        • Mine is a 3D tempered glass protector, but like you, I have no experience with edge phones (would have taken a non-edge model if they offered one).

I really suck at applying screen protectors, dust always gets under, so it's always a nervous affair. I wish they would ship the phone with one pre-applied. Actually they do, except it's black or it has logos on it, so it's unuseable. They do that to make you buy one.

I bought the clear-view standing case, used ebay $10 off CHOCCY voucher. Still too expensive.

But have you seen the RGB LED case that costs only $10 more? So sexy.

  • Does anyone know if the new Gear VR with controller is the same unit as the old Gear VR, or if it is a 2.0?

Will it work on my S6?

If so, I want to use it with my S6 because I don't want to keep removing the S8 from its case and replacing it every time I want to play. I can keep the S6 in there until its battery dies and needs charging.

But the connector is Type C for S8 and MicroUSB for S6. Hmm.

    • Apparently it does work with s6 according to this article http://newatlas.com/samsung-gear-vr-2017-hands-on-review/486… as it uses usb adapter and only has very few minor changes from last years model.

The new model works with not just the S8 and S8+, but also the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Note 5, S6 and S6 Edge+. (Note that last year's Gear VR also works with the Galaxy S8 phones, using the included USB-C adapter that was originally intended for the Note 7.)

      • Eh? Does the Gear VR unit need cables and a power source? I thought this was meant to be a wireless setup compared to the other VR?

        • Doesn't need cables as it uses the phones power but i think you can plug it in if battery getting low. More info here: http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/gear-vr/

        • @phew: Does the Gear VR have its own battery, or will the cable just charge the phone?

        • @lostn: The cable will power the Gear VR but it doesn't have a battery that can be charged and it won't charge your phone unless the gear VR is not in use. So if using the Gear VR while plugged in it will pretty much just not use any phone battery but won't actually charge your phone. When not plugged in the Gear VR will be powered by the phones battery

      • Apparently it does work with s6 according to this article

I think the article is inaccurate. I have unboxed the Gear VR and found that the connector is Type C and does not seem removable, nor did they provide a micro USB connector to put in its place.

        Looks like it's S8 only.

        • +2

The Gear VR that I received had a Type C connector fitted already but it is detachable and a Micro USB connector was bundled in the package.

        • Check again in the box

  • Anyone got recommendation for screen protector for s8+? Thanks

    • My first edge display phone but reading on whirlpool, glass screen protectors don't work well on edge displays so if you don't want to risk wasting money, get a film protector.

      • Cheers

      • Can you elaborate on why this is so?

Do film protectors also cover the edges?

        • +2

Glue is only applied around the borders of the protector thus there can be a very small gap between the protector and the actual display in the middle. Also they don't work well with cases because the protector goes all the way the edge making the case push up on the protector, lifting it. There may be protectors out there with glue in the middle but I haven't found it. Apparently if manufacturers do that, then you lose touch sensitivity on the display.

I bought a glass screen protector but a 'casefriendly' one from Tagg on ebay. I have my phone in a Spigen Neo Hybird case and can let you know how the screen protector goes once I receive it, if you'd like to know. The case case friendly ones differ from the full protectors in that they don't extend as far along the edge.

        • @happyadventurer:

Apparently if manufacturers do that, then you lose touch sensitivity on the display.

I find that hard to believe. On a flat screen the glue doesn't affect touch sensitivity. Why would it here?

The case case friendly ones differ from the full protectors in that they don't extend as far along the edge.

Does it not cover the entire edge? Theoretically the case shouldn't cover the edge, so if the protector reaches the edge and no further, it should fit? If there's a gap between where the glass ends and where the case begins, dust is going to get caught in that gap.

I received my Galaxy S8+ today and had also purchased a Nuglas tempered or 3d printed screen protector which I purchased on Ebay for $17.99.
I have a Spigen Slim Armor CS (the one where two credit cards fit in the case)

Unfortunately I can confirm everything that @happyadventurer says is true in practice.

          1. There is only a thin glue strip around the edges (and not nearly enough-my screen protector has already fallen off twice).

          2. The centre of the screen protector lifts so there is a air gap between the gorilla glass and the protector, most likely caused by a small amount of pressure being pushed from the case sides (and no glue there). Its particularly bad at the location of new home button and at the top for some reason (which are probably the worst two places as the home button doesnt always register being pressed and the top settings slidedown doesnt always register).

          3. Im worried that over time the screen protector will cause micro abrasion on the gorrilla glass through thousands of presses through the air gap.

