Any idea what the 'eligible purchase' is for the $100 gift card? The T&C doesn't seem to explain it.

Also, is there a way to get a balance transfer and make an eligible purchase without incurring interest/fees on the purchase? From what I understand, you are slugged interest on purchase if you have a balance transfer.

    • +1

No, this used to be the case, however, law changes stipulate your payment first goes to the balance attracting highest interest , so you are safe to use the card for purchase with BT

      • Disappointing they can't rig it separate somehow, most these big Co's seem to be able to find some loophole in the Acts to avoid tax etc.

I do 95% of my food & fuel with them, = points etc, although the new 7-Eleven lock it in fuel app might be a game changer with fuel.

      • Have you got a link for this? I'd like to read more about it.

        • +1

          @AllWins:

This will only apply to credit contracts approved after the 1st of July.

Looks like it's not providing a protection for the existing card holders or new cards approved before 1 July. However, Woolworths credit card's conditions of use says they're already applying payments to highest interest rates first:

What happens to payments we receive?
Payments are applied to amounts shown on your last statement of
account, first to the part of balances to which the highest Annual
Percentage Rate applies, next to the part of balances to which the next
highest Annual Percentage Rate applies and will continue to be applied
to balances in descending order of applicable Annual Percentage Rate.
Within each plan, payments will be applied in the following order:
interest, fees, principal balance and insurance premiums (relevant only
          within your Purchases plan).

          @Sharp: July 2012

        • @AllWins: OK Thanks

    • To be honest I'm not sure what the "eligible purchase" is.
For me if it happens its simply a bonus, more chasing the BT to get rid of a high fee go-card before the int free period finishes.

Not that I'm aware of, I'll use another card for purchases until that clears.

I'm not good with this kind of thing, just thought I'd share the deal I found through my research, others more knowledgeable maybe able to help with Q's, perhaps more tomorrow though after those in the Eastern States wake up etc.

      1. Eligible purchases will be anything other than gambling websites, cash advances and things like that.

      2. No, there isn't a way to totally eliminate interest on purchases while having a balance transfer. You will be charged interest from the day you make a purchase. The way to minimise that is to pay it off as soon as it appears on your account online

      • +1

Hmmmm… So is there a minimum amount for the purchase or will even a $1 purchase net you a $100 gift card?

        • +1

That's what I'm doing. Happy to pay interest on a $1 item.

        • I asked them on the phone and even they don't really know.
From what I understand, any purchase and any amount that is not an excluded type will be fine - $1 at your local supermarket for example.
I have just been approved for this card, so I will confirm this once I get it.

      • You mean from day 56 since its 55 days interest free?

        • +3

It's more like.'up to 55 days interest free' you don't get 55 days interest on every purchase. It depends when your billing cycle date is.
Very few people would plan their purchase to be made on a particular date to gain full advantage of 55 days interest free.
A lot less would pay their card in full to be paying 0% interest.

^$100 Woolworths eGift Card offer is available to new primary cardholders only who apply for a Woolworths Money Everyday Platinum Credit Card between 12:01am AEDT 1 April 2017 and 11:59pm AEDT 30 June 2017, are approved and make an eligible purchase on their Woolworths Money Everyday Platinum Credit Card by 11:59pm AEDT 31 July 2017. Your $100 Woolworths eGift Card will be sent to the email address provided at the time of applying for a Woolworths Money Everyday Platinum Credit Card and sent within 8 weeks of the eligible purchase, provided that you are not in breach of your credit card Conditions of Use and your credit card account remains open. Eligible purchases exclude balance transfers, cash advances, cash substitutes and transactions for gambling purposes.

Last sentence describes the limitations. It is typically any retail purchase.

    • Eligible purchase can be for any amount (I bought a single banana :-)). Or at least it was when I availed of this same offer in June last year; applied for a BT, bought a banana and received the $100 after 3 statement cycles if I remember correctly. Although, it wasn't a e-gift card in my case, they just added the $100 to my Woolworths Rewards.

    • You can always top up your credit card as soon as you get it, so your purchase's going out of the topped up balance, and the BT (normally processed some days card activation) will come out of the normal card balance.

  • How about purchase first then bT later?

    • Don't believe it would work that way

    • In theory if you make all your purchases in the first month, as you don't have an outstanding balance you should still get the interest free days, but it may not be calculated like that once a BT has been processed

      • That's right. They did not charge me interest before BT, but advised that they will start charging daily interest after BT. Beware!

