Australia is and always will be pay more get less, Our smaller Big Macs show the world where we stand in the pecking order. Fight back by only shopping on OzBargain, there is no other hope.

    • Aussie stores are greedy, even if they gets free AKG premium headset and 256GB SD card, they won't sell with bundled with S8, they probably will rip it off and sell it separately. That's same goes for all Aussie car resellers, they charge customers when manufacturers just bundled aircon,auto-transmission, power wheel etc…

      • +6

Aussie stores are "greedy" because you want a higher minimum wage. It goes both ways.

        Have a read of https://www.rba.gov.au/publications/bulletin/2012/jun/pdf/bu…

The truth is while retail gross margins look high, after business expenditures the net profit margin are sitting at more or less around 10% of the cost of the product.

So tell me Kochigachi, are you willing to open a store, slave yourself away sell 5000 dollars of goods a week only to take home 500 dollars profit?

While it may be a different story for larger retailers, in the broad sense Australia is still an expensive place to operate in. If rental/lease and transport costs in Australia were lower, along with a lower minimum wage then by all means things will be cheaper.

        • Thats just too much to read!

        • +1

@LilJedi: just look at the pretty graphs at the middle of the pdf :)

        • +1

We'll see how well that argument holds up after Amazon comes in and DESTROYS AUSTRALIAN RETAIL.

(I say this with tongue firmly planted in cheek btw)

        • +1

@zzyss: I doubt Amazon will destroy Australian retail if they have to hire locals to staff their warehouse. However, Amazon can maintain very low margins, even losses. Also you might think it is a good thing having Amazon destroying Australian retail, but don't forget the amount of people employed by retail (http://www.aph.gov.au/About_Parliament/Parliamentary_Departm…). Over 10% of people are employed in the retail environment. If retailers go belly up a lot of unemployed will then hit the welfare system hard.

You will need to find a balance between pricing goods appropriately and keeping the economy afloat. The truth is if companies don't make money there will be no expansion. No expansion will equal no job growth.

Now think with your brain and not with your heart. Amazon may shake up the retail market, but it may not be for the better. Either way we will see when they come to the Australian market in 2018. Keep in mind most of the time the price of goods on Amazon aren't necessarily cheaper once you do the conversion and add GST.

        • -1

Fyi, ONLY Aussie retailers are doing this to rip off more customers, in other countries they offer more to secure existing customers and get more new customers and even with more competition than here. Aussie retailers get smaller margin? No, it's probably fabricated to pay less tax, Aussie retailers get more higher margin than these of other country's retailers, and many Aussie retailers don't even stock products they advertising to sell, so there's answer why some Aussie retailers are struggling, they buy the stock in tiny qty, which means they can not make deal with manufacturers to receive discounts and Aussie retailers can only get their stocks from another greedy Aussie wholesalers. There goes the entire corrupt industry, no wonder they cry out loud against to eBay, Amazon and other foreign retailers.

        • @Kochigachi:

Why are you comparing Australia to other countries, if other countries are so good, why don't you move there. It is like comparing buying vegetables in India vs buying it here.

What makes you think Aussie retailers are the ones ripping off customers? You got proof? As far as we know Samsung Australia is calling the shots. Go complain to Samsung and leave the retailers and businesses alone.

Until you have worked retail or have experience first hand you won't understand the struggle small business owners have, especially in a retail environment.

@Kochigachi, so you edited your post.
Now, have you got evidence of any of that? Or are you sprouting some BS from your own conspiracy theories.

You literally have zero understanding of supply chains. What company will keep an inventory of 1000 or more phones, in fact what small business operations buy millions of dollars of stocks to have it sit there? There is too much risk overstocking and then if you cannot sell you cannot return to the wholesaler for the amount you bought. Why do you think retailers sometimes sell out of season/date stock for wholesaler price.

We can look at chemist warehouse for example. Most of their products and medication are significantly cheaper than independent chemists that isn't run by a chain. How can they do it? They literally buy hundreds of pallets of goods at a time. Now back to your independent shop, how is he going to sell all that amount? Where is he going to store it?

As I have said all you want is things for dirt cheap without thinking about the consequences.

I bet you are the type of person that works for someone else that wants high pay as well right, or if you have your own operation you underpay your staff. Screw everyone else except for yourself right??

        • @Kochigachi:

Fabricated to pay less tax… really.

Cash in hand = okay you can fudge things and pay less tax. However as it stands most payments are done over electronic methods which is easily tracked by the tax office via TFN, you have to be brain dead to fudge your accounts when everything can be matched so easily.

Tell me when was the last time you bought something online and paid cash? Most places do not even accept cash on delivery and if you get a tax invoice there is zero evasion. GST is paid to the tax office and everything is regulated. It is primarily multinationals have easily accessible way of moving money offshore to tax havens.

The stocks I have on multiple Australian companies have all paid their fair share of corporate tax, that's why I get fully franked dividends.

Sprout less BS and actually talk some sense.

        • @azukay:

Why are you comparing Australia to other countries, if other countries are so good, why don't you move there.

