  • A few minutes too late - wife has been after a good cheap DAB radio for a long time..
saw it available, took a phone call, added to basket and sorry sold out! :(

  • +1

Been pondering these for a while at $49, for $30 these are a steal so got greedy and I bought a few, the old folks still use a philips AM plug-in transistor from the 60's. Sangean stuff is great IMO. Had 3 and all are excellent. The speaker on this is huge so should sound awesome.

  • +1

Great price, thanks for posting OP!

  • Bought! I have this one http://www.nnrm.net/Bilder/Foto%20samling/Tandberg%20SS8-32%… sitting at my parents house waiting for me to pick it up and restore it, but this sangean one will have to carry me over in the mean time.

  • Been wanting a Digital Radio for the drive in theatre (been having problems with analogues grabbing rogue signals).
    Thanks OP!

Aghhh bugger it all to hell

    I really wanted this …

Is anything really a bargain, grasshopper, no matter how much it is discounted, if you don't need it and won't use it? I got one. It will probably still be unopened in the box when they drag my body out from all the unopened boxes in the room.

    • You can use it as portable speaker though if tge speaker is good. Just buy additional aux cable

      • It's got a 3.5mm stereo headphone socket, not an AUX in.

  • +2

lol have a look at the ebay listing. Looks like a work in progress :P

I'm going to be trying out an idea I have.

Considering that Ni-Mh batteries are nominally 1.2V and this radio uses 4 D batteries, the radio should work with any 5V supply.

So if you've got a USB power bank and a spare (worthless) USB cable laying around, it might be worth chopping one end off the USB cable (not the type-A end) and tapping into the power wires with alligator clips or something, and hooking it up to the terminals in the battery compartment of the radio.

Remember that a typical D battery has around 12000-20000mAh capacity, and you can typically find a good 20000mAh power bank online for $50, so if you want a cheap solution with long battery life you might want to consider the idea…

    • Very 'ghetto' approach, but it will probably work. Then again you can always use AC if it's convenient. Or buy a bunch of eneloops and charger & spacers for $50 too. Even if it's not equivalent in terms of runtimes, there's probably a fair chance it will be plenty good.

    • +2

The stated capacity of powerbanks is the capacity of the internal 3.6V batteries, so that 20Ah is really ~14.4Ah @ 5V.

There's a lot of options with rechargeable 6V batteries.

  • I'm sensing there is going to be issues here: not enough stock or price error.

    This is Kogan after all

    • I got my shipping notification at 4:59pm today. I suspect they might not have enough to fulfil the demand (eBay was reporting 500 radios sold), but if you were early enough they should be shipping them out.

      • Yeah I spoke to soon, got mine about the same time

  • +1

    Got my shipping notification today.

    • I ordered before I posted the deal here and still haven't gotten anything :(

      • +1

update: got my shipping notification just now!

  • Has anyone that ordered through Ebay got shipping notification?

    • Me. I think they attempted delivery today whilst I was at work.

    • No shipping confirmation yet.

    • yes
ordered via ebay around 6.15pm on 24th
order dispatched email from dick smith 6.06pm on 26th
order sent email from ebay 6.10pm on 26th

      • I ordered around 9pm on ebay, haven't got notification yet, maybe they are doing in order. Fingers crossed..

        • 8:21pm on 24th ebay - no notifications yet

        • 8:32pm on eBay, no shipping notifcation yet.

  • Ordered from the Dick Smith website 24 April 2017 at 7:17pm, more than 2 hours after the original post by mubd1234 at 4.58pm.

Received my shipping confirmation at 3.09pm today

  • +2

I ordered on ebay and received my radio today! Faster than I expected and all working well.

    • I got express shipping and I still haven't gotten a tracking update other than "shipping information received by Australia Post" 😠

      • Mine's scheduled to arrive tomorrow, according to my Aussie Post tracking.

