Wait. Aren't all Ryzen processors unlocked? I think they are.

If they are, better wait for the reviews to come out and see if the lowest end 8-core chip can be overclocked to the same level as the flagship. If so, no reason to get the higher priced model.

    • +1

They're unlocked but as I understand it X versions do automatic overclocking. (I edited the description because it was confusing).

    • +1

      Yeah they're all overclockable.

    • +4

the x versions have a tdp limit of 95w compared to 65w. the chip will throttle once you reach that limit regardless. there isn't a lot of detail on how it works right now, there aren't even details on motherboards. it's probably best to wait and see how the overclocking works before jumping in because the non-x chips might oc quite well with good cooling.

      • +12

Processors aren't typically power limited. They have a rated TDP at stock, but can go way over when overclocked.

        • well the only thing that differentiates them so far is the xfr feature and tdp rating. there is no other information available. so one can only assume that the tdp ratings are hard limits.

        • +3

@neu11: There's speculation that the X variants will be higher binned processors, so you shouldn't assume something like that.

        • @neu11: Eh.. actually, from AMD's history.. and the amount of old AMD processors still holding OC world records, I would lean towards the opposite of what you are suggesting re: power limits.

  • +7

Note that the version for non-overclocking derps is about 100 bucks cheaper …

The only difference between the 1700 and 1700X is that the former doesn't have XFR; auto-overclocking ability.
AFAIK, the 1700 is unlocked so you can still overclock manually to your hearts content. So technically, the "version for non-overclocking derps" is $100 more expensive, as it is done for you…

    edit: beaten to it :(

    • +1

The phrase is a bit of a confuser.
non-"overclocking derps"= people who know how to overclock, but are derps
"non-overclocking" derps = people who don't know how to overclock, and are derps

Depending how you read it, the "version of the cpu" for "non-overclocking derps" is either $100 more expensive or $100 less expensive.

tl;dr If you know how to overclock, save $100 by getting non-x

    • The other difference is the base clock of the 1700 is only 3.0GHz and only boosts to 3.7GHz - all other overclocking will have to be done manually.

  • +2

where are the 4core 8 thread chips for <$100AUD? keen to see what AMD has to tackle the G4560…

    • +2

only 3 CPUs are out right now, their flagships. More to come.

  • +15

    Aussie Pre order prices :)

    $699 AMD Ryzen 7 1800X
    $569 AMD Ryzen 7 1700X
    $469 AMD Ryzen 7 1700

    • +13

I feel as though I should take away my +1 on this deal considering local stock is an extra 3.8%.

      • +4

The differences is less than the GST amount, not that you need to pay it, but still that is crazyness

    • +1

put this up as a deal

      • someone else did and some people are not happy :)

  • +2

Seems expensive on face value, never a great idea to buy PC Parts when they release anyway…. even more so a new chipset.

I'd be suggesting to stay away till prices settle.

    • +4

      That's because it's equivalent to Intel's ~$600+ models. Supposedly.

And CPU prices have rarely changed much over the course of their shelf life, at least while Intel has (had? - remains to be seen) a stranglehold on the market. I wouldn't be too optimistic about price cuts.

      • +4

Maybe so, but to buy now before reviews, that'd be pretty foolish. Intel will inevitably drop their prices to smash them again anyway. Such is the problems with a dominant market share.

        • +2

Agreed. There was a post on reddit today claiming the $500USD Ryzen chip beats out the $1100 Intel equal, which is huge news if true. But there's no good buying into speculation and leaks yet.

        • -8

Benchmarks are already out, Intel will only drop their prices minimally. Is it worth waiting 3-6months to save $50-100? I guess so if you are living in poverty

        • +1

          @psylence:
You call it being in poverty, I call it not being stupid and waiting for actual reviews.

If these smash Intel CPU's, they won't drop minimally, they'll drop them notably to smash AMD again (unfortunately for the sake of healthy competition)

        • -5

@scuderiarmani: They don't need to because the majority of the users will continue to buy Intel due their longstanding image and marketing technique, hell the average user hasn't even heard of AMD let alone checking benchmarks you noob

      • I agree that it's a big supposedly. There is a little too much hype at the moment for a product that hasn't been probably tested or reviewed yet. Yesterday's press event with benchmarks was still a PR event.

