-From a Leatherman newbie… Overwhelmed by the choices!

    • +1

Completely understandable! If its your first multi-tool the Wingman is a great place to start for just over $50. Personally I went for the Wave because of the extra features I'd use (didn't want a partially serrated blade and wanted interchangeable screwdriver bits and a saw) but obviously it's almost twice the price too.

    • +13

I have (and ranked in order of class):

      Leatherman Squirt PS4
      Leatherman Rev
      2x Leatherman Wingmans
      Leatherman Sidekick
      Leatherman Wave

I highly recommend the Wingman for general purposes. (MUCH better than Rev - why? Scissors, plus spring-loaded pliers). The pliers on the Wingman are arguably better than the Wave. Also, the Wave, while having more tools has hugely inferior scissors to the Wingman (but a better blade).

The Sidekick and the Wingman are pretty much the same tool design, however you trade Scissors (Wingman) for Wood Saw (Sidekick) and lose the awesome package opener tool (Wingman).

      TLDR:

      Pocket? Squirt PS4
      Moron? Rev
Camping? Sidekick (or Wave too, I guess)
Around The House? Wingman (or Wave too, I guess)
      Garage/Toolkit? Wave

      • Would you say the wingman spring loaded pliers could break, in terms of the spring. Just curious why the more expensive wave wouldn't have them, I'm trying to decide which to get. The lack of a sheath and the additional cost factors in to.

Thanks muchly for you breakdown too.

        • +1

Not sure Spring Loaded = Cheap, as the Rev doesn't have spring loaded pliers and it's budget as.

The Wave's pliers are a bit beefier than the Wingman, but it's not that much different. Never thought the Wingman wouldn't be able to handle something and like I needed to go get my Wave. I suppose if you were doing SUPER heavy duty very frequently - but then you'd probably just use real pliers for that. Honestly, even the Squirt can take quite a beating. I love the Squirt - fits in the coin pocket in your pants. Indispensable!

          I also have about 20 Victorinox/Swiss Army Knives. I'm a bit crazy.

Edit: By the way, the Wingman has a Pocket Clip included - but no sheath. I find the Pocket Clip to be awesome.

Edit 2: PS. I'm not anti-Wave! I love my Wave too!

        • @vestrosaurus: Thanks. I might weigh up wingman and sheath cost vs wave and make a decision

Edit: When I factored in the sheath protection case, I went with the Rebar. Thoughts? I need the carry pouch for my job and the difference is less than $3 I think

      • As someone who owns almost every model of Leatherman, I'm surprised the Skeletool wasn't included.. I know 2 - 3 other people with multiple Leathermans, and the Skeletool CX is always a favourite.

I find that camping is when I make the most use of these tools. Personally I like the Charge TTi, but the Signal isn't bad either.

        • I agree. The Skeletool CX is on my wish list. It's a bit light on the tools (kind of the point) and I have a lot of really good knives (with good steel) so I've never taken the leap. Personally, I like to carry my Victorinox Cadet in Red Alox the most. It's certainly not the most functional but boy is it puuuuurdy!

        • Hey mate,

Any recommendations on what would be useful during life in the Military? Needs to take a lot of pain.

        • @Ruptur3:

Probably worth checking out the MUT or the MUT EOD. The MUT is focused on firearms maintenance, while the EOD is more focused on explosives. That said, if you have no need for firearms maintenance or explosives in what ever role you have in the military, any of the other tools might suffice. If you don't mind the additional weight over the smaller multitools, the Charge TTi is a good all rounder.

        • Uh. What i'm shooting for is Combat Engineer,so i can definitely imagine i'd be doing both. But yeah, i'll definitely check them out. Cheers.

      • Was under the impression Juice S2 was best value.
Isnt on list, although seller has it.
Ultimately i view these as a compromise. Use the right tool for job. Im not a maintenance person.

      • Bought wingman as first timer as per your recommendation. Thanks for the advice.

    • +1

If you're a nutnfancy (Youtube knife reviewer) fan, this Juice S2 review might convince you:

He also has reviews of many other Leatherman tools.

  • +2

Not the best prices there have ever been, but the best current price. Need one with the belt clip, like the look of the Skeletool cx, hence have ordered one. Thanks OP!

    • Picked up a Wingman from Amazon for around $33 shipped back when the dollar was strong but I don't think we'll be seeing prices like that again for some time.

  • In need of one!! Thanks opm

  • Great effort! Nice prices!

  • This is great. Thanks.

  • I have a wingman, Amazing quality!