  • +3

My Dick Smith ebay feedback reads:
Hope you're enjoying your DICK SMITH purchase. Great eBayer! Thank you
Maybe it is a message from the future. So far I am enjoying waiting for it.

  • +1

    Got mine, came unwrapped wtf??

    • really? So..just in bubble wrap? Did all the instructions and accessories come too?
Perhaps it was a demo from an old DSE shop?

  • Ordered from dicksmith eBay on 24th. Haven't heard from them since.

  • +1

Mine arrived just now. It's in the original unsealed box with a Australia Post sticker on it. It peeled off OK. One very small dent in box otherwise good nick.

Inside looked original and unopened. Radio is perfect and undamaged. All I have done so far is check that it works and it does.

So I repacked it and put the box with all the other OzBargain purchases I do not need but could not resist buying.

    Just kidding.

    • No outer box? wow that is slack

      • +2

Yeah, no frills with Kogan. (Amazon is going to kill these guys).

I am pretty sure these radios were liquidation stock from the original Dick Smith not product commissioned by this rebranded Kogan company. They just wanted to get rid of them.

        • +1

Yes, most stuff I have had from Amazon (pretty much all US stores has been really well packed with plenty of bubble wrap.
Aussie Ebay and Kogan are going to get theirs bums wiped by Amazon. Cant wait. Would love to see eBay stumble and get desperate. They have been too arrogant for too long.

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:

I like eBay, it's the Wild West, you need to be careful. Most frequent traders go out of their way to make you happy though.

Kogan seems to be out to screw you, no emphasis on quality or customer service.

If Amazon here is anything like in the US with Prime it will be a game changer here.

    • +2

yes other than wine boxes, first order i've ever received with just a delivery label stuck on the original box and no extra packaging, making it less presentable as a gift - my box has a few worn creases, though is better than AussieDaddy's

unit itself has a couple of minor scratches but otherwise brand new - feels heavy/sturdy, sounds fine

now to decide if i need some battery adapters :)

    • Does yours come with a user manual? I couldn't find any user manual inside the box.

  • Ordered 5.54pm on 24th from Dick Smith website just got shipping notification now, thanks for posting OP.

    • I ordered over 2 hours later so I guess I'll be lucky to get mine sent out next week, at this rate.

      • +1

They have an odd way of processing their orders as sof mentioned he/she got shipping confirmation yesterday and ordered an hour after I did.

  • +2

"Due to an unexpected supply shortage, we are unable to supply your Dick Smith - DAB+/FM/AM Portable Receiver as originally expected."
    Bugger… ordered 24th.

    • +1

      Not sure I believe them.
This stock has been in the Dick Smith warehouses for absolutely years. It would have been through many stock counts.
Perhaps they read this thread and realised they are worth more.
"The DPR-44 is the same as the DPR-45 but Dick Smith branded. A pretty astounding discount, considering that the DPR-45 usually retails for around $175-200"

This knowledge would kill Ruslans mean scab heart

    • Yeah same

  • just received email, unable to fulfill order. offered refund. 👎

  • -2

They don't even have the courtesy to give you a voucher you can wipe your arse with >:(

    • My email said

Option 1. Receive an eVoucher to the value of your product plus a bonus $10 eVoucher as a goodwill gesture. You can use your eVouchers on our full range of products at www.dicksmith.com.au

Option 2. Receive a refund for this product, plus a $10 eVoucher as a goodwill gesture Please note: refunds can take up to 7 days to appear in your account after processing.

What do I do with a $10 evoucher?

  • +1

Same email, seems I have to reply with '2'in order to get a refund, since they seem to expect I will want to shop with them in the future.

  • Fkn drop kicks. Same message. :(
    Really wanted this radio too.

  • +1

If anyone wants to sell theirs, please let me know.

  • Still no bad news on my ebay order yet, pretty poor service, it was better before DSE went bust

  • Same message.