          4. For those not using a case, since there is no direct bonding of the tempered glass to the gorilla glass I would imagine a significant drop may still cause the Gorilla Glass to shatter as you are not getting the double layer of glass (Im no expert here though guys-just an observation).

In summary I wouldn't by this iteration of the nuglas screen protector again (although they have been ok on flat displays before). I reckon you would need a glass protector that has has a fully covered glue back surface or a just a film.

Im not sure what the rhinoshield will have or if anyone else has come across a glass one with full glue backing?

          @Junior74: Thanks for the report.

I guess I'll have to order a plastic protector. But will these also protect the edges?

        • @lostn: Im worried about the film ones too for that reason, I'd imagine even if they did, I'm worried they will lift from the edges, over time. I noticed even the manufacturers thin plastic film that came on the phone didn't cover the edges.

        • +1

@Junior74: Poor design by Samsung if you ask me.

I find the edges gimmicks anyway. What can you do with an edge that you can't do with a flat screen? Drag horizontally for extra functions? Pretty sure they could have incorporated that into a flat screen. Long press at the edge then drag?

        • @lostn: Not too sure about what I said about the glue but I read it somewhere. b=But I am also curious to know why they don't have glue over the entire protector.

I don't believe the case friendly protectors cover the edge but I don't think dust is an issue. My galaxy s6 had a protector on it and it didn't go all the way to the edge of the case I had no issues keeping the borders clean. Anyway I think that's the trade off if dust did get in there. Which is no big deal for me since I always clean my screen multiple times a day to get oils off.

But I haven't got the protector yet so best just read up on the long whirlpool threads: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2621118

        • @happyadventurer: The S6 case does not snuggle up next to the edge of the screen protector, so cleaning off any dust build up would be easy. If there's a narrow gap between case and screen protector, dust will be harder to clean off and will get stuck there.

        • @lostn: True, see how I go in a few months :)

  • Anyone getting the red tinge issue the screen? I'm seeing issues particularly on the edges of the screen..

    • apparently, decent amount of people have received this red colour on their screens. Read Here

  • I Pre-Ordered my s8+ on the 3rd………….no email notifying that my phone has been dispatched yet. Sniff* ='(

  • I received my S8+ yesterday which I ordered on the 2nd April, but never received any email notifications at all. I did call Woolworths though yesterday morning to ask about the phone and they gave me confirmation it was due to be delivered on that day. Overnight service to Perth. She said your tracking number is your order number and you can put that into the StarTrack tracking website. Worked for me. Phone's great btw.

    • hmmm, maybe my one hasnt been shipped yet, tried to track using the confirmation number/ order number

    • Did your order number you put into StarTrack start with 000? Mine was 000279**.

      • well my order number is WM000793***, i tried using the order number, den i tried 000793***. still not working

  • Anyone else logged into the Woolworth mobile account on the app yet?

I ordered the S8+ on the $69 deal, but its showing up as $84 per month, no billing yet that I can see, but wondering if its just me and i need chase it up or if no one is showing the $15 per month discount yet?

    • Mine shows the same

      • Thanks for the reply. Good to know it isn't just mine then.

        • same for me. hope this is just a mistake

    • Contact them to change it i did

      • i just contacted them and they advised they will update it. not sure when though

        • Will they update that for everyone or just those who ask?

  • In the woolworth mobile it says $84 so no discount has taken effect yet. But it should be less. As that was the orginal price for the plan. Not $84.

  • I activated my sim today. In 2 hours, my previous service is disconnected. The new sim isn't working either.
The sim no. In the email is slightly different and long now. Anyone else having same issue?

    • Working now. Awesome phone and taken the plan value, comes out to be cheaper than the outright phone.

    • my wife have a different situation, started porting, after 10 minutes, told service activate, however the old telstra sim still working, and new sim can make calls too, just can't receive calls.

      • +2

Porting process takes time. Outgoing will be available before incoming calls.

      • It can take up to 4 hours to do porting. Closed on Sunday though. If any issues, will be sorted on Monday.

  • I just spoke to a Woolworth mobile online, and they checked my plan. In the app it says $84. And have now changed my plan to $69 a month. And it will take 8 days before the changes will take effect on the Woolworth app. So i guess if you dont contact them you will charged $84 a month untill you tell them to fix it. Which is a bit of a scam on there behalf. This should be automated. So should not have to chase them.

    • Seriously? I will wait for first bill to come and see how it goes. Not rushed as it is 24 months contract.

S8+ Phone is an awesome phone. Length it approx. same like a normal 5.5".

    • -1

So troublesome…seems like they're trying to rip off unsuspecting customers.

  • I dont think i received the free VR content voucher in the box. Can anybody show me a photo of how it looks like ?

