Aldi 500GB 2.5" Pocket HDD - $45; Possibly a Run-out of a Product at One or a Few Stores Only

590

I am not sure if this is Nationwide. I got it from the Minto, NSW store.

The 500GB 2.5" Medion drive is $45 at ALDI. I was told this when I failed to get the 1TB today. I did not ask how long the price lasts for.

Looks like a good price to me. Next cheapest 500GB is around the $65 mark.

The drive is USB powered. More details about the drive can be found here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/19669

I have attached the receipt for confirmation.

mod - added a bit more detail to the title, now that it doesn't seem to be available at all stores

  • VERY good price. Waiting to hear more, I will also check my Aldi tomorrow and report back. Though I'm not expecting my local one to have any.

  • I'll refrain from voting until someone else can confirm the price.
    But that's an absolute bargain!

    • don't know why someone neg'd that as that's what I'm doing, I'll even it up.

  • Do they ship?

    • Aldi don't ship

    • +4

      Err..Aldi is a supermarket…

      • some supermarkets do ship, but not Aldi

        • Local delivery and shipping by post are slightly different :) Unless you really mean there is a supermarket that can send items through the mail?

  • Damn that's cheap. Good score. That must be a PB, I've never seen one cheaper than that.

At this rate it won't be long before these 500GB drives start showing up on the COTD freebie treasure hunts!

  • Whats a PB?

    • Personal Best, but we might even have a WR on our hands here!

  • an internal one for that price would have been nice too

    • errrr buy it and open the case…ta da its internal…and warranty who cares its $45.

    • can't you make it internal? (by voiding the warranty)

      edit: too late

  • maybe asking for the drive first may help. The drives at Minto were in the stock area (not accessible). The staff may not know of the $45 price.

    • I beleive all reductions on special items are set by store managers according to some guidlines (time on sale, max % off marked price) on a store by store basis.

  • few hours back I went to Aldi to get the 1TB external hdd, which was sold out.
I swear I saw that medion 500GB 2.5 hdd inside the shelf with a price tag of 69$.
and there was no "reduced price" on it.

    • Same at the Eltham (Victoria) store :(

      Ozzie

  • Wow, great price. I drove past Minto, and if I'd known, I would have picked one up! And I would have opened it up for the drive inside as well. :)

  • I was sure this had $99 price tag @ Chadstone. Who knows it might scan at $45. Might try it tommorow. I was lucky to get one of the 1TB in the last box.

    • Saw one a couple of weeks ago at a Central Coast ALDI. Yep, it was <i>still</i> marked 99.

  • Not nationwide. Stupid backwards WA haven't got Aldi STILL!

    • Shame. I didn't know.

    • +4

You need to allow Sunday trading before aldi

    • +2

Aldi is unable/unwilling to open in WA because of very strict laws relating to ownership of retail stores - to open normal hours you need to be a WA owned company.

      • Interesting! Never knew that, thanks for clearing it up. It seemed very odd they weren't expanding there yet.

Here on the Central Coast of NSW I now have 7 stores in a 15KM radius - possibly the most concentrated area of Aldi stores in the country?

        • Indeed. I have noticed that its very very easy to get to an aldi here on the Central Coast. Although, to be fair, the ACT has its fair share of them too. But yes, they are a spread a bit farther apart.

      • Thats partly because of the Coles/Woolworths duopoly we have here. I think pretty much every other supermarket is allowed to open Sunday. I would have thought the gov't would be happy to amend the rules to get Aldi here.

Things are not so bad in WA. Didn't we have the first Oz Ikea, back in the 80s ?

        • Same duopoly everywhere else in Australia… Perth is no different. I grew up in Perth and now live in rural backwater Queensland… and I can shop any evening I want, and on Sundays :)

  • do you know what HDD it uses? Seagate? WD?

