500 kits, but it could only muster up 5.2MB/s, which is actually worse than the AV200 Netgear Music Extender

      • +1

I have the same kit and I get 10mb/s easy transferring files
so I would take reviews with a grain of salt

  • I have just moved into an apartment, and thinking of getting a powerline adapter.

So is this a good one? Or should I consider another brand/model?

  • On MSY website it says on the homepage it is available for $89.

But if you check their pricelist it says its $99.

So can we buy it for $89 from them?

UPDATE: Just spoke to MSY, and they confirmed they will sell it for $89 if you buy it from the store in person.

    • Verify that it's the passthrough model, if so it's a good deal.

  • Picked one up a few days ago, I had price matched TGG at JB Hi-fi for $102.

The item is already a 'kit'. Comes with two in the box.

Sent through the mailed redemption confirmation yesterday. So not bad to get two kits for that price.

I know, I know. The non-passthrough kits are cheaper. But useless for me where there are single PowerPoints in a room. (Darn rentals)

  • TGG Marion wouldn't pricematch MSY, said they were grey importers. OW was able to pricebeat MSY's $99 but not the $89 on their homepage, said it was a "bundle deal".

Seriously can't believe the prices you guys are paying for this device. This is ozbargain after all, and you are paying Hardly Normal prices. $59 delivered from Wireless 1

    • Wow thats an amazing price, even cheapest price on Staticice is $96+

      Now I definitely can't say no to this.Thanks unity1!!!!

    • That's a good find. I was in need of a bricks and mortar store but if you have the time to wait. Strange they don't show up on Shopbot or Staticice though

    • Thanks, just bought one. Lets hope it works well in my apartment.

      • +1

If it doesn't work you could sell the used pair and the brand new pair (by redemption) and be way in front of your initial $59 outlay.

        • True that, so win win.

    • Nice find mate. Cheers.

  • Question, so I have a modem in the living room and want to use powerline adapter in 2 bedrooms.

So I have 1 adapter in each room obviously.

But do I need to have 2 powerline adapters connected to the modem or just 1 adapter connected to the modem would work for both bedrooms?

  • Bit of a silly question but does the deal work by:

    1) purchasing 2 and receiving a cashback on 1 of them; or
    2) purchasing 1 and receiving a 2nd for free from D-link after lodging the claim?

    Thanks in advance :)

    • +1

You purchase 1 kit (includes 2 powerline adapters) and you claim 1 kit free from D-Link.

I ordered from Wireless 1 on Wednesday night and received mine in Melbourne on Friday. Great service from Wireless 1.

      • Thanks mate.

  • When you buy this 309 kit do you actually get devices branded 308? Or can you accidentally buy some sort of older model? So confused about the feedback I am reading on Amazon…

    • I think mine were 309 but I'm not entirely sure where to check.

  • Anyone received their second one yet?

    • I received mine about a month ago!

      • Damn that's not good… mines been way over a month now since I put in the form and still no sign!

Not sure what to do at this point :*(

EDIT: shot Dlink an email in which they responded by calling me and clarifying that they have a huge backlog and it's at least in the system. Great customer service!

        • That's really good news. I think it's because I was pretty early in to the promotion.

Funnily enough, I haven't even opened the second set yet!
