      • they have no idea man - i have done few applications over years and mention only select card !! has always passed through !

        • Yeah I don't think they really check out every single detail on your credit history. Just don't mention you have 2 mortgages and 5 cc and you will be right.

        • @Frozensage: lol that's what I did 2 months ago when applying anz black and got rejected.

This time? Just used 2 ccs instead and went through lol

  • Note that the minimum credit limit is $15k for this card.

    • 6k for the platinum one, you don't need the Black one, just get the points and close the account.

  • These cards also come with 0% p.a. for 12 months on balance transfers. It's good if you are approved for high limit and transfer your current credit card balance in to get free interest money.

    • Points are probably better than earning interest.
      Certainly easier.

      • Could you please tell me more clearly? If I choose to transfer my balance, then I won't get the points?

        • how will you spend the min $2500?

        • @PissLUR:

fpor example I got an approval of $10,000 and i request to transfer just $5000, is it possible? I have never done the balance transfer before, so i don't know.

        • +1

          @divious:

Say you do balance transfer of $5,000. then spend $2,500 to get the bonus points.
you will be paying interest for the $2,500.

    • but anything you spend will attract interest, because i think your payments will go towards the 0% first?

  • so if you're not a current westpac customer, can you open a reward saver and then apply for this card to avoid the first annual fee?

  • -1

Mother (profanity)….. I literally just got these cards a few weeks ago for $399 p.a., but at 100K points and $5K spend. Still, I would probably prefer this one :(

    • +1

If you were to sell 50k of your points at 1c each, that would still make you better off.

      • I wouldnt be selling points, Qantas have become very tight on this, they will chase the seller and the buyer. Its a clear breach of their T&C's which they are strictly policing.

  • Does anyone know why I just opened the eSaver account and I got both of the eSaver and the Choice? Thanks.

    • It's an option (selected by default, from memory) when you apply.

    • apply for a Rewards Saver and close the other two accounts the Choice has a $5 monthly fee

      • How do you close? Visit a branch or just make a call?

        • phone call should do it

  • I just got the NAB one. Wondering if I should just apply for more cards and stack the points. This one is even better because I can close it and not incur any expenses.

Does anyone successfully churn and burn cards for maximising their points?

    • +1

      Yes, pretty much everyone.
You just have to keep track of your cooldowns. I put them in Google Calendar.

      • Cool

Know of any sneaky ways to rack up the minimum spends? I would be overspending if I made the minimum.

        • +3
          1. Fully refundable flight or hotel reservations, booked far in the future, then cancelled after the points come in.

          2. Prepay bills or premiums. I don't do this because you're effectively paying 4.x% interest on the sum by doing this. It might be worth it if you can prepay health insurance premiums that would otherwise be rising more than effective interest.

          3. Buy thousands in gift cards for the supermarket chain where you do your shopping and spend them over the next year.

      • +3

its like christmas every few months when you can apply for a new card again!

        • +4

ozb makes me love banks so much! :D

    • +1

I've been alternating between ANZ and Westpac black for the past few years. Hasn't yet had any fatal side effects. Got to eat some free food in airport lounges as a bonus too.

  • +1

You can choose Qantas points or Westpac-home Altitude Reward Points. But rather than NAB and ANZ, their Reward points, you can choose cash-back directly. For the Westpac points, the most cost-effective method is to convert the points to the gift cards. But the rate is not good. The rate converting the Altitude points to woolworths eGift card is 220 points=$1, but for the Qantas frequent flyer points converting to woolie eGift card is 181.8 points=$1。
Since the 50000 bonus points is all the same, then to choose the Qantas frequent flyer points is better than the Altitude Reward points.

    • I always convert my Altitude Rewards point into rebate. it works out better imho.

      • That's rebate to what? Purchases on a Credit Card?

        • +1

          Altitude Annual Fee Rebate.

          Product description

Please note you are allowed to make only one annual fee redemption per card per year. The Fee Rebate process is automated. Cardholder will not receive a voucher, the fee is simply credited to your credit card account.

  • +1

I've also done a 0% balance transfer with them on top of those benefits mentioned. Transferred to my mortgage offset which saves me approx 4%.

    • do payments on the card go towards the 0% interest first or the new purchases?

    • How did you do that?

