ALDImobile - 1 Year Prepaid Super Pack $249 (Unlimited Calls, SMS, MMS, 42GB Data) Starts 4/2

5603

Was browsing the new Aldi catalogue this evening and saw this. Seems like a decent deal. Can't see it online yet. Updated to online link (thanks zzymurgy).

1 year "Super Pack". Unlimited standard calls, SMS, MMS, 42 GB data. Nothing in the conditions about the cost of extra data. On sale from Saturday February 4th.

Monthly sums: $20.75 per month. 3.5 GB per month - again nothing in the conditions about how the data works, I guess assume it's 42 GB up front until more info appears on-line. Aldi uses part of Telstra network and claims that covers 98.8% of Australian population.

        • @clse945111: Except Boost uses 700mhz and they recommend phones that have that band, and does not have 4GX access. Lack of 4GX is the difference between Boost and Telstra service. They have the same coverage map.

      • I agree. I live semi-rural and most of the time I don't have reception with Aldi despite great Telstra, Optus and Vodafone signals.

  • +3

Better off paying three dollars extra per month to get 8GB on Kogan

    • +62

I'd pay $3 more just to NOT go with Kogan.

      • Is kogan network bad? or support?

        • -2

          kogan is trash

        • +13

Kogan is Voda. If voda is good, Kogan is good. People just trash talk because they can. Same with Aldi.

Everyone knows if your going outside metro or east/south coastal regional towns that Telstra/boost is the only real provider.

I've convinced se family on the Gold Coast to switch from virgin (optus) to Aldi and they've be amazed at how quick the internet is and the lack of missed calls. I've also switched some from Optus & Telstra to Kogan and they've been impressed with not only the coverage (Nth NSW & GC) but the internet speeds too. Sure the coverage isn't quite the same, but the value is very good.

        • +2

          @supabrudda:

Agree. I was on optus for 2 years and switched to Kogan mobile w/o issue. I got the 12GB pack and so far, so good.

I don't get the hate; it works fine and seems like a screaming deal. service is fast. No complaints from me.

        • +5

          @travs:
You may not understand what happened earlier that brought "the hate"
Kogan offered a cheap deal with Telstra Network access, and ended the service promptly, leaving customers without sufficient communication.
Customers were forced to call their inadequately staffed helpline, and wait for periods often measured in hours, whilst forced to listen to Hall and Oates "Maneater" looping on repeat.
There was cruelty baked in to their service that you just could not believe.

        • I have been with Kogan for the last few months. No complaints, great service and internet speeds. I'm in Sydney metro though, never taken it rural.

        • maybe, but Voda+optus roaming is good

        • @random trashbag: Me too. I've got great speeds. I live in Melbourne metro. Maybe regionally it's not a good option.

        • +2

          @pete2:

to listen to Hall and Oates "Maneater" looping on repeat.

Then it may not have been that bad. I like that song.

        • +2

@ChillBro: LOL, you must be a serious fan.
Maybe listening to it 20 times in a row on a dodgy phone handset with 2kHz of bandwidth.
Try this on your phone loudspeaker for an hour or two to whet your appetite.

          enjoy!

        • @pete2:

I get that. However, the new, re-launched service seems to not have those issues, at least so far. I spent a good while researching them and there seem to be few complaints now.

      • +5

I'll pay extra $6 to not go with Kogan, got the 5$ deal few months ago. When I called to port to Optus the lady warned me that there is likely going to be an issue as they won't let numbers get ported out without a fight and guess what it happened to me took 3 days Optus shitty overseas call centres didn't help in the end I had to get a supervisor to contact them and do a manual port… I would not go Kogan again even if it mean missing out on a good deal not worth the hassle

        • We had an issue with my wife's a while back going from Optus to Voda, was told that the person that set up her Optus account left her date of birth at 1/1/12 (or whatever year it was) so the system was bouncing it back. Pain in the ass.

        • +8

how much would you pay NOT to go with VAYA then?

        • +3

i ported a number in and out of kogan before, without issue. What was the problem?

