  • $450 per quarter with 5 people. 2 adults and 3 kids. I have no gas for cooking, all electric. I am Sydney

I live in Tassie, 3 people about $400 a quarter and 600 or so in winter.

I leave my PC on 24/7 as it's also the house media server and provides a small amount of heating for my room!

  • ACT ~ $300/$350 p/q with 2 adults and a kid and I work full time from home in IT. Evap cooling running all summer too. Gas cooking, heating, and hot water (~$150/$200 p/q).

Double story, pool, 2 adults + 2 kids (13 & 7), 3 phase bore, refrigerative central aircon. Gas heating in winter
Got 7.66kW of panels on a 5kW inverter on the old rebate so still not feeling the pain :-)

Date Period Daily Use Bill Export
    1-Mar-17 63 days 18.2 kWh/d -$640.80 1828 kWh
    28-Dec-16 62 days 14.2 kWh/d -$738.75 1930 kWh

    29-Aug-16 59 days 18.0 kWh/d $54.15 493 kWh

    • Holy crap. Good job on over-supplying the inverter to maximise the rebate.

$750 / quarter for a single person, living on their own …

No gas connected to the property, might be cheaper now that the beer fridge is turned off

  • ACT: $150-$200 per quarter (2 adults). We live in my 3 bedroom townhouse/villa.

  • MEL - 1 person - 1 BR - $40-$45 pm

  • Melbourne.
2 people in 1 bedroom apartment.

    I need to shop around..

Live alone, 3 beddie in Canberra with gas hot water/oven, no AC and no solar. Electricity last quarter was $161 and gas was less than half of that. Majority of my utility bills seem to be made up of connection fees :(

  • I would say, around $250/quarter - 4 ppl. Small apartment though.

  • Interesting thread. At the moment, 5 people, fans, hot water, aircon on for about 20% of the summer averages about $450 a quarter.

I am about to move to a new place (QLD) with A/C, pool, ceiling fans, electric hot water - potentially have 8 people soon. Wondering if I should get a 5kw solar system installed or not now.

  • About $180 a quarter usually. 4.5kWh per day.
2 adults, gas hot water, stove and heating.

  • Roughly 207 a quarter, highest bill after discount $230(Original $293) lowest after discount is 174(original $229), 2 Adults one infant. in Melbourne.Run 2 Panasonic Econavi Split systems(Summer mainly and sometimes in winter to heat lounge and master), Run ducted heating but lately with the infant run it less and bought an oil column heater as it has less effect on humidity levels than the ducted heater, good for little one. also run a Bosch washing machine 4 or 5 times a week. Also other appliances like Fridge TV, battery recharge, 2 laptops, humidifier, remote garage multiple times a day, also have a back to base alarm. doubel story house with 3 bedrooms.

    • Also hot water and cooking is Gas

  • 3 adults and our bills are about $225 a quarter this is with aircon running throughout summer and winter (so the bills for Autumn and spring come down a little). We have gas hot water (heat on the go) and stove which helps.

  • $360 a quarter. 2 people in a town house. Gold Coast

  • $298 the latest quarter ie summer
4 adults & 1 adult only staying about 6 weeks of the quarter
    Solar
6 air conds, Brisbane have been stinking hot would have 4 or 5 air conditions turn on in the evening and weekend.
    Electricity hot water system

  • $225 Last quarter (Dec-Feb) Melbourne, with Powershop

    2 Adults, 2 bedroom apartments.
No air conditioning, we use Dyson fans. Have portable air conditioning but hardly uses it this summer.
Melbourne summer is quite mild compared to last year. We have electric oven that uses up quite a lot of electricity, we're using it less now since we got an Airfryer.
Also, we were away on holidays for 2 weeks in Dec. Same time last year with Powershop was about the same ($210) and we used our portable air conditioning more last year.

We used to pay around $350 per quarter with Energy Australia before switching to powershop.

  • $170 per qtr - 4 adults

  • $220 last quarter Dec - March, live in a house 4 adults and air cond to cool down the heatwave from time to time. no solar.

I have 4.56kw solar on the old (great) feed in tariff. House is in the country so runs a water pump for pressure. House contains 2 adults plus has 7kw aircon that seems to be used more every hotter summer.

The house also has numerous always on gadgets like IP cameras, Nas & regular use of two pcs and a laptop.

The solar which cost approx $15,000 exactly 6 years back has paid itself off a while back (counting payouts and saved/offset consumption from the system) and I currently get around $2000+ dollars in payouts annually so NO bills. Payout is slowly dropping as the electricity company adds more fees every year plus we seem to use the aircon more each summer. We never use it for heating as it rarely gets cold where I live on the Sunshine Coast, QLD. Inverter failed just pre 5yr warranty expiring so was replaced under warranty at no cost.

