Unfortunately travel spend does not include flights

Only spend on prepaid hotels, car hire and experiences are eligible for this offer, except where payment is made directly to the supplier (i.e. FINE HOTELS & RESORTS or The Hotel Collection).

    • +2

Thanks for the TGIF link. Is there one for the travel?

    • +1

      TFT TGIF

  • +3

Travel must be targeted - Can't see it :(

  • +2

Travel was on my AmEx issued card (and its supplementary) but not on my Westpac issued card.

    • I got the travel offer on my Amex issued card too.. my sup card got nothing though.. weird how my sup card always require manual sign up with any deals… :(

      Oh well, better than nothing!

    • How do you see offers on the Westpac card?

  • +1

Got it, just after spending $500 on travel stuff on Sunday. God damn it.

    • Cancel and re-book?

      • It'd cost more than I'd save. Oh well!

    • You got it because it's targeted.. ..to people who spend on Travel =)

      • Hah I mean I didn't book anything thru Amex Travel… although I do have charges from Virgin and CheapTickets.com on there so they probably were able to figure it out.

    • Same, spent $1200 on hotels, went with Mastercard because they saved 12% on expedia instead of 10%… $50 is more than the 2% was :( Non refundable too.

      • I tried to get the 12% coupon but kept getting an error message.

  • +1

Got both on my DJs AMEX :)

  • Got both on my explorer and essential

  • Thanks TA.

Is there anyway to get an email from Amex when they update the offers?

    • +1

      Usually every Tuesday morning.

      • Close enough. Thanks.

  • Anyone know if you can use the travel credit on the Amex cards can be used with this offer?

    • Yes. You can.

Payment can be made with a combination of your American Express Card and Membership Rewards or Travel Credit, but the value applied to the eligible Card must meet the spend criteria to qualify for the offer.

      • Can you use two credit cards for the one booking?

        • +1

I doubted. Like all travel booking site, I don't think that you can split payments with 2 credit cards. Will be great if we can :P

        • @gm3stevens:

Four days. 2 two day bookings then.

        • +1

@sween64: Yeah. That's a good idea as long as you meet the requirment of spending $200 on one card in 1 or more transaction.

        • +1

@sween64: Risk having to move rooms

        • +3

@lainey13: Contact the hotel and inform them after booking. I'm sure they'll be accommodating.

  • Thanks, Travel one showed up on my AmEx issued card. :)

  • Amex Travel deal cannot be used for flights :(

  • Thanks OP. The travel offer was on my Platinum Reserve credit card, but not on my Platinum Charge card. ( both Amex issued).
I can only see a 'book by' t & c. Are there any 'Travel by ……' terms?

Even with the offer, TGIF has to be one of the most hideously overpriced restaurants around

    • +2

Entertainment BOGOF, $41 (?) ribs x 2 = $82, BOGOF offer brings it down to $42, 25% off (just buy gift cards above) = $31.50 for two jack daniels ribs with chips. Not incredibly cheap but for a full rack, ~$16 is pretty good. Also need to consider that some TGI Fridays are better than others. For Melbourne I think Doncaster has the best ribs

      • Would appreciate if you can clarify your comment.

Entertainment BOGOF, $41 (?) ribs x 2 = $82, BOGOF offer brings it down to $42, 25% off (just buy gift cards above)

Does Entertainment refers to Entertainment book?
What does the 25% (just buy gift card) means? Are there TGIF giftcards with 25% off ? Yes, giftcard will address having to spend $100 at one go, a condition of the Amex offer.

        Many thanks in advance.

        • +1

The entertainment book offer entitles you to buy one get one free up to $40 in value.

If you purchase a $100 gift card with your amex, you will be able to achieve basically 25% off any amount of transaction (up to $100 or however many multiples of $100 as amexes you have)

the entertainment book supplies you with two coupons, so once you add a few drinks or desserts in there, you should be able to get two meals for two out of it.

