  • this is $325.00 at MSY, no really need to go through all this too save like $30 imo.

    • More like $40. I think it is a lot easier to buy this online than travelling to a MSY store and dealing with lines and their level of customer service. Sure you have to wait but that is a small price to pay for a real ozbargainer.

      • I'm glad msy opened a store in mount pritchard the wait at auburn was sometimes shocking

        • For most consumer electronics I feel that you must have really bad luck/batch to require any warranty.

Realistically over the last few years how many items have you bought from reputable companies/sources and have had to deal with warranty?

      • If you don't mind waiting, and sending it back to the US if you need RMA, sure.

I have no problem with Amazon's RMA process. It's the best I've seen from an international company. But nothing beats local stock.

If you're tempted by a $41 saving, maybe hold on. Ebay might do more deals like 20% off and you could source it locally even cheaper.

        • I only have experience returning newly bought items back to Amazon. While the process is reasonably good, I had to pay for the return postage first (not sure whether Amazon now provides return label). I did get the postage refunded. I wouldn't say it is the best though since there are international sellers providing return labels (i.e. they pay for the courier cost for returns).

Regarding Samsung's RMA, I've only had experience dealing with the Samsung Australia. Generally good service, but can take a while. However, I am not impressed with the way Samsung dealt with 840 EVO and 840 SSDs in general. They know there is an issue and they put in a workaround for 840 EVO. For 840 users, they simply didn't / don't give a damn.

probably wont be honoured as its a back order.
    no deal here

Backorder doesn't necessarily mean price error, and local stock selling for $325 doesn't raise any price error alarms, so should be fine.

    • Last item i backordered from Amazon UK the order was cancelled by them. "Too bad, so sad" then on to the next sucker.

If they are going to take orders I'm sure Amazon should be able to fulfil them. It's not as though they haven't got a computer system that works…

      • They didn't gain anything from these "suckers" since they didn't charge anyone.

An order is not a contract. You aren't buying a house or car. They haven't taken your money, and their T&C reserves the right to cancel an order if the price was incorrectly listed.

Having said that, this price is not insane enough for it to be a pricing error. They will honor it.

  • Wow these came down fast! It was only a month ago that the 950 was $360 still.

My derp - only EVO not Pro

    • +2

Still a pretty impressive drop considering that the 960 EVO is a better drive than the 950 Pro

        No it's not.

And consider that the 1TB benches are higher than the 512GB version will be.

Looking at the wins (both the number and the margin of the wins) for the EVO compared to the losses, it's pretty clear that overall the EVO is better.

Take a look at 4K Random writes. The EVO absolutely destroys the Pro.

        • +1

@lostn: 4K random writes (and writes in general), 960 EVO is better (not surprising considering 4K random writes is a weak spot for 950 Pro). However, random reads, 950 Pro is still ahead. With TLC, once the buffer is exhausted, its true speed is revealed. So, anyone copying a lot of large data frequently (but then again, is that a good use of SSDs), MLC drives (950 Pro) are better.

I still don't trust TLC devices mainly because my most recent solid sate devices which broke are all TLC based (one Samsung TLC SSD, an SD card that's TLC based - not Samsung).

960 EVO certainly is impressive. However, for the price and it being TLC based, I am still hesitant to spend that much on a TLC drive (even though its performance can dominate even the best of previous gen consumer MLC SSDs).

        • @netsurfer: What's a good cheap m.2 nvme TLC based SSD? Or rather, how much are you willing to spend on one at 500GB?

The 960 Pro retails for $449.

        • @lostn:

You mean the synthetic benchmarks?? Take a look at the real benchmarks - it loses almost every one.

        • @yanman: Link to the real ones please. Or quote them. With an explanation of what makes them real.

        • @lostn:
They're both in that link. Synthetic is exactly as it sounds - not real world use, like 3dmark. The Anand benches combine multiple real world usage.

        • @lostn: A good cheap m.2 nvme SSD? Um, there isn't one currently available (otherwise someone would have posted it). Manufacturers know people want nvme SSDs.

Generally, I feel that if you really want to go for m.2 nvme SSD, go for the best one or the cheapest. Realistically, most people don't need m.2 nvme drives. Also, it depends on your motherboard/pc/nuc etc… For Skylake NUCs, intel didn't even enable x4 mode in the m.2 initially. For Broadwell NUCs, it is limited to x2.

960 EVO is a fantastic SSD. Value for money, definitely better than 960 Pro (if you don't mind TLC). However, for me, due to my poor experience with Samsung TLC SSDs (in terms of reliability and old data read performance issue), I would only consider TLC SSDs if they are at bargain prices. My opinion is biased though. Personally, I would pick 960 Pro coz. for me getting a performance m.2 drive, price is less of an issue. For my older NUCs/PCs, I would simply pick the cheapest m.2 (don't care whether it has nvme or not since those old PCs cannot really benefit much from it).

  • Good try but after last night gonna giv zon a break

    • They also caught me on their fake 64GB RAM pricing and other false promises throughout last year.

  • checkout turns out to be $295.xx on cba mastercard, I'll pass

    • Time to get a 28 Degrees or BankWest Platinum Zero.

      • Yeah I guess so

      • Or citibank transaction plus

  • Good price. They still haven't delivered the backorder of my 960 Pro 512GB from a few weeks ago. And no ETA.

So if you're planning to build within the next month, keep that in mind.

  • Price has gone up.
