        • What profits when it all comes from the one place anyway?
I am not paying 45 dollars for a charger and lining the pockets of a tax avoiding overseas company

Sure I don't support cheap junk but the fact they charge exhorbant prices for accessories and cables (still raises my main point above anyway)

Think what you like, any company that charges a fortune for a cable / charger in my eyes are blatently ripping people off

Are you nuts bro? The way you can tell it's safe is just by looking and feeling it - haven't you been reading the comments above? You don't need pesky "certifications" and stuff!

If you want even more proof they said it looks and feels like it could be certified: do you need more than that? C'mon, seriously, it's the look and feel that tells you the most about how safe it is, just admit it!

  • +1

Decent quality but cheap, much better than these bunnings….

    • I have bought 2 of these for a year. The LED light both died.

  • So whats the verdict? needing something like this for next trip, my current "Australian Certified" 3 port powerboard is lacking any USB charge options so looking something like this.
Whats consensus regarding this particular product, jump on or not?

    • +1

Really doesn't matter. The construction of power boards is pretty simple, if you open them up they're pretty much just strips of copper. Not much that can go wrong really. The usb ports, on the other hand..

      • The usb ports, on the other hand..

Is the concern of USB ports dying? or killing the device attached? or Both?

On a trip I can handle the port dying, but not device.

        • +2

The ports could catch fire, they could send the full mains voltage through etc, short of dismantling and testing its anyone's guess.
Another example of a non certified USB charger http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/faulty-usb-phone-charger-blamed-fo…

Odds are nothing will go wrong but is it worth the risk?

        • +3

From what I've been able to put together, the risk with chinese stuff isn't so much it failing, it's that when it does fail (as everything does in time) that it doesn't fail-safe. In other words there's no allowances there for it to fail gracefully, so when it dies its tends to explode/catch fire/zapedy zap zap

But that's generic stuff. Xiaomi is a cut above the rest, so that wouldn't stop me from buying this. Just don't talk on your phone as your charging it and you should be fine

        • +4

The bigger concern is that it kills the person.

I saw a teardown of this xiaomi power board on some blog, it looked better than most cheap USB chargers. You should be fine.

(Disclaimer: While I am an electrical engineer, I have not done a full safety analysis of this product)

          @abb:
Ozbargainers should do a fund~raise for ur xiaomi research here

        • +1

@melblover: If you buy me a spare one I'm quite happy to test it with a 10kV insulation tester :)

      • +5

They have a pic showing the guts of the board in the linked page. The unit appears robust and the USB ports adequately segregated from the mains section. Looks pretty good to this former sparky.

  • +1

I bought one and it' USB port doesn't have 2A output, the phone says slow charge but no problem with my adapter, look like not even 1A for charging.

    • +2

it is 2amps I've tested it. Perhaps you got a faulty one?

    • I got the same problem

  • Children always do not know what is dangerouss, sometimes they may insert finger or metal to the electric socket.

    Damn kids…

    • +3

And parents are always explaining how smart their kids are even though they act like complete and utter idiots.

  • +3

Wouldn't buy these because they aren't Australian certified. Not worth risking your insurance if something goes wrong.

"Honey, why isn't the insurance covering the damage?"
"Because I wanted to save a few dollars by buying a bunch of Chinese powerboards… "

    • from ozbargain

    • NOT because it is made in China!! Just check how many things you have are made in China!

  • $14.85 charged on ANZ card coz of shitty 3% conversion fee. Checkout in AUD for cheaper price… Quite sure they bill $14.53 in AUD then.

    • Ozbargainers should all have 28 degrees or bankwest zero plat cards. No conversion fee.

      • I don't believe I earn enough as a student for such a card, never really looked into it though.

        • Oops I guess I assumed too much. Once upon a time the 28 Degrees card wasn't platinum and you could get one with a $1k limit. Now the minimum is $6k so as a student you might not be able to get one. I got mine ages ago and the limit on it is only $3.5k

        • @Xastros: I earn enough over the span of a year (due to contract/temp work over Christmas/New Years/etc + a little sustained work year round), though I'm unsure how income is calculated for such purposes (ie do they average out last 3/6 months?) and don't really want to bother risking it tbh. I'm pretty happy with ANZs 3% rate - it's quite decent as is.

As with $1k limit, I'd be easily eligible for this… Though yeah, nah, sadly 28 Degrees is $6k+ limits now.

      • How does Citibank Visa Debit fare relatively speaking?

  • +1

Similarly looking 3 pin plug, but upside down, the wire is pointing up. Also the pins aren't insulated.

  • +3

TIL that China electrical power point is that same prongs as Australia but upside down.

    • haha TIL as well

    • +1

And slightly thinner. They also use the US type so you'll find power points to have one of the 2 or both in China.

  • +2

Awaiting bigclive to tear this down and approve. Otherwise I'll just use my Ikea USB charger.

  • I'm sure your insurance company watches these posts

  • +4

I feel like I see Xiaomi's post everyday, and to be honest, the price is not nearly a bargain.

  • Think that I will wait for another USD $8.99 special.

  • -6

Not certified for us in Australia so casting my first down vote

    • +5

Now all you need to do is make your first post and you've ticked all the boxes.

    • +2

      First down vote? You sure?

      What about:

Geez you're harsh! Cut the dude some slack - that was a practice vote to see what it feels like being a negger whereas this is the first real one…

  • Specs say "100 - 220V full voltage range", can I plug this in Aus 240V source and use it for 100V American appliances?

    • -1

No. it's 250v output (but I would call it 240v).

I think it takes power from your mains between 100-220(240) volts, but outputs it at the 240v. (does this mean it has an inbuilt stepup transformer?

    • +2

Input will be the same as output. The 100-240v is purely the specification for the power supply to the USB ports.

So yes, in theory you could use this in America too, just ensure all your devices are rated for the correct voltages. Most laptop and phone charges work on 100-240, so will happily work anywhere internationally.

    • My intention is to use this for my American 110V Bosh charger in Australia without a transformer, I guess the answer is a big NO NO?

      • +3

Depends, do you like to use the bosch charger as a smoke machine?

  • Ozbargain is so weird.. this post has so many up votes compared to the previous and cheaper deal from only back in Christmas :/ Is it because it's OP's first post?

    • +1

No cos everyone was on holiday!

      • +1

A true ozbargainer still checks ozbargain on holidays!

    • +2

There were probably so many deals being posted around that time it probably got lost in the crowd and pushed too far from the front page to be noticed readily is my guess.

    • +1

Yes, I noted this too…… I think if you get a few quick positive votes, this often snowballs into a highly rated deal. Likewise, get a few detractors in the first few comments can often stop a deal in its tracks.

  • Thanks OP , Ordered 1 white.

  • Just ordered some. Paypal gateway failed. So tried Mastercard and that failed too with website errors. Too hard to be bothered now.

    • Hmm got one item paid by paypal now. Crappy cart and merchant gateway system.

  • +1

Has anyone received their item yet? Mine still states pending shipment.

    • +2

strange that you haven't received your order from china within 10 days.

  • In my order notes I told them to cancel my order if it's not an AU power plug, they did.

  • Anyone receive theirs yet? Mine says it left Hong Kong for Australia on the 4th of March. :(

  • just received mine today, seems nicely made.