        • +1

I was on the same $5 deal a few months ago (amazing deal btw) and I ported out from Kogan without any hassles.. Took about 15mins. No issues. You must be a very very sought after telco customer :)
How about the Kogan/Vodafone coverage while you were with them?
I don't get all the Kogan bashing :S I can probably understand if it were all rural/country customers who don't get good Vodafone coverage in those areas, but I've used it in both Perth metro and Sydney metro with no issues with coverage/speed/anything, must be lucky!

      • +2

After the Hall and Oates experience I simply -will- not ever do Kogan mobile again. ever.

        • +1

I still have nightmares about this….

      • -2

        Vaya>Kogan

        • +1

Definitely not true, just switched myself!

    • +3

That's good to point out, however I'm considering this plan because it supposedly will allow better coverage for my area over the Vodafone network. Can't use the extra data if there's no signal y'know?

    • Wow, what's with all the negs? He brings up a good point. I struggle using up less than 8GB a month, can't imagine how I'd survive on only 3.5GB.

    • -1

I'm with Kogan right now. Was happy until I went overseas. My phone was complete blank, and the SIM was not even recognised. I'm not that kind that pays roaming charges, etc. but I'd really like to be able to at least receive text messages (free) and update my phone time using mobile networks (free). Luckily, I had a telstra SIM, which I put in my phone on day one.

Have to wait for 10 months until Kogan plan ends to buy Aldi.

    • $249 for ALDI 3.5GB a month
      $279.95 for Kogan 8GB a month

How is it only $3.00 extra?

      • Per month.

        • Ok got ya cheers
          Kogan from me

        • @Regie69: Hey where is the plan for the Kogan 8gb for 279.95? I don't seem to be able to find it

        • +1

          @terraye: finished 31st Jan

    • No you're not, Kogan is Vodafone, Aldi is Telstra.

  • Too bad Aldi Mobile's iOS app is so rubbish.

    • +7

You shouldn't even have a crapple to begin with =p

      • +15

Preference in phone manufacturers can replace religion in the old adage.

Having a favourite phone manufacturer is like a penis.
It's perfectly fine to have one but when you start waving it in people's faces, a portion of the population may like it but most will be annoyed seeing a giant knob.

(No offence meant, just rewording a favourite of mine)

        • +2

I thought you were going to start philosophising about "size is not everything, it's what you do with it that matters"

        • +1

True Ozbargainers don't have knee jerk, compulsive reactions when people mention Apple.

        • +5

I find it so strange when people do things like this. Who cares what phone somebody uses.

        • -5

          @fivespice:

Because the sheep clearly don't know you can get a much better specced Android phone for the same price that crapple is asking for, it's just overpriced junk

        • +1

@montorola: Feel better now? Really isnt that their problem?

        • +3

          @montorola:

I've had 4 Android phones and 4 iPhone's in the past. Neither have been anywhere near perfect, but overall the iPhone has been more stable and reliable when I have really needed it to be.

    • +1

Too bad even if it wasn't it would be nothing more than a waste of your phone's space.

Putting my "irrational" hatred of stupid apps brought on mostly by the forcing of Messenger (use Facebook Lite, if for no reason other than giving them the finger) aside, you can check your balance without the app, you can check your voicemails without the app, you can recharge your credit without the app, monitor your data usage without the app, what else would you be doing?

  • Any idea which prepaid plan this is related to? On their page: https://www.aldimobile.com.au/
It looks like the 'L' pack but with more data. Anyone already used aldi mobile?

    • +2

I'm already on ALDI (and I highly recommend it). The fine print says

To access the ALDImobile 1 year super pack you need to activate the service and recharge using the included voucher code on or before 31 January 2018

So it isn't a value pack but probably something you buy in-store, it gives you a code and you add it online

      • +1

I like know if you can buy it online as i do not have aldi store local close one is 1400 km away.

        • Head to your nearest ALDI store form 4th February and pick up a 1 Year Super Pack, it will contain everything you need to get started including a SIM card and a voucher code for the Super Pack.

From the guy below who guessed the link (you're a legend zzymurgy) it says it is limited time only and instore.

