What's the best way to contact dell about this on the weekend?

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the same laptop @ $999 selling from MS for same money?

    https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Dell-XP…

If this is correct why would you buy refurb instead of brand new from MS?

    • +2

except you forgot to add US Tax on top or Australian Tax on top…otherwise you are very spot on.

    • +2

That is a link to the US store.

      • +11

        opps silly me…..sorry guys :)

  • +2

Dell Factory Outlet is closed on weekends. Usually on weekends the page is blank.

    • I believe most of them would be sold out on Monday.

  • Questions -
    1) Can I claim TRS?
    2) Can one really tell the diff between FHD and QHD on a 13.3" screen?
    3) Is the RAM and SSD upgradeable?

    Thanks.

    • +3

      1) Price includes GST so you should be able to claim TRS
      2) Yes there's a difference. Note that the FHD is matte and non-touch while QHD+ is touch and glossy. FHD adds a couple of hours more battery life. Personal preference between the two. Good review covering the differences: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP10A4tVfVM
      3) On the XPS13 only the SSD can be upgraded, on the XPS15 you can upgrade RAM and SSD.

      1. Not sure

      2. Aside from specific details posted above re these models… in general Yes, the icons and window chrome is smaller on higher resolution. So you get more working space on the screen.

      3. Almost certainly, within limits. However you would need to check specs of the actual model you were interested in.

  • so is it a XPS 13 9350 or is it a XPS13 9530?

    • +1

      9 3 5 0 = 13"
      9 5 5 0 = 15.6"

      • +1

says up top the XPS 13 9550 thats all
        I'm guess its a typo

        • Yep typo, updated cheers.

Feedback about dell's refurbished stuff anyone? Prices are nice, any reason why not to buy it? ;)

    • +3

I bought the refurb XPS13 QHD+ for $60 more about a month ago. First time buying refurb Dell.

Condition I received was generally good. A tiny scuff on the top lid. The keyboard has minor discoloration which indicate use. Slight discoloration on the laptop where you normally rest your hands when typing.

I have't seen the FHD but the QHD is an interesting feature. I'm not sure if I am making the most of it. I wish it came in matte though. The glare is somewhat annoying.

Read a lot of reports about coil whine but I haven't noticed any at all.

I bought a refurbished XPS 15 9550 in December for about 1.8 or 1.9 as well and have had so many problems. First time was a sticky keyboard which they replaced. Then a week later, the laptop wouldn't turn on and they replaced the mother board. Now my speakers do not work. So now I'm returning it. Such a shame because the laptop itself is really nice.

    • bought a refurb inspiron 13 7348 for $700 about 8 months ago.

no issues at all. there was a tiny tiny mark which I found 3 months later but it looked brand new when i first got it.

    • I bought a dell refurb a few years back. The laptop is still perfectly fine and used daily.
Unit arrived looking brand new, the only thing I noticed was the power adaptor just had the leads wrapped with a rubber band, not in a plastic bag that's usual for something new..

    • I too bought a refurb a couple of months ago. Very minor cosmetic blemishes on the top cover. Otherwise looked new.

Note the slight price differences in the 9550s.
      - with either Win10 pro vs home
      - Killer vs DW1830 wifi cards

Quite a few ppl with have had wifi issues on the dw cards. (whilst this can be replaced yourself) driver updates are available for the dw card. (I personally haven't had major issues with the dw card - though it's not quite as good as my Macbook (signal strength wise)
Given Dell themselves changed the subsequent 9550s/9560s to Killer cards - it's probably for good reason

  • Just a long time not asked question, can we claim cashreward from Dell refirbished store?

    • You can't order directly through the website. You have to talk to someone to order these deals so probably no. You'll get emailed a receipt after the chat

    • nope. only online transactions work with cashrewards.
this is offline kinda card over the phone things so no way to track it.

    • I dont think you can.

    • I'd guess no, because IIRC you had to chat to a dell employee to actually purchase the stuff

    • No
Its already a clearance sale, double dipping seems a little greedy imho

      • Saving money is greedy?

        • double dipping is greedy
Not once did I say that people can't save money
Cashrewards would LOSE OUT big time if they followed this practice

        • @shawncro 222: Double dipping is an OzBargain practice! Think about all the eBay sales.

      • What are you talking about? Using cashrewards for the deals from here is always double-dipping.

It was kinda hard looking at all that info on a web page so I've dumped it into a sheet to filter out results.