If it were that easy to simply move to another country, you wouldn't have so many illegals arriving by boat. There's just that pesky problem of getting PR / green card in another country. They don't just hand them out when you ask for one.

I have no idea who's ripping who off, but telling someone to just move if another country has things better is not a good counter argument.

    • Makes the aussie deal useless

I think people should wait for grey imports.

  • +2

Hmm this or wait for 20% off the good guys

    • +5

Just don't pay more than 1K for the new S8.

      • Even 1K is expensive. I would only pay that price if I can stack 3 AMEX $100 off HN offers, making it $700. And even that is stretching it.

        • You might change your mind after you watched the promotion video.

1K is not too expensive when Xiaomi Mi Mix cost $787 without warranty.

        • @PW:

When I say 'expensive' I don't mean it's overpriced. It's priced about what the market deems it is worth. It's still expensive though, and more than I want to be spending personally.

Even a Ferrari at 50% off is expensive. It's a bargain, but expensive to me.

  • +3

Don't know about you folks but I don't think the S8 is a major improvement over the S7 Edge or even the S6 Edge+. IMO the ones who own those phones should save their money in 2017 and wait to see what 2018 will bring.

    • +3

It is a huge improvement over the S6, which was lacking MicroSD slot and Waterproofing.
There are a decent improvements over the S7 too, but if you already have an S7 then it probably isn't worth the upgrade.

      • +1

I don't think the processor is a reasonable upgrade for a next generation flagship. RAM stayed the same (unless you buy 128GB model being released in China and Korea).

I personally wouldn't buy one from S7, even as a S6 user, I am thinking whether I should go for next Note line up or S9. Not saying S8 isn't an improvement, but later model probably will show bigger improvement for buck in my opinion.

        • +3

Holy shit, China & Korea get 128GB of RAM and we only get a measly 4GB?! Robbed!

        • @KLoNe: They are releasing 6GB RAM, 128GB storage models in those two countries. I don't think that will be available for other countries from what I've been hearing.

    • -1

Aesthetics: 10 - Gorgeous. Specs: 6 - similar to last year bar the CPU (who cares). Software: 0 - Same shitty TouchWiz.

      Final score: 16/30 - C-

      • +2

I don't know what version of TouchWiz you have experience with but the Grace UX on the Note7, S7 and S7e devices running Nougat are way better and lighter.

    • +1

I really do think the s8 looks good, I am actually truly excited about having one on my hand

      • +1

        Aim at the wall :p

    • It will just be more of the same.

Samsung's prices go up, not down.

If you aren't happy with S8 I would suggest switching brands instead of waiting for S9.

  • +3

No IR blaster makes SB something something

    • +1

      Dont mind if i do!

  • Is this gear VR the same as the current S7 one?

    • No.

    • +1

Apparently it's designed to fit the S8 better

Also comes with a pointer controller like Google Daydream

    • +1

      and it's USB-C connection

  • +1

This or Xiaomi Mi Mix for 600 less

    • band 28..

      • +1

Doesn't make a difference for me fortunately :)

Apple stocks went up after the S8 reveal.

    Typing from my Nexus 6P.

    • +3

Apple stock has been going up for the past few months. No idea why. They haven't released anything decent during this time.

Mind you, it goes down when they do release a new product.

      The stock market. Go figure.

    • -1

guess imma look into the g6 and other phones, the s8 doesnt seem to offer too much besides the design

      Typing from my Note 7

      • Oh uh….

        • Stand clear.

        • hopefully it doesnt go off

      • +1

G6 does look good this year. LG lock down their phones though don't they? (No custom ROMs)

        • havent owned one before, but that would defs put me off, thanks for mentioning that

  • Would of upgraded to the S8 if the camera was better… but its all but the same.
Time to wait for the S9.

  • hope they have a similar deal when the Note 8 gets released

    • Was hearing on the radio which the guy stated there won't be a note 8 this s8+ is going to be a 6.2 inch and be packed with a lot of goodies without home button as well by looking at the website looks promising :)

  • So they're persisting with the terrible sounding single speaker. Enjoy cupping your phone lads.

    • Why would you cup your phone? You only do that when there's a lot of noise around you that you don't want transmitting to the other person, not when the speaker isn't loud enough. The speaker piece when you're chatting is on the top part of the phone. How would you cup the top part of your phone?

Single speaker is only an issue if you're watching movies or playing music on it, and you're using the speaker instead of headphones. Those people annoy me. When talking, that speaker is not even in use, because it's the top speaker (ear piece) that's being used. There's no point having two speakers for the ear piece. You're only hearing it from one ear.

  • Make sure you get the original case too.

      OMG they look absolutely horrendous!

    • That thing offers no protection and is so pointless.

  • Let's see what Nokia next flagship model will be now

  • The future is here now!! Let's all rejoice and shout it in your streets. The Samsung Galaxy S8 had come swinging. I wish I could avail those heavenly freebies. Still madly in love with my S7 Edge though.

    • +1

      Keep the S7, awesome phone.

  • We are getting the new Gear VR bundled. but do we get AKG headphones with the mobile?
