Apply for the Platinum instead of the Black. $30K income required. Same bonus points.

      • Didn't realise, thanks so much!

  • For anyone who signed up during the last deal (March 2015) and used the cards for a full year, you will not be eligible for this promotion.

Despite not having a Westpac card or account anymore, I was still able to login to their netbank with my old details and sign up for the $0 annual fee offer.

  • I currently have altitude black, applied a month ago….
Do you think I will still get the points etc? So I just cancel my card and reapply?

  • +1

Does anyone know if I can apply for both Altitude Plain and Altitude Platinum to get 50k QFF on each card?

I presume the conversion of 50k Altitude points to Krisflyer is less than 50k Krisflyer?

    Thanks.

  • -2

The value of points is basically negligible. If you take the value of the freebies you claim against the amount you have to spend in order to get them, the discount ends up being a fraction of a percent.

9900 AR points for a $50 gift card amounts to a discount of $50 for almost $10,000 worth of spending. 0.5% discount.

My current Platinum cards with Westpac gets me 1 point for VISA spending and 2 points for AMEX. This is actually a downgrade as far as points earning goes.

They changed the T&C to cap monthly points gain to something like 75,000. So even if you're a big spender, the points you get back might be worth less than the annual fee you pay.

I would take the 50k points then cancel the card. Assuming I have 2.5k to spend within 90 days which in my case would only happen if my council rates (paid in full), home insurance, car insurance and rego hit me all at once.

    • +2

Yes, you're doing it for the bonus points.

For transactions under $100, ING's 2% rebate is far better value than what you get with the points from cards like this.

      • What's the rebate for transactions over $100?

        • 0%. ING Rebate only works with Paywave, which is limited to transactions under $100.

        • @vetopower: try splitting purchase and you can paywave it more than once if its over $100

    • I think you will find the points cap on the Platnimum cards to be 7,500pts for Altitude points and 3,750pts for Qantas points. So not a huge cap at all. The Black cards are far superior for accruing points.

      • +1

Yeah that was a typo. 7,500 pts which makes it even worse value.

My annual fee is $395, so there's no way I'm getting that money back in points. And that is assuming I spend enough to reach my points cap every month.

  • Does owning a Westpac low rate visa card currently qualify as a current Westpac customer or do I have to acutally open up a savings account etc?
    thanks

    • yes, it does qualify. you just need to login to internet banking to apply.

  • I believe its 0.625 Krisflyer on MasterCard (Rewards) and not 0.83 as per description in the post. However, combined with Amex, its still a good card to get for high transaction users who wants to accumulate FF points.

  • I'm guessing no but is it possible to get both the balance transfer and bonus points without accruing interest charges?

    • Correct. Unfortunately balance transfers not counted towards the $2500 spend.

      • +1

Funny you replied to an old comment today - i just managed to score both bonus points and a balance transfer on my Altitude Platinum. The trick is to do the $2500 spend first, pay it off, then apply for a balance transfer.

        • Excellent! I'll give this a go too

        • @tinnybastard:
the current promo is 0% balance transfer and 1% on purchases, so the interest charges are negligible and easily offset elsewhere

  • I am a new customer of Westpac so I went to the branch to open both Westpac Reward Saver and the Altitude credit card at the same time. With the Reward Saver you will need to deposit $50 per month otherwise you will be charged a fee. And if you open 2 different Altitude credit cards, you can only get 50k points from one of the credit card not both.

    • +2

No you don't. You were told wrong information.

Reward Saver has no minimum deposit requirement to obtain the $0 monthly service fee.

      http://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/bank-accounts/sav…

      • Periodical payment not made fee $9

        • A periodical payment is a regular payment you authorise the bank to make on your behalf (eg pay a friend's account $100 per month). It has nothing to do with keeping your account open.

  • Can I apply their Travel Money card to become their customer?
    http://www.westpac.com.au/travel-centre/travel-money-card/cu…

  • I have an Amex (issued by amex) for FF points when spending on amex .. is there a better card than this to get points for Krisflyer when using mastercard/visa?
Currently my Visa gives me no points.

