Didn't JB have this under AUD200 with a purchase of the Sony A6000, with a 10% discount or something like that recently? Or am I mistaking it for another lens?

    Full Time lurker

You can get arrested for that.

    • Arrest me free me from the vicious shopaholy!

I have one of these on my A7.

Word of warning, the focus motor on this lens is so noisy its not funny.

A great video here about the comparison. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eFL_w42SRw

If you want this lens, go into a JBHIFI shop and test one out, the focus motor is a lot slower…

Hope this helps for those wanting to get one. =]

    • The noisy AF motor is in line with other budget lenses from other manufacturers.

      • Yet the SEL50F18 is silent.

        • Its also a 75mm for crop and it was actually priced high at release.

Do your research and compare the price of this 50mm FF lens to the other budget Sony FF lenses: 28/2 and 85/1.8.

        • @Orpheus:

Its also a 75mm for crop and it was actually priced high at release.

So what's the crop factor of the sensor got to do with it? It's RRP is still cheaper than the RRP of this FE lens.

Do your research and compare the price of this 50mm FF lens to the other budget Sony FF lenses: 28/2 and 85/1.8.

Yes it's cheap, but saying all other manufacturers 50mm budget lenses are just as noisy is moot. All the hammer88 was doing was warning folk who might have considered this lens for video, that it's noisy, especially seeing as though this deal is via overseas purchase.

        • @Flyerone: Smaller format lenses are generally cheaper. Go compare a fuji XF medium format lens to a Nikon 1 lens.

Correct, they are noisy like the competitor lenses in the same class. Thats my point.

Wow, this Sony FE lens is cheap from the US, but I've already got Zeiss FE 55mm f1.8 which is sharp as hell.

    • Have to agree with that. But if you are on a budget get the FE 50mm.

  • I will have all the 50mm for E Mount and a a7rii available, maybe time for a review ;)

  • this is a modified and improved version on the A mount equivalent, it is not bad, i can speak with the amount sample… but the old 50 1.4 is even better in some respect but you will need a converter

  • i have this (paid $183 tho from video pro incl delivery), it's a portrait lens and not suitable for food shots … unless you want to stand 3-4 metres away … SEL16F28 or SEL20F28 are other options.

    • Was this FE model? or the SEL50 for ASP-C? i think you could definitely shoot food from the table side with the FE 50mm if using it on the full frame sony cameras…

    • Its not too bad to be honest, you do have to stand a little far away but you can manage once you learn

      took these the other day

Slightly cropped pics but you get the idea

  • oh i misread, no it's the SEL50F18 for emount lens … which is not a full frame

    • I love this SEL50F18 too, awesome lens as commonly known by Sony camera FANS

Worst lens I've ever used, it's noisy ,very slow struggles to focus Sometimes and not very sharp though for the price I guess it's ok.

    • Funny how Fujifilm has had noisy slow AF motors for their mirrorless prime lenses and they were even more expensive and only covered crop sensors, yet they managed to get away with it.

      • You mean the 35mm f1.4? Oh i think its abit hard to compare these two, the Fuji is very well built and the images taken have a very creamy special look! I really like that lens. Yeap they are both noisy and slow in focus.

  • is it full frame?

    • Yep, the focus is abit slow and noisy vs other Sony lens but comparable to Canon and Nikon nifty fifty

  • Bought this just recently - very good lens for the price.

yes its noisy but that is not an issue unless you are making videos or doing animal photography.

again, not built as well as some of the top tier lenses but I coming from MicroFour Thirds system and I cant find anything to complain about.

the focusing is slow but for its primary purpose i.e. Portraits I think that shouldnt be a problem - the subject can wait for half a second longer ;)

also, not as sharp as the 55mm 1.8 , specially off centre but hei - its also quarter the price

    • I received last week. The focused is very slow.
