Can you get this card if you've already got altitude cards from westpac?

    • No you won't get the bonus points. Excludes customers who have held an altitude (including platinum and black) card in the last 12 months.
Note: unlike the last deal, which excluded customers that held any Westpac card in the prior 12 months.

      • I applied for the last deal. I'm an existing customer with a Black card and I got the bonus points awarded on my third statement after opening a new card. As well as a 0% balance transfer and no annual fee for the first year. So although the conditions may state not for existing card holders I think you will still get the bonus points.

        • Did you get a second Black card or just applied for one of the other cards?

        • @zeezaw: The last promotion was for Altitude Platinum. But the conditions stated no bonus points to existing card holders. No stipulation on specific card types.

  • +1

I think you can't get the bonus if you have had the card in the last 12 months

    • +2

It worked for me with Altitude Platinum following Altitude Black. Will now try for plain Altitude.

      • did you get the bonus points?

        • Not yet, I've met the spend but have only received one statement thus far. Fingers crossed for my next statement in 3 weeks.

        • @muncan: it'll be good to know if it goes through! Good luck!

        • @muncan:
          So did you get lucky?

        • @jackofspade: Sadly the bonus points weren't on my 2nd statement. I did get a customer satisfaction call from Westpac a few days before my statement, where I asked and they confirmed (while they recorded the call) that I am eligible and have met the requirements for the offer, but I would have to wait up to 90 days for the points to be received. I'd say go for it - assuming you don't mind a potential hit to your credit card rating.

        • @muncan: called westpac today and they said can take up to 12 weeks

how long did it take you the first time?

also did you cancel your original black card and then got an altitude? do they link the points to the same account?

        • @furythree:
          Black: 60k 10/3/15 - 10/6/15
          Platinum: 40k 23/2/16 - 20/3/16
          Altitude: 50k 8/7/16 - ?

          Always cancel before reapplying.
Yes I could log in with the same account, as an 'existing customer'.

        • @muncan: how long does it take to get the points?

and it says youre not eligible if uve had a card within the last 12 months

did you not have that issue?

        • @furythree: I think my previous comment answers both your questions.

        • @muncan: i just figured it out

        • @muncan:
I received the bonus points on my 2nd statement last week. Tempted to cancel my platinum and apply for the black but my credit score is pathetic after 4 credit cards in the last 4 months.

        • @jackofspade: even if you pay them off it gets that bad?

4 in 4 months is ridiculous tho.

I only got this cause ive wanted a black card for ages. the points was a nice bonus. how many points do you even need to get something worthwhile like a flight?

        • @jackofspade: Nice one. My credit score has been sitting on 561 for years of regular card applications, only in the past fortnight did it finally drop to 557 when shCitibank forced a credit limit increase on me from 6K to 15K (they changed their min limit), only days before I received their 70K points and subsequently cancelled the card. Bastards!

@furythree: I'd consider claiming 144K points for a First Class A380 flight from Dubai → Sydney as worthwhile.
(return flight so you get to use the First Class Emirates lounge in Dubai, you're welcome!)

        • @muncan: Just want to seek you advice how you managed the score so well. How often do you apply one credit card? I had 5xx in Sep, after applying 3 credit cards in two months, it dropped to 4xx. Appreciate.

        • +1

@hongd: Most likely we have different financial situations. I own my house outright with no dependants. I haven't received the bonus points this 3rd time with Westpac and I think it's safe to say I'm out of luck and it's time to close this card again so I can restart thei 12 month lull cycle. No loss to me as the card cost me nothing and I've benefited a few AmEx offers. My credit limit has gone up now to 666 (maybe they're trying to hint something??) shortly after cancelling my shCitibank card and setting up direct debit on all my current cards (normally I'd manually pay them in full). I currently have a St George Signature card, and because of the 1% interest rate I've opted to only pay the minimum (earning more in a 'high' interest savings account). This is possibly why my rating jumped up - I had this feeling that to the lenders, I'm more desirable as someone who only pays the minimum instead of the traditional OzBargainer credit card whore who always pays their balance in full and the lenders make nothing from them - thus rewarded with a higher score. I don't know this for sure, I'm just experimenting. Chime in now if you're reading this and work for a credit rating company!
I probably apply for a card once every 3 months on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I'm in a trough at the moment waiting for my 12 months of ANZ inactivity to be reached. :-)

        • @muncan: Good advice and experience. I found it is a big challenge to resist so many tempts. :) I have to give up some of them and only apply one of them each time :( hard though. Thank you. Voted up.