Edit: this link is useful for cards that earn points for krisflyer miles in case anyone is interested http://www.ausbt.com.au/the-top-five-credit-cards-for-singap…

  • if an existing a Altitude card holder that applies for this offer and ends up getting their bonus can you please post here so i can i apply too? i was told on the phone by a rep not very confident quoting website last sentence of terms "Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Altitude, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer." that i probably would not get the points as im already an existing Altitude card holder but i think it may work. thus awaiting confirmating from existing Altitude card holder when they get the points.

  • Has anyone here been successful in waiving the fees when their year is up? I'm looking at other options and trying to get an AMEX to enjoy all the cool AMEX deals, but only want something that would continue to be free.

    • +1

How about Qantas AmEx Discovery Card https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255731

      • Yeah just found that one, or the AMEX regular fee-free one that currently has $50 ($75 referred) free credit. I'm not into earning QFF points and only redeem for gift cards, and really just want to enjoy the AMEX deals. Already got an ING account for pay-waving everything we can so it's really about trying to find a card that I can do all my online purchases with.

        • +2

No reason why you can't do online purchases with Amex. It can be linked to your PayPal account too.

        • Good tip

    • CBA reversed the annual fee on the platinum MasterCard which was $249. All fees waive as per the exec package even though mortgage was now under $250K .Having a credit card linked to the Cba app is super handy but on the other hand it makes me ineligible for bonus frequent flyer deals for New customers.

    • I tried, they offered me a 2% reduction in the interest rate instead.

  • To be eligible for the two complimentary Qantas Club Lounge invitations, you must register at loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au and then use your Altitude Black Card in Australia to purchase selected Qantas products and services.

This sucks. ANZ FFB does not have this requirement.

  • Got rejected on the black application, prob cause i still have my platinum active. Anyone facing the same? Would it help if i close my platinum and re-apply for the black?

  • so what do people suggest is the easiest product to sign up for to become a Westpac customer?

  • "We've encountered a problem processing your application." This was for the Rewards Saver. Maybe because I didn't bother to put my middle name on the application but did put my middle initial on the Medicare ID check. I guess I'll wait…

  • +1

Reading the terms for the card it keeps saying that the points are dependent on the purchases being eligible purchases.

I am assuming that these are any purchases that do not consist of the following?

Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

  • As a new customer to Westpac, you cant open just an eSaver account by itself online. It only lets you open a 'Choice' account with it which has a $5 monthly fee unless you deposit $2000 a month. So be warned its not completely free to join westpac online.

    In branch may be different…

EDIT: nevermind I was trying the eSaver not the reward saver….. reward saver works for $0 fee without choice attached.

    • I opened a Reward Saver online. I had to have my ID verified and account activated in a branch which was a bit of a hassle.

      • I spoke to Westpac this morning to get my online login details after opening the reward saver. They told me I dont need to go to a branch as my ID online was sufficient. Their email says otherwise - that i need to now go in to a branch. This stuff should be their bread and butter - customer message all over the place. Anyway applied for the CC now that i can logon to their online portal, waiting approval :)

Summary: Terrible signup process from a major bank.

        • Yep! First branch said they couldn't verify my ID because the manager was busy for the rest of the day. What the hell? A teller can't verify my ID?

Fortunately the other close by branch is surrounded by Pokestops which I wouldn't have discovered otherwise.

  • if you dont have any accounts are just a wbc supplementary cardholder with internet banking log on do you qualify for the annual fee to be waived if you apply for a new card in your own name?

  • I got a confirmation email that the (Platinum) cards are in the mail. However, the T&C's on the email state an annual fee of $150 (in 2 places). Tried calling their contact number but hold time too long. Will advise once I have an answer.

    • That's completely normal for pretty much all credit cards. Banks don't seem to include details of promotions with the cards on the mail - you just get the same paraphernalia which normal applicants receive. Hence no mention of bonus points or fees waived.

  • Did anyone manage to get that awful annual fee waived?

  • Thanks for this.

  • Question,

    What constitute Spend of $2,500

I don't know if ANZ has changed, but last year ANZ includes BPAY payments.

CBA does not include BPAY payments

    Does westpac include Bpay payments?

    • mark. same question here

  • "The first annual fee will be debited on the 12 month anniversary of the first transaction on your account and annually thereafter on the anniversary of the first annual fee." collect me if am wrong, if paid 150 annual fee, you will get the 150 debited after 12 month of your first credit card transaction?