    • Why do you need to do this? Just purchase something cheap.

  • I cancelled last year… what would be the chance of getting another $100 gc if I applied?

    • +1

Can I cancel my current one now and apply later? This deal is on until end of June.

  • Hey guys, long time listener first time poster.
i have a friend who has long been in horrible CC debt. I checked her Credit score tonight and she somehow has quite a good score. I want to get her to do a BT to a new card in order to stop paying her ridiculously high interest payments and with the 0% BT fee this seems like a good option?

Any advice on this? I know this isn't a financial advice site but i really want to help her out and can't see any negatives with this deal?

    Cheers Ozbargain!!

    • +2

14 months no interest is a no brainier if you can get high enough credit limit to cover the debt but check what this interest rate will be after 14 months compared to her current credit card interest rate.
If your friend had 15K of debt, she would typically save over $3,500 in interest within the interest free time. The key is for her to use this saving to reduce her debt down for example this would be $11.5K and hopefully in the 14 months she would have paid much more of that down.

    • +2

If she's having trouble, another option is Citibank. They have 0% on bt for 24 months and $49 annual fee for the first year. It goes to 149 annual fee after the first year and interest goes back up to cash advance rate after the period (around 21% at the moment). It depends on how much her credit history will be able to get her for the most part.

Main reason I've been using Citibank is because they can give you the money via cheque. This way you can request a little more than you need so you have that extra buffer for bills after closing your credit card, just to get you started.

      • Didn't know you could do cheques with Citibank, thanks!

      • got a link? all Citibank options I see is with balance transfer fee.

        • +1

Sorry, I forgot about that fine print. There is a 1.5% balance transfer fee unfortunately. It is on their city rewards platinum card. From my experience with them, it is better to call them up rather than apply online. Simply because over the phone, they ask better questions than the generic ones on the website, and the amount that you can borrow can be slightly higher as you can explain to them that you would be using one of the balance transfers to close one of the other credit accounts.

From my experience, usually before you get to the end of the 24 months, they will throw in a few other offers your way. Offers I've received involved keeping the interest down to 4.9% once the 0% has ended, increased credit limits, etc. You will get calls about offers unless you choose not to receive them. If you don't get calls, all offers will pop up when you log in to their Web page and click the offers tab.

One downside that they have is that they will only let you use 80% of the approved lending value for a balance transfer. Ie. If you ask for and are offered 10k, they will only let you use 8k. For this reason, I would recommend applying for as much as you can get. If you don't need the extra money, you don't need to use it for your balance transfer. But it's always helpful in case your existing banks try to slap you with extra fees.

One advantage with receiving a cheque is that it opens up your options a bit. For example, some banks will only let you balance transfer a credit card, but not a loan. By receiving a cheque, you can essentially balance transfer the loan to zero percent for 24 months. For some people, this may be worth the 1.5% balance transfer fee. For some of my friends, this helped them get out of high interest car loans.

Downside of the cheque option is don't expect to receive your money straight away. Upon receiving your documents for your application, approval can take 7-10 business days and then upon requesting a cheque, it can take another 7-10 days.

When I first signed up with them, I'll admit I was nervous as I found out that they don't have a physical branch in Adelaide. But I have not had any issues with them and I've been a customer of theirs for 3 years. Over the phone they've provided better service to me than banksa (I've called up banksa on several occasions and they've omitted details on the phone, hung up on me several times, opened accounts without my permission, struggled to close said account, closed the incorrect account, put me on hold for 30 minutes and then realised I was still on the phone, etc).

Sorry about the massive info dump. I don't work for Citibank. I've just had to decipher through a lot of the fine print with banks in the past so I figured I'd post all the important stuff that comes to mind.

    Yawn…

    • +2

Sure, that's a bad deal. But anyone who cares about international transactions would get one of the cards which is good for that. And you only need one…

      • +1, OS travel isn't the purpose of this card for me.

  • +2

Do these cards come with price protection and free travel insurance? I've never been bothered using a cc.

    • +1

Would also like to know which card is the best for price protection. Heard good things about Coles.

      • +2

No price protection on this Woolies card, but 90 day insurance. The Coles cards have 2 years price protection, but Coles cards have (are going to be) handled by someone else so I wouldn't be surprised to see that changed as it's a great perk and must cost them a bit.

It can save you heaps if you can be bothered keeping track of price drops.

        • Yea I forgot all about having that available on my CC, too busy to keep track of price fluctuations etc, might be different if I had an office job or not working.

