Part of Telstra, reckon would be ok in city but might struggle in the country

      • In nsw at least, telstra is the only provider who still have coverage in rural areas.

  • My mother failed the credit check though she currently has a plan with Telstra.
I passed without even having a job.

    Honestly do not understand this.

    • I failed the credit check as well…how do they even determine ur rating if ur a new customer

    • You should ask your mother to get a free credit report to check if there's anything going on with her file.

      • where from?

        • Credit savvy and getcreditscore. Those are the two biggest providers and woolies must have used one.

    • did she use the same address as billing for delivery ? i got rejcted 2 times with perfect rating till i went instore and the staff discovered this

I'm so disappointed. Showstopper for me is no international roaming possible. I don't necessarily do inbound/outbound calls, but definitely rely on inbound sms when travelling. Shame! A great deal otherwise.

  • Couldn't resist this deal. Thanks to OP.

  • which case to buy now? any recommendations

    • I like Spigen cases, especially the thin-fit one as I like the phone to remain as thin as possible.

  • Wonderful price for S8, I guess cannot use gift card to pay monthly fees.

  • This would be a great deal for me if I wasn't such a data hog.

While it might happen very rarely for me when I travel outside the city/metro areas, I'd be worried on woollies 'part' of Telstra network. I'd want the full flexibility of the network, not bits and pieces allocated to the MVNO.

4GB data is actually really data offer; that's ME coming from an ex Telstra plan where they only gave me 2GB + a bonus 500MB. Yep, 2.5GB. Generious hey? I struggle to stay under it. Telstra wouldn't know generosity if it kicked them up the @ss.

The phone has lots of great features but I'll be passing. It's untested…unreleased! I'd first wait for a hands on review, benchmarks, charging, battery life…and a year on from their last release and they are STILL only 3000mAH? That's crappy. I so see people jumping the gun to grab a free VR headset and taking the chance with the deal, which is priced very competitively.

I seem to like features in phones which most companies have long forgotten and no longer rate - LED notification light (tell what notification you have without picking up and looking at the phone unlocked) and infrared sensor are just 2 things I personally rate. I USED TO care much more about the lack of FM radio which dropped off many years ago; except most times I tried listening to radio stations you are referred to a website to USE DATA and listen to the podcast, so that quickly became a non-issue. I'm looking at the Huaweu P10 Plus, which looks like an awesome phone, except for the backwards design flaw off ront facing fingerprint scanner and lack of backlit menu/back buttons (now its in the UI, activated through the settings). Goodluck with those who get the S8 phone. I really hope you like it…you better! As otherwise…you're stuck in a VERY expensive contract should you decide to cancel and pay it out within 2 yrs!

    • they have a "LED View Cover" that might interest you re notifications… another cost though.

      • I'm sorry what's that?

    • Why stuck with it? If you really hate it, just sell the phone on eBay for not much loss and buy another phone outright. Why cancel and pay out the remaining contract? Lol

      • The why not buying outright? Otherwise you have the phone contract, sale of the phone to deal with plus the cost of buying another? Lol

        • -2

This not not that hard to work out lol
Buying this phone outright when it's released will cost $1300+ for Australian stock.
What's wrong with having the contract? $35 per month on Telstra network is not unreasonable.

Cost of buying another phone will largely be funded by selling the S8 if you're not happy with it for whatever reason.

Do you need more help with such a simple issue?

  • Man..4GB is too little. Can't do YouTube at all for that amount of data. So sad I want this deal but 4 or 8gb is too little. I use around 25gb per month. With all the youtubes and music streaming.

    • +1

Don't watch your videos at 1440p or 4k.

If you want to watch youtube, do it at 720p or even 480p. That will get you quite a lot of video for 4GB.

      • I can't see or change the quality on 3G. Is there a way?

        • +1

In the youtube app, go to video settings and select 480p or 720p.

If you watch your videos in 1080p60 or above, you're going to burn through data quick. 60 fps will use up double the data of 30 fps, and 1080p will use more than 4X the data of 480p.

Turn down the quality. It will still look good when the screen is that small.

      • I don't usually get wifi much unless at home.

  • What CPU is used for this? Is this Snapdragon 835?

    • +2

I think Exynos 8895. SD835 is for the US market.

    • Early benchtests and reports is that the Exynos is actually faster than the snapdragon - only slightly though. We can expect them to be pretty much the same.

  • it this a duel sims phone ?

    • I have the same question here. Seems no one knows it yet.

      • The AU version won't be. Asian regions will have dual sim, but keep in mind the microSD card uses up SIM slot 2.

        • 3 years on and they STILL can't figure out this design catastrophe. Samsung and others will literally cut off their legs to spite their feet!

        • +1

          @roosta:
I'm actually using a Galaxy S5 Duos that does have a dual-sim and the SD card slot. Just got to get the outside Australia. I believe the country of origin for this phone is UAE. The S8 in AU will not be dual sim. May be wait if another region will launch an S8 Duos?

