Not a bad price but it has to be said these prices are only dropping as the new wave of Xperia handsets are launching this month so they're trying to clear old stock

    • Launching this month? didn't they just release some in Feb? they have more coming?

      • I meant the phones announced in Feb are actually releasing this month into stores (except XZ Premium)

    • what?

    • +7

You can get the 64gb dual sim version for around 380 via import though of course you lose out on official warranty.

    • +1

So how does dual sim work? Can you choose to be with two different providers - Telstra and Optus then choose which telco you want to use to make a call?

      • +1

        Exactly

      • +16

Yes, 2x phone numbers, 2x accounts, say work-n-play, wife/mistress etc

In basic terms like having 2 x phones

Just make sure that the 2nd. SIM is not 2G as that wont work much longer, check b4 buying.

All Chinese and most Asian market phones are dual SIM by default, we get screwed here

Optus/Testra/Voda hate them, they wont sell you and put you on a plan with one, they don't want you making calls on a cheaper plan.

BTW, China has quad, as in 4 SIM phones

        • +31

BTW, China has quad, as in 4 SIM phones

Guess the amount of mistresses in China must be high lol

        • Yes, double-check the 2nd SIM is not 2G.

2nd BTW, Telstra has already turned off 2G network.

          https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/12/telstras-2g-network-is-of…

@montorola: It's stressful working there too.

        • +1

          work-n-play

Meh. I work and play simultaneously all day…

          wife/mistress

          …okay, sold!

        • +1

          @dzf:

and Optus in WA and NT. Rest of the country August 1.

          Voda in September.

        • @silverrat23:

          …okay, sold!

Same here, mate do you know any plans with unlimited talk and text at night? ;)

        • wife/mistress

Careful sending text messages to the wrong sim number or the wife might do a Lorena Bobbitt on your dingle berries.

      • One sim for your wife and other for your gf ;)

  • How is the camera on this, is it up there with the S7's/iphones?

    • +1

Reviewers seem to trash the camera

    • +3

My prior experience with Sony camera's has been quite good. If you run it on manual, and control the ISO to be low, you can take incredible photos.

    • no, not at all.

  • +3

How does this compare to the Moto G4 Plus?

    • +4

This should be a better phone. This is an upper midrange phone whereas the moto g4 plus is a midrange phone. This is also more expensive.

    • From DXOMark mobile camera reviews the Motorola G4 Plus scores very well compared to most of the Sony phones, only the premium ZX and X5 score slightly higher then the Moto G4 Plus. The Dual Sim is 4G and 3G so very good for dual SIM in Aussie or when travelling.

  • +5

It's lower than it was, but…. it's about double the price I paid for my Xiaomi Note 3 last year, having the same CPU, RAM and resolution. Only the camera is better on this one.
My experience with Sony ROMs was awful on the Z1… they released several ROM's that had major problems while I owned my Z1, and Sony support was useless.

    • +1

Very happy with the software on my Z5 Compact. Looking forward to getting the Nougat upgrade very soon…

      • Got it in March

        • Damn…was that local stock? Mine is a grey import.
What are your impressions, besides the fact that it's more of an incremental upgrade.

        • @elektron:got my z5c from.kogan. Just wanna a new phone every few mths.

    • +1

Phantom touch was a goddam nightmare on the Z1 Ultra. Thankfully they upped their game since.

  • Something completely unrelated but I heard from a contact of mine that JB got scammed big time over the past weekend (was it the weekend before?) Apparently a bunch of Credit Cards were stolen and used to purchase gifts and were redeemed at JB online.. From what I was told it was in the vicinity of 250k!

Anyone else here something like this?

    • +5

      On the first of April?

      • Yeah I thought it was some kind of April's fool joke too, but nope. It was legit…

    • +2

That stuff happens all the time, the main way criminals cash out on stolen credit cards is by buying electronics with stolen credit cards and then selling the items. It happens on an industrial scale.

      • Yeah my contact was explaining to me that JB will have to foot the bill.. Not good for business…

        • +5

Your contact? What…Are you like CIA?

I'm gonna up the game and start calling my mates assets.

        • @Tuhan: nice try AFP

I have the dual SIM version of this phone and it's fantastic. Fast performance, FM radio, NFC, fingerprint reader, onscreen buttons, and great build quality. The camera is not as good as a flagship Samsung or apple but still decent.

The best part is that the model that JB sells (f5121) gets android concept software which means it gets the latest version of Android not long after nexus devices.

A great buy at this price.

    • +1

      Hows the battery performance ?

      • +1

Not bad, but not great. Probably get about 4 hours on screen time per day. I make it through the day with 30% battery left.