  • There are additional benefits on earning 3x and 2x points with woolworths gang of brands. Also seems 10% off for the first shop of each month, although I didn't quite understand what "selected weekend" means. Overall looks like a well designed card from their marketing, finally!!! Wonder if they replaced whoever came up with that stupid Woolworth dollar idea.

    • +1

They send out an email to cardholders 1 week per month (their choice) that says "10% off this weekend".

        • Perhaps you could if you bought in Perth, things look like there starting to pick-up, maybe a good time to get into the market, build some equity…

      • perhaps someone with more knowledge of the industry can shed some light here, but I don't think this matters… i've signed up to more credit cards than I can count and cancelled them again, shifted banks, moved around.

I think the important part for 'credit ratings' is that you pay your bills?
I think they are mainly only interested in how many cards aggregate you have still current when you apply???

        Maybe I'm wrong

        • it seems that also the number of applications can affect your credit score
did you check yours ? getcreditscore.com.au

        • @Gooddeal21: I know a few people that work for banks and have asked them these kinds of questions.

While we do not have a "credit rating" in Australia, many banks do use Veda, who provides the credit history AND their own credit score. Banks however do not necessarily take the score seriously and will each have their own system for working out risk (or more importantly how much money they can make from you).

I have also had about 8 credit cards in the past few years and had no issues with getting a home loan or new credit cards. Only if you DEFAULT on a payment is it a definite negative.

  • Also, looks like $6,000 is the minimum credit limit for this card.

Can you top up your opal and get the 10% off every month?

  • Would it work if I did a BT to a card that isn't in negative balance putting that card into positive balance, transferring the positive balance and say leaving it 1 dollar still in credit, would I get slugged with anything?

    • Yes your cc will end up w positive balance. It then depends on the bank if they can transfer the balance over to ur accounts or not

  • If you have a woolworth cc, you also occasionally get 10% discount in shopping at woolies (including recharge). I get emails once in awhile.

  • Don't do it.

          @Mr Gradgrind: Cool story.

  • +2

Woolworths Financial have been rejecting a bunch of people for this card multiple times including myself. And that's with having no debt, very high income and savings and solid credit rating. So I just don't bother with them anymore.

    • This is just for the low to medium income people

    • I applied at the start of March and was rejected.

I did have errors on my credit reports. One company put three enquiries on my report for what was supposed to be a single application (which was approved).

So I had four enquiries showing, when it only should have had two showing. I also had only had a very short history ( < 3mths since first account ). They rejected me.

If you have few enquiries, and all the other things, and you still being rjeected, then they are purposely going after below average credit risks. I guess it makes sense. It involves a $100 gift card and 10% off a shop every month. They have to get back money. They need people that aren't going to just pay the full balance every month. They need people to carry a balance and pay interest.

I probably won't bother applying for this. Have already been hit with one enquiry from Woolworths/Macquarie (which could have possibly been approved if the other company had not botched my report, and put two extra enquiries on).. No point getting hit with another enquiry to be rejected.

    • +1

You may well be right - I just applied and was rejected, possibly for similar reasons. Very unclear what their income threshold is.

  • +1

If you are getting this card and doing a balance transfer:

transfer amount is paid in full.

  • +3

Careful with approval, if your record is good your application will get rejected without any feedback provided.

    • +2

      Yep happened to me before

I am regularly approved for bank ccs but for some reason this mob rejects me

      • +1

The same here, I have had cc with most providers and have had quite a few over the years. My application got rejected with this mob.

        • +2

Correct. Maybe they are after ppl who are not able to pay off their cc in order to make more profits? But it's a risky slope as they might just ignore the debt altogether.

    • Wow, if there are 3 up votes on this comment, it must be right.

    • Did you get conditionally approved after applying for the card?

  • +1

Sorry not worth it for just a $100 eGift card.

    • That's your opinion. I'd rather transfer my credit card debt for a year and keep it in my offset account (effectively earning 4.3% tax free) than the alternative.

  • There is a $49 yearly fee after the first year. I have a credit card with Bankwest with no annual fees, I'm guessing there must be others as well? I would never get a credit card that charges an annual fee…

    • does your bankwest card have 14 months interest free balance transfer?

      • it did have some interest free balance transfer when i first got it years ago, can't remember how long though. I don't have credit card debt and don't intend to.

