  • Anything that isn't limited after watching a video on YouTube??

I'm going to Japan later this year and want something with a bit more speed

check out the bmobile visitor sim. 30 days validity, 5gb, 4G, around 45-50 AUD. You can buy it in a shop over there, or have it waiting at an airport for you assuming you arrive during post office operating hours.

      • Have I misunderstood, that would be less than the DoCoMo plan A 2gb/day? Or is that 5gb/day?

        • It's 5 GB total on b-mobile.

It doesn't specify clearly, but I think you will find DoCoMo plan A is 2GB total, once you have exceeded 2GB you get limited to 200kbps.

  • Planning trip for 21days. Most places we're staying supply a complimentary pocket wifi and we're not heavy data users anyway. We want a sim for light data usage (200mb/day is plenty) mostly for being able to use Google maps and to communicate if separated.
Can anybody recommend a sim for that? Is one of these Sims good for that purpose?
    Cheers

    • This is the sim that you can have.
      5GB for 21days.
      price is about $40.

    • I just came back from Japan few days ago. Would recommend going to Yodobashi Cameras or BIC cameras and get a tourist SIM card

  • Hi OP!

Will you get any stock of the Plan A DoCoMo cards with late November/December expiry? Me and my brother are going for 2 weeks mid November and are pretty data hungry so these will be a great fit given the price.

    • Thanks! Docomo sims generally only have a 2-3 month expiry from when they are released for sale, so you'll need to check back in September or so.

We'd recommend the SoftBank sims if you need a longer dated expiry.

  • 128kb/s?!?!? It'll take like 10 mins for a Google search. More like some misleading bs to make the simcards have "unlimited" internet

    • You're right, but that's how they're marketed by SoftBank. Suggest you only rely on the daily quota which is unthrottled.

That said, 128kb/s is probably still more than sufficient for whatsapp/messaging.

I went to Japan last December and got a sim for my iPad from http://travelsimsdirect.com for $60+$2 postage. I got the 15day 4G unlimited plan. I was pretty happy with it but to be honest I used my iPhone on vodafone roaming more. I was there 12 days, so vodafone cost me about $50. I didn't use it every day all day and it's $5 for 24hours, not calendar days so some days if you start the 24hr in the afternoon then its still on the same 24hr period the next morning.

I did have problems with vodafone at first. I can't remember what it was but I had something on the iPhone turned off (maybe data roaming?). I even reset my iPhone but it still didn't work.

The TSD worked straight away. But I think I would have been fine with 200mb/day deals and not unlimited. You don't really use that much data to look up google maps or check train time tables.

    • Good if Roaming on Plan $5/d

Expensive Roaming Add-On on Prepaid eg longest is $35 for 7days from date recharge purchased (250MB, 60min calls in/out, 60SMS) or (just 500MB).
      3 day $25 (half 7 day inclusions).
Free to sms to keep recharging with Add-Ons as needed.
Prepaid is billed per calender day in Australia for 3 or 7 continuous days - expiry period for the Add-on will begin from midnight Australia Eastern Standard Time on the day of purchase

    • So for an extra $12 and $10 postage you can have the same sim, plus an extra day, but unlimited from this company?
I'm looking for one for my 7 day trip, but I'm not sure if 2gb will be enough.

I just had a look at my vodafone bill and I averaged about 60MB/day. I only went over 200MB on my last day, 240MB. I think that was while I was watching youtube at the airport (airport wifi is VERY slow).

So unless you don't have wifi at your accommodation or you don't plan on torrenting you should be fine with 200MB/day.

The good thing with vodafone is you can call and txt as well and it's all included in your normal plan. I was sceptical but it was brilliant. I have no idea if the person receiving my calls got charged extra though…

        • Great, thanks for your advice, very helpful.

Thanks op. Purchased some Softbank ones. Seemed pretty reasonable price comparing to other services and 200mb a day should be enough for some googling and navigation. (I hope).
Will put a feedback over here when I'm back early next month.

    • Thanks for giving us a try!