        • That sucks Aldi doesn't offer online for remote customers.
I pass 2-3 Aldi stores daily. If you really want this deal, I'd like to somehow be able to assist by picking one up on your behalf and snail mailing. It'd involve a bit of trust from one ozbargainer to another +postage.
          Let me know.
          /Ken

        • @Far Ken:

          Farken nice gesture!

    • +2

I've been with ALDI for years and I honestly can't fault them. I get 4g coverage in most areas. My wife and I are very happy with them.

      • Thanks for letting me know. Sounds like their customer service is decent too?

        • To be honest with you I haven't had to deal with customer service in the 3 years I've been with them. Take from that what you will.

  • +27

Here's the link. (I guessed the URL!)

It's not a monthly plan, it's actually a 42GB plan that lasts for a year. You can top up the data whenever you like. You can also add it to your existing Aldimobile plan.

Important information Excludes all use overseas. For personal use only, acceptable use policy applies, visit our legals page for more details. 1Excludes some use such as: calls to international numbers, satellite numbers, and premium numbers (eg. 19xx numbers); video MMS; SMS/MMS to international or satellite numbers, and premium numbers (eg. 19xx numbers). Any MMS that includes Video or Audio is charged at $1 and deducted from your Pay As You Go (PAYG) credit. If you have anexisting Value or Data Pack on your service and you add this 1 Year Super Pack, it will override your existing pack and any remaining credits will be forfeited. Once you have the 1 Year Super Pack added to your service, you will not be able to add any Value Packs or Data Packs to your service until your 1 Year Super Pack has expired. You should refer to our Critical Information Summary to determine if this is the right plan for you.

    • +3

Once you have the 1 Year Super Pack added to your service, you will not be able to add any Value Packs or Data Packs to your service until your 1 Year Super Pack has expired.

      Hmm!

      • +1

I honestly doubt that. How stupid would they be ti not let you spend more money?

      • There's more to it, zzymurgy hasn't quoted all of the T&C. See discussion below.

      • +1

You can buy another 2Gb for $15 a few times but they won't let you buy more than 62Gb, as I understand the fine print, of data. Which might mean you can but 10 times 2Gb for $150? This is different to what other people are saying.

    • +1

      That is some excellent guesswork.
      Kudos.

    • Do you get any PAYG credit from taking up this plan? If so, how much? Couldn't see it listed anywhere.

    • link doesnt work

  • Can someone clarify how they manage excess data over the 42GB? Say you run out in the 11th month, is it just a matter of buying a data pack?

    • It says:

Once you have used up your Data Add-on, you can choose to purchase another Data Add-on or you can use data on your phone provided you have Pay As You Go credit on your service. Data will then be charged at 5c per MB.

    • Once you have the 1 Year Super Pack added to your service, you will not be able to add any Value Packs or Data Packs to your service until your 1 Year Super Pack has expired. You should refer to our Critical Information Summary to determine if this is the right plan for you.

My take away from this is that the plan exists as long as you have data. Once your data runs out, you fall back to purchasing the regular pre-paid offerings.

Can anyone else clarify how Aldi mobile plans work?

      • You can buy super pack specific data packs which are 2GB for $15, but you can only buy 5 of them at maximum during the year

      • The plan is still active as you have your free national calls and texts and you can make international calls by adding PAYG credit. So you only need to buy a Data Addon (up to 5 max) if you don't want to PAYG for data.

        • +3

Actually, it doesn't say that the data add-on can only be bought 5 times. It says
"You can add the 2GB Data Add-on at any time and you can add it as many times as you like, but you cannot have more than a total of 62GB of Data on your service at any one time.

        • Wouldn't that mean you can buy 10 times 2Gb = 20Gb plus base 42Gb = 62Gb.

        • @abacus: It's better than that, you can have up to 62GB in hand at any time so when you run short you can buy more. But it all expires at the end of the year so you can't hoard 62GB for the second year.

  • Good deal. Will get one for each of us. Both on L currently. Extra data and less cost annually.