        • +1

thanks for ur input in the deal in any case

Coles Rewards Mastercard is a pretty good deal if you chase points. $89 annual fee, free additional card holders, No foreign transaction fees and 2 flybuys per dollar spent - equivalent to 1% cashback or can be transferred to Velocity 0.87 (or 1pt per $ during promotion, Etihad 0.8 or Singapore 0.64 (or 0.74 during Velocity promotion) points. Some good insurances too with the platinum flavour

        • +4

          @wallysta:

Not sure if other credit cards do it as well, but one thing I dont like about Coles Mastercard is that they calculate points on a purchase by purchase basis. So your actual cashback rate can be significantly less than even 1%.

          Example:

Say 1 point per $2 spend.

You make two purchases of $3 each.

Each purchase will give you 1 point (since there is only one WHOLE $2 in $3 purchase). So you will get 2 points. The correct way of calculating it should be a total statement level. (i.e. you spend $6 , 1 point per $2, therefore 3 points).

Take an extreme example. Say you make 1000 purchases of $1.99 each, and you are on a card that is 1 point per $2. That will get you ABSOLUTELY NO points, even though you spent basically $2000.

        • @random12: I guess the way around this will be to spend evenly, not in odd numbers. But that is not a small task. Besides, the coles card, according to Wallysta, gives 2 points per dollar. Irrespective of even or odd, so winning. Now, if only we could get rid of the $89 fee, I'm keen on the Coles Card!

        • +1

          @lordra:

The coles cards only pay on whole numbers of points, just so you know.

You will get less than the rate of 2 points per dollar. You will not get fractions of points.

        • @random12: Many other credit cards, including Amex MR, calculate points in the same manner. It's not unique to Coles. Assuming your average is $x.50 over many puchases, you will 'lose' on average 1 flybuys point ($0.005) per credit card transaction with the Rewards Mastercard (2pt/$1). At a ˜$20.50 purchase, that's a 2.5% reduction in your rewards (40pts instead of 41).

  • For anyone that applied, does ww ask for payslips?

    • Not for my application….just got conditionally approved so WW sending out a letter and I need to present ID at post office

      • Ah kk sounds sweeet. I might just apply for a reallllllyy high balance transfer then and positive balance my other NAB credit card and cash it in the bank for 3% savings with ING

    • The did for me.

  • I just started ANZ credit card application last night. Have not submitted any document. Now i want to shift to WW card. Do you think just mere submitting ANZ application will have my name in their record and I wont be able to take balance transfer with them again?

  • +2

Hi all. Ive had this card and it was great for the balance transfer so I saved a bit of interest by leaving my money in my mortgage offset account instead.

The tricky thing is that because it's a 14 month free interest free period, I had forgotten about the annual fee and got slugged with it at the start of the 13th month.

Since I've paid for it, I've decided to keep using it for another 12 months. It's very handy for it to be linked to Woolworths Rewards. First shop every month I get 10% off my entire shop (except gift cards).

Oh and with regards to making an eligible purchase when you have a balance transfer amount on the card. I made a purchase and was charged interest on only the purchase amount so I quickly paid the purchase amount. Your BT amount will be interest free for the whole 14 months but any additional purchases on the card will attract interest. You can't pump money into the card first because it will reduce the BT amount so bear that in mind if you intend to go for the $100 egift card.

EDIT: Their call centre is based in the Phillipines so there's an accent barrier to overcome when you communicate with them but other than that I found it ok to deal with them.

    • Were you able to accumulate enough points for any Shopping card?
And Do you wait for an email saying your next shop will give you 10% off or is it always first shop of the month gives 10% off automatically?

      • +2

Well it isn't my main card (I've got a CBA Amex/MC rewards card for free via my home loan with them) so I don't really use it for points nor have I done the comparison.

With regards to the 10% off, I normally wait for the email just in case but from my understanding the promotion email says it's regularly the first shop of the first weekend of the month.

    • Can you explain how the balance transfer works? Do they just transfer to a bank account?

  • Sounds like a good deal for a points based credit card.
But read all the fine print and it starts to look really BAD!
Mostly it definitely DOES NOT CARRY THE USUAL BENEFITS OF A GENUINE PLATINUM CARD.
Very high interest and foreign exchange fees.
$35 late payment fee as if the high 20% interest is not enough
So for a Platinum card its a TERRIBLE deal.
Eligible purchases - 3 points for Woollies branded products only. 2 points at Woolworths owned stores.
So that is very limiting. The rest are only 1 point.
And what is the conversion of points to $$$$. Is it 10,000 pts for $10?
Even for a credit card its a terrible deal really
