  • Just wondering how are these compare to the TP-LINK TL-PA411-KIT 500Mbps? Can I add a couple of this into my current Tp-link network?

    • My understanding is yes you can mix and match.

      • Yes I can confirm I have this exact set working with TP-link PA200s

  • •TCP: Up to 95 Mbps effective throughput
•UDP: Up to 95 Mbps effective throughput
    •Powerline: 500Mbps (PHY rate)

    • Does this mean the maximum output rate is 95 mbps?

      • +4

Yes, and that is if you are have two devices connected to the same powerpoint.
The high numbers are just marketing lies.
The best I ever got was about 3-4 MB/s.

        • -8

Then you had shit wiring in your house. I easily hit 20MB/s file transfers from Powerline > modem > WiFi.

        • Wait so why should anyone buy these over 200 mbps ones? What if you have a ethernet switch, will that decrease the speed even further?

        • +2

The high numbers are just marketing lies.

To you, it might seem a lie. But these devices only have 100mb ports. So 95mbps is pretty good.

The '500Mbps' claim is the bandwidth on the power lines, so you have 5 pairs of these devices talking at ~95mbps etc.

        • @Level380:

OK, then, not lies but deliberately chosen words intended to mislead.

        • +6

          @potplanty:
You are getting 20MB/s with 100mb/s device. Amazing, just amazing. You must be living in alternative universe where different laws of physics apply.

        • @chrism238: yeah that I will agree with. It can be misleading, but thats what marketing is all about!

  • +1

Please ignore my numptiness - but can I simply plug this in a socket and it will work with my modem/router? Only just found out about these the other day when wondering how I'm going to hook up my Foxtel without a cable lying all over the floor.

    • +1

      Yes you can

      • Thanks, think I might get one :D

        • It also depends on the copper power wiring within your house. Try it but don't be surprised if it fails to connect. Try another socket and see if it'll connect to that socket instead.

        • +1

          @soupiejr:

Yeah I can afford to buy and try, and if it doesn't work it can go in the pile of unused tech I have in a box ;) I'm sure it should be fine, the house is only around 9 years old and pretty basic, so here's hoping :) As for trying in another socket - it sort of misses the point of buying these to avoid cables…

        • +2

@MrsKiss: There was a recurring deal for foxtel customers getting similar versions for free. Idk if it's still available.
          e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/186652?page=1#comment

        • +1

@MrsKiss: Some of these also put out wireless signals, so finding a nearby socket that works may work for you too. Unfortunately, this one that's on sale doesn't do that.

  • +4

For what it is worth, I'm mixing D-Link and NetComm adapters all over the house, and contrary to advice and accepted wisdom, on different circuits and at the end of extension leads. By and large the whole lot works pretty flawlessly.

    • +3

You are lucky. I've had nothing but problems in a 30 year old house … distance and across different circuits.

  • I have a security camera that requires Power Over Ethernet to work. Will this device do the trick?

    • +2

No, this is Ethernet over Power. You need something like:

      http://www.msy.com.au/home/12568-tp-link-tl-poe150s-single-p…

      • Or if youre planning on multiple cameras maybe look into a switch that has multiple EoP ports

      • +1

Thanks for the reply and yeah I've been looking at those but they never seem to come with a power cable?

        • +1

The whole point of PoE is the ethernet IS the power cable.

        • @PainToad: Except you have to connect the poe switch to the power first and it's that connection which seems to be missing.

        • @ChillBro: What do you mean by connecting the poe switch to power? This is for injecting power to a single, unpowered connection. And it comes with a power adaptor to do that.

        • @ChillBro:
The linked injector comes with a 15.4W PSU.

        • @NeX: That's good to know. A lot of the ones on eBay don't come with the power cable. Might pick this up then.

  • Great! I was super livid last week when I missed out by literally 10 minutes, the deal they had going for the TP-Link AV500 kit for $44. Now they have an even cheaper deal, great! I will be rushing to get two of them first thing tomorrow.

  • +1

How is this compared to the DHP-309AV - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/286975 ?

    • That has a pass through option. I'd say its handy if you don't have that many wall sockets to plug into, as you would want to avoid to plug it into a multi socket.
I think these devices are being phased out by the AV2 models.

      • Besides the pass through feature is there a difference in terms of network performance?

  • It makes a big difference if the gpos are on the same circuit. That way it's not looping through your switchboard and back. I have the TP-Link 200s they work well, though never had the need to test the throughput.

  • Guys from my experience, unless your house is less than 5 years old, your electrical wiring is too old (too much static noise) for EoP adapters. My house is 15 years old, I tried connecting the NBN router on one end (95 mbps input) and only received 12 mbps as output, and I was only 12m away from the router. I spent $300 replacing the copper phone with Cat6 cable for the whole house, now I am getting virtually nil drop.