        • Good enough.

  • is this waterproof?

  • That's a blazing hot deal!!

    • -5

Yeah a bit small. Even my Xperia XA Ultra comes with a 6" screen.

    • +16

Comments like this don't make a great deal of sense to me.

Not everyone is looking for a phone bigger than 5 inches, just as not everyone is looking for dual cameras, or fingerprint scanners, or dual SIMs, etc etc.

    • +9

Uh yeah except for people that want a small 5" phone.

But other than that it's not meeting some imaginary standard you made up.

To think in 2011 the first Samsung Note was widely lampooned before it's release for having a 5.3" screen. Six years ago.

    • What is today's standard?

    • +1

For us guys it's becoming increasingly more difficult to find a phone which fits in your jeans pocket. We don't carry handbags.

    • +1

"Today's standard"? I didn't realise people's hands have gotten bigger over the last couple of years…

  • How does this phone rate in comparison to samsungs and iphones? I'm looking to change up and this seems like quite a good deal but haven't really heard much about them before?

    • It's better than an iPhone except for the camera, but wouldn't be as good as the new Galaxy, but then it's not a fair comparison pricewise.

      • -2

Huh in what way is it better than an iPhone especially 6+ and newer it would have no chance

        • +4
          • Still no expandable storage
          • Still no NFC for Bluetooth / Wi-Fi connectivity
          • Still can't use it as portable hard drive
Still low screen-to-body ratio in this day and age
          • And now no headphone jack to use with your favourite headphones…
          • Ridiculous price for what you get
  • +1

Got this for my sister from eglobaldigital but the dual sim variant which has 64gb built-in. Its good enough for her, also she is appreciating android!

  • +2

For what it's worth, I've had a Sony Z2 for nearly 3 years and it has been faultless. I find the camera excellent. Only drawback is mine only comes with 16Mb RAM although I do have an external memory card.

    • +1

I take it you meant 16GB storage? 16 MB RAM is what my 133 MHz Pentium had in 1997… It's crazy to think my phone has more storage and RAM than that computer did…

      • Yes, you are correct - 16GB. I'm showing my age.
My first external drive held 10Mb of storage and cost over $1000. :)

    • Same, used it for 2 years and it's flawless. Great camera. My wife is using it when I bought a Lenovo.

  • +1

This phone or the Motorola Moto G4 Plus @ $369 from MobileCiti online?

I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy S6 and want to change to a budget android phone under $400.

  • +1

what's the best camera in a phone for around this price bracket?

  • Wondering, how does this compare with the Oppo f1s?

  • Worth an upgrade from a Huawei P8 Lite 2015 model? Huawei's firmware annoys me to no end (especially considering the Australian variant never got Marshmallow) and the lack of NFC is a bit annoying as well.

But still, is this a significant enough upgrade to warrant $400?

  • Do you think the Xperia X or the Xperia Z3 is the better phone?

The Xperia Z3 is obviously the older phone, but the specs look better to me, for example the CPU.

    • The Z3 is a great phone but as it's older it no longer gets software or security updates. I still use it as my main phone but am now looking to upgrade as the phone does show its age a bit.

Camera software is also better on the X however the Z3 has waterproofing going for it.

  • I heard from a reviewer that this phone has issues with recording video footage. If you try to record more than 9 minutes of video, the phone overheats and the camera app shuts down.

These Sony phones are overpriced for what they offer. While the front is glass, and the back is aluminium, the sides are plastic.

I'd rather wait for the new Nokia 3/5/6 coming out in the next couple of months at this price-point.

  • +1

I have the compact X which is the same as this. But 4.6 inch and I love my Compact X, best phone I have used in ages.

    • How much u spent on x compact ?

      • $479 at DWI

        • How long take them to send to you since made the order?

        • +1

          @duodeta: 4-5 days

  • Thanks OP - bought one for the girlfriend. What cases are you all buying for your new phone? I've seen some online but they will take 3 or so weeks to get here - anyone know where to get cases in store in Sydney?

  • How is this not better?

$347 (-$5 if you enter email for coupon) and also 64GB not 32GB from android enjoyed. Delivery charges I'm sure and will take a little longer.

  • If you're an Australian Unity member you can also get 7.5% off JB Hi-Fi e-gift cards

  • How does this compare to a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 guys ? Please I need advice as to repair the screen on mine (300$) or get a new phone, possibly this one.

  • Except for the camera, it's similar to the xiaomi redmi note 3 pro I got for $200ish…

Also note unlike the Xperia X Performance, this model is not water resistant

  • is this worth it compare to the Sony Xperia XA ??
