I dunno about you mate but I prefer DDs ;)

    • +1

AA batteries would be infinitely better than D's.

Agree. You can get AA-to-D spacers on ebay pretty cheaply though & you can choose from:
1xAA per D spacer (4xAA in total in this radio)
2xAA per D spacer (8xAA in total in this radio)
3xAA per D spacer (12xAA in total in this radio)

I guess which one you choose would depend on the age-old 'weight-versus-battery-life-versus-personal-eneloop-availability' trade-off. I'm kind of excited my D spacers are going to get used.
      :)

  • Got one :D

Own this radio. Purchased a few years ago and still going strong.

One of the few radios with AM. Normally digital DAB+ radios only come with FM and DAB+ band.

    • Good sound. Through Loud, I find it not loud enough to hear in another room in my place at maximum volume Compared to the Yamaha Micro Hifi with DAB+ radio which is far louder.
    • Scrolling text on display is quiet slow.
    • 15 preset memory are divided up into 5 quick single preset memory buttons on top. The remaining 10 are accessed by pressing the preset button on top, scrolling through the memory presets and then pressing the scroll button to select the highlighted memory/station.

Also note that although this is made by Sangean. Same as the DPR-45. Warranty is not covered by them. This they say is because the model has been parallel imported by DSE/KOGAN. Hence a grey import with different model number. So must be returned to them.

    • Would you say it's worth buying at $29?

      • +1

He may have paid $239 for it. You just brought up his rough past with this radio. :'(

      • For the price its good.

Wouldn't buy it again if it were more expensive.

        Also:

        • 7 light intensity levels for baklight didply. Unfortunately no auto dim after a certain period so always stays on unless set yo off where it comes on for about 10 seconds then turns off.
        • Not a real concert but clock also only displays in 24 hour time.
    • Are you able to pick up sen 1116 AM in melbourne with it?

      • Im in Sydney but if your in Melbourne I'm sure you would be able to pickup that station on AM if you were unable to receive the DAB+ signal.

    • What's the frequency range of AM mate?

      • +1

AM on this is 522-1710 kHz. So supports the extended AM band from 1610-1710 kHz

        • Thanks mate, much appreciated

  • Ta.

I absolutely had to buy one! $28.52!

Now we need a deal on Eneloop battery converters AA to D

    • +2

Now we need a deal on Eneloop battery converters AA to D

After a quick search…these seem reasonable prices. All depends on how many cells you want per D spacer.
      $1.89 4pcs 1xAA to D http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4Pcs-Battery-Adaptor-Holder-Black…
      $2.59 4pcs 2xAA to D http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4x-2AA-to-D-Size-Battery-Holder-C…
      $3.29 4pcs 3xAA to D http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4pcs-3x-AA-to-D-Size-Batteria-Con…

These prices always change, particularly when linking direct to the sellers like this but it gives you some ideas on what to search for.

      • Great work.

Now to decide which one, The 3xAA seems the safe choice but the 1xAA seems sturdier.

Radios are not big power users and I wont run it loud.

        • +1

At these prices you can probably sample them all & decide what you like best.

The plastic of the 3xAA model feels quite rigid to me. Also nice to see real springs for the batteries in this model. Feels pretty good overall. It surprised me in a good way (compared to the others) but of course using the 3xAA model means using 12xAA batteries for this radio, which possibly isn't everyone's cup of tea, so the other models might be more preferable.

        • +1

Buy the 3xAA adapters, SamR. They are about a third of the price that they were, just two or three years ago and you don't have to use three, or even two, batteries in them, if you don't want to. The batteries are just in parallel.

You may want to use three cells in each, at some point. Digital radios, even when not in DAB mode, are just little computers. Allowing for similar speaker-size and amplification, they will I reckon tend to all use a bit more juice than traditional AM/FM radios, at the same volume.

        • +2

          @Tas:
Thanks for the feedback guys !

        • Very good point about the parallel connection allowing 1 or 2 cells per spacer too.

As for prices, you could still find them this cheap years ago, but as usual it all depends on the seller and the exact search terms. It took me a while at first to stumble on the right terms to find the cheaper sellers. There are still plenty of sellers that sell them for $$

  • +1

Tempted but is it needed in the era of internet radio. I would listen to classic FM.

    Someone convince me.

    • +4

It's ridiculously cheap, what could go wrong?

    • With you on that one… I gutted an old radio and stuck a Bluetooth spkr (wired to) a random smart phone… best kitchen radio ever, esp. with the excellent ABC radio and pocket cast apps..

    • +2

      Ended up getting it

  • no brainer for this price Thnx op

  • Thanks. Bought one for the garage!

    Awesome deal, thanks!

Can anyone tell me why this radio is so good? Will I be able to pick up city based radio stations in the country (I'm thinking about an hour out of Melbourne)? Does it have better/stronger signal and clarity to a cheap AM/FM radio? Sorry for noob questions…

    • +3

Based on reviews I've read, it looks likely that if you're in a poor reception area you'll get better reception with this radio than others - and with a good signal, the audio quality will be excellent because of the higher quality speakers (this is a $200 radio, after all).

You might even get DAB+ with this radio, even if you're not in the official reception area, if you set it up right. You'll get all the Melbourne AM and FM radio stations plus a few digital only stations. AM stations will sound a lot better if you're into that sort of thing.

  • +4

    At $28.52 i couldnt resist.
The extra discount made all the difference.
    Thanks OP

  • could anyone comment on the sound quality? i have a $10 kmart dab speaker radio thing, but the speaker is worse than one from a gameboy.

i notice this unit has bass & treble knobs, does it actually produce any bass?

    thanks

This is a video of the unit receiving German DAB radio. To my ears, it sounds like the speakers are very good (even with a poor quality DAB source).