        • Yeah. Tbh I'm skeptical. I'm planning a build at the moment, and will likely still go Intel. But we'll see, I guess.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness: Unless you need to build something in the next fortnight, there's nothing lost by waiting to see whether the hype is real.

        • @awaiko: Of course. I'm planning, not buying. Will probably be waiting for Vega anyway.

    • +37

To be fair theres been Ryzen buzz for months now.

      • +7

        Fools and their money.

    • +4

Not sure why you've neg'ed me, i'm just saying, this was the first time in my life i've actually brought a intel processor, just to try it, but after seeing this i wish i would waitied.

      • +15

What can we say? Should have done your research mate. As the other poster said, there has been hype about these chips for months. Same with the Vega graphics cards coming out soon.

Edit: Have you considered returning it?

        • He bought it just to try it though, that makes all the difference ;)

        • +1

I'm keen to see some Vega benchmarking

      • bought*

      • +2

Don't worry, the lack of Mini-ITX boards being showcased pushed me to go intel (needed the rebuild now, not in 6 months)…but I am still hoping Ryzen works out well. We need a STRONG AMD to put Intel back into gear

        • +1

Yep. the whole CPU industry needs to be kicked into gear. the <15% performance increase between Sandy Bridge and Kaby Lake (Clock for clock) is ridiculous. They havent really improved performance in 5 years since they have no competition.

    • +3

Have you installed it? You could return it and say, "I bought this for a friend. He already has one". Works at KMart. :P

But seriously, you might be better off with the Intel. Some things, like Wii emulation for example, are better on Intel than AMD. Not sure about this chip, but in the past, it's what the devs recommend.

      • +1

like Wii emulation for example, are better on Intel than AMD.

That's just because intel had way better single core performance. Ryzen changes that (hopefully).

      • +1

Thanks for all the advice, but @aim54x was correct i want a mini-itx case board and case so might stick it out with the 7700k

    • +2

I negged you for using 'brought' instead of 'bought'

  • +6

    itshappening.gif

Also, wait for benchmarks to show OC potential before ordering

    • +4

Yeah this is Ozbargain, guys, at least wait for LOTS of benchmarks, and prices to settle down, first…

      • +1

Tempted to pre-order a 1700X or 1800X but can wait for benchmarks and Intel response

  • +9

The NDA doesn't lift for a few more days, everyone should wait until they preorder imo

    • What NDA?

      • +1

NDA for benchmarks and reviews. Most of the screenshots on the internet are leaks.

        • I posted a leak below then!

  • +3

    Interesting - http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-1700X-Turbo…

Single Core the i7 7th gen (kabylake) is still better but multicore - this is better.

Good to see AMD making a comeback!

    • "Off 1 user benchmark" I would still wait

    • +21

so…fail because unproven? With NDA still ongoing until the 28th, it's definitely a fail because there's no concrete reviews out there yet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no AMD fanboy, but I'm running a 3770k and there's been no incentive for me to upgrade thus far from Intel apart from M.2.

So calling it a fail from the offset is massively ignorant and seems to show fanboy-ism (is that a word?).

    • most people are happy with what they have I say, especially when it fits in with dominant perceptions on quality.

    • +2

And the way you've determined it's a fail is…? Yep, thought so, you don't have one.

    • +1

      Salty much?

I guess tears can have that effect.

    • +4

Come on dude. If AMD succeeds you benefit from lower Intel prices as well.

    • Another comment fail.

  • +3

Excited to see Intel vs AMD again, great time to upgrade my Q9650.

    • +1

Q9650. I had an E8400 till last year.

I'm guessing your PC was built around the same time :')

      • +4

        I had a Q6600 until last year also :D

        • +2

I'm still on my Q6600, I feel like the time is right for a new PC now though…

      • +2

I'm still rolling with my E8400.