Maybe this could be useful to some:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WyUQ9qVzpibtOll1SqQ7…

I've split out 2 separate tabs for XPS 13 and 15 models. :)

    • That's awesome thank you! I would like to see which of the 15" have touch screens but I can't expand the cells to see the full entry. Maybe because I'm looking on mobile?

      • No worries!

It works on desktop so it must be an issue with mobile.

But looking at the results I can only see 2 bundles that don't have Infinity Touch, which are:
        -DFO-3907682XL
        -DFO-4016304XL

The rest have IT in the description. Hope this helps!

  • Is there much of a difference between all those different 13" models?

  • -5

    Dell sucks. Period.

  • I'm tempted to upgrade my 2011 MacBook Pro.

Has anyone gone from Mac to Windows? I like my Mac because it works great with the iPhone and iPad. However it is getting really slow and takes a while to boot up and I don't really want to spend $2k on a new one. I also use a Windows computers at work and don't mind them.

I always keep my eye on the Dell refurb outlet but what does it mean "OS Media not included"? Does it not come with the operating system?

    Cheers

    • +1

I think it means they don't give you the DVD which has the Windows OS. It comes with windows 10 home/pro pre-installed

    • -1

have you upgraded your Macbook's RAM and put in a SSD? that should make it feel anything from slow

anyway, i've been using Macs for years and am now too planning to jump ship to windows. mainly because Apple is starting to lag behind in value for money on the laptop and ultrabook front. If you're ready to deal with virus protection and installing drivers again, Windows is the way IMHO

Also, OS not included means you have to bring your own copy of Windows. Not a dealbreaker, especially if you are open to buying one of those OEM keys posted on Ozbargain for under $10

      • +3

No, that's not correct. Windows is installed and the backup is on a partition. It means there are no disks.

        • i stand corrected, thank you for sorting that one out

        • @Mr Mrrtn:
It's only because I've bought one before. They should really state it better.

        • If you swap out the SSD, how would you re-install windows? Could you save to USB and reinstall that way? assuming the OEM windows key would be on on a sticker?

        • +1

          @orbital:
You can do a backup, make restore install disks.

        • @PVA:

ah ya, makes sense, thanks :)

        • @orbital:

If you want to do a clean install, just download the ISO directly from Microsoft and install it. Nowadays the key is saved in the BIOS for these branded computers so you don't have to enter anything in manually.

        • +1

@eug: If you install the latest windows 10 updates, which should hopefully already be installed, you can link your microsoft account to your windows 10 licence. So when you do a clean install, and re-connect your microsoft account it should automatically pick up your license.

I recently did this when I installed a NEW PCIe SSD as my new boot drive.

    • It means no disks, it's all on the hard drive.
I could seem to do a backup of the os when I bought mine so just got on their chat line and they posted out the windows os on USB to me, free.

  • Closed on weekends.
    Need to wait.

    • What time can we call tomorrow?

      • It's normally done via online chat.

        • yes, but that's not been happening for me today. THey said to email someone and wait. Has this process changed?

        • @lordra: Don't know. But I got something from DFO a few months ago and it was still online chat.

        • @lordra: So I answered my own question. Clicking on chat on the top left corner goes to the main chat team for .com. Clicking on chat that says "got a question, chat now" takes us to the DFO team chat!

  • do any of these XPS models have the flip screen to turn it into tablet-like mode?

    • nope

  • What a shame I have to work on Monday, would buy one if I havent

    • Why can't you buy one

      • Maybe he doesn't have a desk job?

        • Does he have a smart phone ? What is he a deep sea diver ?

        • @FatBlanket: If you're going to be chatting on that phone for 15+ mins (plus waiting in queue) your boss is going to be mad.

It's online chat too, which is not good on mobile.

  • To confirm what I've read, the XPS 13's would come with Thunderbolt? ta

    • Yep one thunderbolt 3

  • Which of these would you recommend to a computer science student? Was thinking the $999 xps 13 due to the FHD extending battery life. Not too sure yet though, idk if it's worth $999 for a refurb.

    • The $999 is just fine for a comp sci student in terms of performance. I'd lean towards the FHD version too because of the battery life.

If I can make a recommendation, the DFO-3835621XL for $1,079 is looking good. It is FHD, and for the extra $80 it has an i7 instead of an i5, which in this case is not that much more performance (maybe 5% improvement), but it has double the hard drive space (256GB instead of 128GB), and also has Intel Iris Graphics 540 which gives you around 40% better performance for gaming.