    • Use the mySamsung app (need to create an account) and there should be an option to get the code (which in return you use in GearVR app).

The code will allow you to claim either the Entertainment or the Gaming bundle.

      • thanks man, i realized it a few minutes after posting here.

Any recommendations on whether to get entertainment bundle or the gaming bundle ?

        • I've chosen the entertainment one (as it has a Monzo VR model building which could be used by my kids). I'm not too much of a gamer, though the space shooter game looked nice.

I haven't tried the GearVR yet (just installed the modeling app) - will try it tonight though. I'm curious how it compares to the Vive I have at home.

        • Have played Lands End and it's quite good, also end dead space and drop dead look good so I'd go with the gaming bundle.

    • By using the MySamsung App, the Welcome banner or splash advertising, one of the pages links you to the redeem page to display your voucher for redemption.

There should be a total of 4 scrolling banners for the redeem page to be available. My nephews S8 only had 3 scrolling pages and didn't have the redeem page, I asked him to chase it up with Samsung.

  • Phone just arrived but I am having issues with sending mms messages. I am getting the error"mms not supported by network". Any suggestions on a fix?

  • OK I've played with mine a bit.

I bought a tempered glass protector from aliexpress and mine does not seem to interfere with the case (I have official clear view standing case). Although the cover does not seem to stay magnetically shut and is loose. Not sure if that is the protector or not. The case's sides do not push the protector up or loose. On the positive side, it was easy to apply this screen protector. I had an easier time putting it on than I've ever had.

I can confirm however that the adhesive is only along the four sides (includes top and bottom sides). On the screen itself is a gap which makes the touch screen insensitive. This is bad enough that I cannot access the always on display's touch screen when the cover is closed.

I've ordered a film protector now and I'm hoping it will work better.

Someone mentioned the charger will be the same color as your phone. This is not accurate. I have Maple Gold phone, but the charger and cables are all black.

    • This screen protector here is a tempered glass that is case compatible and does not affect touch sensitivity, for those looking for one. It's made by Olixar.

      Purchase here

  • Mine arrived Friday morning, but unfortunately I couldn't be home to collect it. I was away until today, so I'll pick up first thing in morning.

  • Has anybody compared the AKG earphones to Xiaomi pistons yet?

    • I had a pair of Xiaomi Hybrid IV's, I guess you can sorta say its a Piston. But generally speaking the AKG are IMO have greater clarity (less muddy in high and mids) and lack in the bass department. Very neutral, although earlier Pistons were said to be quite bass heavy? I got used to the bass on my IVs though, but it was more than what I was used to

Just want to let you know guys that you can redeem ur oculus free gift voucher from the mysamsung app in galaxy 8. From there you can get a redeem code and have to put into oculus app. You can choose either game pack or entertainment pack. I just choose game pack and they are awesome.

    • +1

Same here. I could not earlier find it in oculus app. Then googled it which pointed to Samsung website with details. Also selected game pack ( again thanks to google).

  • Is anyone having issues with the screen flickering occasionally? I am seeing horizontal lines that flicker for a few seconds, not sure what's triggering it.

    • I have not. But I'm not sure if I have the red tint problem. When I was out, it looked a bit red, but at home, I don't notice it.

  • -1

If you miss the delivery from star track you'll have to pick it up from the depot if you want it straight away. Redelivery option takes another 1-2 weeks.

  • +2

God I love this phone. I'd just like to thank OP once again for posting such a ripping deal. We all really lucked out with this one. I don't think we'll see a similar price/plan until years' end.

    • +1

We got $65 pm with 7GB Optus around mid year, then again late in the year. It is possible, but yes, it's a very good deal for a preorder. You're not likely to get too much better than this (if at all) for the rest of the year, and you get one at launch.

  • +1

My service is still working since a week on my previous sim. I have not activated my woolworths sim yet. Should i be waiting for it to get deactivated by itself ?

    • Depends how soon you want to switch over.

They said it would activate eventually, something like 2 days after you receive it. But mine didn't until I did it manually.

      • i am still using my old sim….works fine….will wait for the data to get over and then switch if doesnt happen automatically :)

  • Can we not send txt overseas?

  • With Gear VR is it possible to put the lid (the samsung cover) back on when the phone is inserted? I can't seem to get the lid on.

I have noticed that while I am using Gear VR, the phone doesn't stay securely fastened. It can fall out a bit which loses focus. I can't seem to put the lid back on unless the phone is removed. I assume the lid is supposed to be off when in use? I have to use my left hand to secure the phone.

This thing chews battery considerably btw.