        • @muncan:
Bad luck mate. Did they give you a reason for no bonus points?

    • DO you have to cancel your current earth black to get the bonus points?

  • Newbie question: will I be eligible for the complementary travel insurance even if I don't spend a cent on flights/accommodation using this CC? My trip is already booked.

    • +1

no, for international travel insurance, it says you need to spend $500 in additional to other terms

      http://www.westpac.com.au/docs/pdf/pb/credit-cards/consumerc…

You spend at least $A500 on your prepaid travel costs (i.e.
your travel costs that you pay for before leaving Australia)
and you charge these costs (e.g. cost of your return
      overseas travel ticket; and/or airport/departure taxes;
      and/or your prepaid overseas accommodation/travel;
and/or your other prepaid overseas itinerary items) to one
of your following eligible credit cards issued by Westpac

      • +3

I got stung with the this, you have to make sure the spend is all for yourself, I booked a accommodation for my family on this card which was $1200 and then the flights etc on another card with no insurance and they knocked back a claim due to the booking for accommodation was for 2 adults and 2 kids and not just myself, so they valued my portion at $300 and it didn't qualify. another dodgy loophole these insurance companies use.

        • Which credit card is this out of curiosity?

        • @gerryg: I cancelled the card a couple of years ago, I was dealing with their insurance company and not the bank, the bank is ok, just the insurance company behind it is not

        • @lukelegend: thank you. I probably should check with the insurance guys bankwest use as well if I'll get into the same issue as you. I always thought it covers everyone in the family who is travelling

        • @gerryg: I think most of them use Zurich these days.
Edit: It appears Bankwest does too.

        • +1

@therog1: I just rang Bankwest's travel insurance provider (Allianz apparently from July 2015) and they told me that as long as I spend more $500 and everyone in the family (me, myself, and the kids) travel to the destination and back home then we should all be covered. lukelegend's comment got me worried because I've always been buying plane tickets with my credit card and not getting any travel insurance with the thought that I'm covered by the travel insurance that came with my card. So all good now. :-)

          See page 33 of http://www.bankwest.com.au/library/pdf/PDS_20060801-154923.p…

        • @gerryg: Ah good find. Obviously Zurich haven't updated their website yet… Good that family is covered too!

        • +1

          @therog1:
"If the cardholder is eligible for this insurance as outlined
above, then the cardholder’s spouse and/or dependent
child/children also automatically become eligible for this
“International Travel Insurance” when each of them
individually meets all of the following eligibility criteria."

Note the key point is "each of them INDIVIDUALLY meets".
Therefore for a family of four, the total amount spend needs to be $2000 or more.

        • @Future Kids:

Hey Guys, Future Kids is right, I took it all the way to IDR resolution and it is per individual not the main account holder as I thought also.

          This was through Zurich also.

tried everything buy they knocked it back due to the above and not activating the policy.

    • Not on this card.

Some CBA cards will give complimentary travel insurance even if you haven't paid for the flight. There is a deal on the platinum card at the moment where the first years fees are waived. I would look into this before you leave.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255818

  • If we use it for one year and then stop using it, can we still get 50k points!!!

    • +19

      of course, welcome to ozbargain

      • +2

        Lol

    • finally waited for this deal to appear for the black card

  • I got this card last time, less spend though, but ended up copping the $150 annual fee because I couldn't be bothered opening a westpac account after closing one a few years back after constant problems (and odd charges).

The cards are great, and I do use them to earn points. But a word of warning, it took 3 months to receive the bonus points. So if you are looking for a holiday in the most recent future then look else where. I even called them and said what's happening with the points and they said they can't even contact anyone that does the points because it's handled in a different way. At one point I thought I was never going to get them.

