While this may be the cheapest for 1TB 2.5" brand new posted there are other ways to get a bigger 2.5" drive for similar price.

^guide how to pull enclosure apart.

    • Is the 2TB version 2.5"? What about the 3TB version?

    • How do you reckon 4 of these 2TB Seagates would go in a Synology DiskStation DS416slim ? I'm thinking it would be a nice little Raid 5 box with about 6TB usable space.

      • Why so small? Are you taking it to LANs? xD

        • Ahh LANs, I remember them, hooking up the coax, missing a T piece, those were the days. Nah, just liking the idea of it. Along with a mini ITX gaming rig. One day… :-)

    Why?

      Minimise DOA I suppose.

Either that, or these are return stock.

Isn't there a way to read the SMART data off drives to see how long they have been powered on/read/write values

      • +2

DOA are very rare in HHD & you'd think this would have been already done when they were built and packaged… passed QC ??

    • +4

Exactly, absolutely no need for it.

      So what's the real reason?

  • +3

    Hi Guys,
Reason we are opening these is that we are only getting a DOA warranty from the Supplier as they are from a liquidated company so we need to check each one as we are supplying a 1 year replacement warranty to end users.

Ok for someone needing postage perhaps, but not a very attractive offer given the 1 year seller warranty.

This drive delivered + 1 year seller warranty = $78.95
Same drive purchased from MSY with 3 year manufacturer warranty = $83

The example on your page whenh checked on the manufacturer site returned:

"Not Valid for Warranty Verify warranty status > Ineligible for RMA creation".

    • They are new so ACL applies. You could at least argue they should last at least 3 years based on your comparison.

      • +1

Yes, but who needs that hassle for a measly few $ saved in this instance.

The fact the manufacturer site is not listing warranty could be as a result of these being sold as OEM to the original buyer, etc.

  • Any deals on the larger HGST's? 3 or 4TB?

  • I certainly would touch a drive that has had the package opened, especially for such a small saving & no manufacturers warranty.