  • +1

anyone know how does this 0% balance transfer works?
can I make a cheque to myself?

    • apply BT when you apply for the card. I think only non-westpec credit card are eligible.

  • I have a Westpac Global Currency Prepaid Card - would this make me an existing Westpac customer eligible?

  • applied, thanks

  • not sure if stupid question but does the 2.5k spend need to be spent on the mastercard or the amex?

    • +2

Either/both. As long as the total spend on the account is $2.5k

      • Ah cheers

  • Has anyone got their points?

    • i called them this morning

lady said it can take up to 12 weeks

also i cant believe i spent 2.5k in 90 days -_- wtf did i buy

      • Eneloops

        • +1

its actually the one thing i havent bought! and i want to but no good deals anymore

    • Yep!! Just got them. After you meet the spend requirement, they should come through on your next statement.

  • Just received my 50k QFF points :) Great deal! Thanks OP.

    Now to cancel….

    • Did you have any WP cards before that is within the 12mths period?

      • Nope. New customer.

  • has anyone had any luck having the fee waived by being a corporate customer only?
usually corporate customers are excluded but not mentioned in this one
(I was knocked back last year by westpac for the zero fee for all promotion on this card and don't want to open a new account only to be knocked back again)

  • Anyone know what spends are eligible for the $2.5k to get the bonus points? Is bpay eligible?

    • Yes, but make sure that the provider you are paying off accept credit card payments via bpay (you can look up on bpay website)

If they don't accept credit cards then it will charged as cash advance which probably won't count and more importantly will be very costly for you!!

  • Applied for the black and got declined despite meeting the minimum income. Thought it might have been the mortgage repayments so applied for the platinum yet still got declined..

Maybe it's from applying for too many CC this year

    • Similar situation - so far above every criteria it's hilarious and yet… maybe that's what I get for being self-employed. Bank credit assessments are a bit of a joke in my view. I will remember this Westpac!! HA.

  • Or get 1,00,000 QF Points Here if you are willing to spend $395 annual fees and are going to spend $ 5000 in the next 3 months!

  • Would this be the best CC for Qantas flights? I go to SE Asia a few times per year, so I'm looking to save a little dosh. :/

  • Got my latest statement and was advised I got my 50k bonus points.

I only cancelled my previous Platinum card in May 2016, got the Black in August 2016.

    • Did you get 50K points for the Platinum?

      • +1

If I'm not mistaken it was 40k.

It was from the previous Ozbargain Westpac Platinum post from earlier this year.

Edit: just checked my QFF statement and yes it was 40k, credited June this year.

  • when does the 90 day start? is it from approval or date of activation? has any one applied for all 3 and gotten their bonus points?

  • note they recently changed the promo and that the blue Altitude credit card does NOT qualify for the points any longer. my wife got her 50k points on the blue card but she had applied earlier on than me. now a westpac banker told me that my blue card doesn't qualify for the offer. however i applied on Sept 19th for the Altitude credit card and im pretty sure that 50k bonus points offer was still going for the Altitude credit card back then. does anyone still have the screen shot proving the blue Altitude credit card qualified for the offer and can they upload it for me? anyone successful in getting the bonus points on all 3 cards during this promo?

    • Maybe that's why I didn't get the points on my third (blue) card. I applied in July.

    • +1

I just went through the same process for my wife. The promo ended on the 11th of October. archive.org is helpful in these situations - http://web.archive.org/web/20161007143732/https://www.westpa…

The page was updated to remove the 50k bonus on the basic card on the 14th of October.

My wife called the Westpac rewards number (1300 887 820) and they confirmed she'd met the spend requirement, and said that it could take up to 12 weeks, and that if she didn't receive the points by then, to call back up and they'd investigate then.

I just thought it was strange, as I received the points straight away, with the statement that met the spend requirement (although with a black card).

      • thanks thats a very useful link to keep banks in check if they dont want to pay up after changing the terms. i guess ill will for the next statement cycle before calling them again.

  • Hmmm still waiting for my points - will have to call up I guess

  • Anybody know what the easiest/cheapiest purchase that qualifies you for the Qantas club invitations?

I've heard that topping up 500 points works - can anyone confirm?

  • update: spent >$2500 in first statement, received 50k bonus points on 3rd statement.