  • +1

SCAMMED. I too received the same email informing me that they had run out.. pfft!
Dick Smith / Kogan have computer based stock management systems, there is no way they would have ran out and still allowed purchases to continue..
Mr Kogan just woke up and realised the price was too cheap and pulled the plug. No doubt the same radios will appear again on the tricky dicky website with a much bigger price tag.

    • +1

I dunno, I reckon they might have been too incompetent to link their eBay store stock levels with their actual inventory on the Kogan site. A whole bunch of people got their radios shipped, so they clearly haven't just gone 'hey, thats too big a discount' and pulled the plug.

  • Sorry to hear about the guys who missed out, I ordered reasonable early on eBay, The Kogan web site was going crazy with "Someone purchased" one of these radios. Mine arrived today.

Ditto, "no stock" email. After sitting on my cash for 5 days too. BUYER BEWARE!

They should have processed an instant refund and said sorry, here's $10 and we hope you give us another try. No, they sent an email late on a Friday advising options to choose from and passing a sales pitch as the primary. They mentioned up to 7 days "after processing" which is ambiguous how long that part will take. I have requested a dispute from Paypal. If they sit on it too long, consider exercising your consumer rights. Do bear in mind that Paypal may take longer than a direct payment however once actually initiated by Kogan or PP.

Kogan also stuffed up my "7 pcs accessory set" Bonus in my case, I got 14 pcs!
Agreed that Amazon will absolutely murder this operation based on user experience alone.

  • +4

Got the refund email today, never shopping on Kogan/Dick again.

  • +1

Still no email messages here on my end. Absolute silence for 4 days (and counting). Will it go through? Will it not? I certainly don't know. Nothing in the spam either.

Well at least this is the same Dick Smith I knew under Anchorage Capital's ownership (ie. zero online communications), so some points need to be given for consistency. It's hard to get consistency like this in an ever-changing world.

  • +3

I ordered on ebay around the 50% sold mark, still have heard nothing.

When I was watching the item for after that, it said "item has been updated by user". Later after that it was interesting that the percentage sold dropped at least once around the 70% sold mark, so they must have been increasing the number for sale.

Appears they were watching it closely and updating so no excuse for no stock in my book.

  • +2

DSE's reputation precedes itself. Dodgy dick.

Surprise surprise Dick Smith and Kogan did it again - I just received an email to say it is out of stock and do I want a $10 coupon as a good will gesture?

If they are using "live" monitoring of stock levels then this shouldnt happen.

  • Kogan has since renigged on the supply of my order placed. Nice one Kogan. Others also had their order renigged as well?

  • +1

I placed my order on Ebay on 24th and money taken.
I have heard nothing since then, no posting details or no cancellation notice.
    Not good.
No more dealing with Kogan for me.

  • +2

Received OK, Saturday 29/4 via AusPost.

    • About the dimensions of a Netbook (only thicker and heavier).
    • Basic LCD screen.
    • Nice sound for the money.
    • Box wasn't wrapped or in Black Plastic like DealsDirect package,
so I would strongly recommend people use AusPost Tracking and try to
      be there when delivery occurs
  • +2

Ordered around 7pm on 24th via eBay.

No shipment or cancellation email yet.

I've already gone out and bought D batteries for it so I better get the bloody thing!!

    • I thought the whole deal was a plot to sell down the DSE battery stockpile.

  • +3

Conspiracy theory: (Dodgy) Dick has same total quantity on eBay and Dick (instead of say 50/50% split). If there's a spike in sales (as was the case here) and Dick sells out, then eBay orders fulfilled last since Dick orders makes more $$$. It's dodgy as you know what, but I'm seeing Dick orders received and eBay orders not. Thoughts?

    • +1

I think you're right about Dick having duplicate stock quantities on eBay and their own site (probably only manually updated once a day or something), but there are at least two comments here from eBay orderers who had their stuff shipped.

I had two orders - one really early in the piece, and one really late in the piece after eBay had sold out but before the Dick Smith site had gone out of stock.