  • +7

    Didn't really need one, didn't particularly want one… bought one… thanks :)

  • Picked up a Leatherman squirt over 10yrs ago from credit card points. Has been the most used and reliable tool in that time, highly recommended. Just remember to take it off your keychain if catching a flight!
Edit: The reason I highly recommend it is due to its quality and its size allows you to carry it everywhere. The tools are basic-knife, scissors and screwdriver which makes the tool a simple assistant.
I have the older version with scissors where the pliers are, so looks like upgrade time!

  • Thanks! I've been eyeing the leatherman style which is also available: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-LEATHERMAN-STYLE-PS-BLACK-STA…

    • i've been carrying this tool for a few years. week point is probably the scissors — the spring bar can snap if you're trying to cut something a bit stiffer. i've just bought spare scissors off ebay and replaced it myself.

  • Great prices. Paid $128 about a month ago for the Wave and nylon sheath from this store direct. May look at the extra drill bits to add to the sheath.

  • +3

Thanks OP, sounds like these deals are a cut above the rest…

  • Guys, has anyone had any issues carrying these overseas (in checked in luggage)?

These multitools would be great for travelling abroad because there's times when you need to cut something (i.e. fruit in a hotel room) or scissors to open packaging etc and this would be really handy.

    • Haven't personally tried, but as the majority contain a knife and/or scissors would strongly suggest against trying this in your carry on at least!

EDIT: Leatherman claim taking it in checked baggage is ok -> https://www.leatherman.com.au/support/faqs/

    • +1

Checked luggage is ok, carry on NOT. I lost a micra once as I forgot to put it in the luggage and didn't have the time to do anything about it.

    • had the leatherman supertool with leather sheath in checked in luggage. no issues.

    • never an issue in checked baggage. i always bring a multitool with when i travel, even if i only ever stay within cities

      • Awesome! But I take it you guys wouldn't be walking around with it in your handbag/daybag incase you get audited by the cops?

Reason I ask is in places like Thailand, they sometimes randomly search your bags at the train stations, so dunno the implications if you get caught with one of these, even if your intentions are purely to use it "just incase I need it"

So I take it this might be one of those things that remains in the hotel room

        • +1

mine's a SOG powerlock which is pretty heavy to carry around on my person.

it's also all-black (therefore, super scary!!) so it stays at the bottom of my bag unless i need it.

never been searched by cops in Germany, Austria, Singapore or Malaysia but YMMV

    • I've carried a Leatherman multitool in my checked luggage for every flight over the last 10 years. Never had any issue. For that matter, I accidentally carried a machete for two flights, and they didn't care about that either. :P

      • +3

        Lol @ machete

They made a big deal when I got on the plane with an umbrella, and here you are cruising with a machete! Lol

        • +1

Maybe they thought you were a spy cartying an umbrella gun.

          /bigbrotheriswatching

  • Hmm. My Leatherman Squirt PS4 was a bit of a disappointment as the pliers broke. I was expecting a bit more but maybe it was just my expectations. I have been thinking of getting a new one, not the squirt though, to hang off my keyring. I might just try a no-name cheapo after that experience. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know.

    • +2

25 Year warranty. I've replaced mine 2 times in the last 5 years. Handy thing, not unbreakable, but free replacement.

      • Hmm good point. I might email their support and see what they say, other than that it's fine and in good order. Thanks.

  • +1

these guys also stock spyderco knives :)

  • Was going to buy the skeletool a couple of weeks back but will get the wingman instead for this good price. Dunno how useful it'll be but given their rep for longevity I'm sure I'll find something to use it for

  • Any good for first time

    • Wingman is hard to go past at $53.

  • Got the surge. Was going to get the Wingman, but Jimmy DiResta uses the Surge! Lame!

  • thanks for posting OP and thanks to all the useful comments/advice, I got a wingman!

  • Literally left my leatherman in a roof cavity somewhere… Within the last 3 days. Thanks OP!

    • +4

Take it that it wasn't your house?

      • Sounds like he had to cut and run lol

I take it that these are great for breaking into other people's houses?

      • Running networking cables in an install, not my house lol

  • Literally left my leatherman in a roof cavity somewhere… Within the last 3 days. Thanks OP!

    • +13

What a coincidence, the guy right above you did the same thing.

  • +1

I've had the surge for about three years now and has been one of the most useful things I use. It almost gets used every day. Take it on every overseas trip. Absolutely necessary for backcountry camping, but a good companion around the house, gardening, bike maintenance, almost everything!

Edit: Only complaint is that it's a bit heavy, and I broke the saw piece quite easily. However, those are replaceable and the build quality is great.

  • Thanks OP, got the wave

  • Always wanted a wingman but could never justify it. This price is too good to pass up. Thanks op.

Just noticed that the wingman is now "almost gone". So don't muck around.

    • Mine just got marked as sent 😎

      • +1

Still says more than 10 available.

One less after me order. 😁

  • Got the Wave, 42 bit kit, bit-extender & nylon sheath for $156.40.