Even if I moved house again to a newer low tariff setup I would still get another solar. In QLD I reckon it's a no brainer as we get so much sun plus the solar is now so much cheaper. Some of my panels face the ocean due east so the solar usually turns on just pre sunup. Even though the Northern panels hit western shade around 1530 on a clear day the panels pump out some power till around 1800.

  • $55 per month. 1 person.

  • $154 over Dec 2016 - Jan 2017. 2 people. we get our most expensive bills over summer when the aircon is on pretty much all day/night and the fridge has to work a bit harder. we don't use any heaters during winter. gas stove/water, no solar.

  • $30-$50 per month. 1 person. Adelaide. AGL.

It was $90 last month because I used the aircon almost every day, but that's not the norm.

  • ~7Kwh per day, Sydney

  • If you're in Victoria, use the following website to compare retailers for elec and gas. I think other States have a similar website.
A major regulator change is currently under way where meters will be contestable from December 2017. It's called Power of Choice.

  • Last Quarter bill
    4 adults & 2 children

pool, led lights, fish aquarium heaters, air con, laptops, tvs, home theatre, ps4 pro, xbox one,~~~~

$370+ (Energy Australia with 10% discount)

using 3 year old 5kw solar….bill used to be $150 plus, guess solar wear and tear is quite high.

  • 2 adults 2 children in standard size house
Evap aircon, electric stove/oven with gas hot water
Last 4 months = approx $45 inc service charge

5kw solar, have shifted the use of washing machine, dishwasher etc to 'daylight hours'.

  • $330 - 350 for the last quarter (QLD), 2 adults, I think it is about average….

  • Well, I am an IT guy… you know…

I have tried to cut down my usage on electricity but my current minimum requirement is to use a Cisco Router + 24 ports switch (inter-vlan routing) + a ESXi machine (E3-1245V3) running file server and domain controller 24/7 (190W on average). Given this my average would be $250-$450 depend on seasons (with AGL).

I only fire up my lab server - a secondhand IBM x3650 M3 (Dual Hex-core + heaps of RAM) when I am doing DC experiments. The power consumption will be doubled if I use that one.

I am on 1 person in a unit.

  • +2

Mine's about average. In South Australia so the high unit price is offset by the frequent black outs.

  • $630 a quarter
    ~32Kwh per day
    3 adults and 3 kids
    victoria
    gas cooking and heater

  • I live alone in a brand new 3 bedroom house South of Adelaide, and my summer bill was $300 for the quarter. AC on 26 degrees most days, and I've got a high end PC running 24/7 plus other technology on and off.

Hot water is gas so that's not included in the $300 figure.

  • $80-$90 per month in Melbourne with Powershop. 2 adults, 2 infants. Started off at $60 pm with powershop, our usage has slightly increased but their rates have too.. as confusing as they make their rates to work out. Small house, ceiling fans and a 1970's air con in the wall.. + on gas for cook top and heating

  • $350 a quarter, no aircon, 2 people, lots of 24/7 tech, no gas or solar. Pretty much everything has 3+ star rating.

  • $67.61 last month
    $82.69 month before
    $48.79month before that

No concessions, 4 adults, Gas, 2 work full time. Simply Energy. No solar.

  • $350 / quarter for 2 people + aircon (no solar).

  • I've been tracking mine over the past 12 months. Electricy $1300, Gas $300. I live alone.

    • +1

      Per quarter?

Must be in a mansion or have a secret laboratory under your house. Is that you Bruce Wayne?

      • Lol, no, per annum. Pay $100 per month for electricity and $50 per month for gas. Gets adjusted when read every quarter so sometimes the bill can be pretty low on the reading months.

  • +1

We're going on around $70-80 per invoice, that's 2 months. We have 2 peeps in the house. We don't use much though ,I know that for sure, only around 1.5 KW per day.

    • Um…ive just been away on holidays and my daily usage without being home is around 1.9-2.1kwh!!

      • I guess we're a small house so we bought our fridge to be not too big and efficient, its a 420L from memory.

Other than that, microwave, nothing else is constantly plugged in. I did used to always turn off the modem when I slept but now I'm a bit lazy.

The TV I used to switch off at the plug, but also too lazy for that now.

But other than that, I can't think of what else.

Ofcouse I own ipads, phones, rice cooker, toaster, kettles etc…

        • May i ask who are you with and who is your distributor(e.g united energy, citi power etc)?

