  • Would it be considered a new membership if I'm leaving my parent's cover and taking out my own insurance?

    • Yep that's counted as a new membership! :)

  • You you have a 6 months free deal?

    • No sorry, this deal is for 6 weeks free.

  • Yep that's counted as a new membership! :)

    • 6 weeks from day one or after certain waiting period?

      • from day 1 of joining

        • +1

          Great

So just as a backup for a month, get the policy and cancelled after 30 days

  • +11

Meanwhile, they screw their current customers with ridiculous price hikes…

    • +2

that's petty much every single business known to man.

    • +5

Yep it is getting ridiculous, I don't know how they manage to say only an average of 5% increase per year when I have been paying an average of close to 10% increase per year. Seriously thinking about dropping cover after my child is a little older. Better off to invest the money saved elsewhere and take it out when actually needed.

      • or you could just change funds

        • Other funds aren't that much better since I am on a corporate plan with medibank which provides discounts. But the price difference is narrowing, eventually either cancel or change funds.

      • the 5% quoted is basic hospital cover.

Extras and top cover have even higher increases

    • +3

So I'm subsidising new customers ……

      • looks that way…

    • 100% agree with you.

    • Health insurance providers aren't legally allowed to offer incentives to existing customers. I can't give you a source I just remember reading about it once… no incentives to be offered with an exception for attracting new customers.

      • +1

Health insurance providers aren't legally allowed to offer incentives to existing customers

But they are legally allowed to increase prices way above the cost of living increases ???

        That makes sense… NOT

  • 6 weeks free can apply to Extras only cover, Hospital only cover

Almost worth having an accident to take advantage of this.

    • +4

until you find out how much of a gap you must pay…

      • +1

New products have 100% back on optical and general dental!

        • -1

Scab was referring to having an accident. Does eye surgery or broke teeth come under optical and general dental ?

      • apparently you have to shop around to minimise your gap payment. something that the average person wouldn't normally do (depending on the work required)

  • +1

Wow, those prices look really expensive compared to BUPA and RAC/HCF

  • C B F calling. Why can't we get a quote online?

  • +1

NIB is cheaper, and that's saying something.

  • Can be used along with the flybuys offer of 70,000 points?

    • terms and conditions says "Not available with any other offer", but you're welcome to ask the consultant on the phone when joining and see what they say..

  • +1

Medibank is damn awful when it comes to cover. They have rejected multiple claims of mine in the past. Went back to Bupa after that. Wasn't worth the "saving" they offered.

Tip: Take this offer to Bupa. They'll match it over the phone.

  • More expensive than I'm currently paying even after the free 6 weeks.
    Thanks but no thanks.

  • Is this a good deal? I pretty much just need Physio cover for about 3 months. My quote is saying $10.30 a fortnight with $500 on Physio.

I have no idea about health insurance.

    • I suggest use the online chat (or call up) and a representative can recommend a suitable cover that makes it worth it for you. You will also pay less if you go to a Physio that is partnered with Medibank (i.e. a "members choice" provider)

It's still a rip off compared to other health insurance.

thinking of dropping my health insurance, only ever use it for dental and using the money saved to go to gym etc. :-/ it was more useful for tax avoidance, but now I have a family and no longer fit into that salary bracket no more.

    • I am dropping the "Extra's", but keeping hospital cover. Insuring for Extra's is not worth it, unless you have a large family with 12 kids who don't brush their teeth and all need glasses.

      • I only ever use my Extras. 2 free dental checkups and cleans, plus 100% back on claims.. actually my wife is only on Extras (no hospital cover), she gets 2 free glasses a year and 70% claim back on dental. she gets more use out of it then me. If you dont visit the dentist yearly or wear glasses then I can see the reason to drop it.

You can drop your health cover for a maximum of 1094 days without it effecting your lifetime loading. Keep this in mind when dropping your health cover as you can still re-join and it won't effect loading.

You can suspend health insurance and this won't count towards the 1094 day limit either

      source: http://www.privatehealth.gov.au/healthinsurance/incentivessu…

      • thanks for the handy tip. Would have been better if you could do multiple lots of 1094 days :P ha but that would be too good to be true.

Would you drop your car insurance because you don't have accidents and don't claim?

If your circumstances have changed then change your insurance, even more important if you have a family

      • Not a valid comparison, because we are still covered by public insurance, whereas dropping your health insurance could mean paying for 10x Mercedes S class sedans which you accidentally drove over the top of.

"Cheap" insurance cover is often worse value than "normal" one.

      • Makes sense

      • I did drive for 17 years without insurance, currently on 2nd year of car insurance due to wife learning to drive now.

Our public system is great compared to other countries. Private health insurance has its uses, but at the same time going through the private system you still pay ontop. Public hospital will see kids as a priority. Ive had surgery in the past before I've had health cover, done by a private surgeon in a public hospital with a 2 week wait so I just had to pay for private doctors consultation fees (think I was only out of pocket but $100 or $150, public medicare covered some of the fee)

theres too many variables, everyone has a different situation. risk vs benefit, some ppl benefit more than others etc. It would be better if my whole family needed glasses though.

For those in the market for health insurance, especially "extra's", keep in mind that:

    • There are limits per individual treatment
    • There are yearly limits per treatment type
    • There are lifetime limits per treatment category

It's near impossible to work out what you actually get back until after the treatment. The published schedules showing benefits per category can be quite misleading.

    • [There are lifetime limits per treatment category]

sounds like a racket akin to that of book makers banning people for being too lucky

      • Pretty much.
I find it misleading that it would say things like "Benefit for general dental: up to $1,000", but if you get your teeth cleaned you are still out of pocket.

This article is really worth a read:

In an extraordinarily candid assessment for a top bureaucrat, Private Health Insurance Administration Council CEO Shaun Gath told News Corp Australia extras cover was an “irrational” purchase for most people because the premium paid was more than the benefits derived.
“In a world of fiscal purity that (buying extras insurance) probably doesn’t make sense,” Mr Gath said.

    • Yeah, it's rort isn't it?

By the time you need the insurance the payout is not what you had expected at all.

      • +1

Yeah. Admittedly I'm not the smarted person in the world, but evidence suggests I'm not the dumbest either. If I can't figure out what benefit I get out of it, then others may struggle as well.

        • +1

you have to get the item code for what you want to claim for, and shop around for the cheapest deal and figure out the gap before you get it done.. hopefully your not in a hurry at the time :P

      • +2

or sometimes you have to pay more than what a public patient would pay, for not much difference in health care. :-/

Friends had baby in private hospital, think they had to pay $5,000 (cant remember if it was a shared room for 2.)

My wife had baby in public hospital, and we had a large private room to ourselves that was newly renovated.. I was only out of pocket $77 for 2 day parking fee. (wife was in a hurry, so I couldn't scout around for free parking :P )

        • +1

Yeah, I think I might splurge on the parking under the circumstances :)

  • Tried this, need OP full name to be processed, what !?

    • Try Hannah Montana

      • +1

Yea right, the lady i spoke with sound too rigid.

    • Don't bother. Medibank is terrible. 30 min wait for each phone call. Online member services used to allow you to clain and self serve, but now all it does is let you view your limits. I'll be switching to Bupa. Cheaper too.

      • +1

But this waives the 2mths waiting though, just want to get my dental paid and subscribed to this for a month then quit. Can I in bupa?

  • Hi
Is it for hospital and extra cover only?

Or i can have just extras only?

    Thank you!

    • You can have extras only, but we need her full name. Medibank call staff is not easy.

  • I just called but its alrdy expired?

    All good?