    • Just wanted to add that I would get that one myself…but I'm a bit picky when it comes to the keyboard. I tried the XPS in store and I found the keyboard a bit too "mushy".

    • they got only 1 DFO-3835621XL?

      • Looks like it…

  • Is the only difference between the $1799 xps 15 and the more expensive one the extra memory and the larger ssd? The battery is the same?

  • Do these have a14 day change of mind policy like the new ones? And do they have the 12 month warranty?

    • I got a 9550(refurb) a couple of months ago.
Yes - 12 months - next business day (same as if you were buying new)
Not sure about 14 day return.

  • Anyone know if the Student 15% off dell discount can be used over the phone with a refurbished laptop?

  • +2

Sigh.. their service isnt great. They cant even tell me whether a unit was sold or not. Waiting for the Inventory team to come in apparently at 10(!!)..

    • +1

Same still waiting for their email

    • Dell Outlet service is always like that unfortunately. Sometimes you get a rep that goes above & beyond, but most act like they don't even want to make the sale.

Best bet is to have a few order #'s queued up in case stock is gone, and always try for the order lots with multiple devices under the one code.

  • Is there something wrong with the chat queue? I've been no.3 for about 30 minutes…

  • I was 6 in queue at 8am and just now got told the 3 models I was after are sold.

    • Do you mind sharing what models were sold out?

      • +1

Stayed on chat for 2hrs 45 mins
        DFO-3998767XL
        DFO-3927105XL
        DFO-3926429XL
        All 16gb ram 512gb SSD 3200x1800 display

    • Were you told by email?

    • I've given up. Ridiculous. I was 12th in queue online and apparently I was like 26th in queue overall. They could not tell me what was available and how the units could be secured and its now almost all sold out. Nothing seems to be available. Could not get an order through at all. Waste of 3 hours of my time.

  • +1

This queue method really sucks. Dont know what is available.. "Not Happy, Jan!"

    • I've been queueing since 10 and from 45th position I've only moved up to like 16th in those two hrs

  • I emailed the OUtlet team direct and got back an invoice just after 10am - just waiting for them to organise payment now - fingers crossed.

    • What model if you don't mind me asking? And what email address did you contact them on?

      • +1

        The DFO-3901121XL (XPS 9550 w/ 32GB RAM + 1TB SSD) :)

The email address I was provided was [email protected] - hope they are able to help you!

  • +1

What a horrible service, connected straight away with no ques at 8AM and asked for two model. Told they will email be back after their inventory team at 10AM. Didn't get any email so I emailed back only to reply that both model is out of stock.

    • I had literally the exact same experience (down to the asking for two models).

    • Waste of three hours this morning. Pretty sad..

  • Ozbargain power? Tried to connect to the live chat and I am 49th in the queue, normally the queue is empty.

  • I have been on the chat for ages now Im going to give up.. I ordered years ago from the outlet and it was easy.

  • Does anyone know if the NVIDIA GeForce 940M 4GB GDDR3 supports dual display from a desktop?

  • All stock now gone on the Outlet website.

  • glad i dont even have a chance to try

  • Some stock i have available to purchase:

    DFO-3465317XL $1159
    DFO-3465304XL $1299
    DFO-3465306XM $1299
    DFO-3465307XL $1299
    DFO-3465317XM $1299
    DFO-3481541XL $1299
    DFO-3481548XL $1299

    i7-6500, 8GB, 256GB, DW8120 & Intel HD 520

Is it worth buying? I don't see why one unit is cheaper than the others?

Can i help anyone here in purchasing?

  • Some models back in Stock

  • Does anyone think that the Alienware Alpha R2 with 16GB DDR4 &256GB M.2 PCIe with NVIDIA(R) GeForce GTX 960 GPU with 4GB DDR5 worth it for $1,100? Not for me, I build mine, this is for someone far away from me so cannot do it for them!

  • I managed to order an XPS 13 this morning (Wed 1st March). There appears to be quite a few 15 inch models left. I got onto a sales rep straight away and had the order complete in 20 minutes.

  • received my XPS 13 today, but the laptop doesn't boot to windows :( it tunrs on and keyboard works, but no boot to windows

    • +1

Was it one of the "OS Media not included" ones?

You can download Windows 10 and create a USB installer from here.