    • +1

how does balance trf work with $2500 spending requirement? The whole $2500 will be charged like 20+% interest?

    • ive already tried this with a few banks and they wont let you pay off the mortgage using your credit card for points

      • You obviously are not that creative 😂

  • +1

The offer I got also included 0% on purchases. But if I'm not mistaken, inder recent laws repayments are applied to highest interest rate balamce and the lower rates next. Best to read the PDS or equivalent.

  • $2500 is a good way to spend on Annual premium for your Private Health Fund before 1 April especially if your health fund doesn't charge CC surcharge and also have the 0% purchases promo as well.

    • Do you pay for a year upfront or for a previous year?

      • +1

1 year in advance, paid by 31 March, which means I'm not affected by the premium increase in 1 April. In other words I'm delaying my premium increase every year.

        • That a nice trick, thanks! About 9% discount from my calculations.

  • Be wary that balance transfers can impact your credit score too.

    • Not much if you always pay on time and have high income.

  • I've held a Westpac Altitude standard (lowest-tier) card very recently, but not the Altitude Platinum/Black. Am I still eligible for the 50k QFF and $0 fee, provided I've kept my Rewards Saver account?

"Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer. The bonus Altitude Points or Qantas Points will be credited to your points balance within 12 weeks after the eligible spend criteria being met."

  • +1

Can the points be used for jetstar as I don't travel Qantas too expensive…or how much is 50k points work in gift cards ?

    • +1

Yes, you can use them to book jetstar flights via the qantas site

  • So 50K points is worth $500 for booking with Qantas. Do these points expire?

How long it will taketo receive credit card? I need to make payment into health fund before 31 mar. Will i get card by then?

  • Hi,I've followed the process to apply for the black card, but why the system told me "congratulation, you've been conditionally approved for the Altitude Black World MasterCard", but before I sent the application, the website/offer told me this offer is for both Master card and Amex card, that's two cards under the same account via this application. Has Westpac already stops to issue AMEX card?
    thanks

    • They told me this morning no plans to stop amex

  • I still got my online banking account a time with no product attached to it.
If I apply via the online banking will they treat me as an existing customer hence no annual fee and with 50k Qantas point?
Or do I still need to open a saving account first?

    • yes, open savings account first.

  • +2

I'm so jealous of you guys who are asking how to spend $2500 in 90 days. I don't even understand how this is possible. I wish I could find a way to NOT spend $2500 in 90 days….

    • signup for Private health insurance. Pay $2500 in advance. Cancel with 30 days (cooling off period) and they will refund the $2500 to your bank account via direct deposit,.

      • Really? Which insurers will do this?

        • -2

I know for a fact that people care and frank do it like that.

Last time they refused to return it to my credit card and asked for my bank details . Frank is guaranteed to do this

  • Congratulations, your Altitude Black World MasterCard® and Altitude Black American Express® Card has been approved with a credit limit of $16000.

Well that was an easy 50000 QFF points and a $11000 12 month no interest loan on an upcoming purchase lol

    • Lol whats the proccess to get this 11000 "loan".

      • Buy an item on my existing credit card. Transfer the balance taking advantage of the 0% for 12 months

    • Thought the limit was 15k?

      • his other card is prob only 11k limit now what to buy for 18k.. hmmz

    • +1

Hey mate, I have applied for it after opening normal bank account with Westpac to get this promotion of $0 annual fee! I got the same email saying I'm approved for 15K, in the email it had financial table which doesn't mention anywhere about getting $0 annual fee for first year! Does it say in your email? I don't wanna get this credit card if I have to pay $395 lol
Can't call the bank their helpline is closed till Monday!

      • +2

Same here. They only charge the annual fee after its been activated by a month.

What i would recommend is when you call to activate, get them to confirm on the phone that you qualify for the $0 annual fee (and this is your proof because all phone calls are recorded)

        Cheers

        • I've earned bonus points and other things on a CC with a hefty annual fee (0 first yr). I don't want it any longer but am too shy to cancel it. The annual fee charge date is approaching fast :OöööO:

  • Looks like a good deal, not sure of eligibility as I already have a Amex (non-bank) card?

