I picked one up not a week ago at full price, does anyone know if EB Games do anything in this regard?

    • +2

Could always return the one you have and repurchase it (at another store, if you wish to avoid potential dirty looks) if you haven't used it?

      • +28

Or if you've opened it, buy new one at lower price and return unopened item to eb with old receipt.

EB games will do a full refund for any purchase if you change your mind within 7 days… iv'e clocked a few games with my nephew and returned them within the week for a full refund. this is one of many reasons why digital media blows…

What are these like? Any good?

Steam Link is fantastic if you can do Ethernet on each side of it, very low latency screen mirroring so you can play your PC games in your bed/living room using a gamepad.

Steam Controller is horrible, I got one from an Amazon deal because I was a believer in it but it's just not good for anything. The PS4 controller with touchpad is much more useful.

      • I purchased a Powerlink which allows for LAN via powerlines. If you don't live in an old place with crappy wiring it allows you to connect via ethernet for minimal lag.

        Either way steam links great

        • eh.. found out I had bad wiring by getting one of those adapters. Pretty disappointing

Do you know how the LAN would work? Would it still be sending the signal through the internet or just through the wires? Modem to pc is bad but pc to lounge room might be alright

        • @iLoveYourFace:

Your steam link technically only uses your local home network. Any internet required comes from the source pc. If your connection on the pc sucks than that problem will flow through to the usability of the Steam Link

      • Completely agree with you on both the controller and Steam Link. Steam link has been great. Playing games like Rocket League with Xbox 360 controllers from another room on the TV with no noticeable lag, and good quality picture.

The controller on the other hand is a failure in my opinion. I see what Valve tried to do, but I don't feel like I have anywhere near the control that I do with a normal controller.

Had both since release in the US, so they may have changed the hardware slightly.

I was considering a Steam Link but ended up getting a 12m flat ribbon HDMI cable to run under doors from my PC to my living room (use use with a wireless Xbox controller), so consider the distance you'll be using and whether there's a way to just directly connect your PC to your TV without needing to worry about lag, image quality, etc.

        • can you please link the cable? :)

        • +2

@191919: It was this one at a slightly longer length: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Cables/HDMI/57957-SP-2F-…

You can probably find cheaper but I was having a PC shipped from scorptec at the same time. The only thing to check with long HDMI cables is the AWG rating (this one is 26AWG), with lower ratings better for signal transmission. Doesn't affect image quality or anything, it just means the wire is stiffer which makes sure there's still enough signal bandwidth from end-to-end. Matters more with low-power devices that can't push as much current over long distances.

        • @AXiS: thanks, i appreciate it! :)

      • +2

Different view on the controller, it is the most accurate controller ever made, and IMO the best controller ever made.
You need to put in the time to retrain muscle memory if you already use a controller, it is also the most configurable controller ever made.

        • +1

Seconding this, it took a while for me to get used to but I found it much better than a standard controller for FPS games. It's not as good as a keyboard and mouse of course, but being able to flick the pad for quick movements and using the two stage triggers for aiming and firing with one finger was fantastic.

        • +1

@Alzori: I find the controller to be better for FPS games also but I can't see it as better in any other genre. It feels like a waste of money to me. It's absolutely horrendous for platforming and fighting games. Although it is good for FPS games I still find the keyboard/mouse a million times better to use and just sit a keyboard/mouse on one of those wooden TV trays

      • Can you use the touchpad bit on the PS4 controller to move the mouse pointer on the steamlink?

    • The steamlink is good. Works well over a wired link for me. You can game with a controller or keyboard and mouse, but I have only tried with the steam controller.

The controller feels nice. The mouse pad works alright, but is no comparison to a real mouse. They come with a dongle, but you can sync the controller to the steamlink without it by holding X and pressing the sync button. PS3/PS4 controllers will also sync without anything extra (pairing is done with a usb cable and then you are free).

If you already game with a controller it is great, but will probably take some getting used to if you are a kb/mouse user.

    • +1

I've read nothing but praise for the Steam Link.

The Steam Controller seems to turn almost everyone who uses it against it - at first. Many users who stick with it for a few weeks claim to have almost most mouse like control in FPS games which is far superior to using a normal controller.

  • Nice ;)

hah bloody hell; asked for this for Valentines day from the wife; and she ended up getting me the stream controller (for $89; takes a bit of getting used to; kinda miss the other thumb stick) great price drop and really keen to get both at this price; thanks very much OP would have missed it otherwise!

  • How would it be if streamed it over wifi from latop to the steam link, lag? Can i use Xbox 360 wireless controler?

    Thank you:)

    • There seems to be mixed reports for WiFi, but if you've got decent line of sight and a solid modem then sure why not.

    • I use Xbox 360 wireless with a dongle. Works like a treat no issues. I heard the box also works with Wii u pro controllers.