        • @godzilla123:

          Pacific hydro

          and I think its citi

  • $240 per quarter currently. 2 adults and 2 kids. A/c on all day, clothes dryer and washing machine run daily

    • You must have gas as well.

      • Gas for hot water, 3kw solar system, but no feed in. We try to use what we generate during the day by timing appliances.

  • $480 per month.

2 Adults, 2 kids in Sydney. No gas, electric everything with ducted air & a pool pump running 8 hours per day. On a cheap deal but we use lots of power.

  • 3 - 4 people, QLD, $700 - $800 a quarter.
Aircon/fans on frequently, minimal use of electric heaters in winter, electric hot water, use of power tools and welder.
    A couple of laptops on 8 hours/day, a couple of TVs 4 - 8 hours/day.

Neighbour has solar, always thought of switching, but pay off is what - 10 years?
By that time I imagine selling house and moving on…so lose the pay off..

    • In QLD solar pay off is closer to 3-4 years. Get some comparative quotes. With that sort of usage you probably want a 5kW system or more if it can fit. Around 20 or so panels if 250 watt each. It's very much worth getting solar to cover your day time usage.

  • I live in a CBD building of Melbourne. We are connected via an integrated Network?!? The Kw/h price seems pretty high it's through benergy (never heard of) just curious if others have dealt with this. At work atm so don't have huge details. Around 0.19 kWh and 1.05 supply charge per day. Far as I am aware I have little ability to move retailers as I would prefer to be on Power Shop.

edit: However was told that my supply had to remain benergy.be AFAIK and it's simpler in this scenario as it's one bill. Just after similar stories or ideas

    • Firstly your in a embedded network. secondly in Victoria you have the freedom of retailer. Pm me ill tell you how to change providers but its only worth it if you own the property

  • In Brisbane $240 per quarter for 2 adults and a toddler. We have really low usage though - roughly 5kw/day which I think is half the average of a 1 person home. Only real energy saving thing we have is solar water and we turn the hot water booster off unless it's actually definitely needed. having a toddler and using cloth nappies means using the washing machine at least once every 2-3 days, sometimes more often. Use line to dry them though.

Of that $240 half is for supply fees too.

  • SA - ORIGIN - some solar rebates - not sure how much, landlord offset from other properties.

8 ppl sharing a large double brick house (8 laptop/PC running 8 hrs/day, 2 old fridges, 2 old washing machines, most LED lights, gas stove & hot water, no A/C, heater or pool pump)

    GAS: $230-$250
    ELECTRICITY: $300-350.

It's Ozbargain zone, anyone wanna move here?

  • $360 over summer in Brisbane. No gas - everything electric.

2 adults 1 kid. Big aircon in living room, small one in our bedroom. Used pretty liberally - not to make it arctic, just comfortable. The bedroom one would have been on most nights in that time.

We have a heat pump hot water, i think that's the main saving.

  • $800 for this summer for 2 people in a 2bdr apartment. Aircon has had to be on 24/7 due to the heat of living in a box. Balcony and limited windows do not provide any breeze.

A general quarter without aircon is just less then half of that.

  • About $140 a quarter for 2 people in an apartment. Gas is about the same as we have gas hot water.

  • Lumo
    .. about $300 +/- $50 per quarter; House (2 adults + 1 toddler)
    Melbourne VIC

.. due for renewal, might look at Origin since one of the posters above mention 28% discount on Supply and Usage, I'm on a slightly lower scale currently. But pretty sure it'll get countered anyway. But worth mentioning

    • +1

Discount means nothing to me. I always look at the rates after discount and excluding GST. That is the rate you are paying.

I have seen some companies say they have 30% off, yet their rates are 40% more expensive than their competitors. Make sure to do some research and look more deeply into the rates… the Ozbargain way ;)

      • +1

Yup. I've got a spreadsheet for that. Always important to look at the tariff rates post-discount as although some Retailers may not give discount on Supply charges, but their tariff rates are lower hence a better deal. I'm leaning towards Simply Energy at this stage, but I still have a bit of time to decide.

  • 1200-1400 a quarter. 4 of us.

    • Growing plants? ;)

      • Haha no, my dad is a dental technician and runs a lab from home so that would be the bulk of it. Also 6 different aircons, 4 computers, 4 televisions and nearly every kind of gaming device ever built connected up.

        • Maybe he is really a 'dental technician', have you ever been in the lab or is it off limits?