Both orders were from Dick's site, but only the first one ended up shipping. So I think they may have shipped them out based on first come, first served.

      • +2

Yeah but not sure they're smart enough to be first come, first served from MULTIPLE sources. I still they think they processed Dick orders (FCFS) before even considering eBay. This really is just a continuation of how pathetic they were even before Kogan took over.

    • +5

But they are likely to get negg'ed more on ebay, I'm going to neg them for this debacle

  • +1

It's no coincidence that Kogan rhymes with Bogan.
    And a dick is…a dick.

    Monday's To-Do list
    * contact the (uncontacted) remaining customers about their 'in limbo' orders
    * refund customers promptly if you can't 'put out'
    * stop being a dick
    * stop being a bogan
    * pray that the CIA's favourite tax-dodging, customer-spying, gov-bribing retailer - headed by Jeff Bezos - doesn't eat you alive when they arrive
    * enjoy the negative feedback

  • +1

Brought on 24/04, delivered yesterday. Good job OP.

  • Great radio - nice to have some old school radio - albeit digital - back in the house by way of this solid unit. Thanks OP - arrived on Friday.

  • I think people being a little unfair. DS used to ship none of this sort of listing quite often but at least some people received this offer.

That is an improvement - so is this about kogan bashing or just limited stock?

    • I guess it's down to whether you feel waiting one week without notification of an 'in stock' product's status is fair. I think it's less about comparing it to the past, but rather comparing it to basic, sane service standards. If I were the business owner, and I was holding onto people's money for this amount of time, I'd never do it without some sort of notification of status. After all, your customers ordered an 'in stock' product.

Sure, some people got theirs. That's great. But some are also waiting on any update from an order made a week ago.

      • +1

Service standards in Australia are non existent.

this was a bargain. hundreds got it. if you didn't you didn't. I didn't.

        still a good post.

takes a parcel a week to cross the metro these days - takes 2 days to fly to Australia. service and Australia incompatible words.

Like a right honourable politician - another nonsense term.

  • +1

About 220 were sold on ebay when I ordered mine.
1 turned up Thursday and the other turned Saturday.

  • Why have some orders been cancelled and not others? is it just the DSE/Kogan that have been cancelled not Ebay?

Not heard anything back from my Ebay order yet - I'm not expecting any good news

    • It seems they just oversold between their ebay shop and main site.

I purchased when only around 50 or 60 had been sold via ebay, so had no issue with my order, but sales on ebay ended up over 500 units from memory. That would have been in addition to sales via the DSE site.

  • I have just received mine this morning just like this: http://imgur.com/a/AEZ9u

    • Yep - that's how they roll…

      • I see. I saw some folks saying that they weren't wrapped, so it looks like they couldn't be bothered since they sold them for cheap. haha

Hey, fookos, did you buy this radio? And if you did, what batteries are using? AA to D in adapters, or something else?

        • Hey AD,
Did you buy your via ebay? I did and I am still waiting. If you did, did they mark it "sent" or did it just show up?

        • +1

@King Tightarse: Yeah, I bought it through eBay, and yeah, I received the 'sent' message last week. I don't understand why some people who bought it early on have theirs cancelled, whereas folks who bought it later have theirs sent/delivered. Kinda weird!

        • @AussieDaddy:
Cheers, yeah I am in limbo, : neither marked sent, nor cancelled.
I really would like to receive it but I don't particularly expect to now

        • +1

@King Tightarse: Sucks if you don't receive it. Good luck, mate.

        • @AussieDaddy

I've got it plugged into the mains at the moment, but did order some of the AA to D adapters via ebay last week - one of the types listed with links elsewhere in this thread.

I went for the three-AA battery version, so there's option to put one, two or three batteries in each cell depending on the use required, and for how long. Mostly, I'll have it 'plugged in'. Nice unit, even if a little ugly - kind of grows on you.

        • @fookos: I saw that eBay link and I am thinking to go for the three-AA to D adapter too. Ta