      • did you buy the ebay dongle or you have the original microsoft one? i have the ebay one and i remember when i used to use i had issues with drives for it, it would and wouldnt connect/recognize the controller from time to time :?

        • I can't comment on using an eBay receiver with a Steam Link but on the pc it would very occasionally change to unknown device in device manager. To fix it I would manually select the driver and not have issues again for months. However, I've always wondered if I would have the same issues on the Steam Link. It isn't as though I can do a manual install to fix it on a Steam Link

        • I am not too sure sorry. I bought it from the Microsoft store and I think it was sold as Xbox 360 wireless controller for PC. So it came with the recieve which attached to the link via usb

    • Why not just plug laptop into TV via HDMI? The Steamlink is more of a solution for gaming on the TV when your PC is a fair distance away.

  • Is it available in store at that price or only online?

    • You can do a Pickup@Store order, as per the website. So from that, it might be in-store as well.

    • +2

Just picked one up from my local store. Boxes on the shelf both labelled with sale stickers.

    • +1

Can also confirm, picked up one from my local. No sale stickers but rep behind the counter told me the correct price without looking it up.

  • +1

Great price for the Steam Link. For those in no hurry the controller is cheaper at Amazon

    • Sadly it really isn't, once you factor in shipping and conversion to AUD, it works out just slightly cheaper, without any kind of Australian warranty.

      • +1

It's $6 cheaper. That's a significant saving in my books. With Amazon reputation with warranty I have no problem sending them my money

  • If you're looking for the best in-home streaming solution then spend a bit more and get the Nvidia Shield. Using wired ethernet, I can stream my PC games at 4K resolution with HDR (as opposed to being limited to 1080p with Steam Link) to my LG OLED in my living room all without a hitch. Games like Shadow Warrior 2 and Resident Evil 7 look fantastic in 4K HDR!

    • +11

If money isn't a consideration it is definitely the better option but $282 isn't what most would consider a bit more. It is over 7x the price

      • Seeing as it has few moving parts I'd have no problems buying it second hand.

        • Cheapest one on eBay and it's not cheap. It is also auction so who knows what it will go for

      • +3

Not to mention exclusive to those with a Geforce…

      • I picked it up for $180 delivered from Amazon over a year ago and it came with both the controller and remote. Keep an eye on Amazon they seem to have sales going on the Nvidia Shield quite regularly. I would also recommend getting the older model as opposed to the new Shield that just came out - has all of the features of the new Shield but you get more ports (including an SD card slot) and you might be able to pick it up at a decent discount. Yep you do need a Nvidia Geforce card for Gamestream to work. Nvidia also recently added native support for Steam so you can also stream your entire Steam library in big picture mode just like Steamlink. I personally prefer using Nvidia's Gamestream as I can stream games in 4K HDR.

    • I agree with you about resolution - can you still use Steam Controller when you stream like this?

Also last i checked this is only an option for Nvidia video card owners of a minimum version (gtx 780 or something?).

  • Just ordered mine for store pickup, cheers OP!

Cheers, just what my girlfriend wanted for Valentine's. And by girlfriend I mean my right hand.

    • +1

Steam Link ain't called Steam for nothing!

  • Looks like it no longer is available. Can't find the Steamlink product listing on the EB website

  • Thanks OP, bought one somehwat recently, now have a second Steam link - great price! Cheers.

  • Thanks OP. Got the last one at Box Hill

    • heh…at box hill too, guy told me the same thing!

      • lol they playin you guys

  • Thanks got the last one at my local. I can't believe I've never heard of this before.

Looks really good and now I can dust off my wireless controllers that have been collecting.

    • Got confirmation an hour ago. Ready to pick up.

    • You may need a wireless reciever to have them communicate with your PC.

  • The controller has definitely been cheaper at Ebgames, not sure about the steam link.

Personally I love the steam controller but I'm in the minority. It takes some setting up for each game, and can take a while to get used to, but playing a third person shooter for example, aiming with the trackpad and then pulling down a paddle to enable the Gyro for precision adjustments just feels great.

Wish the main 4 buttons weren't so far into the middle of the controller though.

  • I think it will take a lot of getting used to the controller. I bought one from Amazon for Xmas but only used it once (and it was horrible). I plan to take it for a spin on Portal 2. Definitely a steep learning curve but well worth it from what Ive heard.

    • Personally from what I've seen it's best to use it to play keyboard and mouse games on the couch.

Can't really play cities skylines or civ well with a regular controller.

  • I already have the Nvidia Shield — is there any good reasons why I should also get the Steam Link ??

  • Aaaand as usual EB Games happily take my online order, withdraw the money from my account only to message me back a couple of hours later saying OOPS we don't have any stock and we'll refund you your money in 4 days.

Every goddamn time, when will I learn to stop trying to buy things online from EB Games.