  • Any comments on the quality of the nylon sheaths? Worth buying one for a wingman?

  • Is anyone using a black Leatherman, does the black start to chip off after some use?

    • +1

Don't own a black Leatherman, so maybe someone with one can comment further, but was steered away from it based on a number of reviews stating the black oxide comes off on your hands for at least the first few uses and it shows scratches more than the stainless steel finish. Shame, because it looks great.

      • That's what i read and was worried about.

    • +2

I've been using my black oxide Leatherman Wave daily for the past 5 years now, and have had minimal black wear off. Would highly recommend. Feel naked on the weekends without it in my pocket.

      • Your experience sounds pretty positive, might give it a go.

    • +1

I don't have one of the multitools in black, but I do have the Leatherman Tread with what I believe is the same coating. So far I haven't had any of it come off, with a fair bit of use.

  • +1

Squirt no sheath…. har har har ahr har

    • +2

That's going to end up costing you more than your 20% saving in the long run.

  • +1

So I got a hobby farm at and going to do some hunting as well and it will be my first multi tool. I like the nylon sheath so should I go for wave or wingman and can I use the attachment heads on both these

    • The Wingman obviously doesn't come with a sheath so this would be an additional $20 or so if you want one (something like this -> http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LEATHERMAN-NYLON-SHEATH-WINGMAN-S…). Assuming you mean the interchangeable bits with your second question? (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LEATHERMAN-42-BIT-KIT-MULTI-TOOL-…) If so the Wingman has a fixed phillips head and 2 fixed flat tip screwdrivers; you can't use these bits with it, while you can with the Wave.

      • So does the clip come with Wingman or sold seperately? in that case, if I want to carry with me, should I buy a sheath? $20 is quiet a bit consider its only $53 item…

        • Yes, the Wingman comes with a pocket clip (which is an optional accessory on the Wave). Have always kept my leatherman in a sheath, but agree it's relatively expensive as a standalone purchase! It's probably not an absolute necessity, though does help protect from scratches.

        • Thanks that's good to know it comes with a clip at least I can use that. $20 is very steep for $53 product

        • @ATreeFiddy:

How come there is a separate listing for the Wingman & a pocket clip at a slightly higher price?

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/122006465054

        • @yamumma: Good question, perhaps a spare or different style clip? Seems redundant as the Wingman definitely comes with one!

        • @yamumma: yeah i noticed that too after i ordered my wingman. I assume it's a spare clip but I'm not sure why you would need one. If anything happened to the original it would probably be a warranty job.

I'll be unhappy of mine arrives without a clip…

        • @wombat81: The Wingman eBay item has "Removeable Pocket Clip" as a feature in the listing. Yours will have one :).

  • Bought the Wingman. Thanks OP!

    • Let me know if this Wingman helps you score with women

      • +1

I'm already so much more confident, knowing one's on the way. I'll keep you posted!

  • why these so cheap compare to aluminum on kmart?

    • These are stainless steel, not aluminium.

      • Right, aluminum should be more expensive since it is lighter.

        • And weaker….

        • -1

@lnq: Well that's an iron alloy, not normal aluminium. I would imagine any tool made from that (if there are even any available) would be strong, light and very, very expensive.

        • @wombat81: did you ever read the article? it states FeAlu and 10% cost.

        • @lnq: I'm not sure what you're actually debating about so I'll stop talking now. Have a nice day.

  • My first Leatherman is a Wingman and it was a right decision! A few things I love about it:
+ The spring-action plier: I found it's much more convenient compared to a normal one. Not sure why the flagship Wave doesn't have it.
+ The spring-action scissor: this is the reason why I chose the Wingman over the Sidekick. Believe me, you will use the scissor more frequent than you think!
+ The package opener: very handy indeed
+ The pocket clip: sometimes you can just clip it to your pocket and bring it around, no need for a sheath.
PS: a wingman, true to its name!

  • Got me a wave with all the trimmings for $156
Nylon Sheath, Clip, Bit Extender and bits

    • You must of missed @ATreeFiddy post above, "it's about $4 cheaper to get the Wave with 42 bit kit then get the bit extender separately, This works out at exactly $152."

  • Has anyone found out which courier company they are using to freight these? My tracking comes up invalid on both auspost and courier's please, which are the couriers mentioned on the listing.

Yeah i could contact the seller but it doesn't really matter. I'm just being impatient and don't need to pester them.

    • I'd say it's Couriers Please. My Surge is the same. Wouldn't bother contacting the seller. They've probably just lodged a pickup through the courier system and the items are awaiting collection; ergo no scan events.

    • My tracking comes up in AusPost.

      • Ahh yep. Mine is now too. Thanks.

  • What do people think of the surge?