The only restriction i guess is that the buy one get one free gives the cheaper of the two meals for free so you want to maximise it by having the same thing. This means you need to stop the mrs from getting a salad and go for a steak or other meal that maximises the $40 you will be spending on the ribs :D Of course you can also choose to both have the cheaper burgers or other menu items but that reduces the $40 maximum provided as the free meal

          hope that helps!

        • @peter05: Now I get it. Thanks very much. And I suppose the giftcard can also delay the expiry of Entertainment vouchers (1 June). I looked at the TGIF Australia site; cannot find reference to giftcards there. Do they have to be bought in store?

        • +1

          @bluesky:

no the gift cards only delay the expiry of the amex deal and means you don't have to spend $100 in one go, it doesn't affect the entertainment voucher which expires 1st of june.

New books come out for the following year in april sometime usually so if you want to wait for that then it will maximise the time you have to use it until it expires. In the meantime you can pick up the gift voucher

The gift voucher must be purchased in the store, it's just a little paper one with a stamp and they keep a book out the back. I am NOT SURE if it is valid across different branches so it is easier to purchase at the location you intend to use them. ASSUME that it doesn't work, as it's not digital and i'm not sure if it's franchised etc etc. Sometimes you get vouchers for BOGOF for free for chapel st but as I mentioned, their ribs aren't cooked as nicely and compared to Doncaster their service can be slower

        • @peter05: Of course, delay Amex deal, not the EB vouchers, can't think when lack of sleep … Thanks for explaining how to get the gift vouchers. Cheers.

        • @peter05:

Just confirming with this entertainment voucher if you spend say $45 for the rib eye steak, they still allow you to use the buy one get one free they just take the maximum ($40) off the bill not the actual amount which was $45?

Also anyone had any luck ordering desserts with the entertainment app.. eg buy one dessert get one free instead of buying a main?

        • @aussie1:

yes, as long as you don't have someone on the table ordering something cheaper, as they will always give the cheaper one free

        • @aussie1: Actually, it is specifically one main for one main free. So I don't think it will work with buying a dessert. And yes, they will only subtract the max ($40).

    • Checked reviews of the restaurant in google, sounds not good

      • +1

I think it will depend on your standards. Make sure when you read the reviews that it is sorted by most recent rather than "most helpful", double quotes around helpful.

From what I have seen most times being there, they don't have enough staff cleaning the tables. I am not sure if it's due to lack of staff as there are more than plenty in my opinion, but I always found it strange when they would tell me it would be 15 minutes to wait for a table but there are quite a number that I can see from the front counter.

I have never found the service to be rude, it may be not exceptional but I would definitely rate it about the same as a pub, which may irk some customers as they are paying probably twice the price as you would at a pub. The waitresses or waiter serving would still smile, place the plate down gently etc and come ask you how your food is. You won't get someone coming around filling your glasses and sometimes they do forget to bring water to the table etc but it's not a biggie.

I only order the Jack Daniels ribs and those have been exceptional each and every time. The Jam Factory is a bit of a hit and miss as is Melbourne Central. I haven't frequented Forest hill or Epping enough to comment on those but the few times i've been there they have been great as well.

For me, getting two racks of ribs for ~$30 is good enough that I honestly don't care if the service is slow, crap or rude although i've never experienced any of those :)

        • I haven't really had issues with service…but $25 for a burger which is just HJ quality served on a fancier plate is pretty poor form.

Last time I had their "happy hour lunch" thing, and the burger was smaller than a whopper and the patty wasn't any better either. I had to ask them to redo the chips because the chips I got were warm at best. When they redid it they put enough salt to raise my blood pressure 3 times over…another polite request to redo and then they turned out fine.

