        • @RewardBucks:
Is the cost that they won't sell you apple care, or have you had an issue?

        • Haven't had an issue, but it was almost a year since I purchased it, so I thought I better get Apple Care. Then after 3 calls with Apple and 2 with Kogan, I've discovered Kogan's original purchase was from a reseller almost a year before and Apple logged that in their system.

I have a $340 Apple Care I can't use, plus a machine I bought a year ago that Apple is saying is almost 2 years old.

@RewardBucks: wow that's dodgy as all hell. stay away from kogan it would seem

  • what stuff would people recommend to upgrade a mid 12 MBP?

Mine is currently starting to slow down etc.

  • +4

Best computer I've ever had with the right (for me) combination of portability, amazing battery life, but still enough power to work (mostly coding, compiling, writing and browsing) for the whole day.

Great in lecture theatres, airports, coffee shops, giving presentations and generally schlepping around.

For my needs, more battery life beats higher resolution screen, but I don't play any games or do any photo work etc, and mostly I'm just typing in a terminal window, which looks not very different in FHD.

But Apple are going off in crazy direction with new Mac lineup, so when this dies I'll have to take the plunge into putting Linux onto an XPS13 or something like that. (But I wish Apple would notice how much market share they're losing by not keeping a modern affordable portable in their lineup)

    • could not agree more. Just one point, higher resolution makes letters sharper on screen, really really nice. But, yeah, for that sort of premium, we can live with a slighter lower screen resolution. It is time to turn to IBM compatible pc now.

    • Yeah - I wish Apple would keep this model and add Retina display.

It's a big jump in price to the 12" Macbook

  • I bought one for my dad. Hopefully Kogan declare the value after the 20% off or else anyone who bought it would be charged GST on arrival into Australia.

  • Mine has been very good.
Only downside is the SSD is incredibly costly to upgrade, so I have a 128gb sd card in the slot all the time.
And for some reason it stopped recognising my external display a week or so ago. I haven't had time to sort it out yet, as troubleshooting apple stuff is extremely difficult as the support info is very basic and swamped by novices saying 'try this' or 'try that'.

  • Why is this running the old OS X El Capitan? (2 years old now)

    • The air is pretty much a discontinued model at this stage. That would have been the OS when it was released.

      • thanks I'm not an apple person

possibly the reason for the above WARNING from RewardBucks

    • +1

Because new macOS always has lots of issues when released in the first year. I regret updating to Sierra a lot.

      • i used to give it 11 months then update :P

  • For those knowledgable in all things Apple:

I currently have a mid-2013 11-inch Air. The only thing that really bugs me is the size - performance is almost completely adequate for all that I need. Based on resell values, I may only be 400-500 out of pocket after I sell my current Air.

I'm tossing up whether to buy this, considering it's a good price, or wait for the eventual phase-out of the Air, and then purchase the MBP or 'new' MB once it fills the void in the pricing structure left by the Air.

    • +1

Wait is a method, I will wait since you got something running at the moment. I got 2012 MB Air, runs like a charm.

  • Doesn't eBay sellers normally declare the pre discount price? Therefore over $1000 and getting charged GST?

  • Very tempting but I'm having mixed feelings about apple in general. Have had an iPhone 6 Plus and a MacBook Air mid 2013 suddenly stop working on me in the last month - both out of warranty. The MBA has a stuffed logic board and is out of warranty according to apple. I guess the reality with these is once they are out of warranty they are actually quite hard to fix - the only thing that is (easily) replaceable is the battery and the ssd. The cost of repair through apple is usually the same as a new one and the cost of repair through an unofficial repairer is probably half that but with not extended warranty.

Are these ineligible for apple care? Is there any way to find out?

    • Yes Apple care will take care of those things and they would be eligible for the care if it was purchased while still within the items warranty period. But as for your items firing out of the warranty take them to a Apple Store and talk to a peon. They may offer a free repair as a show of good faith.

Out of all the items that have broken of mine Apple has repaired them all or replaced them all for free. Few items were out of cover by a month or two. They have a little policy where they can do one free repair out of warranty as a good faith one so long as the item is in good condition and not unreasonably old. Niece just had her iPhone 5c that stopped reading SIM cards replaced for free about two weeks ago, it was about 3 years old. Just need to talk to them and generally being nice will get you further.