    • Have to disagree here. My parents' house is over 30 years old and they get at least 40-100Mbps.

    • yeah I paid I think $70 for the 500mbps tplink and it was awful. Unusable, could rarely load google with it..

    • +1

My above comment is based on my experience in our 43 year old house. I haven't measured speeds or had the need to, but I know we can sit in front of the telly hooked up to our server via powerline adapters and watch a 1080 movie with no issues. Same goes for iView and SBS OnDemand. We are on NBN now, but it was satisfactory on ADSL2.

    • +1

100y old house for me. Running my Synology NAS through one of these. Able to stream HD video from NAS to adapter via EoP another adapter to Router to tablet.

    • Mine is 12 years old, and I have no problems with 'jumping' circuits to send data to the shed. I also use a pair in two four-socket adapters on a ~ 40 meter long circuit loaded up with three desktops and monitors, a water cooler, a water heater [ tea and coffee, not shower:-)] a 32" TV and attached media player in 40 year old outbuilding used as a Community center, though in that case, the sockets the adapters are plugged into are on opposite sides of the reception divider wall.

    • Friend gave me a foxtel branded one that I use for connecting the xbox 360 (the wifi on the thing is horrible) I get 50mbps. House is older than yours

    • Rubbish. I have 6 foxtel supplied adapters that work flawlessly around my 54 year old house. 4 are used for IP cameras with a constant 40Mbps throughput for the past 18months. I have Telstra cable and although at the modem i can get speeds of up to 115Mbps, 95Mbps through the EOP adapter is good enough for me.

    • My house is like a 100 years old, can still get iView running on my dreamcast.

    • +1

      Any reasons why?

    • Blanket statement of the year.à
Ive used it in a 50 year old apt with no issues.

  • +4

Hefty $10.38 posting fee makes it a no-go

  • +1

Do they still stop working for no apparent reason (ie. after working properly for a while) ?

I'm still afraid this is the case and you'd still have to turn it OFF and back ON every now and then.

    • +1

I have the tplink Av1200 it's been up for months without rebooting them.

  • +1

I have EoP and think its great. Its only the basic iinet eop and it gives me good speed.

I might get this as an upgrade.

Whaaat? That's your screenshot? Amazing. Can you divulge your setup pls?

      • +1

Just a standard set-up, i have NBN i think thats why its so fast.

    • +4

Is your house actually inside the internet??

      • its faster when connected directly to modem. But the long 10m ethernet was an eyesore so was looking for ways to hide it and found some old iinet plugs. Did the trick!

  • +1

    Plus $12 shipping..

  • +1

Will these block the point next to it in a standard duplex outlet? I have a pair of TP-Link PA411s and while they're advertised as nano, they're still large enough to block the the second power outlet to everything but the thinnest of power plugs.

    rip my 100/40 NBN.

    • Where do you get these stats from? Didn't think you could get them if you had FTTP.

      • got it inside my moden iinet-TG1.

I have FTTN, my moden use phone cable.

        • That explains it. You can't see that information with FTTP (which I think is the only way of getting a 100/40 connection with the NBN) so I was confused when you said "rip my 100/40 NBN".

        • @johnnytran: my plan is 100/40 tho. and i used to have FTTP, damn i moved.

Never heard of nano ethernet… What the heck is that?

    • It just refers to the size of the adapter.

  • 'Nano Ethernet Over Power Kit': wut. I can't keep up these days.

  • Thanks for your post, THIS PRODUCT IS CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK

    • Yeah, even though I ordered for store pick up (Morningside QLD) last night, I got a message just now saying it's out of stock.
Looks like they prefer to cater for those who paid the $12 delivery fee.

      • +1

Just got my pickup confirmation (Melb)

I was told to wait for the confirmation email to pickup with Port Adelaide store. Finally got email stating out of stock.

Just a FYI I've had EoP working between different units in an old block of flats (because I wanted to try it for the giggles).

The speed was absolutely atrocious once it left the unit but it still worked. Something to keep in mind if you have sensitive information on your network (though there is security already from memory so you should be fine).

  • This one doesn't have WiFi. Can someone suggest a good unit with WiFi function?

  • Phenomenal deal for an AV500 powerline adapter. But I highly doubt it is future proof at all… Got AV2000 during the last 10% off eBay deal from wireless1 for my NAS and am happy with the results.

  • Purchased, and picked up today. Works perfectly in my 52 year old house.

  • Where can we get just the single ones now I have the starter kit?

  • So, what does it mean if your order has been "Preparation in progress" for a few days?

MSY is preparing to send it to me for Christmas?

  • My order was ready today
It said not to plug into power boards but I did anyway
    60 year old house
Worked just fine, didnt heed to adjust anything
    Amazing