I figured that for lesser money, I can have burgers that are in another league altogether (Fat Bob's, Rockwell, Burger Lounge, Royal Stacks, Huxta, Laurie Dees to name a few)…

I haven't tried the ribs as yet, but for this offer might as well give the ribs a go…

  • no flights is a bummer
wonder if anyone brave enough to book yet

  • Also got this one

Save the offer to your eligible Card and spend $100 or more on that Card, in one or more transactions, online at woolworths.com.au only by 14/2/2017 to receive one $10 credit. Limited to the first 15,000 Cards to save the offer.

    • There's another deal for that.

  • TGI is good ias there is also a buy one get one free entertainment voucher.

    • Where could you find BOGOF voucher?

      • +1

entertainment book, $65/year, the best value vouchers in there i think are

2x TGI Fridays BOGOF up to $40
5% off year round woolworths gift cards (although cashrewards and other reward sites give more sometimes and without membership)
3x Chemist Warehouse spend $50 get $10 off
Accomodation offers that I've found always beat Expedia and other travel sites (like for like)
1x New Shanghai get 25% off coupon, this was amazing with the amex shop small year (get 50% off + 25% off) but it's not available anymore but great food for already competitive before discount coupons
2x Laurent buy cake + hot drink get one free, another amazing deal with amex shop small (spend $20 get $10 back, 4x cakes and 4x coffees for $15 yes please)

      • +2

        In the Entertainment Book.

    • Pity TGIF is just rubbish.

I was a fan when I was a teenager and didn't know better, but there are infinitely better American style diners than TGIFs.

I thought it was bad a few years ago, but time heals all wounds. Then last year took my kids there and it was horrible.

      • Yes, years ago, they used to be better, in terms of menu/food. Last time I went, they even charge for sauce. But with the combined deals bringing down price to reasonable, I guess it is still pretty good value.

…there are infinitely better American style diners than TGIFs.

Any you can recommend? Ideally, not too pricey :-)

        • +1

          Huxtaburger, 8 Bit

        • +1

          @sween64:

I found 8 bit burger very underwhelming but I think I may have picked a crappy burger.

Is 8 bit burger only in Melbourne?

        • +2

I'm glad to hear it was better back then as I use to enjoy TGIF, my last few experiences I was like 'WTF was I thinking?' lol.

Bob's burgers is prob one of the original burger places, there are now many good american style burger places.

TGIF patties tastes more like frozen McDonald's patties than real patties (how hard can it be to get fresh minced beef and grill it?).

There are also places like Third Wave Cafe that does decent ribs.

TGIF had it's time.. no better or worst than Outback Jacks/Hog's Breath. I'm still not sure how these chains are still in business in Melbourne where there are much better choices for the same money.

        • +1

@illumination: Yes, a quick search looks like 8 bit burger is in Melbourne and Footscray (suburb of Melb) only.

        • @JB1: Thanks. I assume Bob's burgers is Fat Bob's Bar and Grill? Yeah, I heard some not so positive things about Outback Jacks/Hog's Breath, so never bother - even though they would be the most accessable.

        • +1

          @bluesky:

Yeah Fat Bobs, even then there are lots of equal if not better burger places around.

        • +1

          @bluesky:

Lol yea outback Jack's is a bit rubbish. I've been there a couple of times only because of the free birthday meal, but I objectively don't think it's worth it and did not bother taking advantage of the last 2 free meals they sent me.

    • If you're making use of Entertainment Book offer, keep in mind that TGIF cheaps out by only deducting the cheapest main course if more than two main courses are ordered. Hence, it isn't strictly a BOGOF offer.

  • Yayy I got targeted. Thanks OP.

  • Hah 2 of my Supp cards got targeted, but the other 2 (less active but same accounts) didn't!

  • +2

Happy new Amex year! Let the deals roll in.

For those looking for a new Amex, get those applications in:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

  • no travel deal for both of myself and my wife :(

  • Anyone tried using on flights?

  • Just realised the travel offer is only valid for travel booked via the amex travel website where the prices are nothing special. So not feeling too bad at having booked cheaper hotels just beforehand :)