I might be biased, but it's still pretty good for general tasks in this day and age. (Obviously not for gaming)

      • +2

Lol, good to see fellow ozbargainers with Core 2 CPUs :D

I have Q9400 in another desktop and E6600 in my htpc too.

I have high hopes for Ryzen because it's designed by Jim Keller (AMD K7 K8, Apple A4 A5).

    • The pins are not an arbitrary number.

They are more like how many veins, arteries and neurons both the brain and the body need to communicate to each other.

    • +1

Rofl, no, it's not simply a licenced thing. A CPU is nothing without a chipset to support it, and they're very tightly coupled to eachother.

      • +1

back in the old days, amd and intels go into the same socket.

        • -2

Thanks for the Neg votes you bunch of angry beavers. It was. Question. Hate away.

        • +1

@j5ive: its like that when you ask unpaid computer people questions over the internet

  • +1

Hrmm so the same performance as the 6900k at a third of the price ? Might be enough to swap sides Except all the ssd octane stuff that needs intel to run but the vram is a long way away it seams.

    • +1

Supposedly the Octane stuff is fairly disappointing, at least for the first gen. Only available in 16GB and 32GB sizes, expensive, and not that much better than NVMe SSDs. It'll be a few years before it becomes relevant, IMO.

      • when the ram based versions coming out?

  • +11

I guess you could say AMD stocks will be Ryzen..

    • +4

more like they have been Ryzen for a while

    • They already did in 2016. There might be room left keep growing though.

Edit: Didn't read the first reply.

      • +1

ryzen ryzen and now have rzyen .. AMD stocks looking good

  • +8

It is only a $20 saving compared to buying locally - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/38089/amd-ryzen-7-1700x-…

Is it worth the $20 saving when local warranty is better? I know a saving is a saving but I'd prefer to spend a little extra to get local warranty if possible.

    • +1

No, thus you should retract your upvote :)

That said, it's a CPU, do they ever fail midlife?

  • AMD Ryzen 7 1800X Breaks Cinebench R15 Multi-Thread World Record – Overclocked to 5.2 GHz on All 8 Cores With LN2 Cooling

    http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-7-1800x-world-record/

    EXCITED!

But will still wait for the benches… and to evaluate best price-performance chip :)

    • +1

Does the Ryzen 7 1800X come with LN2 cooling kit?

    • +1

      paper talk
those guys have cooling that most of us have no access to

      • +2

Well if you aren't serious enough to get liquid nitrogen cooling, you deserve to play Battlefront at low res!

  • i think the vanilla 1700 will suit me just fine! not bad price for what you get, now what Motherboards are out therE?

    • check scorptec they have a bunch of MB's up on there website.

      • yeah saw that only 8 sata ports max, and too much gaming mother boards, might have to wait a bit.

        • +3

If you're using 8 sata ports it's time for a NAS or a micro server.

        • @Lukian:

nah, ssds , bluray drive, and a few smaller capactiy drives take up alot of space.

        • @Lukian:Some cases like the Fractal Define R5 support up to 8 HDDs and two disk drives

        • @Axelstrife:

hard drives are to expensive right now to go NAS as well……

        • +1

The limit of 8 SATA ports a problem? Whoa, seems like a lot to me.

I prefer my setup of one small low power consuming NAS/Media server that stores a lot of the data and focus my PC build on small and quiet.

          Each to our own.

  • +1

    I posted a better deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/293810
Hopefully people see it before making a purchase on amazon.

    • That is more expensive and is the local RRP

  • +9

Ryzen up, back on the street. Did my time, took my chances…

    • +3

Wired 2km of distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man wanting to replace his i5..

      • +2

So many times it happens too fast
You trade your passion for the PCMR.

  • +1

    Not significantly cheaper than local.

    • +1

Agreed. Even if you don't care about supporting the economy we're in, there's still value here with better warranty and faster turn around (that said amazon warranty is great but slower since international shipping)

    • It is still cheaper - if people want to buy something and it that purchase is below RRP that is a deal.

$20 reduction will be more than we could expect from local stock any time soon.

Not that I plan to buy this - I am just trying to differentiate it from the NES posts.