  • Looks like they are doing 1 unit per store, grabbed the unit at Castle Towers!

    Cheers OP

  • Can you steam-link things like MS Word/Excel?
    How about dolphin/pcsx2 emulators?

Would like to work in the living room sometimes without moving the desktop. And the PS2/Gamecube look like *** on my TV, compared with the up-scaled emulators.

    • Steam link does not support this feature

    • I've "Steam linked" non-steam games before, however that was using another PC with steam installed as the "receiver". Perhaps not possible with an actual Steam Link device. I've ordered a Steam Link just now to play FIFA (non Steam game), plan to use an XBOX360 controller + receiver. Will post back here with what I find.

    • You can think of steamlink as a very specific desktop mirroring system. You can minimise steam and you will see your desktop and everything runs as if you are in front of your PC.

As for emulators, you can add "non steam games" into steam. So if you already have the emulators on your PC you can add them to your steam library and run them as if you purchased it on Steam.

    • Might want a chromecast for that usecase

  • The store I ordered from is still showing it in stock even though they only have one and I got my email about it being ready for pickup. Should I be worried about them giving it away before I can get there this Arvo?

    • +3

Usually they get put aside with your receipt attached, doubt they would go ahead and resell. Easier to tell the person they have no stock than go about cancelling and refunding your order etc.

    • +1

I ordered one from my local store. Received my pickup email. Told a friend who ordered from same store, then they cancelled his order even though it said 1/1 in stock. So im hoping online orders are protected. But if they dont put the item aside in store then yeah this probably could happen.

    • +3

Pretty sure 1/1 means the single item you ordered is available. Not how much stock they have. If you ordered 3 things it may have said 2/3 meaning one of the items wasn't available but two are at that store. If that makes sense. @universe

      • I get what you are saying. I hope that is what they do.

        • +1

Definitely is.. I picked up 3 for friends and myself and they have plenty in stock (at swanston st melb)

  • Hi Guys,

I picked one up in Merrylands and i think they have more as there were 2 empty boxes on the shelf. For $36 why not :)

  • Awww yiew! Glad I waited until this weekend to buy.

    • PS: Got the last one of each at Castle Plaza, Adelaide

  • I bought one (steam link) - ozbargain impulse buy lol
Can you multiple steam link in the same household on 2 TV's? i.e. if I bought 2 steam links for 2 TV's.

    • Simultaneously to 2 TVs/Steamlinks? No.
      Different times? Possibly.

    • I can't see why you couldn't steam link 2 separate accounts on 2 separate computers to 2 separate TVs.

  • Was reading the product info, and got a little confused.
What's the difference between a Xbox One or 360 Wired Controller and Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows? I bought a Xbox 360 Controller to play some controller-friendly steam games on Windows years ago, and can't remember at all which one it is or the difference between them, if any.
Could someone give me a bit information?

    Cheers

    • Xbox One Controller - New one controller / wireless / battery
360 Wired - is hard wired and does not have a battery plugs in by USB or that weird circle adaptor into the 360
360 Wireless for windows - wireless / battery, dongle provided for wireless connectivity between the steamlink / pc and controller.

      • Thanks! So it is the 360 Wired.
        Getting steam link then.

        • make sure the end of it is USB, or you have the receiver for it. Should be good.

        • @starKz: it is. Thanks for reminding.

  • Thanks, always wanted one of each.

  • Thanks. Picked up a steam link in Coffs Harbour late morning today. I think they possibly had one more in stock behind the glass shelf. Easy setup via ethernet. Image quality looks pretty good, tried it with a pinball game to test for lag and very minimal.

  • Thanks ordered one for pick-up from St Clair.

  • Good price IMO.

Are they going to release a steam link 2? Maybe 1440P??

Id buy one of these myself but I end up having to run a 10 Metre HDMI cord to my computer screen just to use my xbox.

  • Awesome price on the steam link, just ordered one. Thanks!

  • Thanks. Bought one.

  • When I bought both the steam link and the controller they were the same price. How is EB charging nearly double for the controller compared to the steam link?

  • Great deal op, picked up a steam link.

  • Thanks, grabbed a steam link.

Any experiences with controllers? I'm probably going to grab a 'Xbox One S Controller' from eb and use it over bluetooth.

    • I'm fairly certain any of the Xbox controllers are a safe bet. I use a 3rd party wired Xbox 360 controller myself and I have no complaints. Bought it used from EB games in fact (2 for $18).

  • Thanks picked up the last two at the Caloundra store.

  • Can anyone comment if that Razer Naga for $57 is a good buy?

  • got the "last one" at south morang, despite being 3 on the shelf and the dude walking out with a not held for order stock initially.. theres plenty around despite what the online store stock says.

great little unit. can now play bf1 in the lounge, and it accepts BT devices.. the missus will be happy as my late night BF1 sessiosn wont be 1 room away anymore.