Just note that Australia uses DAB+ which is higher quality/efficiency, so if it sounds tinny it's probably not down to the radio itself.

      • +2

Except we run at lower quality to provide more stations which means more money to the government. Don't expect high definition stations anytime soon or even ever.

  • +3

I guess its come down quite a bit since this:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/175095

  • OK. I get it- this has good reception.

But what about sound quality - is the sound crisp and clear? Is it good for classical music???

    • its going to be mono anyway thru the main speaker

if you're serious you're using the 3.5mm stereo out to a proper hifi setup

  • Ordered. Thanks OP. Great to find a DAB radio with AM.

  • Anyone know what the size wise this radio is?

    • +1

About the size of an iPad, but 10cm thick.

    • The Sangaen DPR45 is listed as
      Dimensions W x H x D (mm) 280 x 170 x 92
      Weight (g) 1620

This Dick Smith radio appears to be much the samae
      Quite heavy at 1.6 kg

      • +6

Back in the day of it wasn't heavy you wouldn't buy it

  • +1

Thanks. Going to give dab a go

  • +2

Grabbed one at the eBay price with cash rewards. Thanks.

  • Hrmm would this work well in the car as a DAB+ receiver hooked up via AUX in on my headunit? I presume not especially if it's tucked away in the glove box.

  • Cheers Op just bought one

  • The following info was posted by OzBargain member Seb when there was a deal regarding this product back at the end of 2014

Has good features but gets mixed review. CHOICE said:

    So here's the plan:
I plan to put tape over the Dick Smith logo, so I never have to be reminded of the unfortunate incidents I have had with Customer Non-Service back when Anchorage Capital owned them (and took them and their investors for a cleaning). This way, I'll also not be reminded of the unfortunate realities of rebranding electronics for local customers who feel 'safer' purchasing foreign electronics when the logos of their 'trusted' local crapstores are on them…which I have never really understood in my lifetime, ever. Any foreign company has got to be better seen on electronics than the store name, especially the manufacturer themselves…without the local store.

I plan to ignore my aversion to primitive, unattractive, segmented LED displays when showing text: that horrid, hard-to-read text. Apparently we cannot use a dot-matrix LCD here for some reason…which even cheap Chinese Walkie Talkies have these days. Those silly segmented 'letters' will be hard to ignore, becasue it will remind me of the numerous car stereos which have similar segmented letters (also for some unknown reason to me living in 2017).

I plan to ignore my aversion to Kogan & all the horror stories I've heard about USED stock being sent to customers and so forth.

    and finally…

I plan to at least try it once, possibly when painting the house.

    So yes, I bought one.
    Living on the edge.

I plan to put tape over the Dick Smith logo

Cotton bud dipped in Isopropyl Alcohol will remove the logo without damage to the plastic.

      • +2

        Excellent.

      • +2

This is exactly what I planned to do haha

      • +2

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the 411, mate.

  • +3

Thanks OP, bought one on ebay with cash back. No idea what I will do with it since I don't listen to the radio.

  • +1

    Thanks Op. bought one!

  • Forgive my ignorance, can someone please enlighten me if this is capable of catching International radio stations??

    Appreciate your help in advance.

    Thanks,
    Avnish

    • This can only receive domestic broadcasts - AM, FM or DAB+. There's no shortwave or internet radio options.

  • +2

Ordered one for the old man, thanks OP

    Hey,

Just a heads up that the Dick Smith ebay.com.au site is saying:

    544 sold
    100% sold
    @ 21:13 ACST.

  • As a doomsday prepper this it a great addition for my apocalypse cache together with the 400 cans of baked beans.

    • +1

That crystal clear digital radio sound will be a nice little luxury while hunkering in your bunker for two weeks after a nuclear holocaust.

      • +1

North Korean nukes ain't sh*t. Would probably take out Uluru or hopefully Darwin.

      • +1

I see a very dead deal. OzBargained indeed!

All nuclear-fallout (and cyclone) shelters should have a "Thankyou for Hunkering and not Bunkering" sign on the inside. If only as a replacement for "Home, Sweet Home".
Thankyou for knowing the 'H' as in 'unkering', word. Please become a journalist!

I only just got around to replacing (only took around 18 months) an old screen-dead/semi-lump radio with everything bar the kitchen sink Sangean streaming bluetooth bread loaf. Slightly irritated by only 10 presets for each band, but did discover the reason. Fixed (maximum) of ten, courtesy of the proprietary 'Silicon Frontier' chips that are used in all the Sangean streaming models. Complete 'access to the portal' arrangement by the look of things.

That's some info for you, should you ever post a similarly good deal, but on one of those. Somebody - understandably, will ask, "Why?". Especially given the fifteen per band on this model!

  • +1

thanks OP.. also purchased one (via ebay..)

  • +4

one for me and my brother in law
does he need one? do i ? who cares ! bargain is a bargain !

    • +2

I just bought a second one in case of emergency because this is such a good deal

      • +2

An emergency such as not being able to find the first one you bought?

  • What DC transformer do I need to run this ?

    • The AC-DC power supply is integrated into the unit with one of those figure 8 connectors, so you'll probably need to run 6 volts into the battery compartment somehow.

      • +1

thanks - Gee I may have just bought the last one.

  • +1

Bought it even though I only listen to one AM radio station lel.

  • The Ebay listing appears to be sold out.

    • You can still order through Dick's own site.

  • +2

    All gone!

    • Still available from the Dick Smith site directly.

      • +1

can no longer add to cart
