Hopefully we shall see more on sale with this beast coming out.

    • +2

      Will Telstra be selling it?

      Looks like, yes…

      http://eftm.com.au/2017/01/netgear-and-telstra-launch-gigabi…

"The Netgear Nighthawk M1 will go on sale in February through Telstra for $350"

      • +1

$350 and you're still at the mercy of the network for speed.
That's probably more than I have spent on all my wireless broadband devices combined…and I have a few.

        • $350 RRP. I'm sure we'll be seeing it on sale.

        • @Clear:

Yep might be interested then but probably not.

    • How many devices can connect to it simultaneously?

      • +1

        Up to 20.

        • nice…

        • 20 devices sharing a 1Gbit connection on a 20GB (or thereabouts) plan? That would be gone very quickly!

Hopefully Telstra announce bigger data allowances otherwise it would be just a tease.

        • @animal:

Would boost sim work in it? Hrmmm

        • +1

Boost sims work in other Telstra locked devices so I'd say it would.

    • I can't imagine the battery life on this thing.

Pocket Wifi battery life is already awful.

Netgear says up to 24 hours of battery life. I highly doubt it. Stream in HD and it will be gone in a few hours tops.

      • Just over 5000mAh. Supports Type-C fast charge so a power bank would do the trick.

        • That's a lot of extra things to be carrying with you just to have the internet.

        • @lostn: Ultrathin Xiaomi would do the trick.

  • Picked one up yesterday.

I swear everytime Telstra clear their mobile broadband devices i end up buying a new one.

    • +1

same with me, but I want a CAT6 unit. Nice thing with the USB units is you can use then as 4G back-up when copper broadband dies… plugged it into the TPlink router and fed the house, and you can use them in the car to keep the kids busy as most have wifi with the USB now, don't need a PC.

better than tethering with the phone and flattening that battery or letting it run hot.

    • How many mobile broadband devices do you have/need?

      • One. I leave the old ones in the office with a postit note saying 'FREE' on it.

        • Good to be your colleague……I paid $30 for a used one…..

dont forget to grab the Coles (Optus Network) simcard with that…
it's $20 sim pack for $10.. comes with 6GB of data starting from Wednesday (1/2/2017)

    • Will the Optus sim work in the Telstra MF910V 4GX Wi-Fi ? I thought it would be locked to Telstra network?

      • The product page says it's "Locked to Telstra", but if someone wants to be a guinea pig it would be awesome if it actually wasn't!

      • Can be unlocked for around $3 as per previous discussions.

        • +3

          Bought one.
Got an unlock code from the link above. Works with Voda SIM.
A couple of things that weren't intuitive:
          - to access the config page you must enter a password. This is not the network password, SIM password or anything else. The default is password It is mentioned in the green pamphlet that I ignored.
          - the config allows you to set up different profiles, e.g. Telstra and Voda. It wouldn't let me connect to the Voda profile until I made it the default.
          - The voda APN is live.vodafone.com

  • Serious question - why do people buy these rather than tethering to their phones?

    • Good question, the only reason why I would is if going away on holidays and found a better data deal then my phone could provide so would use another 4g hotspot.

    • I bought 3 Telstra $10 sims over the holidays for the kids to use in the car from Melbourne to Sydney. Each came with 6gb of data to use within 7 days. Once the data is gone, I threw the sim away. Way better deal than my current phone plan can do.

    • My wife has 10gb a month with Telstra and used 1. I have 12 with Optus and use about 15-20. I have one of these devices and a $5 a month sim that uses my wife's data.

      • +1

Tethering a phone is useful to use up a bit of data on your calls/data plan at the end of the month. The battery runs down quickly and gets hot in the process so a lot of tethering will shorten your battery life.

phones can be uncomfortable to use on calls when not mobile.

Phones don't generally have a port for an external antenna so speeds won't be great unless near a tower and anyway dongles and pocket wifi's generally give better speeds when compared like for like.

If like us your home broadband is mobile broadband it's somewhat inconvenient for others in the home if you're out and about with the only means to receiving internet.

        just a few (obvious) reasons.

    • Battery drain on your phone.

  • +1

Anyone recommend a cheap Telstra based plan with lots of data?
(as far as I know, only Aldi, Boost and Woolworths use Telstra LTE)

  • How is the battery life on these things ?? I have an old iPhone 5 that I buy various sims for and tether for the kids in the car. Problem is the battery dies so quickly.

    • why not plug it into power in the car using a cig lighter adaptor?

      • With 2 phones, 2 ipads plus another phone tethering - there is always something using the cig lighter.

    • It says 10 hours. Battery life (and a desire not to run down my phone) is one of the reasons I got one. Note the battery is not replaceable.

    • Guaranteed to be bad.

I have one of the 3G models without LCD screen and it actually runs out of battery when used at home (internet went out) even whilst charging while being used! And it started with a full battery. That means it's draining faster than it is being charged. I was using it like you would home broadband of course. Not just browsing web pages. But not going crazy on downloads either.

  • I can't seem to find these anywhere. I tried 3 Coles stores in Canberra with no luck. Tried to purchase online in ACT, NSW and VIC and Coles Online keeps saying the product is "not available in your region." Where are you guys getting them from?

    • Walked into Parramatta Coles, they only had 1

  • What size sim does it take?

    • +1

      Full size

  • • 3GB Included data

The sticker on mine says 2GB. I'll let you all know when I activate if I get 3GB. I remember someone mentioning on a previous deal for this at the same price that there were both 2GB (mainly TGG) and 3GB versions (mainly Coles).