Of course if it looks like you used a mac book to flog a man to death you will probably be SOL.

has anyone confirmed that the price on the invoice will be $995 rather than the full stated price so we don't cop the import tax? TIA

    • No invoice will issue price before discount which is AU $1,243.99.

      • +1

how do you know? did you manage to get in contact with them? thanks

    • Confirmed - Invoice states the discounted price. No duty is required upon delivery.

      • Is it confirmed for this deal? Or were you referring from the last deal in September?

        • Sorry, confirming for deal in September. Same company, product and both just under $1000. Should be fine.

        • @Mysterymeat: hope so, thanks for the input!

        • If it helps… i brought a MB Pro from Kogan recently for $1450 and I didn't pay any tax when it arrived from HK

    • +1

I just got an invoice issued by Kogan for $1,243.99 so hopefully that's not a sign of the commercial invoice they will issue with the shipment. It would be incredibly disappointing if GST and duty and clearance fees were charged for an item under $1,000

  • Is it worth it to pay an extra $480 for the 256gb instead http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/191940895249, like is that still a good deal? Also it's listed as posted from Melbourne, does that mean TRS can be claimed?

  • +3

just called them up and confirmed that the listed price will be under $1000. They'll send a seperate paypal invoice into your email that lists the full price.

  • I actually did it… after not buying one of these macbook air bargains for the last 2 years ive finally succumb to buying one .. and just in the nick of time before apple stops selling them and youll be forced to buy a $2000 equivalent dongle death -.-

  • Anybody received shipping notification??

  • +1

    Mine arrived today, pretty quick!

    • When did you order it?

  • Mine just arrived too. No tax needed.

    • Good to hear! When did you order it?

      • +1

16/03 about an hour after the deal was live.

  • Are these posted overnight from Hong Kong? Ordered one on Saturday and apparently it was processed by the warehouse yesterday.

  • +2

Could someone who has received their macbook please tell me how long they have left on their warranty? You can check by entering your serial number on apple's website:

    https://checkcoverage.apple.com/au/en/

    • the serial number of the device is on the invoice they sent.

    • I entered in the serial number, it asked for the purchase date, it then said covered until 31 March 2018.

      • Thanks for your replies.

I don't think I've received an invoice, as such. I ordered yesterday and received 2 emails - one from PayPal and one from eBay saying order confirmed.

        • Me too. Ordered yesterday and only received PayPal email and eBay confirmation so far.

    • Please enter a valid serial number… Hmm mine was shipped from Hong Kong

      • +1

I had the same problem, the DickSmith invoice showed a serial number beginning with letter S, but I called Apple and they said take out the S at the front of the serial number. So my S/N# began with letter F.

    • Mine shows warranty until 21 March 2018.

  • +1

    Mine ordered on 16/3.

  • It says there's still a warranty but unsure if that means Kogan is providing their own warranty instead of Apple.

Bloody hell, Cashrewards wasn't working when I ordered… and then it started working after 30 mins

  • It's expired now since CYBER coupon gone. Really frustrated I didn't buy it as I was waiting for cashrewards.com.au to load and it has been down since before 11pm tonight (been refreshing so many times and even got their different 'technical difficulties' messages including the one directing me to read lifehacker!).

  • watching my Toll Shipping like a Hawk …. landed monday and then no update its now wednesday

  • +1

    An update:

My warranty was activated on the day I activated my Mac, and I was also able to attach an Australian bought AppleCare to the system. The AppleCare came in at $239 with the student pricing, which I'm happy with. Given that this is the last MBA and was manufactured in 2015, I'm hoping that if there is some kind of ahem legitimate warranty repair needing to be done right before my AppleCare expires in 2020, then it will need to be replaced with a new "MacBook" since refurbished units for the MBA will hopefully be long gone.

    • Clever .. I'm going to take mine in before opening..
So Apple care is an extra 2 years ontop of the 1 year Australian warranty? Or just two years all up?

      • +1

It's an extra 2 years, so 3 in total.