  • Last winter - $388
    This summer - $155
Melbourne, 4 people, gas cooking and hot water.
    6kw solar panels.
7kw aircon blasting on hot days
3 fridges & all day oven for home business

  • .. just as a follw up, made some calls to Lumo and Simply Energy.
Although most Retailers don't give discount on Supply charges, it isn't all that bad. It's important to look at the overall tariff rates post-discount. At a glance, Lumo's tariff rates seems higher, so the discount will be bring it back to a comparable rate (although I need to work this out in more detail.. in MS Excel..lol!)

  • I feel better about my power bill now.

$120 per quarter with two people in Melbourne.

    Gas kitchen + water storage.

No A/C. Energy saver globes. Electric panel heater + electric blankets in winter.

    • Who are you with and how many kw do u use?

      • Simply Energy on the RACV discount. Average for the past year is 122KWh per month (200KWh in winter months).

        • Thanks for that, I pay roughly the same cost but I only use around60-70 kw per month. I gotta look into simply energy, cheers

        • I've been happy with them. No issues at all. They have a decent smartphone app to keep on top of usage and bills. Good luck.

  • $350 for the summer quarter. Usually a lot lower, around $200 during the other quarters. Most of the bill is the supply charge. We have gas stove and hot water so that doesn't contribute to our electricity bill (170 for the summer quarter). 2 adults, no solar.

We have ducted cooling and have been using that most days. I've reduced power consumption as much as possible. House came with 24x 75w downlights, I replaced them all with 24x Phillips 7w led (7w are a retrofit, all the other ones require a led compatible transformer). I've replaced the 4x 75w staircase lights with 4x 2.5w Phillips LEDs (these ones are straight 240v, no transformer). I've replaced my computer with the Nvidia shield TV (uses 7w, runs android, can browse with chrome, watch shows and movies with Netflix, kodi and plex, all whilst using under 7w vs my 200+w computer. Went for a 5* energy TV and running an amp/receiver in eco mode. Would love to have a 5* fridge but we're stuck with a 3* fridge that came with the rental.

Whilst these do have a bit of a steep cost initially, they pay themselves off in the first year from power savings alone (aside from the TV and amp/receiver).

  • We are actually in credit all year round, we moved into a property which had solar panels and solar hot water. Solar is on the old scheme and it stays with the house not the person who bought the solar.
The previous owner spent the extra on good insulation in the attic. Family of 4 in Perth.

  • 150 per quarter
    3 people

    with dodo, have solar panels.

  • $678 through out summer

  • 4 people
    3 bed room
    We pay quarterly,
    Highest we paid 1317$
    Lowest is 430$

    • $1317? do you like a meth lab or something inside the house?

      • Those 10$ fan heaters in each room. Need to buy the ones with less wattage.

  • $200 quarter, Qld
2 kw solar, only 6 cents feed in tariff
    2 adults, 3 teens
    No gas,daily cooking, no takeaway
    2 fridges
Heat pump on during sunlight only
    Dishwasher used daily on timer
    Washing machine daily on timer

No AC, but 3 fans on

A Quick Run down for you guys of a slow improvement in efficiency as continued renovation.

    4 adults
    13Kw Ducted System.

    Bill - $950-$1100/qtr
Below are steps taken for improvement and the power bill after the work completed (a Slow process)

Installed Insulation on Roof and Wirly Birds
    - Power bill $750

Installed Led Down lights (change from Halogens) 60 in the house -

                                            - Power Bill $580

Changed TVs from LCD top LED(Even though bigger they were 50% more power efficient)
Started turning of Home Theatre Amplifiers at the power point when not in use (Krell Class A Amps Suck Power)standby was like 80w
    New Fridge
    - Current Power bill is now $460

Hope that helps. I was always interested what the power bill differences would be with small changes so i decided to check them.
Obviously the insulation meant the air con would run for a shorter time and the house stayed cool so therefore it wasnt pumping all the time.

    • Good advice, I think i need to change my lighting over (currently using 1960's era fluorescent with 6 of them in my lounge room)

  • 1700 kWh in the last month.
$350 all up including service fees.

We use an absolute fortune of power however we are about to get a 10-15kW system so not a huge deal. All the peak power should be covered leaving a very small off peak balance.

    • What kind of situation do you have where you use that much power?

Pool heating + a very warm climate + large family?

      I can't fathom a household using 14x the power I use in a month.

      • Wonder why the earth is warming at an alarming rate…. :/

  • $862.55 - quarter with Origin
    3 adults. No gas.

Electric stove, aircon, lights are almost always left on at night.
Always uses 1 star energy rating clothes dryer. :(

  • ~$90-120/month for 3-4 people