    • +1

      Sounds like Worstpac to me

  • +1

Are you sure it is $0 annual fee AND 50k bonus points? Aren't they separate offers, one for existing customers and one for new customers? Can someone confirm?

    • +1

Looks like you get both if you're an existing customer. From the T&C's on the deal link -

^$0 annual fee in first year for existing Westpac customers promotion: To be eligible for this promotion you must be an existing Westpac customer that applies for a new Low Rate, Altitude, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black card by clicking on the Westpac customers 'Apply now’ button via westpac.com.au or westpac.com.au/mobile between 7 July 2016 and 11 October 2016. The first annual fee will be debited on the 12 month anniversary of the first transaction on your account and annually thereafter on the anniversary of the first annual fee.

Bonus points promotion: The bonus points promotion is available when you apply for a new Altitude, Altitude Platinum, Altitude Black card between 7 July 2016 and 11 October 2016 and spend the minimum amount of $2500 on eligible purchases within 90 days from card approval on one or more transactions. Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account. The bonus points depend on your choice of Rewards Program. The bonus Altitude Points or Qantas Points will be credited to your points balance within 12 weeks after the eligible spend criteria being met. Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Altitude, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

And on the fees tab -

      Annual fee $395
Special promotion: $0 annual fee in the first year for existing Westpac customers, when you apply via the Westpac customers 'Apply now’ button. New cards only. Offer ends 11 October 2016.

      • +4

Great, any suggestions for which Westpac account to open, preferably one with no hidden fees?

        • yeah im here for that information too.

        • As Tashaz mentioned below, you want the Westpac Reward Saver.

  • +1

Anyone know what can you redeem with 50k points? or how much $ worth is the 50k pts?

    • +2

About $300 worth of Westfield giftcards

    • Get one Bose QC25 when on sale.

  • Reminder NOT to open the transaction account as it seems it has a $5 monthly fee.
The eSaver seems to have no fee.

    • +2

Looking further into it, it looks like they won't let you open a saving account without opening a transaction account ($5 monthly fee). This is online at least.
May have luck in just opening a fee-less savings account over the phone or at a branch?

    • +1

Not if you transfer $2000 once in a month

    • +3

      Westpac Reward Saver
Earn bonus interest by saving regularly and not making any withdrawals.
Earn 2.09% p.a.1 variable bonus interest by depositing $50 and making no withdrawals by the last business day of the month
      Enjoy $0 monthly service fee
No minimum balance required to open account

      • It looks like you have to pay $2.50 every time you withdraw from this account?

        • Yes, but you won't be doing any transactions with the account. Simply open it to apply for the credit card.

        • just deposit 50 every month then close account when you cancel the credit card.

        • @Tashaz: why deposit 50?

        • @mikeyeggwhites: If you want the 2.09% Interest otherwise just open the account maybe deposit $10 then close the account.

        • @Tashaz: Deposit $0. As it says, no minimum balance required to open account.

        • @vetopower: Ok deposit $0 then, I thought of being generous for them to keep my $10 for 12 months without paying me any interest in exchange for the 50k points :)

      • +1

I did this about 3 months ago to get the last 40k deal (should have held out haha). Have not paid a cent so far and got the 40k points as described.

      • Careful…
Periodical payment not made fee $9

  • +1

I was waiting for no annual fee bonus point offer for long time.

If I am after only bonus points then should I go for Platinum or Black? Black would be the first option as it would have high point earn rate but would platinum hit less on my credit score?

    • Credit scores are based on your "Applications of Credit" (each time you apply for a loan/credit card). So if you take $5,000 Credit Card, it's all the same, whether it's Platinum/Black/Whatever.

      • Does Black have a higher minimum credit limit?

        • +1

          Yes.

Platinum is $6K minimum credit limit.

Black is $15K minimum credit limit.

        • @vetopower:

Thanks! Do you know the limit for the plain Altitude?

        • +1

@sween64: It's on the Details tab of the web page. $500 is the minimum credit limit for the regular Altitude.

  • +2

    Under the 'Features' section.

"Qantas Lounge passes (if you choose Altitude Qantas)

To use your passes, enrol and opt in ( https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au <-more terms here) Your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services will activate your Qantas Lounge pass."