The one year old Galaxy S7 Edge 32GB is still selling for $1248. This is the nearest analog to S8, and S8's base model is 64GB, not 32GB.

If you're going to wait a year to buy S8 when S9 is out, you'll find it a few hundred off, but it's not going to be $600, no way. You can't even get last year's model for $600 right now.

        • +1

No one would be paying that price. It's listed for $1099 on TGG ebay site and they have only sold 1 this year, possibly coinciding with a 20% off sale.

        • @unity1: Buy or not, that is the price it's selling for. So if you're looking for it to be half price by waiting a year, it won't be.

        • +1

@lostn: That I agree with you, I was only trying to highligh the more realistic selling price, not the overinflated HN price.

  • +4

    This is really good value.

How can anyone resist if they're in the market for a new phone and the s8/s8+ piques their interest?

    $69 x 24m = 1656, - 101 cashback = 1555, - 50 (?) for the vr = $1505.

    A 4GB plan on the telstra network would cost 30 a month x 24m = $720. This means you're getting a phone that retails at 1349 for 1505 - 720 = $785.

I'm not even sure if the Samsung s7 edge has dropped that low from an Australian retailer.

  • Why does it keep saying: Unfortunately we are unable to verify your identity. Please enter your details exactly as they appear on your chosen form of ID.
I've tried both drivers license and passport

  • Can this phone be used with telstra sim??

        Thanks for that.

        • +1

That's alright, not sure if it's even on the website but a rep confirmed this in the comments

        • @phew: Thanks!

        • i'm pretty sure all postpaid handsets are unlocked

        • @bghunter:
Not always especially true with Optus. However, all you need to do is call them saying you're going overseas and ask them to unlock and they'll do it free. If you're on prepaid, they'll also do it on request, but for a small fee around $30. I even once called to get a second hand phone unlocked for a mate that was locked to Optus unlocked since I was going to use it for my account (or so they thought).

  • what am i doing wrong. i went through the whole deal and after i click pay now with my CC details it says "There are no items in your cart at the moment. You can get started by selecting Continue Shopping". I click continue shopping and it loads the S8 front page again in a tiny frame in the window…

  • Orchid Grey or maple gold?

    • Without being able to see them both in person, I can't tell which one I want.

I'd take white if they did it, but they don't. The silver looks a bit tacky, but it might look different in person.

Based on pics, I'd go with gold.

  • +2

Can anyone confirm EXACTLY what the difference is in terms of coverage compared to full Telstra?

    • +2

      Telstra
      Vs
      Woolworths

      Basically, where:
Telstra offer 4GX, Woolworths is 4G on the 700Mhz (B28) band
Telstra offer 4G, Woolworths is 4G on the 1800Mhz (B3) band
3G coverage the same on both.

      • Thanks for the info. Where does this info come from?

        • As per the links, from the company websites.

      • Thanks! But what does this actually mean for users?

        • +1

Basically, on a phone with B3 & B28 (most phones sold locally), you will get standard 4G coverage in areas where Telstra offer 4G and 4GX. So unless you require super fast service (which considering it's only a 4GB plan might prove counter productive!) you should be fine.

As always, best practice is to go get a $2 sim and test it for signal before signing up.

      • what band does Telstra offer 4G on?

        • Telstra 4G is on 700MHz (B28), 900MHz (B8), 1800MHz (B3), and 2100MHz (B1)

          Telstra's 4GX service is on 700MHz (B28)

      • Do Telstra Prepaid plans get 4GX speeds?

      • So basically you end up with slower speeds but same coverage?

  • +2

    Thumbs up for

    S9+ 2019

    • You mean the 10.8" sized phone? Yeah that will fit in my futuristic-sized pants pocket. :)

    • I think you mean S9+ for Q4 2017/Q1 2018

  • +5

If I order 2, will I get cashback for both or is it just 1 per account?

    • I ordered 2 separately and has to cause porting number. Works.

I cr site through to woolies finish.
I go back to cr site and do again.

  • Vodafone has it for $86 a month.
With a little haggling I got them to offer $80 for the 4gb plan and $81 for the 8gb plan.
They said "woolies is definitely losing on these plans".
So with the cashback its still hard to pass up the roughly $20 per month saving.

I really like vodafones international roaming for $5 a day.
But I REALLY like OTA updates and not having to wait for vodafone to push them.

I know this is a stretch, but has anyone with Vodafone asked them if they can match this deal and had any success?

    • +2

Used to be a Vodafone salesman and I am 90% sure the discount offer you received is the best thing they could do. Vodafone hasn't been making any profit over the past 4 years or so. In fact, I am sure they are still losing hundreds million dollars each quarter.

      • Thanks for your input man. Pulled the trigger on the woolies deal.

    • Would that $81 be for the S8 or S8+… despite this being cheaper… I prefer Vodafone for their network in Sydney.

  • Does staff get 10% off?
