HPM Handy Man Powerboard and Extension Lead - Value Pack $59 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store/ OnePass) @ Bunnings

650

I was perusing the web for an RCD power bank as I do some electronic repairs at home. I stumbled upon this small gem. The powerboard itself goes for $75.24 and the extension cable $14.53 both at bunnings. If you google this pack a similar pack shows up at Mitre 10 which has the $30 powerboard bundled instead. I strolled into Bunnings Rothwell today and there were about 30 of these at the back (used the Bunnings app to locate). I double checked and they are definitley have the $75 power board in there.

Why on earth does this powerboard seem to have great big plug spacing when power tools never have large power bricks. Yet I can't get a domestic powerboard with big plug spacings despite most appliances having oversized power bricks rollseyes

    • +3

Plenty of domestic powerboards with one or two wide-spaced outlets

      • +3

One or two doesn't cut it. One long strip with half a dozen widely spaced ports should be kinda obvious as an item that would sell great

I wish the makers of fat adapters would make them not so fat.

        • You can get short 15cm extension cables for that. Extra cost, sure.

There's other cable options - this was just the first hit.

          • @redpen: Love this idea but so overpriced. If I could buy a 10pk of those for $20, I would in a heartbeat

            • @outlander: I reckon there's cheaper options on Ali for example, and you don't always need a whole powerboard worth of extensions. But yeah, 2 cables for 16 is a bit much.

Some bricks seem to have extra plastic bits on the side, made just so you cant fit them next to each other on aboard. For years I haven't found out WHY!?

      • +1

        I just snip them off.

        • often they are quite substantial bits of plastic and would need a hacksaw or a grinder to remove.

          • @ripprind: Decent nippers will manage. I use Knipex bolt end cutting nippers (61 01 200).

      • +1

I've always assumed the plastic 'fins' are to allow some air flow around the power plug/brick and thus avoid the possibility of several close fitting plugs getting too warm.

        • that would make sense but mostly these are very low power devices, providing up to 24W of power max.

      • Engineering requirements to meet standards..

Sometimes that is for toughness. Other times it’s to deal with manufacturing (tolerances).

Having talked to folk in the manufacturing business, the constraints these things are built to are amazing.

All my ryobi chargers have big power bricks.

Though the angled orientation of the pins probably negates most of the spacing benefit.

      • That's a dust cover. The cover rotates and underneath it's normal.

  • This deal is tempting but trying to figure out a use case for this

      Cosplaying a tradie?

Just add hard hat> Village People impersonation.

    • Pressure washer. Several of them.

  • Nice find!
Want one but I can't really find a good enough excuse to buy it

  • They got on to it? No longer available :(
edit ; Now its back again

  • Got one. Also needs a reel for a longer extension lead.

What am I missing here- what makes this any difference from any other power aboard besides being bright yellow?

    (Serious question)

    • +1

Built in RCD device in the socket head

    • The sockets have little rotating covers that keeps dust out as well.

    • -1

I don't know what RCD is either. ai said a lot but from what I get it's like a circuit breaker switch you have in your electrical boxes outside the home.

    • +3

You are missing the fact that people here are dumb as f

You can buy standalone RCD plugs for $35
A place called Mabeldirect even has them for $20 with free shipping

  • Any benefits to having an RCD in one of these if your house has RCD's on the circuit?

    • not an expert but I think for tradies and high power tools. like e.g. someone is using high power tool, the extension cable falls and another tradie cuts it by accident with the saw they were using? extra safety?

    • None really if your house has RCD breakers.

Not every house does. Many still don’t have breakers at all (just fuses).

Sometimes the benefit is this might trip the powerboard RCD but hopefully before (also) tripping the house RCD - which is much more inconvenient.

Many houses may have RCDs on some circuits but not others..

There’s a lot of safety situations where there’s a reason to have an RCD “close” and visible rather than relying on a (sub)board.

      🤷🏾

I think this is better.. alot more tidiier and easy 2 put away.. best of all, its chepa - $24.97
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/cordtech-7m-4-outlet-home-office…

I got the 10M version of this with 2 x USB @3.4A for $29.99, i think its a promo item and was sitting in a box on the isle.

    • I believe that one has no RCD.

    • Be careful of those reels. - make sure to retract the full reel before using it.

      • I thought you need an iron core for magic to happen? Is this setup dangerous at 2000W?

  • +1

Good in places where you are unsure whether there is an RCD and also for working with diesel generators.

  • is there anything similar with individual switches?

  • +1

This is a great buy for anyone using an inverter with either a portable battery or generator.

Using 230V in this way often (I assume) lacks the protection you'd normally get from a switchboard RCD on mains power.

I was at bunnings today and saw that the price is now $39 (no special ticket). Same price online too for VIC at least

    • Yep, was just about to post similar. $39 in WA (Balcatta store)