    • +2

      Seagate

      • which model
i just got a wd scorpio blue for $60 was that still worth it (like performance better or something) also 500gb

  • Nice one OP, cheapest I picked up a 500Gb 2.5" drive was the Iomega from Lapy King for $59!

  • +2

I thought Aldi has noational pricing policy…

    http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/service/national_pricing_2.ht…

Same price everywhere except fresh fruit, vegetables and regional bakery lines.

    • That's for regular/advertised prices. This is a clearance/marked down item so probably at Store Manager's discretion depending on stock levels, space needed, etc.

      • doesnt show any mark down notations on the OPs receipt. having said that, i didnt see the unit at all at 2 aldis, but only just read that he said to ask them to check the back as they were not on display.

        • I've bought items at Aldi at regular and subsequently a reduced price. The receipts only show the current price in the system not a former/original price - That is usually only on the shelf tag.

    • As Daydream stated it does not apply when they mark down items. This purely goes on the store manager's discretion and often might be related to how much stock is left, what other items are coming in etc.

  • I tnink i will go check it out tomorrow, and sell my Seagate 500gb 3.5 external. Don't really need a usb powered one, cause i just use for back-ups anyway but it still has its advantages, and for $45, why not.
Might call b4 hand, causd by the sounds of it, there's no gaurantee that my local store has that price.

  • Is Seagate HD reliable?

    • some models are reliable.
      some have not been reliable.

As with most things, the cheaper option is usually the less reliable option.

  • The stores I went to were selling the 500GB pocket drives for $79 because the 1TB drives were sold out… must be up to the individual store manager.

  • Anybody know the brand of the Aldi drive?

    • did you read the post? 'more details can be found here…'

      • -1

"Is a Hitachi. I bought one for $119 about 3 months ago from ALDI. It was a reduced price from the advertised selling price back then."

This is ozbargain, not ozreadathon. :)

        • The ones I got a month ago were Seagates

  • Both are sold out at Aldi hampton park…:(

    • Also sold out at Aldi Parramatta :(

  • im going to minto now- checking will be back

    • ggkfc, did you get the same price at Minto?

  • as anyone found this at that price?

  • dont want to neg this but this morning i went to Aldi in freezing cold..(canberra city store). The guy at the counter had one, scanned 4 $75…. guys, in summary, prices depends on the store..

    • +1

That's the reason I never +1 this deal. But likewise not worthy of neg vote either, just depends where you live I guess.

  • -2

If there are only a couple of units available Australia wide then this is wasting everyone's time it is not a bargain. For the couple of people who save $20 - whoopee.

  • it's a deal for lucky man.

  • +1

This drive is still $99 at Aldi in Oxley QLD when I checked this morning.

    • hi lo200

Did you try to get a price match?

  • Not available at that price at ALDI in my suburb and it's still $69. Shame they don't sell it for $49 :)

  • Anyone tried to show that 45$ docket and asked for a pricematch?

  • it was available at minto but ran out yesterday, 2hrs after it started..

    • damn. I must just be lucky then.

  • Anyone able to get this price in VIC?

    • a friend told me that his local (Vic) store has them ticketed at the $99, but actually scanned at $69. No $45 unfortunately.

  • Seems like two models in the stores. The older is labelled as Vista (ours has Hitachi inside), whereas the newer is labelled as Win7 (with Samsung inside). Both old and new seem to work ok on 1 x USB port (not like rubbish Maxtors). Toombul cleared all their ones at $49.95 (assumed older), and Chermside has plenty of the newer at $59. Note: they have progressively been $99, then $79. Suggest people hold off till $39. At the moment, $59 seems a little high….

  • Went to Aldi at Minto on friday missed out by a day and missed my train home. However the employee told me that they rang up multiple stores in the area but said they were also sold out, so this might be in a handful of areas.
Great Deal nevertheless, next best I saw was about 80$ not on sale.

  • Is there a better deal than the Aldi 500GB for $69? I can't get the $59 or $49 deal at my local Aldi store.