  • +3

fortunately, my kogan's plan is still not too bad compared to Aldi's new plan.

  • +1

Already on the L like a lot of users so myself and my wife will be grabbing this when it comes out. Thanks OP!

  • +1

Great plan, glad to see so many excited for it.

Question about international calls though - how much credit remains for that?

    • looks like its Zero credit

if you want to make any calls to numbers not shown in the rate table below (e.g. international numbers) you will need to add Pay As You Go (PAYG) credit to your service. Once your Value Pack credit has depleted or expired, usage will then be depleted from your Pay As You Go credit (if you have any available) at Pay As You Go rates. Please refer to the Pay As You Go plan information for full rate details.

  • +1

currently on M plan for about 2yrs and will be jumping on board

  • +1

I'm still on the old TPG Optus $12.99 plan. Still haven't kicked me off.

I'll upgrade to this. The Commbank CC $250 cashback I just received will cover it.

    Cheers, OP

  • Is this 4g or 3g?

Also what is the cost after 1 year?

Might cost a lot more after a year…

    • 4G. After one year I guess you can choose which one of their plans to go to, AYG, etc. or port away.

    • "The network capability of ALDImobile’s mobile solution has access to download speeds of up to 100Mbps on 4G across 95% of the population. 4G devices will enjoy typical download speeds of 2-50Mbps and upload speeds of 1 to 10 Mbps in 4G coverage areas."

    • +1

To think, what mobile plans could be out there, in a years time… 😮

    • Read the linked image?

  • +1

Tempting. But woolies for $27 a month, while works out a bit more expensive over a year, has no lock in, and you get more data over the year provided that you join with a $45 pack (which are sometimes half price) then drop to the $27 recharges (with rewards card).

    • +1

Rewards card makes it half price?

      • 10% off I think. But every 6 months or so they do 30% off the $45 recharge so just stock up then. Works out around $31 for 8gb data a month. And it has data rollover

        • So it's a prepaid plan? Eh.

        • So you mean to say, when the half price or 30% recharge offers come, we can buy a lot and keep them for future recharges? can we use rewards card along with it for additional 10% then?

        • +1

          @bkoolrocks:

Yeah. Each time it happens, I stock up with about 6 months worth. Ends up being great value. And Woolworths Mobile runs on Telstra as well. 8GB a month, with Data rollover works out well for me.

        • @tonytone: how can we get the rewards card 10% on these when u buy n stack for 6months? Also, do similar offers come up for 30$ recharges as well or just $45 only?

        • +1

          @bkoolrocks:

I'm not too sure if there are similar ones for the $30 recharge.

The 10% rewards card one, just buy them all at once. You can't stack the recharges though, you need to keep them and manually recharge every month.

      • +2

No it makes the $30 recharges $27. It was posted here that starting with the $45 8GB (double data being 16GB) kit will allow you to rollover 15GB of the data even if you drop down to the $30 ($27) recharge.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4109292/redir

  • +1

Good deal. But the risk will be to go over your "monthly data" and you will need to top up with the 2GB addons for 15$ when you run out. So it requires some discipline to stay within your monthly allowance. Not for everyone …

    • +1

It's not even monthly, it's 42GB for the whole year so lots more danger of blowing it all, then having to buy some add ons.

      • +4

Allows more flexibility, so you can go some months using more data than usual if you go some months using less. And it doesn't get wasted if you don't use up all of your monthly allowance.

But like you said, you have to keep monitoring it closely to make sure you don't use it all up early.

      • +2

Unless you are a data hog 3.5 GB is more than enough a month for average person

        • +3

Personally I struggle to use even 1GB/month, but apparently some people can't live without gigs.

        • Heheh … for the average person it will be a good deal. It's also nice to have the flexibility to use more when you need.

But think along a 16 year old snapchat and instagram addict teenager who spends 50% of the daytime on the phone … the 42GB data will be gone in 2-3 months (haha … please no comments except you know how to change this). So unfortunately that teenager has to stay on the M plan …

        • +1

@mini_wombat: They are the worse. Use up data like there's no tomorrow.