So make sure you register asap if you want lounge passes.

Any idea on what qualifies as a qantas product? And what's the cheapest one? Haha

    • I'm wondering the same

    • The cheapest Qantas product is paying the surcharges on a frequent flyer redemption ;)

      • +5

Or buy 500 QFF top-up points for $20 with the card. This worked with Qantas AmEx card

        • This is great advice

        • will buying business class fare and then cancelled it (after 4 weeks, or after you got the passes) count?

        • They are quite strict with this and want to know what flight you are booking.

        • +1

@PcisT: When I purchased mine I had picked out pretend flights and hotel bookings (great way to drain your points) to justify my purchase. But they didn't ask for the details… grr

        • +1

@muncan: Yes, I called back and did the same. Thanks for the tip.

    • So it's mandatory to make the purchases and sign up? The ANZ card didn't require any signing up, you just called them and they sent it to you.

    • I'm thinking Whiskey on a domestic flight, ten dollars well spent?

    • I was unable to register a supplementary cardholder for this. Is that correct?

Also will the lounge passes be personalised, ie, can I sign up & receive but give them to someone to use?

  • Altitude rewards or Qantas ?

    • I'm facing that dilemma. 50k qantas points is probably better than the 25k krisflyer/velocity and/or $300 gift cards, but the earn rate for krisflyer is quite good.

I've just booked a business trip on Singapore, which was easier to do than qantas as they have better availablity and less points required.

      • You can switch between earning Qantas Points and Altitude Rewards, so you could get the 50k in Qantas Points and then earn for Krisflyer.

        • That is great if you can switch between Qantas and Krisfyer. Do you make the switch when you log into your account? I thought Qantas FF always kept separate from other FF.

        • Are you sure? Because the physical card itself is qantas branded

        • @Shadowsfury:
There has only been one (generic Westpac branded) card since they discontinued the separate "Earth" range of cards

    • Most common is people get Qantas points sign up bonus, then switch to Altitude points after receiving the Qantas points sign up bonus.

  • how much do you have to earn/year to get one of these cards?

    • i think at least 75k or higher

  • -2

Westpac IT is terrible. Had to complain numerous times due to their mistakes and they don't own their problems. Choose other providers if you can.

  • Why do you need to open a saving account?

    • +1

Because there's a wallet inspector who will gladly take all the money you want to give away?

Because the card is free for existing customers, and up to $349 otherwise.

      • Oh thanks.

  • Hi OP,

I'm not sure the earn rates quoted for the rewards card are correct. It seems to me it should be the same as QFF:
On regular / plat > $1 = 2 Alt points on Amex and 1 alt point on Visa which transfer at a rate of 2 - 1. Effective earn rate would be 1 Kris flyer on amex and 0.5 on visa.Likewise for Black.

  • I have been using Black card for quite a while now. 18,500 points get you $100 worth of gift card (Bunnings, Woolworths etc). So these 50k bonus points should get you $270 worth of gift cards. I have never looked at their actual worth in terms of buying air tickets, so not sure how useful they are. After using bonus points, I started using ING savings account for 2% cash back as that gets you $1 back on the spot if you spend $50 but on this one you have to spend $185 (if using MC, 1 point for $1 or $62 if using Amex, 3 points for $1 spend) to get $1 back and that too can only be used on limited things on their rewards website.

In regards to insurance, they are backed by Zurich. I have read their PDS and travel insurance cover seems good. Also their purchase protection/extended warranty/rental vehicle excess etc. covers are good but keep in mind they charge $250 excess for claims. I know some of banks used to have complementary cover without any excess, so i would go for that if I can find a decent one.

Regarding lounge passes, as far as I can remember they give you 2 passes a year but only for you so they are good if you are traveling alone but if you want to use lounge with your partner, you will have to pay for their pass.

    • Would be worth mentioning:

ING - they have extended their referral program ($75 for referrer and referree) to 31/7/2016.

Lounge Passes - these are by Priority Pass. Not very useful in Australia unfortunately, i.e. limited lounges. Good if you travel overseas a bit.

  • Anyone had any luck getting approved with under $75k? Mine is $70k, not sure if I should try.