  • +1

Morning, I can confirm after speaking to Westpac that they have no plans at this stage to drop the AMEX like ANZ just have. And as Im not currently a Westpac customer all I have to do is open a Esaver or Rewards saver account , deposit cash and then go ahead with the credit card application. If they still debit the annual fee a phone call will fix it up. Cheers

    • +1

Rewards saver = no fees - never use it as it incurrs a $2.50 withdrawl fee

    • is depositing cash a requirement?

  • WestPac is no better than ANZ, verified my ID online and I couldn't withdraw the money out, been asked to visit the branch to verify the IDs again.

    • did you supply two forms of ID or one when setting up your account?

      • +1

Yes I did, and I had to visit their branch this morning. They always ask who is your homeloan provider and are you thinking to switch. I have been asked the same questions when visiting ANZ and NAB to verify my IDs.

    • but they'll happily let you deposit money into their vaults :D

I too provided my driver's license and medicare info and they told me need to pop into Westpac for chat (to sell me other things I'm sure). anyway don't need to verify my rewards saver, not going to use it anyway.

      • Yes you can deposit money in but you can't transfer money out until you verify the IDs at the branch.

    • +1

had the same thing happen to me with ANZ, can't access funds from the ATM or online, went into the branch gave them my drivers license and asked me to sign a form. it was odd that he asked me "did you sign a form?" "which branch did you open?" of course i cant do these things online. duh it's now 21st century fox.

don't have problem with Westpac as I have held an account with them for ages, I signed up online using my current account details to get the free annual fee.

  • Is this the same deal as this ?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256382

    • Almost. This one seems to have 0% balance transfer 12 mths & 0% purchases for 6 mths.

      • Didnt notice this so you can spend for 6 months without any fees / interest, does this need anypayment ie minimum each month ?

        • Any balance transfer will have minimum payment so I'd say yes.

Though after the 6 months, most likely you'd want to pay the full balance (balance trf + purchases) rather than waiting for the whole 12 months as the 'new' purchases will then attract interest and any payment made to the cc will be put towards the balance transfer amount first.

And in order to do the $2.5K minimum spend, you need to pay off some of the balance transfer amount first.
e.g. 15K credit limit, 14,250 balance transfer (only 750 can be used), so need to transfer $1,750 before being able to do the minimum spending.

        • So if you don't do the balance transfer, then yes you should be able to use the cc for 6 months with no fees & interest (but please re-read the T&Cs or call to confirm) and yes they will have minimum repayment every month.

  • Conditionally Approved. Thanks OP!

    • I was too and then I found out the email that instructed me to forward them my last 2 payslips for full approval was in my spam folder (gmail).

      • and now I got fully approved, again it was in my SPAM! lol

        • This happened to me to! This is very odd.

      • How long does it take to receive the email? And fully approved?

        • got the conditionally approved email straight after finishing application (or maybe within 1hr as it went into my SPAM folder), emailed my payslips @ 6:30pm EST last night and received final approval at 10:30am today

        • @FeZZa21:

It's strange, I have not received anything, applied this morning.

        • +1

@FeZZa21: does it mention $0 first year annual fee in the approval email? Mine still refers to $395 annual fee which worries me a little.

        • @macadamia: no the emails I've received so far don't mention any fees.

        • +1

@FeZZa21: ah alright. The email that I received says my application has been approved and the cards are on their way. There is then a financial table at the bottom that refers to the $395 annual fee. Will call them up if that's what I receive in the mail as well.

        • +1

          @macadamia:
ok so that's probably going to be the next email I'm going to receive, my last one said:

Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that your Credit Card application has been completed.

          Next Steps

We will be sending you a letter / email over the next few days with further details.

    • Me too, conditionally approved and have not received the email yet

    • Mine all approved and on its way.

So much better experience with Westpac than ANZ. They are just a pain to deal with when applying for a credit card.

  • +1

Isn't the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black deal better? 75K points, no annual fee, $2500 minimum spend in 90 days. Plus 75 status credits and 2 x lounge invitations.

    http://campaigns.anz.com/credit-cards/frequent-flyer-black/?…

    • the more the merrier

and this has balance transfer and I believe 0% purchase for 12 months therefore not necessarily comparing apple with apple.

    • They refused to give me this card :S

      • I got refused too so I went to the back to find out why (they couldn't tell me on the phone). Explained I forgot to put add some savings on the form, they contacted the credit card apppication people and it got approved instantly.
Worth a try if you could be bothered with the hassle.
